Anjali case

Nidhi’s ‘Drunk’ Theory A ‘Conspiracy’: Anjali’s Uncle

The maternal uncle of Delhi girl Anjali, who died in the horrific hit-and-drag incident at Khanjawala on New Year’s night, on Wednesday said the deceased’s friend Nidhi is hatching conspiracy by claiming the victim was drunk on the day of the incident.

His response came against the backdrop of claims by Nidhi to the media on Tuesday that Anjali was drunk on the day of the incident.
“Nidhi was hidden previously. Now she has come out after Anjali’s last rites. When the incident happened, did not she have the humanity to report it to the police or family? She was scared then. Is not she scared now? This was Nidhi’s conspiracy,” Anjali’s maternal uncle told ANI.

He said Anjali did not have a drinking habit and her friend is lying over the matter.

“My niece did not have a drinking habit. If she was drunk that night (when the incident happened) as per Nidhi’s claim then the postmortem report would have mentioned that. It means Nidhi is lying,” he said.

He demanded the death penalty for the five accused who were in the vehicle that hit and dragged Anjali.

“Section 302 IPC should be registered against five accused and they should be given the death penalty. Section 304 IPC should be registered against Nidhi. We will appeal this to the government,” Anjali’s maternal uncle said after meeting Sultanpuri Station House Officer (SHO).

Speaking to media persons, Nidhi on Tuesday said, “She was in a drunken state but insisted on driving the two-wheeler. After being hit by the car, she came under the car and got dragged with it. I was scared and ran away and returned home, did not tell anything to anyone. It is the fault of the girl who was driving in an inebriated state. I insisted to her so much that do not drive, I am conscious, let me drive. She did not believe me and believed herself.”

Refuting the claim, Anjali’s mother said, “I don’t know Nidhi. I have never seen her. Anjali never used to drink. She never came home in an inebriated state. We don’t buy what is Nidhi claiming.”

She also questioned how Nidhi left the incident spot if she was, indeed, Anjali’s friend. She termed the incident a “well-thought-out conspiracy”.

“Nidhi is saying all the wrong things. If Nidhi was my daughter’s friend as she claims, why did she leave her alone? This is a well-thought-out conspiracy. Nidhi might be involved in it. There should be a proper investigation into her claims,” she said.

Anjali’s autopsy report said there was “semi-digested food material” present in her abdomen at the time of her death.

However, to ascertain if she was in a drunken state at the time of the incident, her viscera has been preserved for chemical analysis.

The autopsy report further said that Anjali’s back scraped off so badly as she held on the car’s axle and was dragged along that her ribs showed.

The 20-year-old was killed in the early hours of the New Year after her scooter was hit by a car driven by five men and she was reportedly dragged for 13 kilometres under the vehicle in outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri. (ANI)

Amazon To Lay Off 9,000 More Employees: CEO

Amazon To Layoff 18,000 Employees

Amazon on Thursday said it will lay off over 18,000 employees from its workforce citing economic uncertainty.

“Between the reductions, we made in November and the ones we’re sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles. Several teams are impacted; however, the majority of role eliminations are in our Amazon Stores and PXT organizations,” CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement.
“S-team and I are deeply aware that these role eliminations are difficult for people, and we don’t take these decisions lightly or underestimate how much they might affect the lives of those who are impacted.”

Jassy added Amazon is working to support those who are affected by providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.

In November 2022 too, Amazon reduced staff size by approximately 10,000, especially in the Devices and Books businesses, and also announced a voluntary reduction offer for some employees in its People, Experience, and Technology (PXT) roles.

During the November layoff, the company indicated that there would be more role reductions in early 2023.

“This year’s review has been more difficult given the uncertain economy and that we’ve hired rapidly over the last several years,” the statement by CEO added, explaining the rationale for the downsizing of the human resources.

The company will communicate with impacted employees or (representative bodies for Europe) starting January 18.

“Amazon has weathered uncertain and difficult economies in the past, and we will continue to do so. These changes will help us pursue our long-term opportunities with a stronger cost structure; however, I’m also optimistic that we’ll be inventive, resourceful, and scrappy in this time when we’re not hiring expansively and eliminating some roles,” Jassy further said in the statement. Land Subsidence Continues In Joshimath

Land Subsidence Continues In Joshimath, Cracks In Over 500 Houses

Cracks have reportedly developed in as many as 561 houses in Joshimath as a result of continued land subsidence in the town, stated the District Disaster Management Department.

