Hyderabad Dished Out Many Marvels Beyond Biryani

If old records can help re-look present-day controversies, here is one. In 1980, India’s then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi witnessed the first ‘demo’ of an “electronic voting instrument” along with opposition party leaders. She operated it first as a voter and then as the presiding officer. She “tallied the results with the notes she took for over 40 minutes.” All wanted to ensure that nobody was ‘fooled’.

Made in response to the ‘challenge’ thrown in 1977 by Chief Election Commissioner S L Shakdher was this forerunner of the present-day electronic voting machine (EVM), the result of a painstaking effort by the public sector Electronic Corporation of India Limited. The ECIL was called “the national champion of electronics” by the scientific community in those times, a new book says.

Everyone present was keen to end electoral malpractices rampant in that era like “booth capturing” and frequent acrimonies over the counting process. After over four decades, however, the EVM is viewed with suspicion, especially by those who lose an election.

The voting machine is among the numerous success stories of India post-independence and the pushing of science and technology frontiers, of research laboratories, colleges and universities. An emerging nation was denied access to the latest technology and components for “political reasons,” Dr Dinesh C. Sharma, veteran science journalist and author, says. Albeit slow, it was backed by the few visionaries among the erstwhile princes, Jawaharlal Nehru who spent on knowledge-hungry men like C V Raman, Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai and many more.

Sharma focuses on one of the world’s most remarkable modern-day evolutions in Hyderabad, the city and the erstwhile state. Ironically, it had briefly opposed joining the Indian Union.  The first to be created for the Telugu-speaking people, Andhra Pradesh underwent further changes – more than any other Indian state (province) when economic disparities caused the separation of Telangana. This did not stop the journey of science and enterprise, though. The present-day change to the technology hub, from a feudal polity helmed by the Nizams, then assessed as the world’s richest, who spent their riches liberally to promote knowledge is itself a story worth telling.

Sharma tells his story spanning over four centuries under a delectably misleading title, Beyond Biryani. Used to great effect is the stereotype about the “City of Nawabs” and the “enticing aroma of the rice-and-meat dish”. Hyderabadi Biryani has crossed frontiers globally and was rated India’s most-ordered dish on online food delivery platforms last year.

The science writer switches from the Biryani discourse with “The Making of a Globalised Hyderabad”, but not before linking the two:  “The pan-India popularity of Hyderabadi biryani is intertwined with the economic liberalisation and globalisation of the Indian economy.” For, the city of “Char Minar and Biryani”, gathering some of the best talent and enterprise during Nizam’s rule, has become a cosmopolitan city and is the hub of numerous science and institutions, both in the public and private sectors.

Long before that happened, Sharma records, numerous exciting but less-known narratives had placed Hyderabad under the global gaze. Chloroform became the doctor’s ultimate medium for anaesthesia before surgery after being tested in a Hyderabad lab. Ronald Ross, a Briton, found his vaccine against malaria while working in Hyderabad.

All this did not grow overnight. Hyderabad was responding to demands, like the locally grown Mahua flower becoming the source of cheaper industrial alcohol. The forward-looking Nizams were allies of the British and benefitted by making and providing much that went into the two World Wars. Post-independence, the large state gelled well with New Delhi, both ruled by the same Congress party.  The location on the relatively safe eastern flank of the peninsula, “north of South India and south of North India,” remains its USP from the security angle.

Sharma recounts how India met challenges during the 1962 Sino-Indian conflict and again, with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. India became acutely conscious of the need for self-reliance in electronics. Nehru appointed a committee under Bhabha, with Sarabhai on it to make “a blueprint for planning an indigenous industry for electronics, computers, communications and components based on R&D, design, training and limited foreign inputs.”

india was able to surmount the West-imposed restrictions after each conflict. From 1960-1980s, many units of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) units dealing with missiles and other defence-related technology were located in and around Hyderabad, where training and industrial infrastructure existed. The departure of the multinational IBM provided yet another challenge-cum-opportunity.

At the turn of the century, Hyderabad triggered the “Telugu boom” pushing its people across the world. In the United States alone, their presence has grown from 320,000 in 2016 to 1.23 million this year. Telugu is the third-most spoken Indian language.

Sharma says: “From missiles and satellites to affordable HIV drugs and Covid-19 vaccines, Hyderabad delivers everything that today’s India is known for. These successes are a result of a long journey of building key institutions over the decades.”

