Ramanand Sagar's 'Ramayan

Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’ Returns To TV Amid ‘Adipurush’ Row

Amid the ‘Adipurush’ controversy, the iconic teleserial ‘Ramayana’ from the late 1980s is set to be telecasted again.

Taking to Instagram, channel Shemaroo Tv shared the promo of the super hit show ‘Ramayan’ and captioned it in Hindi, “We are bringing to you all dear viewers the world-famous mythological serial “Ramayan”… Watch “Ramayan” from 3rd July at 7:30 PM only on your favourite channel #ShemarooTV.”

The mythological show will begin airing from July 3 at 7:30 pm on the Shemaroo Tv channel.

Ramanand Sagar directed ‘Ramayana’ was a popular serial in the late 1980s.

The series featured Arun Govil as Ram, Deepika Chikhalia as Sita and Sunil Lahri as Lakshman. Late Dara Singh portrayed Hanuman and Arvind Trivedi was featured as Ravana. The show was originally telecast from January 25, 1987 to July 31, 1988 and received massive responses from the audience.

The announcement of the show returning to the TV screens came at a time when it was being compared with Om Raut’s recently released Pan-India film ‘Adipurush’ on social media.

Soon after the makers unveiled the promo of ‘Ramayan’ fans flooded the comment section with red heart emoticons.

“Jai SiyaRam,” a fan commented.

Another fan wrote, “Jai Shree Ram.”

Earlier in 2020, during the covid-lockdown, Doordarshan decided to re-telecast the mythological series on public demand, Union Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister Prakash Javadekar informed.

Talking about ‘Adipurush’, the film, which is a dramatic retelling of Ramayana, faced backlash on social media for its poor VFX and controversial dialogues including ‘marega bete’, ‘bua ka bagicha hain kya’ and ‘jalegi tere baap ki’.

From critics to reviewers, several people from across the country have expressed disappointment over the film’s certain dialogues. In the wake of such flak, the makers of ‘Adipurush’ revamped the dialogues.

Talking exclusively to ANI, Ramanand Sagar’s son Prem Sagar earlier said, “Manoj Muntashir is well-informed about Hinduism. I don’t understand how he even conceived such dialogues in the film. It might be a misjudgement that the younger generation would like it. But you can’t do this with the audience. Don’t say it is based on Valmiki Ramayan, give it any other name. Make it a ‘fantasy’ film. But if you’re making Ramayan then you cannot hurt the sentiments. People watch this with devotion.”

“I have seen the clips of the movie and had a lot of interaction with people like Sunil Lehri (who played Laxman in Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’), so some problem is there. I don’t even want to watch the film. Ravan was very knowledgeable and you are blackening the golden Lanka (sone ki Lanka), and his look with 5 heads up and 5 heads down,” he added.

Actor Sunil Lahri, who played Laxman in Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’, earlier told ANI, “I have seen the film. I am very disappointed after watching the film… The thought that crossed my mind was, why did I go to see the film? I didn’t like the picture at all. There are only two things that I can say I liked about the film — background music and the cinematography. Barring these two aspects, the film left me sorely disappointed.”

“After seeing the picture, I had no clue how to react to it. Setting myself aside, since I played a character in Ramayana, even the people who sat around me at the theatre were not happy watching the movie. Two women sat saying to each other, ‘Let’s get up and take a walk. What nonsense are we watching?’ To that, the other woman said, ‘Let’s see the visual effects if nothing else’. A man sitting next to me told his friend, ‘What are they showing in the name of Ramayana?'” he added.

Directed by Om Raut, ‘Adipurush’ stars Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Goddess Sita, Sunny Singh as Laxman, and Saif Ali Khan as Ravan. (ANI)

Kriti's Mom Pens Cryptic Note

Kriti’s Mom Pens Cryptic Note Amid ‘Adipurush’ Row

Amid massive backlash against Kriti Sanon-starrer ‘Adipurush’, the actor’s mother Geeta Sanon penned a cryptic post extending support to the film.

In an Instagram note, Geeta spoke about not looking at a person’s mistakes, but understanding their emotions.
She posted, “Jaki rahi bhavna jaisi, Prabhu murat dekhi tin taisi.” She explained the meaning of this, and wrote, “Iska arth hai ki achi soch aur drishti se dekho toh srishti sundar hin dikhai degi. Bhagvan Raam ne hi hume sikhaya hai ki Shabri ke ber me uska prem dekho naki ye ki wo jhoothe the… Insan ki galtiyon ko nhi uski bhawna ko samjho. Jai Shri Ram (With a positive outlook, the whole world will seem beautiful. Lord Ram himself taught us to find love in Shabri’s ‘ber’, and not pay heed to the fact that Shabri lied. Don’t focus on a person’s mistakes, focus on their emotions. Jai shri Ram).”

The post evoked mixed reactions.

“Ekdum sahi,” Kriti’s younger sister Nupur commented.

“So true,” a social media user commented.

However, several social media users called out Kriti’s mom.

“You shouldn’t support this anti Hindu film blindly. You should teach your daughter Hindu values instead of encouraging her in anti Hindu activities,” an Instagram user wrote.

