US Tells Citizens To Leave Kabul Airport ‘Immediately’

After the Kabul airport blast, the US Embassy in Kabul on Thursday (local time) warned its citizens to stay away from the Kabul airport and told anyone outside the perimeter to “leave immediately,” citing unnamed security threats.

The US Embassy cited three areas of particular concern in its advisory. “US citizens who are at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate now should leave immediately,” the statement said, without further detail, reported The New York Times.
A senior US official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity about confidential assessments, confirmed that the United States was tracking a “specific” and “credible” threat at the airport from the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, which has carried out dozens of attacks in recent years, many targeting ethnic minorities and other civilians.

The warnings came as the last of the estimated 1,500 Americans and countless other foreigners still in Afghanistan try to make it to the airport to leave before the Taliban deadline of August 31, reported The New York Times.

The US government has been warning about potential security threats at the airport, and access to the airport has been adjusted accordingly, with some gates temporarily closed.

Earlier, the British and Australian governments issued similar warnings, with Australian officials describing “an ongoing and very high threat of terrorist attack.”

Marise Payne, Australia’s Foreign Minister, said at a news conference Thursday that the Taliban will allow Australian citizens and visa holders to leave safely but added, “Our travel advice remains: You should not come to Hamid Karzai airport because it is not safe to do so, and if you are in Kabul, you should shelter in place, move to a safe location and await further advice.”

Thousands of Afghan nationals are camped outside the perimeter of the airport in desperate attempts to escape on the last flights out after the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban. (ANI)

US Targets ISIS-K Planner In Nangarhar After Kabul Attack

An ISIS-Khorasan planner was killed in a “counterterrorism” operation conducted by US military forces in the Nangahar province, a day after a terror attack in Kabul killed scores of people including 13 US troops.

In a statement spokesperson, for US Central Command said US forces conducted the “over-the-horizon” operation on Friday targeting the ISIS-K planner and the initial indication was that they “killed the target”.
“US military forces conducted an over the horizon counterterrorism operation today against an ISIS-K planner the unmanned airstrike occurred in the Nangahat province of Afghanistan. The initial indication is that we killed the target,” Navy Capt. Bill Urban said.

“We know of no civilian casualties,” the statement read.

On Thursday, a suicide bomber and multiple ISIS-K gunmen killed 13 U.S. service members and at least 169 Afghan civilians in the attack at the Kabul airport.

ISKP on Thursday claimed responsibility for the blast.

US President on Thursday vowed to retaliate for a terrorists attack, saying, “We will not forgive. We will not forget. We will hunt you down and make you pay”. (ANI)

Weekly Update: Adani Busts Modi’s Claims On Farm Laws; Justice Chandrachud’s Sermon

Prophetically, PM Modiji assured farmers that they had nothing to worry as selling in the open market would fetch higher prices for them than the meagre MSP. Modiji has undergone quite a metamorphosis in his premiership, changing from a savvy fashion icon with multi-lakh suits to a simple Yogi. Perhaps in his new incarnation in office he might have developed talents of a ‘seer’. But even the best Yogis get it wrong at times. This time pesky Adani has done exactly opposite of what Modiji predicted.

In Himachal, farmers decided to give the new deal a chance. Apple growers went to Adani Agrifresh Ltd to sell their stock. Adanis and Ambanis were going to be the new saviours of farmers, able in theory to give them twice the price of those state run Mandis and MSPs.

As it turned out, Adani offered them some ₹12 to ₹72 for a Kg of apples depending on their ‘happy’ colour, meaning quality and how red they were. Quick calculations on their fingers showed farmers that after calculating travel costs, input costs etc, they were in fact subsidising the apple free market. Usually it is the Government that subsidises farmers.

Several turned to the good old state run Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs). Not surprisingly they were offered more, between ₹90 to ₹125 per Kg. Even the so called illiterate farmer, as Modi Government had suggested farmers don’t understand economics, worked out that ₹90 offered by APMC for the lowest quality apple is much higher than ₹72 offered by the capitalist Adani for the best quality Apples. It became a bit of no brainer for farmers to work out where to sell their apples, the state sector or the free market.