Following the appearance of cracks in the houses, a total of 66 families are reported to have migrated from Joshimath as of now.
“Now the process of increasing cracks in Singhdhar and Marwadi has started. Badrinath NH near Singhdhar Jain locality and JP Company Gate in Marwadi, near the forest department check post, is continuously cracking. This crack is increasing every hour which is worrying,” said Joshimath Municipal Chairman Shailendra Pawar

As many as nine houses in Marwadi have reported cracks and at the same time cracks have started appearing in most public roads of the ward, stated the City Board Chairman, Joshimath. District Disaster Management Department has also reported cases of water seepage from underground in JP Colony, Marwadi ward of Joshimath.

“Cracks are also increasing on all the main roads of Sunil Ward due to which people are facing a lot of difficulty in walking,” said Shalendar Panwar.

After continued land sinking in Joshimath, District Magistrate Chamoli has posted Joint Magistrate Deepak Saini in Joshimath.

Earlier in the day, in the wake of the news of land subsidence in Joshimath and cracks developing in many houses in the town, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that necessary actions would be taken to save the people of the district.

CM Dhami would be visiting Joshimath soon to take stock of the situation and initiate necessary actions. The statement comes in the backdrop of reports of huge cracks that have appeared in the houses of the area due to land subsidence which is known as the vertical sinking of land in an area.

“I will be visiting Joshimath in the coming days and initiate steps to handle the situation. All the reports will be monitored and all the required steps will be taken. I have had a word with the Municipal Corporation chairman Shailendra Pawar to monitor the condition in the district,” said CM Pushkar Singh Dhami while talking to ANI.

Joshimath Municipal Chairman Shailendra Pawar said that huge cracks have appeared in the houses due to leakage of water from inside the ground in the Marwadi ward.

“I went to Dehradun to meet CM Dhami to discuss the entire situation. There have been reports that cracks have appeared in the houses due to leakage of water from inside the ground in the Marwadi ward,” said Shailendra Pawar.

Meanwhile, people in the Joshimath Town of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand have been fleeing from their houses to safer places following incidents of land subsidence in the area.

The winter season and the danger of house collapse due to landslides have now become a major issue in Joshimath Town. Nine wards of Joshimath town have been massively affected by landslides. The cracks in the walls and floors of the houses in the city area are getting deeper with each passing day, sounding an alarm for people.

Shailendra Pawar said that more than 3000 people from 576 houses in the city area have been affected due to this subsidence. “All the houses are being surveyed by the municipality. Many people have also left their homes,” he said.

Land subsidence has completely taken under its grasp the house of Madhavi Sati, the ex-Municipal President of Joshimath town area just like the other 574 houses in the town area, which have also developed huge cracks.

“I have no other option but to live in a ruined house,” she said. She said that the DM of Chamoli also visited the area but no conclusion has been reached so far.

“The people of Joshimath are worried about the future of the city,” she added.

Soon a delegation from Joshimath will be travelling to Dehradun to meet Uttarakhand Chief

Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami with the demand for rehabilitation for the people affected by the subsidence. (ANI)

Air India Flight incident

FIR Registered Against Man Who Urinated On Woman In Flight

Air India on Wednesday said it has imposed a 30-day flying ban on a passenger who had allegedly urinated on an elderly co-passenger during a New York-Delhi flight in November last year and Delhi Police has registered an FIR over the shocking incident.

While the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also launched an investigation, Air India has set up an internal panel to probe whether there were lapses on part of the crew in addressing the situation that caused distress to the woman.

The National Commission for Women has taken cognisance of the incident onboard the Air India flight in which the inebriated male passenger also flashed his private parts at the elderly woman.

The Commission has sought a detailed action taken report within seven days from the Delhi Police Commissioner over the incident.

Air India said as a first part, it has banned the passenger for 30 days, the maximum it is permitted to unilaterally do so.

The airline said it has taken very serious note of the incident that caused extreme distress to a passenger.