Directed by Om Raut, ‘Adipurush’, which is which is a dramatic retelling of Ramayana, has been constantly under the scanner ever since the makers released the film.

From critics to reviewers, several people from across the country have expressed disappointment over the film’s certain dialogues. Some of which include ‘marega bete’, ‘bua ka bagicha hain kya’ and ‘jalegi tere baap ki’.

In the wake of such flak, the makers of ‘Adipurush’ revamped the dialogues. The film stars Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti as Goddess Sita, Sunny Singh as Laxman and Saif Ali Khan as Ravan.

Amid the row, Nepali capital Kathmandu’s Mayor Balendra Shah enforced a ban on Indian movies following the ‘Adipurush’ dialogue controversy. In less than an hour of the KMC Mayor’s decision, the Pokhara Mayor Dhanraj Acharya also sent letters to three movie theatres to halt the screening of all Indian movies starting Monday morning. With orders from the mayors of both Metropolitan cities, the halls in both places have taken off the screening of Indian movies from their schedule and replaced them with Hollywood and Nepali movies. ‘Adipurush Is An Epic Joke; Better Watch Japanese Anime or Ramanand Sagar’

Dhairya Gupta, a movie buff from Lucknow, says that the movie Adipurush makes a mockery of not only our sacred epic the Ramayana but also revered figures in Hinduism. His views

There is already an outrage over the dialogues and depiction of characters in Adipurush in the mainstream and social media. There is also a demand to ban the movie for wrongful depiction of the Hindu epic Ramayana and ‘twisting the narrative’. I feel the demand is justified as the use of sadak-chhap (pedestrian) language in many scenes and the creative liberty in portrayal of characters are overbearing.

Take for example the by-now well-known dialogue of Lord Hanuman, whose tail has been set afire with an oil-soaked cloth: ‘Kapda Tere Baap Ka, Tel Tere Baap Ka… Jalegi Bhi Tere Baap Ki’. Such foul language coming from one of the most revered figures in Hinduism! Isn’t Manoj Muntashir, ashamed of stooping so low? Worse, all this was done by making tall claims of being inspired by Valmiki Ramayana, and making a movie for the younger generations to know about our culture.

Let me begin with the portrayal of the character of Rawana, which is perhaps the biggest distortion in Adipurush. For all we know, Rawana was a Brahmin and a Prakaand Pundit (a highly learned man) according to the original epic by Valmiki. However, the way Rawana has been projected in the movie, he comes as a cross between a monster and a clown.

The character of Rawana is the biggest distortion in Adipurush, Says Gupta (right)

In fact, Rawana (Saif Ali Khan) and Meghnaad (Vatsal Seth) look more like characters stolen from Avengers of Marvel series or from a graphic video game. Some of the most offensive scenes show Rawana feeding flesh to a demon; another one shows him wearing a metal facemask like a welding mechanic and fixing his armour; in another scene he is sleeping with snakes and seemingly enjoying it; in yet another, his ten heads are shown floating around him like a juggler’s trick. How would one ever explain such theatrics to one’s children who watched the movie?

ALSO READ: ‘Ban Adipurush’: Cine Workers Body Writes to PM

I would never ever refer to the film to people who are planning to see the movie with their younger children who are still in the learning phase. It’s better to sit with them and watch the original Ramayan of Ramanand Sagar relayed on Doordarshan or the Japanese animation movie The Legend of Prince Rama which were way better than Adipurush.

And to make things shamelessly worse, Muntashir is claiming that there has been a kind of diversion, a division in the dialogues and they have been made simple as there are multiple characters in the film and all of them can’t speak the language. To my surprise, in a TV interview, he is also substantiating his `work’ by asking for artist freedom like Tulsidas!

The film is a stark example of a typical bankruptcy of brains and morals and proves that by merely spending crores of rupees (₹600 crore to be precise), you cannot produce quality content. Also, if we talk about the much hyped VFX, even a bunch of passionate college goers or internet buffs could create a more sensible experience.

Perhaps the only two characters who somehow remain close to the original epic depiction are of Ram and Sita, played gracefully by Prabhas and Kriti Sanon. Mercifully, these two characters were spared from the film-makers creative liberty. But, they still are unable to save this trash of cinematic work

My two-bit to the association of film broadcasters: they should have at least watched this movie (as it is related a religious theme) before releasing it in theatres as it could not only have saved peoples’ money but also saved them from incurring loses which this movie is definitely going to give them

Muntashir Gets Police Security Amid ‘Adipurush’ Backlash

After facing backlash for the dialogues in ‘Adipurush’, writer Manoj Muntashir has requested protection, citing a threat to his life. Mumbai Police has provided him security and said that they are investigating the matter.

Earlier, Manoj along with the directors and producers of the film decided to make specific changes in the dialogue of the movie.
During a conversation with ANI, he said, “Our aim was to present the true heroes of Sanatan to our younger generation. There is an objection to 5 dialogues and they will be changed. If people are not liking some parts, then it’s our responsibility to fix them.”