To rub salt into Modiji’s wounds, Adani’s apples sell for ₹250 per Kg after a bit of shiny plastic or other packing. A hefty 300% profit. It doesn’t seem after this, the farmers protest is going to go away in a hurry as nice old Adani has just proven them right. He just proved their fear that the freemarket will drive down the prices instead of enriching farmers. Perhaps, Modiji’s Yogi stage of life will come handy somewhere else.

Justice Chandrachud Foils Own Truth To Power Sermon

Justice Chandrachud is becoming a bit of a star celebrity among the liberal minded Indians. He has been making the right sounds, giving the impression that he is willing to uphold the law against any Government trying to do a bit of ‘bendy mendy’ with the Constitution. Perhaps he wants to make a name in the historical hallways of Supreme Court to stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Bhagwati and Iyer. However after unravelling his latest speech, it is obvious that there is a bit of a way to go before joining legends like Iyer and Bhagwati.

Justice Chandrachud has boldly advised his fellow countrymen, ‘to speak truth to power’. “Democracy and truth go hand in hand. Democracy needs truth to survive,” Chandrachud spoke with conviction.

He suggested that speaking out has been a privilege of upper castes so far and told all citizens of India to enjoy the freedom to express their opinion. Suggesting “women, Dalits and members of other marginalised communities have an important role to play in this context”, he said. “Since they did not enjoy the freedom to express their opinion, their thoughts were confined, crippled and caged. After abolition of the British Raj, the truth became the belief and opinion of upper-caste men.”

Perhaps he was subtly alluding to the Government when he said at the virtual event totalitarian governments are associated with a “constant reliance on falsehoods” and it is the duty of citizens to strengthen public institutions and expose the “lies of the State”.

Great words, one might say. But when the common man hears of journalists being slapped with ‘sedition’ charges after saying something unflattering about Modiji or the Bhakts and others speaking their version of truths such as Government has failed the people during the pandemic being thrown into jails, the esteemed Judge’s rally cry sounds a bit hollow. Where is the rickshaw-wallah going to get courage to ‘speak truth to power’ is a mystery which Justice Chandrachud might also want to solve.

Of course His Lordship can introduce suo moto cases in the SC and order dropping of all charges against those who ‘spoke truth to power’. But that hasn’t happened so far,

However, he gave an example, where a ‘clever’ citizen might sense the fear even in their Lordships rhetorical posturing. The Justice started, “It can’t be said that State will not indulge in falsehood for political reasons even in democracies”. An original statement of discovery if ever.

Now he is an Indian Judge extoling his average non elitist fellow citizens to “speak truth to power”. For empathy in the statement, one would think that he would have picked an example in Indian post 1947 history that most could relate to, such as the fabricated reasons on the 1984 attack on Golden Temple, the statements of Congress leaders after 1984 Delhi massacres, or the report after Gujrat riots or numerous other examples of explanations given by Indian politicians after riots, massacres, corruption scandals and a lot more that everyone knew were creative tales. These events are close to home and examples that the citizens can relate with. They are examples that citizens could feel should not have happened.

Their Lordship said this instead, “The role of US in the Vietnam War did not see the daylight until the Pentagon papers were published. In context of Covid, we see that there is an increasing trend of countries across the world trying to manipulate data. Hence, one cannot only rely on the state to determine the truth.”

How many Indians know of the ‘Pentagon’ papers in far off land, the USA! Or was the Justice playing it safe while firing his fellow citizens to stand up to politicians?

The Vietnam example is a bit naff. The politicians responsible for that war are dead and long gone. So no problem in ‘exposing the lies of Vietnam’ and still being invited to top legal tables in America. Even if he wanted to avoid the wrath of his own government and deflect away from home, he could have had cited the CIA report on Russian meddling in American elections when Trump was helped but Trump and Senate denied. Now that would have been the Justice standing by what he is preaching. Otherwise ‘speaking truth to power’ is just another fad and fashionable comment these days and Indians cannot be seen to be left out of what is trending around the world.

