Christmas Kashmir

Christmas Bells Ring For Kashmir’s Paper Mache Artisans

As Christmas is around the corner, celebrations all over the country are in full swing. The paper mache artisans of the valley are very busy with making special balls and other gift items ahead of Christmas.

The festival time always provides joy to the valley’s paper mache artisans, who receive large orders of special balls and other gift goods. So, during this time, a maximum number of paper mache artisans are very busy making various items such as special balls, Santa Claus, stars, crescents, bangles, and other gift items that people will be distributing and decorating their homes and churches on the occasion of Christmas.

They are receiving bulk orders from within the country as well as Europe, where people are celebrating the Christmas festival with zeal and using such beautiful paper mache products made by valley artisans on a large scale.

As a result, craftsmen are constantly striving to make their products more appealing to attract overseas buyers. Kashmiri papier-mache products are recognised all over the world for their refinement and durability, and Christian people can decorate their Christmas trees this year with paper-mache balls, stars, Santa Claus, and a variety of elegant items.

Tasaduq Hussain Mir, who is a paper mache artisan told ANI, “Christmas is the biggest festival in the world and we start getting orders 6 or 7 or 8 months before. We get big orders on Christmas including balls, bells, stars, Santa Claus and different articles that go to Europe and India even people in Kashmir like them.”

He further talked about craft safari, an initiative taken by the handicraft and handloom department for the revival of Kashmir’s cultural heritage. He also praised the director of handloom and handicrafts, in Kashmir, Mehmood Ahmad Shah, for his initiative and for promoting the art and craft of Kashmir.

“Craft Safari has made us famous in the world. Luckily, Srinagar has been recognized by UNESCO as a creative city and it has led to an increase in the export of our items. This year about 20 to 25 lakh pieces are exported for Christmas. We have been getting more Christmas orders for the past two or three years and the credit for this goes to Mehmood Ahmad Shah, director of handicrafts and handlooms Sahab, he has done a lot of work for the artisans, and he has promoted their art craft. We have become famous in the world,” he added.

Syed Amjad Ali, a Dealer and paper Mache artisan also shared, “This is called paper mache as it is made using paper. We get a lot of orders during Christmas and thus for two months we just make products like balls, stars, Santa Claus, moons and all.”

Normally Kashmiri artisans make paper pache products for tourists and during the peak season of tourism, they do very good business. But on Christmas, they are also getting big orders from foreign countries where they are sending their products in huge quantities and doing satisfactory business. (ANI)

Shimla

Tourists Throng Shimla Ahead Of Year-End Festivities

The police in Shimla district said they were anticipating a huge rush of visitors ahead of Christmas and the year-end festivities.

Police said they were expecting over one lakh tourist vehicles to roll into the hill town in the last week of December, on the eve of Christmas and New Year.

The Mayor of Shimla City has planned the first-ever winter carnival to draw tourists to the state for the year-end festivities and frolicking while also promoting the traditions and culture of Himachal Pradesh.

Tourists have already started arriving in the hilly state in numbers in anticipation of snowfall in the exotic locales as the year draws to a close.

Speaking to ANI, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Shimla, said, “The police are expecting over one lakh tourist vehicles to roll into the hill town in the last week of this year.”

“Police brace for myriad challenges as the seasons change in Shimla. The number of vehicles in the city has been increasing on weekends. We will serve as facilitators for the tourists, those involved in the hospitality business and other stakeholders. We will hold meetings with all the stakeholders. Roads laden with snow are also a big challenge for us in winter. We have divided the city into five sectors, each of which will be assigned a rescue team,” Gandhi added.

“There is a steady increase in tourist vehicles. There is a particular number of vehicles entering the city from the Shogi Barrier. There are usually about 5,000 to 6,000 vehicles rolling into the city every day. However, the count has now gone up to 12000 to 13000 ahead of the year-end festivities. We expect this number to rise further to 20,000 around Christmas and the New Year,” SP Gandhi added.

“We have planned to deploy 10 platoons, which would further enable us to press 200 additional forces into action if required. The additional personnel would be deployed for both traffic management and security,” Gandhi said.

The week-long winter carnival will start on Christmas Day, December 25, in the afternoon. The Shimla Municipal Corporation is hopeful of a revival of tourism businesses here. The mayor is also keen to send across a message of clean and green tourism in the hills through the carnival.

“We are planning a winter carnival for the first time in Shimla. I have been conducting meetings with the stakeholders and officials over the past three days. We are ready to showcase our traditional folk dance forms and musical instruments. The chief minister will inaugurate the week-long winter carnival on December 25. We will also organise a traditional folk dance featuring 500 women,” Surinder Chauhan, the mayor of Shimla, said.