Nara Chandrababu Naidu ‘happened’ to Hyderabad when much of India was in political turmoil and in the throes of economic reforms. He was the only chief minister at the turn of the century who understood high-tech and talked through PowerPoint presentations (PPP). To make this point, Sharma quotes Bihar’s Lalu Prasad who wondered what “IT-wayti” was all about. That Naidu was an ally of the central government helped immensely in reaching out to Indian and foreign entrepreneurs and technocrats. He is back in that position today, although heading a truncated Andhra Pradesh. This places him in a position of advantage.

Sharma records Naidu’s audacious efforts to get Microsoft chief Bill Gates to Hyderabad when he unveiled plans that build Cyerabad. He was sure other investors would follow, and they did. So did US President Bill Clinton.

Naidu is ambitious and wants to cover the distance with Bengaluru which has been ahead, and he may well achieve that. Taking the larger picture, Sharma says, the two cities have succeeded because they have the right ecosystem that is tech-friendly and conducive to enterprise where high-end technological innovations can be pursued. They have left behind socially and politically sensitive Ahmedabad and Vadodara and a congested Mumbai-Pune belt.

The book’s blurb sums it all up: “Every time you key in a word to search on Google, launch a Microsoft product on your laptop or mobile phone, click on Amazon to buy a product, post a picture on Facebook, book an airline ticket on a travel website, use a map to navigate through the city traffic, take a taxi ride using Uber or Ola, make a financial transaction on an app, or through a leading bank, scan a QR code to make a micropayment through UPI, watch an animation film on your favourite OTT platform, pop a pill or vaccinate your child, you are most likely either using a technology developed partly or fully in Hyderabad, getting connected with a data centre, or a business processing office located there or using a medical product manufactured there.”

SRK Reveals He Started Drinking After ‘Devdas’

Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Devdas’ is one of the masterpieces created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It’s been 22 years since it came out and to date, it is remembered by the cinephiles for actors’ performances, music and of course the grand sets.

Recently, his interview from the 77th Locarno Film Festival was released and in that conversation, we can see Shah Rukh sharing anecdotes from the time when he shot for ‘Devdas’. He revealed that he resorted to method acting for the role as he turned to alcohol while playing the character. However, it worked against him as well.

“Well, I got the Best Actor award. It might have helped, but I started drinking after the film and that’s one downside to it,” SRK said.

He even talked about how he approached the character not as a tragic loser but as a man with his own reasons for not committing to love.

“I didn’t want you to feel love for him, but I didn’t want you to hate him. Nor did I want you to like him for being an alcoholic who runs away from every girl that he falls in love with. I just wanted him to appear indescribable,” SRK added.

He also shared that he accepted the titular role in Devdas despite receiving advice against it from many veterans, because he believed his mother would have liked it.

“For some reason, I always felt if I make films which are very big, my mom and dad could see them from heaven. It’s a childish thought, but I still think my mom’s a star. I even know the star she is,” he said.

SRK as Devdas, Aishwarya as Paro, and Madhuri as Chandramukhi, the trio gave a flawless performance which tugged at the heartstrings of audiences. Apart from the lead actors, Kirron Kher, Jackie Shroff, Smita Jaykar, and Jaya Bhattacharya all did a commendable job in the movie. (ANI)

India Reiterates Stand Amid Attacks On UNIFIL Premises In Lebanon

India reiterated its call for the safety of United Nations peacekeepers, amid escalating conflict in southern Lebanon with multiple attacks being reported on UNIFIL premises in Lebanon.

The Ministry of External Affairs referred to India’s statement on the development in southern Lebanon and said that New Delhi takes the safety of the UN peacekeepers “very seriously.”

It also confirmed that there are no Indian troops stationed at the Blue Line, but stressed the imortance of safety of the troops deployed.

“We had issued a statement on this development in southern Lebanon and we have said that we take the safety of peacekeepers very seriously. We have called for all action to be taken to maintain the safety of the UNIFIL premises,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a press conference on Thursday.

“There were some reports of the peacekeepers getting skin rashes; they have issues with a statement on this. We didn’t have any of our Indian troops there but continued to call for the safety of the troops,” he added.

