K Kavitha Arrives At ED Office For Questioning

K Kavitha Arrives At ED Office For Questioning

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha on Tuesday arrived at the Enforcement Drectorate’s office for questioning in the Delhi liquor policy case.

ED yesterday questioned her for over 10 hours regarding her alleged role in the Delhi liquor policy case.
On Monday, Kavitha appeared before ED after the federal agency on March 16, issued a fresh summon to the BRS leader to join its ongoing investigation in the case.

The federal agency issued the fresh summons as Kavitha refused to attend the ED interrogation on Thursday citing a pending petition in the Supreme Court.

Kavitha did not appear for questioning conveying to the probe agency that the matter is still pending before the apex court.

According to the sources, Kavitha has sent the necessary documents sought by the probe agency through her legal representative.

The ED had summoned her earlier this month to appear before it on Thursday in the Delhi excise scam, alleging that she was a key member of the south cartel.

The BRS leader had approached the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing claiming that as a woman, she cannot be summoned to the ED office, and the probe agency’s representatives must visit her instead.

On Wednesday the Supreme Court had agreed to hear her plea challenging the ED summons on March 24 but refused to grant her interim relief.

In its investigation, ED has come to know that Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandra Pillai is one of the key persons in the alleged scam involving payments of huge kickbacks and the formation of the biggest cartel of the South Group.

South Group comprises Telangana MLC Kavitha, Sarath Reddy (promoter of Aurobindo Group), Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (MP, Ongole), his son Raghav Magunta, and others. The South Group was being represented by Pillai, Abhishek Boinpalli and Butchi Babu, the federal agency investigation has revealed.

Pillai along with his associates was coordinating with various persons to execute the political understanding between the South Group and a leader of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Pillai has been an accomplice and was involved in the kickbacks from the South Group and the recoupment of the same from the businesses in Delhi, ED investigation revealed.

The ED had earlier said that the South Group gave kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to AAP leaders.

Pillai is learnt to be a partner of 32.5 per cent in Indo Spirits, which had got an L1 licence. Indo Spirits is a partnership firm of Arun (32.5 per cent), Prem Rahul (32.5 per cent) and Indospirit Distribution Limited (35 per cent), wherein Arun and Prem Rahul represented the benami investments of Kavitha and Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy and his son Raghava Magunta.

Pillai is a partner in Indo Spirits. In this partnership firm, Pillai represented the interests of Kavitha.

Kavitha, who is a member of the Telangana Legislative Council, was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the same case in December last year.

ED, last year filed its first chargesheet in the case. The agency said it has so far undertaken nearly 200 search operations in this case after filing FIR after taking cognisance of a CBI case which was registered on the recommendation of the Delhi lieutenant governor.

The CBI inquiry was recommended on the findings of the Delhi chief secretary’s report filed in July showing prima facie violations of the GNCTD Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR)-1993, Delhi Excise Act-2009, and Delhi Excise Rules-2010, officials had said.

In October, the ED had raided nearly three dozen locations in Delhi and Punjab following the arrest of Sameer Mahendru, Managing Director of Delhi’s Jor Bagh-based liquor distributor Indospirit Group, in the case and arrested him later. The CBI too filed its first charge sheet in the case early this week.

The ED and the CBI had alleged that irregularities were committed while modifying the Excise Policy, undue favours were extended to licence holders, the licence fee was waived or reduced and the L-1 licence was extended without the competent authority’s approval. The beneficiaries diverted “illegal” gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their books of account to evade detection.

As per the allegations, the Excise Department had decided to refund the Earnest Money Deposit of about Rs 30 crore to a successful tenderer against the set rules. Even though there was no enabling provision, a waiver on tendered licence fees was allowed from December 28, 2021, to January 27, 2022, due to COVID-19.

This allegedly caused a loss of Rs 144.36 crore to the exchequer, which has been instituted on a reference from the Union Home Ministry following a recommendation from Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. (ANI)

Interpol Takes Off Red Corner Notice Against Mehul Choksi

Interpol Takes Off Red Corner Notice Against Mehul Choksi

The decision of Interpol to take off the Red Corner Notice (RCN) issued against Mehul Choksi is a result of efforts of the legal team and the genuine claim of the “kidnapping” of my client Mehul Choksi, said his lawyer Vijay Aggarwal.

