China Allegedly Using TikTok For Disinformation In Taiwan Elections

Taiwan is gearing up for Presidential elections scheduled for January 13 next year. Lai Ching-te of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is up against Hou Yu-ih the Taipei Mayor representing the Kuomintan and Ko Wen-jie of the Taiwan People’s Party.

Even as Taiwan’s people get ready to make the choice the apprehension is that Beijing is targeting young Taiwanese in an effort to influence their vote.

According to the Taiwan based newspaper Taipei Times China is targeting young voter using the TikTok app. The report says that videos being shared on TikTok are aimed at propagating distrust in Taiwan’s government and military.

According to Taipei Times, China state backed Global Times and other pro-establishment outlets have published reports critical of the ruling DPP and its leaders in an effort to generate a negative opinion about the party.

The Taipei Times quoted sources as saying that “The Chinese Communist Party [CCP] has defined this election as a choice between ‘war and peace’ and continues to spread the threat of war through China’s state media.”

“Pro-China candidates have even echoed these threats, claiming that a vote for the DPP is a vote to send young people to the battlefield. They are cooperating with the CCP to intimidate Taiwanese,” the source added.

The aim of these video is diverting the voters’ attention toward parties that may seem favourable to closer ties with Beijing and generate a Pro-China sentiment among younger voters in Taiwan.

The source quoted by Taipei Times said that “The CCP is also attempting to convince young Taiwanese that conscription means they are sacrificing their studies, careers and futures.”

“China basically intends to use cognitive warfare to foster negative views on the policies of the ruling party among young Taiwanese, all with an eye toward affecting the outcome of the election,” the source further added.

CNN reported that at a recent closed-door security briefing Taiwan’s intelligence community warned that China had been working to influence Taiwan’s upcoming election using disinformation. The goal of this was to bolster the chances of opposition candidates who are more likely to favor improving ties with Beijing.

In Taiwan, Government employees are banned from using TikTok but there is no blanket ban on the App for citizens.

The incumbent DPP is said to be leading in all opinion polls. The Taiwan election comes at a time when Tensions between China and Taiwan are high.

On Monday Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported that PLA aircraft had entered the Taiwan space while two Chinese balloons were also detected.

“Six PLA aircraft and 2 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m. 1 of the detected aircraft (Y-8 ASW) had entered Taiwan’s SW ADIZ. Two PRC’s balloons were detected on Sunday after crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait at the location 110 nautical miles NW of Keelung and altitude of approximately 27,000 feet. The balloons headed east and disappeared at 09:36 and 16:35 respectively ” Taiwan’s Ministry of Defence said in a post on X. (ANI)

Egypt’s Prez Abdel To Run For Third Term In Dec Polls

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has announced that he would run for a third term in the next election in December, according to Al Jazeera.

El-Sisi is largely predicted to win the election at a time when the Middle Eastern country is dealing with an economic crisis, record inflation, and a dramatic depreciation of the local currency.

“I have decided to nominate myself to complete the dream during a new presidential term,” el-Sisi said, making the announcement during a televised speech on Monday evening, according to Al Jazeera.

“I call on all Egyptians to participate in this democratic scene to choose with their patriotic conscience who is worthy,” he said.

An estimated 65 million Egyptians are reported to be eligible to vote in the election, which will be held over three days from December 10 to 12. Egyptians living abroad will be able to cast their ballots on December 1-3.

A few politicians have already declared their candidatures for the presidency, but none of them offer a real threat to el-Sisi, who has been in power since 2014.

Ahmed al-Tantawi’s campaign, who is the most well-known possible challenger to el-Sisi and a former member of parliament, has stated that voters were prevented from endorsing him, according to Al Jazeera. To run for office, prospective candidates require 25,000 public signatures or the backing of 20 lawmakers in a parliament that is overwhelmingly pro-Sisi.

El-Sisi, a former army chief who has been president since 2014, had been widely expected to run again and secure a third term after constitutional amendments four years ago that would allow him to stay in office until 2030.

In recent weeks supporters have mounted a campaign using billboards and public messages urging El-Sisi to stand reported Arab News.