The tourists, meanwhile, are enjoying the cold weather conditions and snowfall in the city.

“There is a huge tourist rush. There’s a biting cold but the weather gets more pleasant as the sun breaks through the clouds. We are enjoying ourselves here. Tourists can barely hold off an urge to visit Shimla around Christmas and New Year. I would recommend a visit to Shimla at this time. We were expecting some snowfall but there hasn’t been any yet. I have decided to visit Shimla again in January, next year. We will schedule our travel after following the weather forecast as we don’t want to miss out on the snowfall next time,” Soutirtha Biswas, a tourist from West Bengal, said.

He was one among many visitors, who, while enjoying the prevailing pleasant weather in the hill-state, rued not to have experienced any snowfall yet.

“It has been a very good experience so far. I expected the weather to be this cold. I hoped to experience some snowfall as well around this time but there hasn’t been any since I arrived. This is an ideal tourism destination in December,” Ankit, a tourist from Bihar, told ANI. (ANI)

The death toll from Christmas flood and rain in the Philippines has gone up to 25, Manila Times reported citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) on Thursday.

Northern Mindanao accounted for sixteen fatalities, followed by Bicol with five, Eastern Visayas with two, and Zamboanga city with two.
According to the Disaster Management Council, 26 have been reported missing.

The total number of affected people, or 102,476 families, increased to 393,069 people. Apparently, there are 292 evacuation shelters housing 81,443 people or 20,723 families, Manila Times reported.

The calamity not only wreaked havoc in the country but also pushed more than 45,000 people into evacuation centers for shelter. The fishermen who are reportedly missing went out to sea despite the dangers associated with bad weather, the disaster agency said.

The shear line’s rains caused floods and landslides on Christmas Eve, December 24, affecting nine of the province’s 14 municipalities.

A shear line is an area where warm and cold winds meet and lead to the formation of huge rain clouds, according to the country’s weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) which further stated that rain-induced landslides are likely in some areas.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday launched an attack on the politics being played in the country in the name of religion.

From Biden To Pope, World Leaders Wish People ‘Merry Christmas’

On the occasion of Christmas, world leaders – US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Pope Francis wished a ‘Merry Christmas’ to people across the globe.

“Jill and I hope everyone is able to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season. We’re also holding a special place in our hearts for anyone missing a loved one during this time. From our family to yours, we wish you a peaceful Christmas Eve,” tweeted Biden.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis tweeted, “Tonight, God draws near to you because you are important to him. From the manger, as food for your life, He tells you: “If you feel consumed by events, if a sense of guilt and inadequacy devours you, if you hunger for justice, I am with you. #Christmas. Jesus asks us to go to the bare reality of things, to lay down all our excuses, our justifications and our hypocrisies at the feet of the manger. He whom Mary tenderly wrapped in swaddling wants us to be clothed in love. #Christmas.”

Canadian PM Trudeau also wished “joy, health, love, and peace,” and said that he is “excited to gather around the Christmas tree and spend some quality time together.”

“Merry Christmas! Like millions of Canadians, my family is excited to gather around the Christmas tree and spend some quality time together. And as we look ahead to the new year, we’re also wishing you joy, health, love, and peace,” tweeted Trudeau.

He also thanked the Canadian Armed Forces for protecting the country. “This year, I’m thinking of Canadians who go the extra mile to make our country a better place. I’m thinking of members of the Canadian Armed Forces who are protecting our country and the values we share. I’m thinking of the doctors, nurses, and first responders working throughout the holidays. And I’m thinking of everyday Canadians who find ways to show up for their friends and neighbours.”

Trudeau said that 2022 was a challenging year; for many, this holiday season won’t be easy. “But I’m confident that Canadians will continue to be there for each other in 2023 – because that’s just who we are,” he said.

Australian PM Albanese said that Christmas is a special time of year.

“It’s a day of giving. It’s a day for relaxing together with family and friends. And for many Australians, it is a day that is so central to their faith. Of course, not everyone gets to take it easy today. If you’re rostered somewhere, I want to say thank you for your service to others. If you’re working because you volunteered your time to make Christmas better for your fellow Australians, whether you’re serving lunch to those in need or you’re keeping our beaches safe, I want to express my gratitude and my admiration.”

Thanking emergency service workers and the Australian Defence Force, he said, “The same goes to all our emergency service workers and of course, all Australian Defence Force personnel, whether they’re serving here or far from home overseas. Thank you to every single one of you. Whatever form Christmas Day takes for you, may it be a very happy one and may Santa be good to every child. Merry Christmas.” (ANI)
