Alia Gets Shoutout From BFI Curator

After ‘Loki’ star Sophia Di Martino, Robin Baker from the British Film Institute National Archive has heaped praise on actress Alia Bhatt over her performance in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.

Taking to Instagram, Robin penned a note saying he was moved by Alia’s acting skills in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial. In his note, he also said that Alia should be nominated at the British Academy Film Awards and Oscars for her performance in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’.
“If I was a member of BAFTA or the Academy (I’m not), this year I would be voting for Alia Bhatt as Best Actress for her performance in GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI (Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India, 2022). She plays a prostitute turned underworld brothel madam turned campaigner for sex workers’ rights, and the joy of her performance is how she grows as her character develops,” he wrote.

“The film is big, brash, sentimental, and hugely enjoyable, but Bhatt is sensational. There’s the additional pleasure of the film’s classic Hindi cinema references – from Gangubai’s love of Dev Anand to scenes of cinema-going in the 50s and 60s to the numerous film posters lining the streets around Bombay’s red light district. If you haven’t seen it (especially BAFTA and Academy Award-voting friends), please head to Netflix ASAP. #aliabhatt #gangubaikathiawadi,” he added.

Robin’s received a heartfelt reaction from Alia.

Sharing Robin’s note on her Instagram Story, Alia dropped a string of white heart emojis.

Recently, Sophia of Loki fame also penned a note of appreciation for Alia.

“Woahhh. What a turn @aliabhatt is going to take over the world in about a minute and a half #GangubaiKathiawadi” Martino wrote alongside the film’s poster,” she wrote.

Alia shared a screenshot of Martino’s post and thanked her.”This means so much from someone who is about to take over a whole multiverse,” Alia wrote. In her reply to Bhatt, Martino said, “Casual Fan Girling over here.”

‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, which was released in theatres on February 25, 2022, revolves around a girl sold by a suitor into prostitution and how she becomes a prominent and celebrated figure in the underworld and Kamathipua red-light district. Sanjay Leela Bhansali helmed the film, which is one of the Bollywood projects to enter the 100-crore club in 2022. (ANI)

Irene Cara death

Oscar-Winning Flashdance Singer And Actor Irene Cara Passes Away At 63

Oscar-winning singer and actor Irene Cara, who rocketed to pop stardom singing the title tracks to ‘Fame’ and ‘Flashdance,’ passed away at the age of 63.

Her publicist, Judith A. Moose, announced the news on social media, saying that the cause of death is “currently unknown.”
“Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief,” Moose wrote in a statement, adding, “She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films.”

According to a report by US-based entertainment portal Variety, Cara first gained notoriety as Coco Hernandez as a High School of Performing Arts (now Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School) student with aspirations of becoming a famous actress.

Cara not only performed in the movie, but also sang ‘Fame,’ the film’s soundtrack. That song and ‘Out Here on My Own,’ another Cara-sung number from ‘Fame,’ would later be nominated for an Academy Award for best Oiginal Song’.

Despite director Alan Parker’s initial scepticism, they were successful because composer Michael Gore called him shortly after working with Cara in the studio to inform him that they had a vocal powerhouse on their hands.

Since Cara had performed on stage and on television since she was a young girl, many similarities between her and her character influenced her acting.

With ‘Flashdance… What a Feeling,’ a contagious song of empowerment that she co-wrote and sang, Cara would go on to score an even bigger hit.

The romantic drama from 1983 about a dancer who aspires to be a ballerina found huge commercial success.

The film won an Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’ and a Grammy award for ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The number gained fresh popularity after she re-recorded the song with DJ BoBo for 1997’s ‘The Full Monty’,

Also among Cara’s films are ‘City Heat’ with Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood; ‘Certain Fury’ with Tatum O’Neal, and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ in the 1990s.

She was married to stuntman and director Conrad Palmisano from 1986 to 1991. (ANI)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

And The Oscar Goes To… Ukraine Prez Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was taken aback upon receiving the iconic Oscar statuette from two-time Academy Award-winning Hollywood actor Sean Penn.

On his third visit to the country ravaged by an ongoing Russian invasion, Penn extended a humanitarian gesture by offering one of his two Oscar statuettes.
According to New York Post, he asked Zelenskyy to keep it with him till the war subsides with a ‘hopeful Ukrainian victory’.

Zelenskyy took to Instagram to share a video where Penn could be seen offering him his award. Zelenskyy could be seen declining the acceptance however he did say that the award will stay in the war-torn country as a symbol of faith in the victory of Ukraine.

“This is a symbolic silly thing, but I know if this is here with you, I’ll feel better and stronger for the fights,” Penn could be heard saying in the video, asking Zelenskyy to bring it back to Malibu upon winning the war against Russia. Shaking hands with Penn, Zelenskyy humbly exclaimed “It’s so great! I am honoured. We have to win” before accepting the possession of the golden figurine.

Zelenskyy returned the favour by honouring the Hollywood superstar with the ‘Order of Merit of the III degree’ for “strengthening relations, popularization and supporting the sovereignty of Ukraine”.

Prior to this, Penn had made headlines by publicly announcing that he would smelt his Oscar statuette if Zelenskyy is not sent an official invite to the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony.

He has been an active supporter of Zelenskyy’s unwavering resilience and courage. In fact, he even expressed his admiration for the Ukrainian President time and again on public platforms.

During his appearance on Anderson Cooper’s show on CNN, Penn expressed high regard for him and how he has kept the country unified through such devastating times. (ANI)
