World Should Be Asked If It Wants India To Be There: Modi On UN Security Council M’ship

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who on Tuesday departed for a historic State visit to the United States said there is “unprecedented trust” between the leaders of the US and India as ties between New Delhi and Washington are “stronger and deeper” than ever, according to an interview in the Wall Street Journal.

India moves to secure what PM Modi sees as its rightful place on the world stage at a moment of geopolitical turmoil and overall, his message was that–from India’s role in global politics to its contributions to the world economy–the country’s time has come, the US publication said in the interview published today.
He sought to portray New Delhi as the natural leader of the global South, in sync with and able to give voice to developing countries’ long-neglected aspiration, according to the WSJ.

“India deserves a much higher, deeper and wider profile and a role on the world stage,” the Prime Minister said in the interview with the Wall Street Journal at his residence in New Delhi taken ahead of his first official State visit to the US.

“We do not see India as supplanting any country. We see this process as India gaining its rightful position in the world,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi called for reforms to global institutions such as the United Nations to make them more representative in a multipolar world order and of the world’s less affluent countries from the consequences of climate change to debt reduction.

When asked whether India would like to be a permanent member of the Security Council, PM Modi said there has to be an evaluation of the current membership of the council and “The world should be asked if it wants India to be there.”

He said that India’s time has come in contributing to global politics and to the world economy as well.

Relating many of the world’s problems, such as terrorism, proxy wars and expansionism, to the failure of the UN, PM Modi said that global institutions such as the UN must change.

“Look at the membership of key institutions–does it truly represent the voice of democratic values?” the PM asked, adding, “A place like Africa–does it have a voice? India has such a huge population and is a bright spot in the global economy, but is it present?”

The Prime Minister underscored India’s role as a contributor of troops for peacekeeping operations around the world.

PM Modi also said that India not only tolerates but also celebrates its diversity.

He said, “For thousands of years, India has been the land where people of all faiths and beliefs have found the freedom to coexist peacefully and prosper,” adding, “You will find people of every faith in the world living in harmony in India.”

On the economic front, PM Modi has received acclaim for eliminating bureaucracy, easing regulations, and creating more favourable conditions for foreign direct investment. India is now the most populated country in the world, surpassing China. Additionally, it has a young population, which indicates a substantial demographic dividend.

PM Modi-led government has made significant investments in infrastructure and education, and as global corporations try to diversify their supply chains in a time of geopolitical unrest, the government stands to benefit, according to the WSJ report.

Regarding this PM Modi said, “Let me be clear that we do not see India as supplanting any country. We see this process as India gaining its rightful position in the world,” adding, “The world today is more interconnected and interdependent than ever before. To create resilience, there should be more diversification in supply chains,” Wall Street Journal reported. (ANI)

World AIDS Day 2022: Celebs Who Battled HIV/AIDS

World AIDS Day is observed annually on 1 December. It is celebrated globally to encourage people to come together in the battle against HIV, to support those who are living with HIV, and to remember those who have passed away from the disease.

On this important day, let’s remember the celebrities who battled HIV/AIDS.
1. Freddie Mercury

Iconic Queen frontman Freddie Mercury lost his battle against AIDS 31 years ago today when he was just 45. He kept his AIDS diagnosis secret due to the stigma attached to the disease back in the day. He disclosed it just hours before his untimely death on November 24, 1991.

His heartbreaking statement read, “Following enormous conjecture in the press, I wish to confirm that I have tested HIV positive and have AIDS.

“I felt it correct to keep this information private in order to protect the privacy of those around me.

“However, the time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth, and I hope everyone will join with me, my doctors, and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease.”

2. Magic Johnson

At a time when people used to avoid discussions related to HIV/AIDS, NBA superstar Magic Johnson stunned everyone by announcing his HIV diagnosis three decades ago. Today, Johnson is living a healthy lifestyle and works to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS.

3. Charlie Sheen

Actor Chalie Sheen went public with his HIV diagnosis in November 2015, four years after he was first diagnosed.

In August 2022, he settled a lawsuit filed by an ex in which she claimed the actor knowingly exposed her to HIV. According to Page Six, the actor settled the lawsuit for USD 1,20,000. Page Six reports that in her initial filing in June 2017, the plaintiff, who is only referred to as Jane Doe in the court records, asserted that she had first met Sheen in September 2015 and that they had started having intercourse soon after. Initially, he is said to have worn a condom. Still, as of October 26, 2015, he allegedly switched to having unprotected intercourse with the woman, who is described in the legal documents as a “Russian emigre.” She had questioned whether he had any STDs before the skin-to-skin contact and he had said, “‘I’m good,'” she said.

But after the act, he allegedly admitted to her that he was HIV positive, which he had known since 2011, and provided her medicines to prevent getting the virus.

4. Billy Porter

In 2021, actor Billy Porter revealed that he has been living with HIV for 14 years and decided to make the revelation now as he hopes to free himself from “that shame in silence”. In fact, the 51-year-old actor made history by winning an Emmy in 2019 for his role as Pray Tell, a character who is HIV-positive, on the acclaimed FX series Pose.

“The truth is the healing. And I hope this frees me. I hope this frees me so that I can experience the real, unadulterated joy I can experience the peace I can experience intimacy so can sex without shame. This is for me,” Billy told The Hollywood Reporter.

5. Greg Louganis

Olympic diver Greg Louganis found out he was HIV positive six months before the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He faced several challenges as he was accused of putting other divers at risk of HIV. (ANI)

For me personally, 7 years later, all these is just a short summary of all the promises Mr. Obama failed to deliver to America’s doorstep. All the great plans that could have made him a truly Reforming President, were not completed and so the 44th President of US will most likely remain an “intermediate” part of American history. That is confirmed by President himself, as he now constantly compares himself (unfavorably) to truly great US leaders, like Lincoln or Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

And I have to agree with him. And the funniest thing is probably that Obama still managed to accomplish pretty big steps during his Presidency. Such as the “Affordable Care Act” (Obamacare), or achieving some kind of ease of US image overseas (which, though, made us look weak now, instead of strong and intimidating before). Anyways, the way those great Presidents Obama mentions himself has changed the country is a great comparison. Like FDR, who was able to overcome the complete weakness of US federal government over private banks and financial sector in general, when dealing with the Great Depression. Or Lincoln, who held the bipartisan country together with a grip of a mountain grizzly bear.

Remember the Republican response to Obama’s speech that day? One of the most famous ones was Bobby Jindal’s reaction. He just buoyed the stimulus plan that was just approved by the Congress. Even tried to mock it up, while objecting to spending “140 million US dollars for something vaguely called Volcano Monitoring…”.
The irony is that next month after his words, the Alaskan volcano erupted (just as Obama’s intentions did) and covered the state for days with thick, 60000-foot ash and smoke cloud…

As CNN reporter once said then, regarding GOP response to these wonderful, though unfulfilled ideas of Obama:
“To come up at this moment in history with a stale, government-is-the-problem, we can’t trust the federal government—it’s just a disaster for the Republican Party.…in a moment when only the federal government is big enough to actually do stuff—to just ignore all that, and just say ‘government is a problem, corruption, earmarks, wasteful spending,’ it’s just a form of nihilism. It’s just not where the country is. It’s not where the future of the country is.”