“Air India has taken a very serious note of the incident, where a passenger behaved in an unacceptable and undignified manner on the New York-Delhi flight that caused extreme distress to a fellow passenger. A police complaint has already been lodged in this case and Air India is committed to assisting the law enforcement agencies as well as regulatory authorities to ensure that justice is delivered to the aggrieved passenger,” an Air India spokesperson said, adding that they have reported the matter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for further action.

“We have also constituted an internal committee to probe lapses on the part of Air India’s crew and address the deficiencies that delayed quick redressal of the situation. We are also in regular contact with the aggrieved passenger and her family during the investigation and reporting process,” the spokesperson added.

The Delhi Police has registered the FIR under sections 354, 509, 510 of the Indian Penal Code and 23 of the Indian Aircraft Act against the man.

The police said the incident occurred on November 26 and the airline concerned (Air India) approached the police after a month and two days, i.e., on December 28.

In her letter to the chairman of the Board of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, the woman passenger, who is in her seventies, called the flight experience extremely traumatic and expressed deep disappointment over the incident in the business class section of the flight.

In her letter, the woman said the ‘appalling incident’ occurred shortly after the lunch was served and the lights were switched off, as she was getting ready to sleep. The flight had taken off from John F Kennedy international airport in New York.

She said that within minutes, an inebriated male walked to her seat and unzipped his pants, relieving himself and continued to expose his private parts until another passenger asked him to return to his seat.

“During the course of the flight, shortly after lunch was served and the lights were switched off, I was getting ready to sleep, and another passenger walked to my seat completely inebriated. He unzipped his pants, relieved himself, and continued to expose me to his private parts. The passenger sitting next to me asked him to return to his seat. He did not respond immediately, but after a few moments left the area,” her letter said.

The country’s aviation regulator the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that it has sought a report of the incident from the airline and said “action will be taken against those negligent.”

NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote Delhi Comissioner of Police Sanjay Arora that strict action should be taken against the culprit for “causing mental trauma to an elderly woman”.

“NCW has come across several media reports wherein it has been alleged that a drunken man urinated on a woman co-passenger in an Air India flight in November and left without facing any action. It has also been reported that after urinating, the man allegedly didn’t move until another passenger asked him to leave. The woman had complained to the crew, however, the crew allegedly gave her a set of pyjamas and slippers and told her to return to her seat, claiming no other seat was available,” the NCW statement said.

The Commission said it has also written to the Air India Chairman to take appropriate action against the culprit.

“The Commission has taken cognizance of the matter. Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to immediately register FIR in the matter under relevant provisions of law and to take strict action against the culprit for causing mental trauma to an elderly woman. The Commission has also written to the Chairman, Air India Limited to intervene in the matter and to take appropriate action against the culprit for the horrendous behaviour of an elderly woman on a flight and violating her right to live a life of dignity and safety,” the national women’s panel said.

“A detailed action taken in the matter must be communicated to the Commission within seven days,” the NCW added. (ANI)

Divorced Muslim Woman Alimony

Divorced Muslim Woman Entitled To Alimony For Life: HC

In a landmark ruling, the Allahabad High Court on Wednesday said a Muslim woman has the right to receive maintenance from her divorced husband not just till the completion of the ‘Iddat’ period, but for the rest of her life.

The alimony should be such that she can live the same life as she had been living before the divorce, the court ruled.

‘Iddat’ is a custom that bars Muslim women from stepping out and meeting relatives for four months following the death of their husbands.

The court set aside the order of the Principal Judge Family Court, Ghazipur, granting alimony only till the ‘Iddat’ period, terming it illegal. It said the Ghazipur court had given the order without properly perusing the statutory provisions and evidence.

“Under Section 3(3) of the Muslim Act, 1986, an order can be passed directing the former husband of the divorcee to pay to her such reasonable and fair provision and maintenance as deemed fit and proper having regard to needs of the divorced woman, her standard of life enjoyed by her during her marriage and means of her former husband,” the court observed.

“The word “provision” used in Section 3 of the Muslim Act, 1986 indicates that something is provided in advance for meeting some needs,” the court said.

“In other words, at the time of divorce the Muslim husband is required to contemplate the future needs and make preparatory arrangements in advance for meeting those needs,” the court said.

“Reasonable and fair provision” may include provision for her residence, her food, her cloths, and other articles,” the court said.

