Biden To Commend Modi For G20 Leadership On Delhi Visit

US President Joe Biden will travel to India on Thursday for the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi from September 9-10.

During his visit, he will commend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, the White House announced in a statement. 

“While in New Delhi, the President will also commend Prime Minister Modi’s leadership of the G20 and reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation, including by hosting it in 2026,” read the statement.

During his visit to India, Biden will participate in the G20 Summit, where he and G20 partners will discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, including the clean energy transition and combatting climate change, mitigating the economic and social impacts of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks. 

“On Saturday and Sunday, the President will participate in the G20 summit, where the President and G20 partners will discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, including the clean energy transition and combatting climate change, mitigating the economic and social impacts of Putin’s war in Ukraine, and increasing the capacity of multilateral development banks, including the World Bank, to better fight poverty, including by addressing global challenges,” White House said in a statement. 

On August 29, White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre said that US President Joe Biden will “reaffirm US commitment to the G20” as the premier forum of economic cooperation globally and will also speak about a range of issues, including the social effects of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the White House said on Tuesday. Karine Jean Pierre made the remarks during a media briefing.

Announcing the US President’s schedule, Pierre said that Biden “will travel to Hanoi, Vietnam, on September 10 following his participation in the G20 Summit in New Delhi.”

Responding to a question on topline goals President Biden hopes to accomplish at G20, the White House press secretary said, “President Biden will reaffirm the US commitment to the G20 as the premier forum of economic cooperation globally.”

She also said that Biden will “discuss a range of joint efforts to tackle global issues, from the clean energy transition and combating climate change to mitigating the economic and social impacts of Russia’s war in Ukraine, to increasing the capacity of the multilateral development banks to better fight poverty and take on the significant transnational challenges that are afflicting countries across the world.”

India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1 last year. The 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi scheduled to be held on September 9-10 will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year.

A G20 Leaders’ Declaration will be adopted at the conclusion of the G20 Summit, stating Leaders’ commitment towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the respective ministerial and working group meetings.

The Group of Twenty (G20) comprises 19 countries – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, United Kingdom and the United States and the European Union. The G20 members represent around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of the global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population. (ANI)

If Someone Sees Shivling, I Have No Objection: Delhi LG On Fountains Near Airport

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Saturday that fountains installed on the way to Delhi airport ahead of the G20 summit are art pieces made by an artisan from Rajasthan and “not Shivling” and he has no objection if someone sees ‘Shivling’ in it.

He said there should be no controversy concerning the fountains amid complaints by Aam Aadmi Party.

Vinai Kumar Saxena told ANI in an interview that India is a unique country where rivers and trees are worshipped and the focus at this time should be on giving the best experience to delegates visiting Delhi for the G20 summit.

  “Those are art pieces made by an artisan from Rajasthan, not ‘Shivling’. Ours is a unique country where rivers and trees are worshipped. If someone sees ‘shivling’ in it (‘Shivling-shaped’ fountains), then it is very good; I have no objection to it, but there should be no controversy…,” he said.

AAP MLAs Friday wrote to the Special Commissioner, Delhi Police, and complained against LG VK Saxena and other government officials for “outraging the religious sentiments of Hindus by installing 18 Shivling fountains for decoration/beautification” purposes near Palam technical area in the national capital.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh had earlier sought an apology from the Bharatiya Janata Party over the decision and alleged that the LG had “insulted” Shivling.

Appalled To See How MCD Rounds Up Strays, Puts Them In Torturous Enclosures

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi, with a misguided view to ‘sanitize’ select areas of the National Capital ahead of G20 Summit, has randomly picked up stray dogs from Pragati Maidan and T-2 Airport Terminal areas and put the voiceless animals in subhuman enclosures.

Animal lovers condemn this kneejerk reaction by the municipal body and request all concerned citizens to raise their voice against such maltreatment of the strays. The action was never shared on any public forum and on September 1, MCD personnel quietly swooped down on 47 locations to carry out the ill-advised operation.

Having gotten the wind of their intentions, the animal welfare community in fat offered its help towards the safe collection and keeping of dogs by involving local feeders in the exercise. However, the MCD took no heed of the help offered and went ahead to blatantly and illegally pick up mostly sterilised dogs.