Ultimately, truth has prevailed, he said, adding, “as the kidnapping attempt of my client is not approved by the international community, RCN issued against my client by Interpol has been removed”.
It is pertinent to note that Red Corner Notices are issued against fugitives and is considered as a request to law enforcement agencies across the world to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

The 63-year-old fugitive is wanted in India in connection with a Rs 13,500-crore fraud in the Punjab National Bank (PNB).

Lawyer Raleigh claimed that Indian agencies had abducted him from Antigua and forcibly took him to Dominica in June 2021.

Last year, the fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi also got a huge relief from the Commonwealth of Dominica in which he was charged with illegal entry by the police. The prosecution of Dominica decided to withdraw/discontinue the legal proceedings going in the illegal entry case against him.

Director of Public Prosecutions (AG) in a reply filed on May 17, 2022, to the Magistrate Court informed that “‘Mehul Chinubhai Choksi’ was charged, for that he, on the 24th day of May 2021 at Toucarie Bay, Toucarie in the Parish of St. John, in the Commonwealth of Dominica, did enter Illegally into the Commonwealth of Dominica at a place to wit “Toucarie Bay, Toucarie” not approved as a point of entry”.

The reply of the Director of Prosecutions further states that “In accordance with the provisions of Section 72(2) (c) of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica, I do hereby discontinue the above-mentioned proceedings against the said, ‘Mehul Chinubhai Choksi'”.

After the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Choksi lawyer Advocate Vijay Aggarwal while talking to ANI said, “Truth always comes out in the end, no matter how hard anyone tries to stop it or hide it. Lies are just temporary delays to the inevitable. It was extremely insensitive for some people to call injuries on my client Mr Mehul Choksi to be fake because of some legal strategy.”

Earlier, when Dominica High Court granted interim bail to Choksi on medical grounds, Vijay Aggarwal had said that all pending proceedings related to illegal entry against Mehul Choksi will be kept in abeyance till he gets medically fit to come back to Dominica.

“But according to us that was not an illegal entry matter, it was a forceful entry case,” he added.

Fugitive Businessman Mehul Choksi had gone missing from Antigua on May 23, 2021, and was soon caught in Dominica. He was charged with illegal entry by the police in Dominica. (ANI)

BJP Is World's Most Important Party: Wall Street Journal

BJP Is World’s Most Important Party: Wall Street Journal

The BJP is the world’s most important foreign political party and it may also be the least understood according to an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal authored by Walter Russell Mead.

“India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is, from the standpoint of American national interests, the most important foreign political party in the world.

It may also be the least understood,” the WSJ piece read.
BJP, after successive victories in 2014, and 2019 is also headed for a repeat victory in 2024, the publication stated, adding that, India is emerging both as a leading economic power and, along with Japan, as the linchpin of American strategy in the Indo-Pacific.

“For the foreseeable future the BJP will be calling the shots in a country without whose help American efforts to balance rising Chinese power are likely to fall short,” it added.

The author Mead believes that BJP is poorly understood because it grows out of a political and cultural history unfamiliar to most non-Indians.

The BJP’s electoral dominance reflects the success of a once obscure and marginal social movement of national renewal based on efforts by generations of social thinkers and activists to chart a distinctively ‘Hindu path’ to modernization, the Wall Street Journal piece stated.

“Like the Muslim Brotherhood, the BJP rejects many ideas and priorities of Western liberalism even as it embraces key features of modernity. Like the Chinese Communist Party, the BJP hopes to lead a nation with more than a billion people to become a global superpower. Like the Likud Party in Israel, the BJP combines a basically pro-market economic stance with populist rhetoric and traditionalist values, even as it channels the anger of those who’ve felt excluded and despised by a cosmopolitan, Western-focused cultural and political elite,” it added.

American analysts, particularly those of a left-liberal persuasion, often look at Narendra Modi’s India and ask why it isn’t more like Denmark. Their concerns aren’t wholly misplaced. Journalists who are critical of the ruling coalition can face harassment and worse.

