Swati Maliwal Bibhav Kumar

Bibhav Sent To 14-Day Judicial Custody In Maliwal Assault Case

Delhi’s Tis Hazari court on Friday remanded Chief Minister’s aide Bibhav Kumar for 14-day judicial custody in connection with the alleged assault on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal.

Kumar was produced before the court after the three-day police custody granted on May 28 ended on Friday. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 18, in connection with the case.

Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal remanded Bibhav Kumar in judicial custody. He will be produced before the court on June 14.

Delhi Police had sought a 14-day judicial custody of Bibhav Kumar after interrogation. Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) submitted that the judicial custody of the accused is required for proper investigation, to prevent the accused from tampering with evidence, and to prevent him from making inducement or threats to any witness.

Defence counsels Rajat Bhardwaj and Karan Sharma opposed the judicial custody plea. They submitted that the accused is in no position to interfere with an investigation or tampering with the evidence. It was also stated, “I (Bibhav Kumar) am in no position to induce the witnesses.”

On May 28, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Atul Srivastava submitted that the accused formatted his mobile phone and refused to share the password. It was also submitted that police have received an interim report from a forensic expert on CCTV footage. The accused is seen entering the area where the DVR was there. He remained there for 20 minutes. There are chances of tampering with the evidence, APP argued.

APP also submitted that the complainant stated that the accused videographed the incident. He was seen with two mobile phones.

Defence counsel Rajiv Mohan opposed and submitted that the alleged incident took place on May 13, there was no complaint for three days, No MLC, FIR was lodged on May 16, accused was arrested on 18, defence counsel argued.

He also argued that the evidence is being created by defence counsel. Police want custody of the accused till the time he gives a statement that suits their requirements. It is admitted case that the footage of the place of occurrence is not available, Defence counsel submitted.

In this case, no weapon has been used, the accused’s counsel submitted. Data of mobile can be retrieved, defence counsel argued. Why an accused would create evidence against him so that police can use it, defence counsel added.

The accused cannot be compelled to share the password, the accused’s counsel argued. FIR is very simple but Prosecution is reading between the lines, Defence counsel argued. There is no evidence on record that the mobile was formatted. The fact of formatting of the phone is not admissible without any report of the forensic report, the defence counsel submitted.

The accused can be examined scientifically, there is no requirement of custody, defence counsel Rajiv Mohan argued. There should be a compelling ground to seek further custody. There is no material with the police to confront the accused with, the defence counsel submitted

APP has opposed the submissions of the defence and said that police have recieved an interim report from a forensic expert regarding the blank portion of the footage. There is a chance of tampering. The accused was using two mobiles, where the second mobile, APP submitted.

Defence counsel argued that this aspect has not been investigated as to why the complainant went to the CM house. Further, he argued that it is not a murder case where custody is required to recover the weapon. There is no evidence to show that the injuries mentioned in the MLC have been caused by the accused, the defence counsel submitted. MLC is of three days after the incident, defence counsel submitted. AAP BJP

BJP Workers Stage Protest Against AAP Over Water Crisis In Delhi

The Bhartiya Janata party workers on Friday staged a massive protest against Aam Aadmi party over water crisis in the national capital, stating that the MLAs of AAP are involved with Tanker mafias in Delhi.

The demonstration march was conducted by the BJP from Shahidi Park to the Delhi secretariat.

As the Aam Aadmi Party approached the Supreme Court regarding the water crisis in Delhi, the BJP leaders argued that the AAP was profiting from selling water and accused them of exploiting the residents of the capital city.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva while protesting against the AAP said, “The water crisis in Delhi is a result of mismanagement of the Aam Aadmi Party. With statistics, I can prove that Delhi is receiving water from Haryana. They are imposing a fine of Rs 2000, it’s not a fine but another way of doing corruption. Their water gets wasted because they cannot keep it safely. They are just lifting the Tanker mafias in Delhi. Wrong entries of tankers will be added to the list. There is no shortage of water in Delhi, they just don’t have intentions to provide water”.

“Every MLA of Arvind Kejriwal is involved in selling water along with Tanker mafias. The water which should be provided for free to the people of Delhi that is being sold,” he added.

BJP leader & candidate from New Delhi constituency Bansuri Swaraj also hit out at the AAP government for the water shortage in Delhi and accused the party of propagating tanker mafias by creating an “artificial water crisis”.