The airport area from where dogs have never been previously picked was targeted by three teams. Some sixty harmless, sterilised and mostly very old dogs were caught and incarcerated at ill equipped centres that have neither fans nor adequate staff nor even food. Only dry kibble was provided at one centre which street dogs do not eat.

MCD’s actions raises several important questions:

1. The G20 summit is mainly centred in New Delhi zone an NDMC area so why is MCD clearing MCD areas of dogs?

2. Under the ABC Rules 23, sterilised dogs msy not be removed. The Hon SC has directed all municipal corps to strictly adhere to these rules under AWBI guidance.

3. In the absence of any written orders, is MCD staff authorised to collect any dogs from anywhere?

4. How does a short 2 day event justify the enormous cruelty and expense of such an action? Why is MCD still using wire catchers rather than nets?

5. How is MCD going to ensure the health, and safe return of so many dogs from so many different areas?

Instead of working steadily over the years to sterilise and vaccinate dogs whereby the population would have been negligible, this sham overdrive to ‘hide’ away our dogs is both unnecessary and illegal. It must be stopped.

Welcoming G20 delegates to the national capital for next month’s crucial summit, Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the city has been decorated “like a bride” on Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s instructions.

“On Arvind Kejriwal’s instructions, Delhi has been decorated like a bride for hosting G20 summit. Delhi’s roads have been kept clean and beautified. Arrangements have been made so that the tourists who are coming don’t face any issues,” Saurabh Bharadwaj said speaking to ANI.

The Delhi Minister further said that they expect the G20 delegates to sing Arvind Kejriwal’s praise and Delhi’s praise when they go back to their respective nations, enamoured by Delhi’s “beauty”.

“We want that when representatives from different countries go back to their respective nations they praise Arvind Kejriwal’s Delhi for its beauty, more so the people of Delhi for being so graceful,” Saurabh Bharadwaj said.

Earlier in the day in his latest edition of his monthly radio broadcast — ‘Mann Ki Baat’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is fully geared to host the G20 Summit, which is to be hosted in the national capital.

He added that the summit next month, which is being hosted under India’s presidency of the G20, will give the world an insight into the country’s potential and rising global heft. With world leaders and delegates from over 40 countries expected to attend the event, Prime Minister Modi said the event in India will witness the biggest participation in the history of the G20 Summit.

He said India’s G20 presidency is “people’s presidency”, with public participation being at its forefront.

“The month of September will give the world a glimpse of India’s potential. We are fully prepared to host the G20 Leaders Summit next month in Delhi. Heads of 40 countries and many global organisations will be here to participate in the event. The event this year will see the biggest participation in the history of the G20 Summit,” PM Modi said.

“Our Presidency of G20 is a people’s presidency where the spirit of public participation is at the forefront. Eleven Engagement Groups of G20 — from academia, civil society, youth, women, our parliamentarians, entrepreneurs and people associated with urban administration — combined to play a critical role in helping us host this event,” he added. Ahead Of G20 Summit, Delhi Metro Stations Defaced With Pro-Khalistan Slogans

Fuelling security concerns ahead of the G20 Summit, which is set to be hosted in the national capital next month under India’s presidency, suspected activists of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a front for the separatist Khalistan Group, defaced more than five Metro stations with pro-Khalistan slogans, an official said on Sunday.

In pictures shared by Delhi Police, slogans are seen inscribed on the walls of Metro stations, reading “Delhi Banega Khalistan” and “Khalistan Zindabad”. 

“Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) also released raw footage of Delhi Metro stations which were defaced with pro-Khalistan slogans,” an officer said.

“Suspected SFJ activists defaced multiple Metro stations in Delhi — from Shivaji Park to Punjabi Bagh — with pro-Khalistan slogans,” the officer added.

Confirming the defacement of Metro stations, they were pursuing necessary action in the matter, as per law.

The defacement of the Metro stations comes at a time when the national capital is playing host to the B20 Summit India, 2023. 

The three-day summit started on August 25 and will end on Sunday. The event has drawn over 1,500 delegates from 55 countries.

As many as 18 heads of state are expected to attend the G20 summit in the national capital next month.

