Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Student leader Shehla Rashid Hijab

Let The Girl Decide If She Wants To Wear The Hijab: Ex JNU Leader Shehla

Former Jawaharlal Nehru University Student leader Shehla Rashid has spoken out for the rights of women to choose if they want to wear the Hijab or not.

Speaking in an ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, the former student leader says she used to wear the Hijab when she was younger and the choice of wearing the Hijab must be left to the individual

“I’ll tell you my personal view because I wore the hijab in 12th class and I was reading a lot of Islamic literature at that time and I went very deep into it and I realised that I should do this. But after a while, I gave it up on my own. I’ll come straight to the hijab ban and why I support it. For many girls, it is a passport to get out of home. As girls, we are given certain perceptions that boys do not get. So for many girls, if you tell them not to wear hijab, it’s not idealistic, as they may be told, we are sorry you cannot go to school anymore. So for many girls, it might actually be the first step towards freedom” she said.

“It’s not just that the hijab is forced on the girls. She’s also an individual; she’s also a member of the community and can decide for herself what she wants tomorrow if she decides she doesn’t want to wear the hijab then that is fair enough” she added.

Speaking on the controversy that was triggered after former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s TV debate, Shehla Rashid said that there was a place for Faith and a place for science.

“I’ll be honest with you I don’t know exactly what she said but I saw things on TV Of course, it was all over the TV What I feel and what I’ve realised is that, as a rational person who also does not identify as an atheist. I feel that there is a place for Faith and there is a place for science” she said.

Shehla Rashid had been thrust into the limelight in 2016 when she led the protest on the arrest of then JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar and others. The JNU student leaders were arrested in connection with shouting alleged anti-national slogans at a march marked to protest the execution of Parliament Attack accused Afzal Guru.

In the Podcast with ANI, Shehla for the first time opened up about those protests saying that as the voice of the student community she had tried to steer the narrative in an effective way.

” You have to understand that I as a union representative represent all the sections of the University, so I think I took a very measured approach. I had to balance out things. I had to also fight back against you know the narrative that was being pushed that, you know a a lot of like perverted kind of things were said about the university. I had to battle that and at the same time I had to ensure that I’m not taking a position that everybody in the University does not agree with because that that was a moment where where I became the spokesperson of the University at the national level, so I did not want to say any such thing that you know everybody in the university did not agree with” she said

“So we even engaged with the right-wing, we even gave space to the right-wing to speak at those protests because we are not a party unlike you know the say for example the faction that organized the original protest they were a party they are not bound to give everybody representation but we as a union we are bound to give everybody representation and I made sure that I steered the Narrative very effectively and you know without causing further chaos at that point because there are kids there are poor kids who study in the University” she further added.

Shehla Rashid revealed that at that time the forum that she represented had been against the death penalty for Afzal Guru as well as backed the cause of self-determination for Kashmir.

“There are people there, student groups who oppose the death penalty per se. So for example my student group and the people who organized that event for example they also supported people’s right to self-determination. Let’s just say there were different motivations for different people and there are different narratives. I mean, I was a union representative and one thing that you do as an elected representative is you have to be very conscious of the fact that you do not just represent your party. Yes, my party’s position was anti-death penalty, I sort of endorsed that position. At the same time, you are representing an entire University and not everyone in the University agrees with self-determination many people will say that no nothing doing in Kashmir is part of India right. So I was representing everybody even though you know my supporters voted for me” Shehla Rashid said about the pro-Afzal protests that had occurred in 2016 in JNU” she said

“Of course there was that element of people who did believe that for electoral gains he (Afzal Guru) was hurriedly executed you know while people who had been sentenced before him had not. Manmohan Singh government was in power, they had to face elections and you know they took a political decision to hang him. That was the general feeling in Kashmir” she added.

Shehla Rashid says that in general the student population at the time had taken an anti-death penalty position.

“What happens in JNU is that overall, all the student groups in JNU, baring say the NSUI ABVP, will take an anti-death penalty position in general and it is this sort of global narrative of abolition of death penalty. Earlier we used to have the death penalty when we didn’t have the prison system so people would be guillotined or they would be hanged publicly. But once the prison system developed, there’s a difference between a retributive system of justice and a restorative system of justice. So what people in JNU and people generally on the left of the spectrum all over the world advocate is a reformative or restorative system” she said. (ANI)

Arjun Ram Meghwal

Want To Make Rajasthan A $350 BN Economy: Meghwal

Expressing confidence that the BJP will win the Rajasthan election 2023 going to be held on November 25, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday said that the saffron party wants to make the state a “USD 350 billion economy.”

