Even before the last vote has been cast during the ongoing polling process in five states, political activities have started building up in Gujarat, the home state of prime minister Narendra Modi, and Himachal Pradesh where elections are due later this year. Elections is Gujarat are already being billed as the semi final before the 2019 general elections. In that sense the UP elections should be considered as quarter finals.
Gujarat Patel leader Hardik Patel, who had created a storm in the state after he organised protests over reservations a year and a half ago, addressed his first rally in the state last week. He was banished by the courts from entering the state as his presence was perceived as a threat to law and order. The cooling off period is now over and he is now busy in marshalling his support among the Patels who constitute a substantial section of voters in Gujarat. Both the Congress as well as the Aam Aadmi Party are out to woo him. He could give a tough time to the BJP in the state.