But if citizens did take his message to heart and start ‘speaking truth to power’, there will be millions of sedition or related charges. Politicians and lies are synonymous in the mind of most Indians. Currently it takes a few decades to get a hearing at the courts. Then it might take centuries if people take his advice.

Flush With New Weaponry, Taliban To Host More Jihadis

After getting hold of the United States’ sophisticated weapons following its so-called victory in Afghanistan, the Taliban are most likely to host more Jihadis.

Taliban has captured Afghanistan after 20 years as US President Joe Biden announced the ending of the US military mission at the end of August.

Dnyanesh Kamat from Asia Times said that with a massive inventory of American and NATO weaponry, the Taliban has become the world’s most lethal terrorist group.

He said that the Taliban’s rise to power is a grave threat to Afghanistan’s immediate neighbourhood and beyond. As per some estimates, at least 230 million dollars worth of American inventory alone now is in their hands including weapons, ammunition, vehicles, drones and planes.

A further 19 million dollars worth of equipment allocated to the Afghan police now is in Taliban hands, Dnyanesh Kamat wrote in Asia Times.

According to Kamat, videos circulating on social media have shown the Taliban posing in front of American Black Hawk helicopters and Brazilian-made AN-29 ground attack planes. Apart from this, the former government also had Russian-designed Mi-17 helicopters.

It seems that at least for the more advanced weaponry, such as planes, the Taliban lack the technical know-how in terms of operation or maintenance. Yet this does not preclude the fact that ideologically aligned foreign jihadis possessing such capabilities may offer their services. Or that the Taliban may sell some of the excess inventory to jihadi outfits on the international black market.

This will fuel terrorism in the region and beyond in much the same way that Libya’s civil war fueled Islamist terrorism in the Sahel.

The Taliban gain of Afghanistan made jihadi’s cyberspace erupt in celebration. Terrorist groups like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Syria spoke of the Taliban’s victory as an example worth emulating.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula praised the Taliban for “emancipating” Afghanistan. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has already sworn allegiance to its Afghan counterpart.

As per reports, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in Kabul. Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s leader since 2011, is said to be living in Afghanistan under Taliban protection.

Zawahiri pledged allegiance to Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s leader, in 2016. Curiously, the pledge of allegiance was not the other way around – Akhundzada pledging allegiance to the al-Qaeda chief.

The Taliban and al-Qaeda are today not just joined by ideology but also by matrimonial links. In addition, there are 10,000 foreign terrorists in Afghanistan from various countries, including those allied with ISIS, according to Dnyanesh Kamat from Asia Times.

On Thursday, multiple blasts occurred outside Hamid Karzai International Airport, US President Joe Biden said the United States has reason to believe the leaders of the Islamic State-Khorasan terror group are behind the attacks.

Biden said the Islamic State-Khorasan has planned complex attacks against US forces and others in Afghanistan after they were released from prisons during the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. (ANI)

Crypto Investment Surges In Afghanistan Amid Crisis

Crypto investment and mainly the Bitcoin adoptions have shot up in Afghanistan over the last year amid economic turmoil brought about by the Taliban, according to a report.

The South Asian Democratic Forum (SADF) said that it’s interesting to stress that ‘Bitcoin adoption in Afghanistan has shot up over the last year amid economic turmoil brought by the Taliban’s takeover of the country’.

With the fall of the government in Afghanistan people started turning towards the crypto market as they faced financial difficulties.

In an attempt to save their assets Afghans started investing in the crypto market. Surely, the Taliban will notice the growing investment in the crypto market in Afghanistan, Siegfried O. Wolf said writing for SADF.

Faced with the country’s uncertain financial situation, the rising crypto economy provides an opportunity for people to gain financial interest but there’s also a threat of growing misuse of it. The misuse of the crypto market might push Afghanistan to become a launchpad for illegal (terror) activities in the digital space beyond terror financing purposes like cyber-attacks or online radicalisation campaigns, SADF added.

As China has vowed to have good relations with the Taliban — and the terror group’s all-weather ally Pakistan — is a matter of additional concern as there are possibilities of technology transfer in future.

In June 2021, the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Week recognised that the pandemic enhanced opportunities for terrorist groups particularly to raise funds through online sources.

