Assembly Polls 2023: Cong Sinks, BJP Crosses Halfway Mark In C’garh

The allegations against chief minister Bhupesh Baghel over Mahadev betting app has led to the defeat of Congress in Chhattisgarh Assembly polls.

The BJP has crossed halfway mark of 46 in 90-member assembly of Chhattisgarh as star campaigner PM Modi targeted Baghel over corruption, job scam.

As per EC latest trends, BJP is leading in 54 seats and Congress in 35 seats. The halfway mark for the 90-member assembly of Chhattisgarh is 46.

The BJP, all through its high-voltage campaign in the state targeted the Congress government led by CM Baghel on alleged scams, corruption and the ‘hawala money funding’ related to the Mahadev app.

The Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) and Communist Party of India, each leading on one seat, namely Pali-Tanakhar and Konta respectively, according to the ECI data.

A total of 1,181 candidates contested seeking a mandate to the 90-member assembly.

During aggressive campaigning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raked up the issue of the Mahadev app ‘scam’ and asked the Congress to reveal how much money the Chief Minister got and how much of it was transferred to the party’s high command.

“I have some questions for the Congress leaders who are fond of teaching mathematics…I want to ask some questions about the party. The ‘Mahadev betting app scam’ is worth Rs 508 crore and the investigating agencies have recovered loads of cash in this case. A close aide of the Chhattisgarh CM is also in jail,” PM Modi had said during the election rally in Chhattisgarh’s Mungeli.

“Congress should reveal how much money the CM received in this. How much money have the other leaders of the party received and how much money has reached Delhi?” he added.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED), which is investigating the Mahadev Book Online Betting APP syndicate, claimed earlier that by questioning Asim Das, an arrested cash courier from the UAE, and the forensic examination of the phone recovered from him, and examination of an email sent by one of the high-ranking accused of Mahadev network, many startling facts came to light.

The agency claimed that regular payments were made in the past and, so far, about Rs 508 crore has been paid by the promoters of the Mahadev betting app to CM Bhupesh Baghel.

The source of these alleged payments is under investigation, they added.

The polling in the state was held in two phases.

The first phase was held in 20 constituencies on November 7 with 223 candidates in the contest while the polling in the remaining constituencies with 958 candidates were held in the second phase on November 17.

The voter turnout for both phases combined was 76.31 per cent, slightly lower than the 2018 polls. In the first phase, 78 per cent of voter turnout was recorded and in the second phase, it was 75.88 per cent.

The four main contenders in the Chhattisgarh Elections 2023 are the BJP, Congress, Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (JCC) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Other regional outfits like the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Hamar Raj Party (HRP) and the Left parties are also in the contest.

The results of assembly polls in four states – Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Telangana- are being considered as the semifinal before the Lok Sabha polls which are scheduled for 2024. (ANI)

Charge Sheet Against Sanjay Singh In Excise Policy Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has lodged a supplementary prosecution complaint (charge sheet) on Saturday against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh in a money laundering case related to the Delhi excise policy case.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4th in connection with his alleged involvement in the excise policy case. He is currently being held in judicial custody at Tihar Jail.

On November 28, the Delhi court issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh’s bail application in connection with a money laundering case related to an alleged liquor irregularities case.

The Special Judge, MK Nagpal of the Rouse Avenue Court, has asked the ED to file a reply by December 6 and listed the matter for hearing on December 6.

Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in the case on October 4.

The Special Judge MK Nagpal on November 24, extended the judicial custody of Sanjay Singh till December 4.

Appearing for the ED, the Special Public Prosecutor Naveen Kumar Matta apprised the Court that the chargesheet (Supplementary Prosecution Complaint) will be filed in the matter very soon and within the prescribed time limit.

Recently, the Delhi High Court dismissed AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, challenging his remand and arrest in the alleged liquor irregularities case.

ED claimed that Singh and his associates played a part in the Delhi government’s decision to give licenses to alcohol shops and merchants in 2020, causing losses to the state exchequer and violating anti-corruption laws.

ED has previously searched several locations, including the homes and offices of Sanjay Singh’s close associate, Ajit Tyagi and other contractors and businessmen who allegedly benefited from the policy. In its nearly 270-page supplementary charge sheet, the ED has called Sisodia a key conspirator in the case.

The Delhi liquor scam case or the excise policy case pertains to allegations that the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 allowed cartelization and favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge that has been strongly refuted by the AAP.

ED filed its first chargesheet in the case last year. The agency said it has so far undertaken over 200 search operations in this case after filing an FIR after taking cognizance of a CBI case that was registered on the recommendation of the Delhi lieutenant governor.