Many heads of state and diplomats, including US President Joe Biden, Chinese Premier Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron are expected to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit. (ANI)

Invitations Sent To All Leaders For G20 Summit: MEA

India has sent out invitations to all G20 members, invitee countries and international organizations and is looking forward to welcoming their participation for the G20 Summit scheduled in the national capital this September.

Responding to a question on whether Russia has confirmed participation of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the G20 Summit, External Affairs Ministry official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said he cannot issue a response on any particular leader.
“At this point, all I can reiterate is what we have said earlier that invitation have gone out to all the G20 members as well as the invitee countries, the international organisations and all the invitee international organisations. This is a physical summit and we would hope that all the invitees are able to participate in person for the summit.

“There have been confirmations I understand but again I don’t have any specific response on any particular leader, yes or no, and I don’t think it would be fair to look at it that way. But, yes, we are looking forward to welcoming the leaders here for our G20 Leaders Summit, New Delhi leaders’ Summit in September,” he said.

Putin had skipped the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia in 2022 and sent his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in his place.

Earlier today, the office of South African President, Cyril Ramaphose had announced that Putin will not attend the BRICS nations summit. This will be the first summit hosted in person since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent global restrictions. The Summit will be attended by the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa.

Putin will instead deliver his speech at the summit via video conference, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian news agency TASS. Peskov also confirmed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will represent Russia at the summit in-person.

Lavrov had this March participated in the G20 Foreign Ministers meeting in Goa. India assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1.

The 18th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 9-10. The meeting will be a culmination of all the G20 processes and meetings held throughout the year among ministers, senior officials, and civil societies.

A G20 Leaders’ declaration will be adopted at the conclusion of the New Delhi Summit, stating Leaders’ commitment towards the priorities discussed and agreed upon during the respective ministerial and working group meetings, according to the official G20 statement.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said that the decision-making at multilateral organizations like the United Nations doesn’t reflect the realities of present-day politics, economics, or aspirations of the people at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (G20FMM) held here.

Highlighting the flaws in the global decision-making process at the United Nations while addressing the foreign delegates at G20FMM, he said, “Current global architecture is in its 8th decade. The number of members of the UN has quadrupled in this period. It neither reflects today’s politics, economics, demographics or aspirations. Since 2005, we have heard sentiments for reform being expressed at the highest level. But as we all know, these have not materialised. The reasons are no secret either. The longer we put it off, the more the credibility of multilateralism stands eroded. Global decision-making must be democratised if it has to have a future.”
The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting commenced with a minute’s silence observed for those who lost their lives in the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

“Before I commence proceedings, let us observe a minute of silence in memory of the many who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. Our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” said Jaishankar.

The EAM began the first session of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting by reminding foreign delegates that “this grouping bears an exceptional responsibility.”

“We first came together in the midst of a global crisis and are today, once again, actually confronting multiple ones. These include the impact of the Covid pandemic, concerns of fragile supply chains, the knock-on effects of ongoing conflicts, anxiety of debt crises and the disruption of climate events. In considering these issues, we may not all always be of one mind. In fact, there are some matters of sharp differences of opinions and views. Yet, we must find common ground and provide direction, because that is what the world expects of us,” said Jaishankar.

Speaking on the future of multilateralism, he said, “As we look ahead, there are both pressing and more systemic challenges that we all confront. The future of multilateralism depends very much on our ability to strengthen it in a changing world.”

He focussed on developing cooperation to mitigate the food crisis magnified by recent events.

“Food and energy security are immediate anxieties, magnified by recent events. But they do have long-term repercussions and solutions. And development cooperation is part of that larger solution that we are deliberating upon today,” said Jaishankar.

He also discussed the agendas for today’s discussions that included challenges of food, fertilizers and fuel security that are make-or-break issues for developing countries.

“We heard their concerns directly in January this year through the Voice of Global South Summit. Such issues should not be relegated to the periphery of the international discourse. They are infact, crucial to the global economy and must be treated as such. Indeed, we urge that they be central to any decision-making. Along with that, the world must also strive for more reliable and resilient supply chains. Recent experience has underlined the risks of being dependent on limited geographies,” said the EAM.

He said that G20 group have individually and collectively an obligation to contribute to international growth and prosperity, adding that these can be implemented through sustainable partnerships and goodwill initiatives.