Siegfried O. Wolf further wrote that experts during the week expressed concerns that terrorists might ‘seek more secretive mechanisms for financing their activities. Numerous actors involved in the set-up of the anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism provisions identify digital space’s complex payment method as a serious threat scenario. Bhupesh Baghel Meets Rahul, Says State Govt Safe

Claiming that his government is “safe” in Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said Rahul Gandhi has “gladly” accepted his invitation to visit the state and inspect various projects undertaken by his government.

Baghel met with Rahul Gandhi, for the second time this week. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was also present at today’s meet up. This came amid reports of a power tussle in the ruling Congress in Chattisgarh with political rival and minister in his government TS Singh Deo reportedly seeking the CM’s post citing a power-sharing agreement after the party came to power in the 2018 assembly elections.

Addressing media persons after meeting with the Gandhis, Bhaghel said, “I told him everything. There were political as well state administrative discussions. In the end, I requested Rahul Gandhi to visit Chhattisgarh. He gladly accepted the invitation, he will be there next week.”

The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister informed that Rahul Gandhi will first visit Bastar and inspect the various projects and works there.

When asked about the 2.5 years formula regarding the rotational chief ministership in the state, Baghael said, “PL Punia has already clarified this, I don’t need to say anything further. I have told my leader whatever I wanted to.”

Baghel had brought about 50 Congress MLAs to Delhi in a show of strength. Prior to his meeting with the Gandhis, Baghel had asserted, “The Congress government in Chhattisgarh is safe with the three-fourth majority, we have 70 MLAs.”

Later in the day, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister also met Congress MLAs from his state who had gathered at the party’s headquarters in Delhi. The Congress MLAs met with Chhattisgarh Congress in-charge PL Punia at the latter’s residence late last night.

Meanwhile, Singh Deo who is also in Delhi had also met with Rahul Gandhi on Thursday. When asked by reporters at Chhattisgarh Sadan in the national capital, whether he would also be meeting with the party leadership again today, the state health minister said he has “not been given any time.” Both Baghel and Singh Deo had met AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Wednesday.

On Thursday Singh Deo had told ANI in Delhi: “If a person plays in a team then doesn’t he think about becoming the captain? Won’t you want to become one?”

“Everyone thinks about that but the question is not about his thoughts, it’s about his capabilities. The High Command takes a decision,” the Chhattisgarh minister said.

Singh Deo also dismissed false reports about any existing pre-agreement on the sharing of the Chief Ministerial berth.

After the Baghel government completed two-and-a-half years in office in June the supporters of TS Singh Deo raised the issue of rotational chief ministership. Though Congress never talked about the two-and-a-half-year formula in Chhattisgarh, the supporters of Deo claim that this was promised.

Congress won the assembly polls held in December 2018 with a thumping majority. Then, the state Congress president Bhupesh Baghel was made the chief minister. TS Singh Deo was the head of the manifesto committee in the election. Supporters of both Baghel and TS have claimed that the party’s victory was due to their leaders. (ANI)

Afghans Arriving In India Will Get Six-Month Visa: MEA

India on Friday said that Afghan nationals arriving in the country will get a six-month visa and the government will “take it from there” as making long term plans have not been the “best of ideas” under the current circumstance.

This comes as the Union Home Ministry announced that all Afghan nationals must travel to India only using e-Visa given the current security situation in Afghanistan.

“So they (Afghans) are currently coming here under the six-month visa regime. We will take it from there. That’s the current plan for six months. This is an evolving situation. Making long term plans have not been the best of ideas,” said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi during a weekly press briefing.

India has evacuated over 550 people on six separate flights, either from Kabul or Dushanbe. “Of these, over 260 were Indians.”

“We were moving to the e-Emergency visa system. It appears that all this could have led to some confusion, which led to the unfortunate incident of denial of entry to a particular Afghan national,” Bagchi said.

He said that decision was made in view of the security situation deteriorated in Afghanistan. “There were reports of a group of people who raided one of our outsourcing agencies where Afghan passports with Indian visas were there.”

