Actor Kamal Haasan Joins DMK-Led Alliance in Tamil Nadu

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), the political party founded by actor-politician Kamal Haasan, has decided not to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha (LS) election and instead support the DMK, a prominent political force in Tamil Nadu.

Kamal Haasan announced his unwavering support and campaign efforts for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The DMK, however, has been offered one seat for the 2025 Rajya Sabha polls to MNM in exchange of campaigning for the party.

“Me and my party are not contesting in this election. But we will give all cooperation to this alliance. We have joined hands as this is not just for position, this is for the Nation,” said Kamal Haasan.

Actor turned politician Kamal Haasan made his political debut in 2018, by launching his own party Makkal Needhi Maiam.

His party contested in 37 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and lost. Makkal Needhi Maiam’s vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha election was 3.72%.

Haasan unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election from Coimbatore South and lost to BJP Mahila Morcha President Vanathi Srinivasan by a narrow margin of 1728 votes.

Meanwhile the DMK has almost sealed off all it alliances for the Lok Sabha Polls. The party has allotted two seats each to the Communist Party of India and CPIM, as well as one each to the Indian Union Muslim League and the Kongu Desa Makkal Katchi. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi has also been allotted two seats. It is expected that the seat sharing arrangement with the Congress will be sealed by Saturday evening.

In 2019 the DMK alliance won 38 of the 39 seats and the INDIA bloc will be hoping for a repeat performance this rime as well. (ANI)

Kamal Haasan Condoles Death Of DMDK Chief Vijayakanth

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam President Kamal Haasan extended condolences over the demise of DMDK chief and actor Vijayakanth on Thursday.

Vijayakanth passed away in Chennai aged 71 after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier in the day.

“The news of the death of my beloved brother Vijayakanth, the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam, a unique actor and captain of Tamil cinema, who was loved by all, is deeply saddening. He was the creator of innovative ideas in Tamilnadu politics,” Kamal Haasan said in a post on X.

“Fearless courage was his hallmark. Vijayakanth, a revolutionary artist who made his mark in both the fields of cinema and politics, will remain forever in our memories. I offer my heartfelt condolences to all his family, volunteers and fans who are grieving his loss,” he added in his post.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami also conveyed condolences to Vijayakanth’s bereaved kin.

“I am deeply saddened to learn that Vijayakanth, President of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam, former Leader of Opposition and dear brother passed away due to ill health. I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved Premalatha Vijayakanth, Annarath’s wife and DMDK General Secretary, her family and her volunteers,” EPS posted from his official handle on X.

“I pray that the soul of Vijayakanth, who has done many active works in public life and the field of art and is affectionately known as Captain by the people, rests in the shade of Lord Thiruvadi,” he added.

The mortal remains of Vijayakanth were taken to the DMDK office in Koyambedu from his Virugambakkam house in Chennai.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister MK Stalin paid floral tributes to Vijaykanth at his Chennai residence.

Calling the latter’s demise a tragedy for Tamil Nadu and the film industry, CM Stalin said that the news of the DMDK chief’s death brought “shock and pain”.

The Chief Minister’s Office in a statement said the DMDK chief will be laid to rest with full state honours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, and BJP state chief K Annamalai, too, condoled the demise of Vijayakanth.

Widely known as ‘Captain’, Vijayakanth’s life is marked by a successful career in the Tamil film industry.

He founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam in 2005.

Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016.

He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice, representing the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies. (ANI)

Bharat Jodo Yatra To Reach Capital On Dec 24

As the Bharat Jodo Yatra is all set to reach the National capital on December 24 the Congress Party is doing all preparations to welcome the Yatra in Delhi.

Yatra will reach Delhi from Haryana on December 24, where it will be welcomed at the Badarpur border, during which all the prominent faces of Delhi will receive.
It will start from Delhi’s Babarpur Metro station on December 24 at 6 am and will reach Ashram Chowk at 10.30 am.

There will be a lunch break at Ashram Chowk and will resume from there at 1.30 pm will go from Mathura Road to India Gate and ITO and will finally reach Red Fort.

Yatra will end at Red Fort with the address of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi and other leaders will first go to Rajghat, after that they will also go to Shanti Van, Shakti Sthal, and Veer Bhoomi.

After a break of 9 days, the yatra will resume. On January 3, the Yatra will start again from Delhi itself.

On Monday Delhi Congress meeting was held at the party office over the preparations for Bharat Jodo Yatra which sparked a row after Congress’ controversial leader Jagdish Tytler joined the forum.

Congress MP and party General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh on Monday tweeted the complete schedule of the BJY’s Delhi leg.

“Bharat Jodo Yatra will reach Delhi on the evening of 24th December. After that, there will be a break of 9 days so the containers for the harsh winter in the north can be repaired and prepared before the Yatra resumes. Also, many Bharat Yatris will return with their families after about 4 months to spend time with them. The journey will resume on January 3, 2023.”

The Bharat Jodo Yatra is in Rajasthan and has crossed 100 days.

Makkal Needhi Maiam president and veteran actor Kamal Haasan is scheduled to take part in the yatra on December 24 in Delhi.

The foot march, which began from Kanyakumari on September 7, marked its 100 days on Friday, during the 12th day of its Rajasthan leg.

Several Bollywood stars including Pooja Bhatt, Riteish Deshmukh, Swara Bhaskar, and Riya Sen have already participated in the yatra.

Rahul Gandhi aims to mobilize the party cadre and unite the general public against the alleged “divisive politics in the country” through this yatra.