“On its part, India has undertaken development projects in 78 countries and has actively encouraged exchanges and capability building. During the Covid pandemic, we made a conscious effort at contributing to global solutions even while looking after our own. Today’s situation demands that we continue to live up to our international responsibilities. The G20 must be sensitive to all our partners’ priorities and economic concerns, especially those more vulnerable. We must ensure demand-driven and sustainable development cooperation based on country ownership and transparency. Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity are essential guiding principles for such cooperation,” added Jaishankar.

He reaffirmed that G20 Foreign Ministers can send a collective message of its determination to address the complex challenges that the world face at this juncture, adding, “I look forward to our deliberations in this regard.” (ANI)

At the outset of the first Health Working Group meeting taking place in Kerala under India’s G20 Presidency, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar on Wednesday called health an integral part of G20 agenda and said that New Delhi’s chairmanship will aim to build on the efforts and proposals laid down by previous health working groups and G20 leaders.

The MoS also stated during her address that G20 countries have consistently worked to promote coordinated efforts among its members to achieve good and equitable health for all.
“During the once-in-a-century crisis of the pandemic, G20 countries consistently worked for promoting coordinated efforts among its members to achieve good & equitable health for all. Health is an integral part of G20 agenda,” MoS Pawar said during the address at the first G20 Health Working Group meeting in Kerala on Wednesday.

She added further that health became an integral part of the G20 agenda with the establishment of the health working group under the German presidency in 2017 and G20 countries that exhibited commitment to mitigating health emergencies.

Bharati Pravin Pawar also stated that India’s presidency will aim to build on previous health working groups’ and G20 leaders’ efforts and proposals, such as strengthening our healthcare systems and prioritising one health.

The first Health Working Group meeting under G20 India Presidency is held from January 18-20 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

In a significant milestone, India assumed the presidency of the G20 on December 1, 2022. India is currently part of the G20 Troika comprising Indonesia, India and Brazil, marking the first time that the troika is consisting of three developing and emerging economies.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Health Track of the G20 India Presidency will comprise four Health Working Group (HWG) Meetings and one Health Ministerial Meeting (HMM). The meetings will be held in different locations across the country including Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Goa, Hyderabad (Telangana) and Gandhinagar (Gujarat), highlighting India’s rich and diverse cultures. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting, and gave guidelines to the officials for the successful organisation of the G-20 conferences to be chaired by India in the year 2023, as per an official statement.

CM Yogi said that India has been bestowed the honor of presiding over the G-20 group of leading nations of the world under the successful leadership of the respected Prime Minister in the year of Amrit Mahotsav of Independence. This global event has brought immense possibilities for Uttar Pradesh.
“This event is a great platform to introduce ‘Brand UP’ to the world. We should make the most out of this global event,” the CM said.

He said different events are proposed to be held in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, Lucknow, Agra, and Greater Noida during the period of one year of G-20 chaired by India.

“According to the Indian spirit of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, preparations should be made to make the event grand in these districts. Everyone will have to make efforts as a team to make this event a standard of cleanliness, beauty, safety and orderliness,” CM Yogi said.

He said that arrangements should be made according to the standard of security of foreign visitors. Necessary arrangements should also be made regarding a medical emergency, traffic, etc. The guests should be introduced to the diverse food cuisines in Uttar Pradesh.

“The cities hosting the G-20 conferences should be given a grand look. Attractive lighting should be arranged at heritage sites of historical and cultural significance in the cities. Pictures depicting the state’s culture should be displayed on the walls on the tour route for the guests. India’s Yoga tradition is being adopted by the whole world today, in such a situation statues can be installed showing different postures of ‘Surya Namaskar’,” CM Yogi advised.

Emphasizing the theme he said that local culture should be made the theme of the event to be held in all four cities. For example, Awadh culture in the capital Lucknow, Braj culture in Agra, Rangotsav, and Ganga culture in Varanasi should be organized as themes, adding, “The guests should be welcomed grandly by showering flowers on their arrival in the state. Take the cooperation of local cultural groups and voluntary organizations.”

“The hosting of G-20 summits is historic. To make it unforgettable and unparalleled, a ‘G-20 Park’ should be established in the capital Lucknow. In this regard, after identifying the place, an action plan should be prepared regarding the outline of the park,” he said.