Over 11,000 visas issued by the Indian embassy in Afghanistan between August 12 and 14 have been cancelled after over 1,000 visas were reportedly stolen, prompting the Centre to introduce e-Visas after the fall of Kabul.

A senior official on Thursday had said that the intelligence agencies anticipated that the stolen visas could be misused amid chaos in the neighbouring country.

Afghanistan’s situation is worsening as people are in rush to leave the nation after the Taliban seized control last week. On August 15, the country’s government fell soon after President Ashraf Ghani left the nation. On Thursday, twin blasts were reported near Kabul airport, which led to the death of over 60 people. Delhi Schools To Reopen In Phases From Sept 1

dia], August 27 (ANI): The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Friday has decided to reopen schools in a phased manner in the national capital from September 1 for classes 9 to 12, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Physical classes for students of class 6 to class 8 will also begin from September 8.
The decision was taken aat a meeting of the DDMA held today to discuss the matter and take a final call on reopening of educational institutes after the second wave of COVID-19 created a havoc.

The meeting was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Health Minsiter Satyendar Jain, NITI Aayog member (health) Dr VK Paul, All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) Director Dr Randeep Guleria, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Professor Balram Bhargava, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, and other senior officials.

After the first wave of COVID-19 hit the country in March last year, schools had reopened for classes 9 to 11 in Delhi on February 5, 2021, but they were again shut on April 9 after COVID-19 cases rose in the second wave of the pandemic.

Students Won’t Be Forced, Nor Marked Absent: Sisodia

With Delhi government announcing a phased opening of schools and colleges, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Friday said that no student will be forced to come to schools and that consent of parents will be mandatory for children to return to schools and if they don’t allow, students won’t be forced or considered absent.

Addressing a press conference here on Sisodia, who is also the education minister said this after a meeting today held by Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), which allowed schools to reopen from September 1 in a phased manner.
“Social distancing should be strictly followed and no student will be forced to come to the school. Consent of parents will be essential for students to come. If parents do not permit, then students will not be forced to come, they will not be considered absent either,” said Sisodia.

He further informed that a “blended mode” will be followed in which online and offline classes will be held so that those who are at home do not miss out on their studies.

Moreover, colleges, universities and coaching institutes along with schools in the national capital can also be reopened from September 1, he informed.

“It has been decided to resume schools, colleges, coaching activities in Delhi with all precautions, in a phased manner. From September 1, classes 9 – 12 in all government and private schools, their coaching classes as well as all colleges/universities will be permitted to resume,” said Sisodia.

He further said that the situation will be reviewed taking into account how the educational institutes are following COVID-19 protocols and only then a decision will be made regarding the reopening of the rest of the classes.

“About 70 per cent people said that schools should be reopened,” he said when asked about people’s feedback that he had invited earlier on July 28 for a decision on reopening educational institutions in the national capital.

“In the last one month, special drives were conducted to vaccinate teachers. Nearly 98 per cent teachers and other staff of government schools in Delhi have taken at least first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Even private schools have reported that the number of their vaccinated staff is high,” he noted.

Taking to Twitter, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who also attended today’s DDMA meeting said, “Amidst the decreasing cases of COVID-19, schools are being gradually opened in Delhi with full precaution so that the loss of children’s education can be reduced. We also have to bring life back on track and take care of both the health and education of the children.”

Earlier on August 9, Delhi government had partially opened schools for classes 10 and 12 to visit their schools for admission related work including counselling/guidance and practical activities related to board exams.

After the first wave of COVID-19 hit the country in March last year, schools had reopened for classes 9 to 11 in Delhi on February 5, 2021, but they were again shut on April 9 after COVID-19 cases rose in the second wave of the pandemic.

Delhi on Thursday recorded 45 new COVID-19 cases, 21 recoveries and zero deaths in a span of 24 hours. The positivity rate in the metropolitan was reported to be 0.06 per cent. According to the media bulletin issued on Thursday, Dekhi has 413 active cases of COVID-19. The cumulative number of cases stood at 14,37,595 of which 14,12,081 patients have been recovered from the disease. The death toll is at 25,080. (ANI)