Religious minorities who fall afoul of the resurgent Hindu pride that marks BJP India speak of mob violence and point to hostile official measures like broadly drafted anti-conversion laws as well as occasional outbursts of mob violence. Many fear the power of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS, a nationwide Hindu nationalist organization with close ties to BJP leadership, it added.

However, Mead believes that India is a complicated place, and there are other stories as well.

Some of the BJP’s most striking recent political successes have come in predominantly Christian states in India’s northeast. The BJP government of Uttar Pradesh, a state with a population of about 200 million, enjoys strong support from Shia Muslims. RSS activists have played a significant role in efforts to fight caste discrimination, the opinion piece said.

“After an intensive series of meetings with senior BJP and RSS leaders, as well as some of their critics, I am convinced that Americans and Westerners generally need to engage much more deeply with a complex and powerful movement,” Mead wrote.

From a fringe of mostly marginalized intellectuals and religious enthusiasts, the RSS has become perhaps the “most powerful civil-society organization in the world”. Its rural and urban development programs, religious education and revival efforts and civic activism, staffed by thousands of volunteers from all walks of life, have succeeded in forming the political consciousness and focusing the energies of hundreds of millions of people, the Wall Street Journal piece added.

Recalling his meeting with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Mead writes, “The movement seems to have reached a crossroads.

When I met with Yogi Adityanath, a Hindu monk serving as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, considered one of the most radical voices in the movement–and sometimes spoken of as a successor to 72-year-old Prime Minister Modi–the conversation was about bringing investment and development to his state.

Similarly, Mohan Bhagwat, the spiritual leader of the RSS, spoke to me about the need to accelerate India’s economic growth, and disavowed the idea that religious minorities should suffer discrimination or loss of civil rights”.

How these statements by top leaders to a foreign journalist will percolate down to the grassroots is impossible to predict. But I did get the impression that the leadership of a once-marginalized movement wants to position itself as the natural establishment of a rising power and is looking to engage deeply and fruitfully with the outside world without losing touch with its social and political base, he writes.

The invitation to engage with the BJP and RSS is one that Americans can’t afford to reject. As tensions with China rise, the US needs India as both an economic and political partner.

Understanding the ideology and the trajectory of the Hindu nationalist movement is as important for business leaders and investors seeking to engage economically with India as it is for diplomats and policymakers wanting to put the strategic relationship on a stable footing, the Wall Street Journal stated. Mann To Take Action Against Ex-DGP Over PM’s Security Breach

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against several police officers including the state’s top cop over a security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Punjab in January 2022.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings for the major penalty against Sidharth Chattopadhyay, the then DGP Punjab, Inderbir Singh, the then DIG, Ferozepur Range and Harmandeep Singh Hans, the then SSP Ferozepur over the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach in Punjab in January 2022, said an official letter by the Government of Punjab.
On March 14, Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua said that the state government will soon submit the “interim” report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, related to the security breach issue of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit in January 2022.

This came after the Central government sought a detailed action-taken report from the Punjab government over PM Modi’s security breach. Sources had said that a letter was sent through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the Punjab government asking for a detailed action taken report against the erring officers.

The Chief Secretary had said that the state government has received the report of the inquiry conducted by the Supreme Court-constituted panel into the incident and it is under consideration.

A report of the Supreme Court-appointed inquiry committee looking into the breach in security during PM Modi’s Punjab visit on January 5, 2022, which was submitted six months ago, indicated then-state Chief Secretary Anirudh Tewari, Police Chief S Chattopadhyaya, and other top officers for lapses.

Soon after the security breach, the MHA constituted a three-member committee that summoned the Director General of Punjab Police, Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, Punjab ADGP, Patiala IGP, and Ferozpur DIG along with over a dozen top Punjab Police officers. They were responsible for the Prime Minister’s security during his visit to Punjab’s Ferozpur on January 5.

The MHA then constituted a three-member committee led by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security), Cabinet Secretariat; Balbir Singh, Joint Director (IB); and S Suresh, IG, Special Protection Group.

The Centre was considering action under the Special Protection Group (SPG) Act against Punjab Police officers following the breach in the security of Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Punjab on January 5.

Section 14 of the SPG Act makes the state government responsible for providing all assistance to the SPG during the PM’s movement.