This comes after the BJP released its manifesto for Rajasthan that promises schemes for youth, women, farmers, and labourers.

“BJP has prepared its manifesto to make Rajasthan advanced. In that manifesto, there are schemes for youth, women, farmers, and labourers. We want to make Rajasthan a 350 billion dollar economy,” said the senior BJP leader Meghwal.

The party’s manifesto outlines several key resolutions aimed at improving the lives of citizens: The party plans to increase the financial assistance provided to farmers under this scheme to Rs 12,000 per year under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.

The Laho Incentive scheme aims to support poor families by providing a savings bond at the birth of their daughters. The bond will mature over time, providing Rs 26,000 in class 6, Rs 18,000 in class 9, Rs 10,000 in class 10, Rs 12,000 in class 11, Rs 14,000 in class 12, Rs 50,000 in the first and last year of vocational courses, and a lump sum of Rs 1 lakh at the age of 21.

BJP also aims to help the economically weaker families’ students, who will receive annual assistance of Rs 1,200 to purchase school bags, books, and uniforms through Direct Benefit Transfer.

It also plans to invest Rs 40,000 crores in the health sector under the Bhamashah Health Infrastructure Mission, which aims to expand and modernize health infrastructure.

The party plans to form a Special Investigation Team to quickly investigate paper leak cases and take strict action against the culprits.

Speaking on allegations of corruption against the Congress government in the state and the BJP’s promise of inquiry into it, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said, “These are very serious allegations. The massive corruption that has taken place will be inquired into by an SIT and action will be taken.”

“We have to stop corruption. When we stop corruption, the money, and the available funds can become available to the poor. We will make an adequate system for this. We have had a detailed discussion and drafted this,” added Prahlad Joshi.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas also slammed BJP over LPG gas rates, as well as, the prices of petrol and diesel.

He said, “Why is BJP doing drama? Why are they making announcements? They hold the Central government, and they can make the rates of cylinder Rs 450 and implement it from tomorrow. BJP only decides the rate of cylinder, petrol and diesel. They shouldn’t do drama as the public understands that. They don’t need to announce anything in the manifesto. They have the treasure of the whole country. They should pass the orders today itself.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda released the party’s ‘Sankalp Patra’ (manifesto) for forthcoming Rajasthan assembly polls in Jaipur on Thursday.

During this, BJP national president JP Nadda, along with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Rajasthan BJP President CP Joshi, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Vasundhara Raje, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Satish Poonia, and others, were present on the occasion.

The Sankalp Patra has been named ‘Aapano Agranee Rajasthan Sankalp Patr 2003’ (our leading Rajasthan manifesto).

During the manifesto release, BJP National President JP Nadda emphasised the party’s commitment to its manifesto, contrasting it with other parties for whom, he claimed, is merely a formality. He asserted that for the BJP, the manifesto serves as a roadmap for development.

Rajasthan is set to undergo assembly polls on November 25 and the counting of votes will be done on December 3.

The BJP won 163 seats in the 2013 Legislative Assembly elections and formed the government in Rajasthan. In the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress won 99 seats, while the BJP won 73 seats in the 200-member House. Gehlot eventually took the oath as CM with the support of BSP MLAs and Independents. Israeli Forces Seize Key Hamas Harbor Base

Israeli forces seized control over a Hamas harbor base in central Gaza, the Israeli Defense Forces announced on Thursday.

In the combined raid of the navy, armour and engineering forces, along with air force support, about ten tunnel shafts were destroyed, and four buildings of associated terrorist infrastructure were destroyed, the IDF said.

Hamas used the facility to train its naval forces and to direct and carry out naval attacks, the IDF said. Under the cover of a civilian naval anchorage, Hamas took advantage of the place for the purpose of training and carrying out attacks, using civilian vessels and Gaza’s naval police boats.

Israeli forces eliminated ten terrorists and cleared all the buildings in the area of the anchorage.