He also took to his Twitter handle and wrote a long post that why he has been questioned and abused for his dialogues in the film. “It is possible that in a 3-hour film, I have written something different from your imagination for 3 minutes, but I could not know why you were in such a hurry to write Sanatan-Drohi on my forehead. Have you not heard the song ‘Jai Shri Ram’, Didn’t hear ‘Shivoham’, Haven’t heard ‘Ram Siya Ram’? These praises of Sanatan in Adipurush are also born from my pen. I have also written ‘Teri Mitti’ and ‘Desh Mere’.”

He further mentioned, “We have created Adipurush for Sanatan Seva, which you are seeing in large numbers and I am sure you will see in future as well.”

Manoj also shared, “Why this post? Because for me there is nothing greater than your feeling. I can give countless arguments in favour of my dialogues, but this will not reduce your pain. Me and the producer-director of the film have decided that some of the dialogues which are hurting you, we’ll revise them, and they’ll be added to the film this week.”

As many opposed the controversial dialogues used in the film, a group of people protested, expressing their displeasure over the film. They were later detained by Hazratganj Police.

Kathmandu Adipurush Pokahara

After Kathmandu, Pokhara Bans All Indian Films Amid Adipurush Dialogue Row

Standing alongside Kathmandu Metropolis, the Pokhara Metropolitan City has also enforced a ban on the screening of Indian films following the ‘Adipurush’ dialogue controversy.

An announcement in this regard was made by Pokhara Mayor on Sunday, directing cinema halls in the Metropolitan city of central Nepal to stop screening of all Bollywood films starting from Monday morning.
Earlier on Sunday evening, Nepali capital Kathmandu’s Mayor Balendra Shah had enforced a ban on Indian films. Soon after the announcement, the Pokhara Mayor, Dhanraj Acharya, sent letters to three movie theatres directing them to stop the screening of all Indian films.

After the orders from the mayors of both Metropolitan cities, the cinema halls in both here have scrapped the screening of Hindi or Bollywood films from their schedule and replaced them with Hollywood and Nepali movies.

Kathmandu Mayor on Sunday evening took to Facebook and announced a ban on the screening of all Indian films by deploying the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police.

“Indian film Adipurush had a dialogue claiming Janaki was India’s daughter which is objectionable and we had given three days’ ultimatum to correct it. There is no doubt that it is the first duty of every government, government agency, non-governmental sector and Nepali citizen to protect the national interest by keeping Nepal’s freedom, independence and self-respect intact,” the Kathmandu mayor stated in the Facebook post.

The mayor further claimed it is the duty of all the government authorities to protect the national interest and stated the screening of films will damage the national identity, nationality and cultural unity.

“If the film is shown as it is, it seems that Nepal’s nationality, cultural unity and national identity will be severely damaged and irreparable damage will be done. Due to cultural encroachment on Nepal from that movie, this metropolitan city has attracted serious attention,” the mayor stated.

Shah stated that the film is against the national interest and announced a ban on the screening of all Indian films in Kathmandu starting Monday morning. “If the film is allowed to be shown in other areas within the country and abroad, it will establish a misleading fact, so it is prohibited to show any Indian film in the Kathmandu metropolitan city until the objectionable parts are removed from the said film,” he said.

As per the mayor’s secretariat, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police has been deployed on Sunday evening and relayed the message to ban the screening of Indian films from Monday morning. The Kathmandu Metropolitan has 17 film theatres, as per the record of the metropolis.

Soon after the announcement of the ban on screening in the Nepali capital, the ‘T-Series’ the production company of ‘Adipurush’ has written to Nepali Mayor stating it was “never intentional or deliberate to cause any disharmony for anyone,”

Defending the disputed dialogue, the company also claimed that it wanted to show respect towards women quoting the dialogue which was objected to by the Nepali mayor in particular.

“We request you to view the film in its artistic form and support the intention of reaching out to a larger audience to create interest in our history,” the letter signed by Radhika Das from the Super Cassette Industries Private Ltd also known as T-Series concludes.

The Hindi film Adipurush released all across the globe on Friday contains a dialogue that states ‘Janaki is a daughter of India’. The dialogue, however, has been removed in Nepal after the censor board of Nepal objected to it and delayed its release for Friday.

The film company had silenced the dialogue after which it received permission to screen in the theatres of Nepal. However, Friday’s morning show didn’t go as planned due to a delay in the circulation of the film and fear of vandalism.

Balendra Shah, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor earlier on Friday wrote a letter to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology requesting to stop the screening of Indian films in Nepal unless an objectionable dialogue from a recently-released movie is omitted.

Shah also sent the same copy to the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Film Development Board urging the government to take diplomatic initiatives with India to remove the dialogue.

Mentioning that Article 5 and Article 56 (6) of the Constitution have assigned the responsibility to federal, provincial and local governments for the protection of national interest, Shah has said the metropolis was concerned due to cultural encroachment by the movie.

Mayor Shah on Thursday also warned that no Hindi films will be allowed to run in Kathmandu Metropolitan City until the controversial wording is removed not just in Nepal but also in India. (ANI)