The MHA’s three-member team started its probe from its visit to the flyover where Prime Minister’s convoy was stuck for over 15-20 minutes due to a road blockade by protesters during his visit.

The MHA had constituted the three-member committee to enquire into the serious lapses in the security arrangements during the PM’s visit to Punjab’s Ferozepur, which led to the exposure of the VVIP to grave security risk.

The MHA had then also asked the Punjab government to “fix responsibility for this lapse and take strict action”.

The action was taken after the Prime Minister’s convoy during its visit to National Martyrs Memorial in Punjab via road reached a flyover where the road was blocked by some protestors.

The Prime Minister was stuck on the flyover for 15-20 minutes. This was a major lapse in the security of the Prime Minister.

The Punjab government had also constituted a high-level committee to probe the incident.

Prime Minister Modi landed at Bathinda on January 5 morning from where he was to go to the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala by helicopter.

Due to rain and poor visibility, the Prime Minister waited for about 20 minutes for the weather to clear out. When the weather did not improve, it was decided that he would visit the National Martyrs Memorial via road, which would take more than two hours.

Prime Minister Modi then proceeded to travel by road after necessary confirmation of necessary security arrangements by the DGP Punjab Police, mentions the statement. Around 30 km away from the National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when his convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protestors.

Prime Minister Modi was stuck on a flyover for 15-20 minutes. It was flagged as a major lapse in his security.

The Home Ministry had then said PM Modi’s schedule and travel plan were communicated well in advance to the Punjab government.

Following procedure, the Home Ministry said they had to make necessary arrangements for logistics, and security as well as keep a contingency plan ready.

Also in view of the contingency plan the Punjab government had to deploy additional security to secure any movement by road, which was clearly not deployed, the MHA had said then, adding “after this security lapse, it was decided to head back to Bathinda Airport.” (ANI)

Sikhs Protest Against Vandalism By Khalistan Supporters In London

Sikhs Protest Against Vandalism By Khalistan Supporters In London

A gathering of Sikh people on Monday staged a protest against the disrespectful act of Khalistan supporters towards the Indian flag at the High Commission of India in London.

They demanded the authorities concerned take action against the accused and ensure the proper safety of the Indian embassy in the United Kingdom.
Hundreds of people from the Sikh community gathered outside the British High Commission in New Delhi to register their resentment against the pro-Khalistan protest that took place in London a day ago.

At the protest, they were raising slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and of “Vande Mataram.”

A man who was actively taking part in the protest said that whatever happened in British happened was wrong. “The Khalistani flag was raised instead of India’s flag, which is wrong as we are Sikhs of India, and we love India,” he added.

Another protestor said, “We are against Khalistan. I want to appeal to all the members of the Sikh community that before replacing the Indian tricolour with the Khalistani flag, think once about how you are an Indian.”

BJP leader Majinder Singh Sirsa also released a video of himself addressing the attempt to pull down the Indian flag.

He said, “We condemn the attempt to bring down the Indian flag at the embassy in the United Kingdom. The people involved in such incidents do not represent Sikh feelings at all.”

“This is the same flag, when the Sikhs of Afghanistan and pleaded for help across the world but no one stepped forward, at that time PM of India sent a special ship to evacuate the Indians from there. This is the same tricolour for the safety of which, the Army jawans, deployed at the border are willing to give up their lives,” he added.

Sirsa also appealed to people of the Sikh community to love the tricolour as much as they do love their religion.

Notably, a pro-Khalistan protestor in London climbed the High Commission of India’s balcony and pulled down the Indian flag, a day before on Sunday.

A video of the same incident had gone viral on social video. In the now-viral video, the Khalistani protestor can be seen on the balcony attempting to bring down the Indian flag. At the end of the video, another man reaches the balcony from inside to avert any more harm to the flag.

The senior-most UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned on Sunday night after the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom was vandalised. The senior-most UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned late evening today to convey India’s strong protest at the actions taken by separatist and extremist elements against the Indian High Commission in London earlier in the day, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release on Sunday.

An explanation was demanded for the complete absence of British security that allowed these elements to enter the High Commission premises. She was reminded in this regard of the basic obligations of the UK Government under the Vienna Convention.