In addition, a monument glorifying the events of the Mavi Marmara raid of 2010 was toppled. Some of the fighters of the Israeli Navy’s 13th flotilla who were involved in capturing the harbor also fought aboard the Mavi Marmara.

In 2010, the Israeli Navy intercepted a six-ship flotilla trying to symbolically break the Gaza blockade. Violent clashes broke out aboard the Mavi Marmara, the flotilla’s largest ship. Ten Turkish Islamists, many of whom were armed, were killed. Turkey severed its ties with Israel over the affair.

On a number of occasions since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, the Israeli Navy disrupted attempts to smuggle Iranian weapons by sea to the Strip. (ANI/TPS)

Myanmar Mizoram

Thousands Seek Refuge In Mizoram Following Airstrikes In Myanmar

Around 5000 Myanmar nationals are now taking shelter in the Zokhawthar area of Mizoram’s Champhai district as they fled from Myanmar and entered the Champhai district following a fresh airstrike by the Myanmar army in the bordering areas along the Indo-Myanmar border.

The district administration, NGOs, the Young Mizo Association, and the Village Council have provided food, clothes, and medicines to the Myanmar refugees who are now taking shelter in makeshift tents in the Zokhawthar area.

According to the leaders of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Zokhawthar, there are around 4-5 relief and refugee camps in the area.

Zokhawthar is a village in Mizoram’s Champhai district, which shares its border with Myanmar.

There are around 160 families from Myanmar now residing in Lipui in the Zokhawthar area.

According to F Biaktinsanga, the Financial Secretary of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), a significant influx of people, estimated between 5,000 to 6,000, is there in India from Myanmar. These individuals are being supported by various NGOs and the district administration, which provide essential items such as food and clothing.

“5000 people or 6,000 people are coming to India. Here, some NGO organisations provide food and clothing. The district administration and minister are also helping the Myanmar people with what they need. Here, they are living very peacefully. We care about them and whatever problem they have, we get help from the Young Mizo Association (YMA). We just go and help them if they have problems. Many children are here, and some women are also here. We provide Daal, cerelac and milk for the children and some vitamins. We also provide diapers and clothes for children because they didn’t take anything with them when they fled their country. They do not have anything like blankets or mattress, so we provide them,” F. Biaktinsanga, YMA Zokhawthar Financial Secretary, told ANI.

Mal Sawm Par, a national from Myanmar, shared his experience with ANI about the hardships faced after fleeing his home country. He arrived in Zokhawthar about two years ago, leaving behind a village that was burned down and bringing nothing with him.

Despite the challenges, he found support from the local community who provided him with food, clothing, and medical care.

“We came here about 2 years ago and then we didn’t bring anything and our village was burned. In Zokhawthar, some people give us clothes and food. Now we have nothing so we cannot go back. It is also very difficult to go back so we have to stay here. How long we stay here, we also don’t know; nobody knows. The people here are good to us. All the people help us so much and give us what we need. When we get sick, they give us a doctor. The medicine is free for us,” Mal Sawm Par, a Myanmar national, told ANI.

In a recent development along the Myanmar border, the People’s Defence Force (PDF) of Myanmar attacked and captured two Myanmar Army posts. This led to 39 Myanmar Army personnel seeking refuge in Mizoram and subsequently surrendering to the Mizoram Police. The total number of Myanmar Army personnel who have surrendered so far stands at 42. More than 5000 people have taken refuge in two border villages, Mizoram Inspector-General of Police (IGP) (Headquarters), Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said on Tuesday.

“On Sunday evening, PDF of Myanmar attacked the Myanmar Army post along the Myanmar border. Yesterday evening, two Myanmar posts were captured by the PDF. As a result, the Myanmar Army started taking shelter in Mizoram. 39 of them surrendered to Mizoram Police last evening…We handed them over to both our governing force…The total number of Myanmar Army personnel who surrendered before Mizoram Police is 42…More than 5000 people took refuge in two villages along the border and we also got about 20 civilian injuries – 8 of them are taken to Aizawl for better medical treatment…One succumbed to his stray bullet injuries last evening…Since last night there has been no more commotion at the border…Now it is quite calm but we don’t know whether Myanmar Army will attack from the air. We can’t rule out airstrike at present…” Mizoram Inspector-general of police (IGP) (Headquarters), Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said on Tuesday. (ANI)