The CBI inquiry was recommended based on the findings of the Delhi Chief Secretary’s report filed in July showing prima facie violations of the GNCTD Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR) 1993, Delhi Excise Act 2009, and Delhi Excise Rules 2010. (ANI)

Expecting More Insurgent Groups To Join: Biren Invoking UNLF Peace Accord

As the Central and Manipur governments have signed a peace agreement with the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), to renounce violence and join the mainstream, Chief Minister Biren Singh hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday for the same and expressed hope on more insurgent groups to come forward and join the peace-making process.

The peace agreement was signed with the state’s oldest valley-based militant group on November 29 in the national capital in the presence of Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and some members of the UNLF.

Manipur CM N Biren Singh was accorded a hero’s welcome by cabinet colleagues, legislators and party workers on his return today from New Delhi, two days after the ceasefire agreement signing.

Speaking to ANI on the peace accord, CM Biren Singh said, “It was historic for Manipur. This group was established around 1964 and no peace initiation has taken place since then. Fortunately, it happened this time.”

The peace agreement signed with the UNLF by the Centre and the Manipur government marks the end of a six-decade-long armed movement.

“We were trying to negotiate continuously for the peace agreement for the last 3-4 years under the leadership of PM Modi. Finally, we did it. This agreement is a great achievement for the Indian government as well as the Manipur government. Our Home Minister Amit Shah ji’s guidance also facilitated it,” he added.

He further asserted that more insurgent groups who haven’t signed the accord will follow suit with UNLF and follow the path to peace.

“With this large group joining the peace process, we are expecting more insurgent groups who have not signed their accord with the government of India to join and follow the path of peace,” CM Biren Singh said.

“Then the peace will be restored in Manipur also and we can march ahead in the development, for the welfare of the state, for the welfare of the country. That is my expectation. That is why I am trying very hard under the guidance of PM Modi and Amit Shah,” he added.

The UNLF was formed in 1964 and has been operating both within and outside Indian Territory. The agreement is poised to give a fillip to usher in a new era of peace in the North East in general and Manipur in particular.

The agreement will not only bring an end to hostilities between UNLF and security forces, which have claimed precious lives on both sides over the last more than half a century but also provide an opportunity to address the longstanding concerns of the community.

It is hoped that the return of UNLF to the mainstream will also encourage other valley-based armed groups to participate in the peace process in due course.

A Peace Monitoring Committee (PMC) will be constituted to oversee the enforcement of the agreed ground rules. The development is likely to be a significant step in restoring peace and normalcy in the state.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs also said that the agreement is poised to usher in a new era of peace in the Northeast in general and Manipur in particular.

The MHA, in its statement, added that in line with the vision of Prime Minister Modi and under the guidance of the Union Home Minister, the Centre has signed agreements with several armed groups of the North East region since 2014 to end militancy and promote development.

Further, as per the statement, this is the first time a valley-based Manipuri armed group has agreed to return to the mainstream by abjuring violence and agreeing to honour the Constitution of India and the laws of the land.

Terming it a landmark achievement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the peace agreement realised PM Modi’s vision of all-inclusive development and providing a better future to the youth in Northeast India. (ANI)

Ayodhya Yogi

Yogi, Scindia Inspect Shri Ram International Airport In Ayodhya

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath along with Union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia and General (Retd) VK Singh inspected the under-construction Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport in Ayodhya on Saturday.

“We all know that the airstrip in Ayodhya was very small. We had only 178 acres of land here. We could not have a big international airport in such a small strip. Under Prime Minister Modi’s direction, the proposal that was sent to the central government was approved. After being provided 821-acre land by the state government, the Airport Authority of India is working to develop the new airport at a war footing. The new airport will be ready by December 15,” Yogi said.

Civil Aviation Minister Scindia said that Ayodhya’s airport should reflect the city’s historic significance and culture.

“When someone from the country or abroad visits an airport then he/she should get a glimpse of the city’s historic significance. Hence Ayodhya’s airport should not be just another airport. We have tried to implement Ayodhya’s culture in its airport,” Scindia said.

“The 6500 square meter airport can land two to three flights in an hour. 2200 metre runway will be constructed which will be extended to 3700 metres in the second stage. This will help all international planes to land at Ayodhya,” he added.

The trio also visited the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir construction site in Ayodhya and offered prayers to the Ram Lala.

Earlier in the day, security was beefed up and preparations were underway at Ayodhya for their visit.

Meanwhile, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will invite 4000 sadhus ahead of the grand consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla on January 22.

The invited members have been requested not to bring in their private priests as they will not be allowed to enter the Ram temple.

The process of distribution of invitation letters has started. The invitations are being sent to various ‘maths’ from the General Secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, Champat Rai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. The foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya was laid by PM Modi on August 5, 2020.