El-Sisi came to power after leading the ousting of Muhammad Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013. He was announced winner of presidential elections in 2014 and 2018 with 97 percent of the vote. (ANI)

Trump Federal Election Case

Trump Announces 2024 Presidential Election Bid

Former United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will seek the Republic Party nomination to contest in the 2024 presidential election.

“In order to make America great and glorious again I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” Trump said on Tuesday (local time).
“It was only the beginning to rescue the American dream,” he further added.

The announcement comes in the wake of mid-term elections held in the US.

CNN reported that Trump’s paperwork establishing his candidacy landed with the Federal Election Committee shortly before he delivered his announcement at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida waterfront estate.

Democrats have been leading in 50 seats of the US Senate while Republicans continue to take lead in 49 seats, The Washington Post reported. Democrats have been leading in 207 seats while Republicans have been leading in 217 seats in the US House.

Trump in recent months has been hinting that he would run in the presidential elections.

Talking about Republican Party, the former US President said that his party has become much bigger, much stronger, much more powerful [and] can do much more good for the country.

He also said that Russia’s war in Ukraine would “never have happened” if he was President

“Even the Democrats have admitted that,” Trump said.

For the record, no Democrats have said that Russia’s war in Ukraine would not have happened if Trump was President, Trump added.

Former US President also promised not to give Biden “four more years.” “I will ensure Joe Biden does not receive four more years,” Trump said.

“Our country can not take that. It can only take so much… We will do it again, but with even more votes this time,” he added.

Former US President has set his eyes on winning a second term in Washington as he made a statement regarding two GOP governors Ron DeSantis of Florida and Glenn Youngkin of Virginia who could challenge his status as the party’s anchor in the coming months, CNN reported.

Making a statement regarding Glenn Youngkin, Donald Trump in a post on Truth Social said, “I Endorsed him, did a very big Trump Rally for him telephonically, got MAGA to Vote for him – or he couldn’t have come close to winning.” Notably, Donald Trump lost to US President Joe Biden in the presidential elections held in 2020. He and his supporters have not acknowledged the results and are accused of voter fraud. (ANI)

Digvijaya Drops Out Of Cong Presidential Race

In yet another twist in the tale of the Congress president polls, Digvijaya Singh on Friday said he was dropping out of the race for the top post and announced his support for Mallikarjun Kharge, who is likely to be in the fray.

Today is the last day to file nominations for the polls.
Singh had said on Thursday that he would file his nominations today. However, after reports of Kharge also mulling contesting the party’s internal polls, he decided to drop out of the contest.

Singh made the announcement after he met Kharge this morning at the latter’s residence.

Speaking to reporters here, Singh said he “cannot think of contesting an election” against a senior leader like Kharge.

“Kharge is my leader and my senior. I went to his residence yesterday and asked if he is contesting. If he does, I will not fill up the form. He said he did not intend to contest. I came to know through the media that he is a candidate. I went to meet him this morning. I said if he is filing the nomination, I am with him. He is a senior and respected leader of the party and I cannot think of contesting an election against him,” he said.

“If Kharge had told me earlier, he would not have gone to collect the form. Now he intends to file his nomination, I will become his proposer,” Singh added.

He said he will not compromise on his “commitment to the Nehru-Gandhi family”.

“I have always worked for Congress all my life and will continue to do so. I do not compromise on three things. First, Dalit, tribal and poor. Second, I do not compromise with those involved in disrupting communal peace. I will not compromise on my commitment to the Nehru-Gandhi family, neither have I ever done it,” he said.

The quick turn of events is taking place on the last day of the filing of the nominations which closes at 3 pm today.

Singh is the second Congress leader to pull out of the race after Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced he would not contest the elections following the political turmoil in his state.

Sources on Friday said that no leader from Congress’s “G-23” will file a nomination for the post of Congress president.

Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said he will be the proposer for Kharge.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Congress leader KN Tripathi said he will file his nomination at 1 pm today.

“I’ll file my nomination at 1 pm today (for the Congress president post). Rahul Gandhi and party chief Sonia Gandhi have said they’re neither requesting anyone to contest nor declining anyone…we want to see what the rank and file of the party wants,” he said.

With the Gandhis not running for the top post, the grand old party is all set to get a non-Gandhi president after over 25 years.

The results of the party polls will be declared on October 19. (ANI)