“India finds unacceptable the indifference of the UK Government to the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK,” the MEA press release said. Demanding “immediate steps” from the UK Government, the official press release from the MEA said, “It is expected that the UK Government would take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each one of those involved in today’s incident, and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.”

The British High Commissioner Alex Ellis condemned the attack on the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom today. He condemned the “disgraceful acts” and called them totally unacceptable.

“I condemn the disgraceful acts today against the people and premises of the High Commission of India – totally unacceptable,” British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis tweeted. (ANI)

Amazon To Lay Off 9,000 More Employees: CEO

Amazon To Lay Off 9,000 More Employees: CEO

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said Monday he was cutting 9,000 more jobs from the online retail giant’s workforce, following the 18,000 that were axed in January.

The latest cuts come after the company announced earlier this year that it was eliminating some 18,000 positions as part of a major cost-cutting bid at the e-commerce giant.
“Given the uncertain economy… and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount,” Jassy said in a memo to staff.

Jassy said the fresh round of job cuts will take place in the coming weeks, and will mostly impact people working in the following divisions: Amazon Web Services, People Experience and Technology Solutions (PXT), advertising and Twitch.

“This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term,” Jassy wrote in the memo.

“Some may ask why we didn’t announce these role reductions with the ones we announced a couple months ago,” Jassy added. “The short answer is that not all of the teams were done with their analyses in the late fall; and rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible.”

The latest layoffs at Amazon come amid a spate of job cuts in the technology industry in recent months, as the sector confronts a whiplash in pandemic-induced demand for digital goods and services and broader macroeconomic uncertainty.

Amazon, like a number of other Big Tech companies, also rapidly grew its headcount during the early days of the pandemic. Jassy wrote on Monday that the hiring “made sense given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole.” “However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount,” he added.

Just last week, Facebook-parent Meta said it was laying off an additional 10,000 workers, on top of the 11,000 job cuts announced late last year. (ANI)

FCRA Violations: MHA Favours CBI Inquiry Against Aman Biradari NGO

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has recommended a CBI inquiry against IAS-turned-social activist Harsh Mander’s Aman Biradari NGO for alleged Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) violations, government sources said on Monday.

Mander was among the most ubiquitous faces in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Delhi.
He has also been called a Congress sympathizer, for having worked closely with Sonia Gandhi from 2010 to 2012 in the National Advisory Committee, considered “the most powerful club in the Manmohan Singh government”.

The MHA’s recommendations were sent to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct an inquiry against Mander’s NGO Aman Biradari as it finds violations of the FCRA, said a government source, requesting anonymity.

Aman Biradari, on its website, has mentioned that it is a people’s campaign for a secular, peaceful, just and humane world. It aims to attain the same through the building of local level institutions at village and district levels, comprising mainly the youth and women, from diverse backgrounds and faiths in order to strengthen mutual bonds of tolerance, fraternity, respect and peace between people of different religions, caste and language groups.

Attune to the true spirit of our nation, the website reads, Aman Biradari through its activities aims to inculcate and promote equal citizenship, justice, communal harmony, peace, and the celebration of our social and cultural diversity within the very grassroots of our society.

The MHA’s move came almost two years after the Economic Offence Wing of Delhi Police in 2021 had also registered a case under sections 406,409,420,120B of the Indian Penal Code against Mander’s other NGO Centre for Equity Studies (CES) and its officials where Mander is the director. The FIR was filed for criminal breach of trust.

The Delhi Police FIR was based on an inspection report of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), which had revealed financial irregularities in shelter homes established by the NGO. A case of child sexual abuse was also alleged in one of the shelter homes.

The Center for Equity Studies was funding the shelter homes in question, the Rainbow Foundation of India (RFI), the Association for Rural and Urban Needy (ARUN-India), the ‘Dil Se Campaign’ of Can Assist Society and Aman Biradari.

Mander has been actively involved in anti-CAA protests in Delhi and had quit as an IAS officer after the 2002 Gujarat riots.

For 17 years since Mander resigned from the Indian Administrative Service, he has made it his mission to fight for issues like the dignity of persons with disabilities, the right to food, the protection of Adivasi and Dalit women, and justice for victims of lynching. (ANI)