It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court’s verdict in 2019 on the Ayodhya dispute paved the way for the construction of the grand Ram temple. Following the apex court verdict, the Centre set up Shri Ram Janma Bhoomi Tirtha Kshetra’ Trust to take all decisions regarding the construction of a magnificent Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The construction of the temple has been progressing at a steady pace under the supervision of the Trust. The idol of Ram Lalla will be installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. (ANI)

Election Commission of India Mizoram

Nearly 4000 Personnel Assigned: Counting Day Preparations In Full Swing In Mizoram

As the Election Commission of India rescheduled the counting of votes for assembly elections in Mizoram to December 4, preparations are in full swing to ensure smooth conduct of operations.

The state election department informed that all preparations and arrangements have been made for the counting scheduled to be held on Monday.

On the rescheduling of the counting day from December 3, the ECI on Friday said that the date has been revised for counting in Mizoram as several representations were received from various quarters of the state to change the vote counting day.

According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Mizoram, the counting will be conducted in 13 centres across the state and 40 counting halls. There will be 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables in 40 counting halls across the state.

Nearly 4000 personnel will be involved in the counting of votes, as per the state election department.

Earlier, Mizoram DGP Anil Shukla told ANI that, all arrangements have been made to ensure an incident-free day of counting.

Polling for the 40-seat Mizoram assembly was held on November 7 and 80.66 per cent of voter turnout was recorded in the state.

The exit poll results of Mizoram have indicated a neck-and-neck fight between the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the political observers have also predicted the same.

But, both the regional parties have kept their hopes high over winning an absolute majority to form the next government in Mizoram.

“We are very much confident that, ZPM will get the absolute majority seats and form the government,” ZPM Working President K Sapdanga who contested from Aizawl North-III constituency earlier told ANI.

MNF led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, ZPM led by former IPS officer Lalduhoma and Congress contested in all 40 assembly seats, while BJP contested in only 23 seats in the state. (ANI)

Central Pollution Control Board

Delhi: Air Quality Recorded As Very Poor In Several Areas

The air quality in the national capital was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category in several areas, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

As per the official data, the air quality in Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar was recorded as ‘Very Poor’. Anand Vihar had an AQI reading of 388, while Ashok Vihar had an AQI reading of 386 at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

However, this is a slight improvement in both areas, as air quality in Anand Vihar and Ashok Vihar was recorded as ‘severe’ with AQI readings of 412 and 405, respectively, at 6 am on Friday.

The AQI at Lodhi Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was recorded at 349 and 366, respectively, falling in the ‘Very Poor’ category.

Rahul Sachdeva, a local, complained of breathing problems due to pollution.

“I came here with my daughter for a segway. The fun would have doubled if the pollution was less. We are having breathing issues due to pollution. Children are coughing,” he said

Abhishek, another local from the city, said, “You can see the situation, it is bad. The pollution is very high. There are breathing issues.”

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said on Wednesday that Grap-3 has been lifted in the national capital but the government is trying to ensure that Grap-1 and 2 are strictly implemented.

The air quality index from 0 to 100 is considered ‘good’, 100 to 200 ‘moderate’, 200 to 300 ‘poor’, 300 to 400 ‘very poor’ and from 400 to 500 or above ‘severe’. (ANI)

Congress Rahul Gandhi

Cong Aims To Have 50% Women CM In 10 Yrs: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that the mission of the grand old party would be to have 50 percent of the women Chief Ministers in 10 years.

“A good target for the Congress party would be if, in 10 years from today, 50 per cent of our chief ministers are women. Today we don’t have a single chief minister who is a woman. But I know many women in the Congress party have the quality to be very good chief ministers. We have to ensure that at every level, there are more and more women in the organisation and this cannot be done through events, ” Rahul Gandhi said while addressing the ‘Utsaah’ Mahila Congress State Convention in Ernakulam, Kerala.

Stressing the need for a dynamic shift in the country’s political system by minimizing discrimination, he said, “It has to be done through a process. In the political system, we have different types of discrimination, we have caste discrimination, and language, but women are the most discriminated against. There are no women in this room who are comfortable walking on the streets at night.”

Toeing the line of BJP for women empowerment, he added, “From the organisation point of view, it is very important to be aggressive on women empowerment.”

He further slammed the RSS and BJP on women’s issues and said that the biggest question is “Are the women allowed to share power in the RSS?”

“The central fight between BJP and Congress is about how women should be treated. In the picture of freedom, you will find Mahatma Gandhi always standing and advocating for women. You will see women taking the front in the freedom struggle. Congress party has many women presidents and has PM women president because we fundamentally believe women should share power in the country.”

“In its entire history, RSS has not allowed women in its organisation. The question is are the women allowed to share power in the RSS? The RSS is purely a man-oriented organisation,” Rahul Gandhi said.

He also alleged that the RSS decide what women should do and what they should wear.

“What women wear, what they do is the decision of her only. In the RSS, they decide what women should do and on what basis women should be respected. For the first time, I have seen a bill passed in parliament that will be implemented a decade later. The only bill which the BJP has passed after 10 years is of the women empowerment (Women reservation bill),” he added. (ANI)