He further added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given India the name of ‘Mother of Democracy’. Uttar Pradesh has a legacy of rich history.

“Ancient art, culture, history, and archaeological specialties of the state should be compiled and presented on the platform of G-20. The prosperous economy, GDP, industrial development, etc. of the state should also be displayed. The G-20 logo should be used at every event and every correspondence of the state government,” said Yogi.

He said that this conference will be successful in its objectives only with wide public participation. A maximum number of youth should be associated with the G-20 summit.

“Special discussions should be organized on this topic in universities. Exhibition of paintings of young painters of the state should also be organized in all the four cities where the event is being held. Apart from this, book fairs, yoga challenges, craft fairs, and dance and music competitions should be organized at the school level. G-20 branding should be done on local establishments and public vehicles. The three local development authorities should also be involved in organizing the proposed events in Greater Noida,” he added.

CM Yogi said that the hosting of the G-20 is also a good opportunity for upgrading city infrastructure and beautification. The roads on the route on which the delegates have to travel should be arranged according to their needs.

“We have to pay special attention to cleanliness. In the cities where conferences are to be held, a week before the date of the program, a special campaign for cleanliness should be conducted. Efforts should be made to make these cities plastic free. Take the cooperation of public representatives and increase public participation,” the CM said.

CM Yogi said that internet connectivity will play a major role in the successful organization of the G-20 summit. High-speed internet connectivity as per global standards should be available at the venue. Alternative arrangements should also be made. (ANI)

India Has Become 5th Largest Economy In 2022: Modi In Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the last Mann Ki Baat of the year 2022 and said that this year, the country had become the world’s fifth-largest economy.

“The year 2022 was wonderful, India completed 75 years of Independence while ‘Amrit Kaal’ began. India progressed rapidly and became the world’s fifth-largest economy, and achieved the unbelievable record of 220 crore vaccines and crossed the USD 400 billion mark in exports,” PM Modi said in the 96th edition of Mann Ki Baat, a monthly radio programme of the Prime Minister.
He also talked about the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative of the government and lauded the launch of INS Vikrant.

The commissioning of India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier is a momentous occasion during the ‘Amritkaal’ of India’s 75 years of independence and signifies the country’s confidence and prowess.

This indigenous aircraft carrier is proof of the country’s technical acumen and engineering skills. This demonstration of India’s self-sufficiency to produce an aircraft carrier warship will reinforce the country’s defence indigenisation programmes and the ‘Make in India’ campaign.

INS Vikrant, built at a cost of around Rs 20,000 crore, successfully completed its fourth and final phase of sea trials last month. With the construction of ‘Vikrant’, India has joined a select group of nations having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an aircraft carrier.

The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers.

INS Vikrant has a top speed of around 28 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The aircraft carrier is 262 metres long, and 62 metres wide and it has a height of 59 metres. Its keel was laid in 2009.

Further in the address, he also underscored the country’s responsibility for chairing the G20 summit this year.

“This year, India has also got the prestigious responsibility of chairing the G20 group. I had also discussed this in detail last time,” he said.

G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation representing around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of the worldwide trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.

On December 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s agenda for the G20 will be inclusive, ambitious, and action-oriented. In his blog post, PM Modi said India will work to promote a universal sense of oneness and its priorities will be shaped not only in consultation with G20 partners but also with the Global South.

He underlined that the great challenges of today like climate change, terrorism, and pandemics, cannot be solved by fighting each other but by acting together. “India’s G20 agenda will be inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive,” he wrote.

Citing the theme – ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, PM Modi said India’s G20 Presidency will work to promote this universal sense of one-ness. “This is not just a slogan. It takes into account recent changes in human circumstances, which we have collectively failed to appreciate,” he said.

Writing for the think tank South-South Research Initiative (SSRI), Farjana Sharmin noted India finally got the opportunity to execute its global vision and grand strategy, and secondly, the South Asian region is going to get benefits through India’s leadership in G-20.

PM Modi also extended his greetings on the occasion of Christmas.

He said: “Today is the day to remember the teachings of Jesus Christ. The festival of Christmas is being celebrated with great fervour all across the world. I extend my heartful greetings to everyone.”