“AAP government has created an artificial water crisis. Delhi Jal Board made a profit of Rs. 600 crores in 2013. Currently, it is in the loss of Rs. 73,000 crores. Arvind Kejriwal’s government should be held accountable. It is the same government which promised free water,” Swaraj said while speaking to ANI.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking additional water supply from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh for one month.

The petition states, ‘The need for water in Delhi has increased significantly due to the severe heatwave. It is everyone’s responsibility to fulfil the needs of the capital city”.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged the BJP to keep politics aside as the capital faces an imminent water crisis.

Kejriwal on Friday made an appeal to the centre and the BJP to urge the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to help Delhi meet its water demand.

“I see that BJP colleagues are protesting against us. This will not solve the problem. I request everyone with folded hands that instead of doing politics at this time, let us come together and provide relief to the people of Delhi. If the BJP talks to its governments in Haryana and UP and gets some water for Delhi for a month, then the people of Delhi will greatly appreciate this step of the BJP. Such scorching heat is not in anyone’s control. But if we all work together, can we provide relief to the people from this?” Kejriwal wrote in a post on X. (ANI)

Spare A Thought For Stray Animals Amid This Heatwave

‘Spare A Thought For Stray Animals In This Heatwave’

Jyoti Mishra, the co-founder of NGO Shiv Ananta Foundation, says brutal summer can be lethal for community animals and calls for public action for their welfare. Her views:

As an NGO worker dedicated to the welfare of stray animals, I am deeply concerned about the severe impact of scorching heat and growing concrete infrastructure on the vulnerable creatures. Each year, as temperatures soar, the plight of stray dogs, cows, and other community animals worsens, often leading to untimely deaths and unbearable living conditions. The relentless heatwave, coupled with urbanization, poses a significant threat to their survival, and it is imperative that we take collective action to mitigate these challenges.

The brutal summer heat can be lethal for stray animals. Unlike humans, these animals do not have the luxury of seeking refuge in air-conditioned spaces or accessing a constant supply of clean water. Stray dogs, for instance, suffer from heatstroke, dehydration, and burned paws due to the scalding concrete roads. Cows, which are often left to wander the streets, face similar fates. Their thick coats and inability to sweat efficiently make them particularly susceptible to heat stress, leading to severe health issues and, in many cases, death.

Concrete roads exacerbate these problems significantly. During the peak summer months, these surfaces can become unbearably hot, often reaching temperatures that cause severe burns. This not only affects the physical well-being of the animals but also restricts their movement, making it difficult for them to find food, water, and shelter. The lack of shaded areas and green spaces in urban settings further compounds their misery, leaving them with little respite from the oppressive heat.

ALSO READ: ‘Pollution is Causing Breathing Issues In Animals Too’

NGOs like ours play a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of these animals. Our primary focus is on providing immediate relief and long-term solutions. During heatwaves, we set up water stations across the city, ensuring that stray animals have access to fresh, clean water. These stations are strategically placed in areas with high stray populations and are regularly monitored and refilled by our volunteers.

Additionally, we organize community awareness campaigns to educate the public about the importance of helping stray animals. Simple acts, such as leaving out bowls of water, providing temporary shelters made from discarded materials, or even just offering a shaded spot, can make a tremendous difference. Public participation is crucial, as a collective effort can significantly amplify the impact of our initiatives.

Our efforts also extend to rescuing animals in distress. During particularly harsh weather, our rescue teams are on high alert, responding to calls about animals suffering from heatstroke or injuries caused by hot surfaces. These animals are brought to our shelters, where they receive medical care, nourishment, and a safe place to recover. We work closely with veterinarians to ensure that they are treated promptly and effectively.

Moreover, we advocate for the creation of more green spaces within urban areas. Parks, tree-lined streets, and community gardens not only enhance the environment but also provide much-needed relief to stray animals. We collaborate with local governments and urban planners to push for animal-friendly infrastructure that considers the well-being of all living beings within the city.

The challenges faced by stray animals during extreme heat are immense, but with continued effort and compassion, we can make a difference. NGOs, volunteers, and compassionate citizens must work together to create a safer, more humane environment for these animals. By addressing both immediate needs and long-term solutions, we can help ensure that stray animals are not left to suffer and that they receive the care and protection they deserve.