“In the case of Danial Latifi and another (supra), in Para-28, Hon’ble Supreme Court has fairly interpreted the provisions of Section 3 with regard to fair provision and maintenance and held that “it would extend to the whole life of the divorced wife unless she gets married for a second time,” the court observed.

The court observed that Section 4 deals with the Order for payment of maintenance, — Notwithstanding anything contained in the foregoing provisions of this Act or in any other law for the time being in force, where a Magistrate is satisfied that a divorced woman has not re-married and is not able to maintain herself after the iddat period, he may make an order directing such of her relatives as would be entitled to inherit her property on her death according to Muslim law to pay such reasonable and fair maintenance to her as he may determine fit and proper, having regard to the needs of the divorced woman, the standard of life enjoyed by her during her marriage and the means of such relatives and such maintenance shall be payable by such relatives in the proportions in which they would inherit the property and at such periods.”

The HC said under Section 3(2) of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, a divorced woman can file an application for maintenance from her ex-husband before a magistrate.

The court ordered the magistrate concerned to pass an order in three months on alimony, and it then, it ruled that the ex-husband will pay an interim alimony of Rs 5,000 per month to his divorced wife.

The judgment, in favour of the plea by Zahid Khatoon, was delivered by a division bench of Justice SP Kesarwani and Justice MAH Idrisi.

The HC made it clear that a Muslim woman was entitled to maintenance from her ex-husband even after the customary ‘Iddat’ period.

If she is not being given maintenance, she has the right to approach the magistrate, the court said in its judgment.

Zahid Khatoon wed Noorul Haq Khan on May 21, 1989. After their nikah (marriage), the husband got a job in a post office.

However, he divorced his wife on June 28, 2000, and got married a second time two years later.

His ex-wife filed an application under Section 3 of the Muslim Women Protection Act before the Judicial Magistrate, Junior Division, Ghazipur. The case was transferred by the district judge to the Family Court.

She also filed an application under Section 125 of CrPC. During the hearing for the same, the magistrate ordered the ex-husband to pay her Rs 1,500 per month till the period before the divorce.

The revision petition filed, challenging the order, was dismissed and there was no petition filed against the same.

The family court, after examining the evidence and testimony, ordered the ex-husband to pay Rs 1,500 monthly for a period of three months and 13 days. (ANI)

Clash Between Bairi Naresh's Supporter

Situation Tense After Clash Between Bairi Naresh’s Supporter, Ayyappa Devotees

Bairi Naresh’s remarks over Lord Ayyappa and other Hindu Gods including Lord Shiva and Vishnu have sparked an ideological battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its affiliated organizations, and the supporters of the Atheist Association chief.

The situation in Mahabubabad became tense after a student leader namely Suryaprakash came in the support of Bairi Naresh on social media.
Following this, a few Ayyappa devotees try to attack Suryaprakash. The police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Mahabubabad DSP Saddaiah said, “We have registered a case on a person named Suryaprakash for his comments on social media. There was also a clash between a few people and Suryaprakash. A case has also been registered against a person Sai for this clash. No one has been arrested.”

Bairi Naresh was arrested in Warangal on Saturday as he was booked under Sections 153(A), 205, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code.

Bairi Naresh allegedly made an insulting remark against Lord Ayyappa at a public meeting in Kondagal. A video of the same went viral, sparking outrage on social media platforms.

In the video, he can be seen mocking Lord Ayyappa’s birth.

Devotees had lodged complaints against Bairi Naresh at different police stations in Hyderabad with demands for his immediate arrest.

BJP state president Bandi Sanjay earlier on Saturday slammed the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS, formerly known as TRS) government, accusing Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao of allegedly “encouraging blasphemy” without taking any action.

In a series of tweets against Atheist Association President, Bairi Naresh who courted controversy by making “insulting” remarks about Lord Ayyappa Swamy, Bandi Sanjay took to Twitter and said, “Anybody can abuse Hindu Gods in #Telangana & get exonerated bcos @TelanganaCMO encourages blasphemy without taking any action! KCR claims to be “True Hindu” & his “Hinduvta is real” BUT so far what action is taken on insults against Gods Vishnu, Shiva & Ayyappa done in Kodangal ?” (ANI)