Last week, India expressed concern at the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line, which has separated Lebanon and Israel since the 1970s, and said the inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all.

This came after two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured on October 11 when Israeli tank fire hit a UNIFIL observation tower in Naqoura, Lebanon. The Israeli Defense Forces acknowledged operating in the area, noting Hezbollah’s presence near UN positions.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that appropriate measures must be taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mandate.

“We are concerned at the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line. We continue to monitor the situation closely,” MEA said, commenting on the recent developments in southern Lebanon.

“Inviolability of UN premises must be respected by all, and appropriate measures taken to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers and the sanctity of their mandate,” the statement added.

Earlier, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu alleged that the refusal to evacuate UNIFIL soldiers has effectively turned them into hostages of Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terrorist group operating in Lebanon.

Netanyahu also urged United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to withdraw UN peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon, citing the danger posed to both ‘UNIFIL soldiers and Israeli troops’.

Earlier on Wednesday, UNIFIL said that its peacekeepers in position near Kafer Kela observed an IDF Merkava tank firing at their watchtower which destroyed two cameras and damaged the tower.

“Yet again we see direct and apparently deliberate fire on a UNIFIL position,” the mission said in a statement.

“We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times,” it added.

UNIFIL was created by the Security Council in March 1978 following Israel’s “invasion” of Lebanon.

The UN peacekeeping mission UNIFIL has been operating along the “Blue Line” which separates Lebanon and Israel since the 1970s, and its mandate was renewed in August for another year by the UN Security Council. (ANI)

Govt Doing Encounters To Cover Up Their Failures: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav criticised the Uttar Pradesh government over the Bahraich encounter, accusing it of using encounters to mask its failures.

“This incident was an administrative failure. The government is resorting to encounters to cover up its shortcomings. If encounters were truly improving law and order in the state, Uttar Pradesh would be far ahead of other states,” the SP chief stated.

Questioning the state’s law and order situation, Akhilesh remarked, “If permission was granted for the procession, why wasn’t it conducted peacefully? If they can’t manage a small event, how can we expect them to ensure law and order across the state?”

He further accused the state government of “orchestrating” the incident and claimed it was following a divide-and-rule policy.

“What happened was unfortunate, and such incidents should not recur. We will stand by the families of the victims and ensure they receive justice. The government is working on a divide-and-rule policy. This incident was not accidental; it was planned,” Akhilesh added.

The remarks come after the accused in the Bahraich incident, Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib, were shot in the leg by Uttar Pradesh Police while allegedly attempting to flee to Nepal.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar said on Thursday that two of the five individuals arrested in connection with the Bahraich violence were injured during the encounter, while three others were taken into custody. He also noted that the situation is now under control.

“When the police were escorting the five arrested suspects for weapon recovery near the India-Nepal border, two of them attempted to flee. As they tried to escape, shots were fired, and Mohammed Sarfaraz and Mohammed Talib were injured. Abdul Hameed, Fahim, and Abdul Afzal were also arrested. In total, five suspects were apprehended, and the situation is under control,” DGP Kumar said.

He added that further details would be provided by Bahraich police.

The Congress party also criticised the Uttar Pradesh government, attributing the violence in Bahraich to the failure of both the state administration and government.

UP Congress President Ajay Rai remarked, “The government has been conducting fake encounters for a long time. This is just another attempt to cover up their failures.”

SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, explained that the police acted in self-defence, leading to the injuries of the two suspects.

“When the police team went to the Nanpara area to recover the murder weapon, Mohammed Sarfaraz alias Rinku and Mohammed Talib alias Sablu had the weapon in a loaded state, which they used to fire at the police. In self-defence, the police retaliated, injuring the two. They are currently receiving treatment. The other three accused have also been arrested, and all five are in custody. Strict action will be taken, and a search is underway for the remaining suspects,” she added.

Ramgopal Mishra was killed, and several others were injured, after clashes between two communities erupted during the Durga idol immersion procession in the Mahasi area of Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday. (ANI)

United States Commission on International Religious Freedom's (USCIRF) report on religious freedom in India

MEA Slams Trudeau For ‘Inaction’ Against Anti-India Elements

Highlighting the inaction of the Canadian government against anti-India elements, the Ministry of External Affairs said there exists a gap between the words and action of PM Justin Trudeau, while he claims of supporting ‘One India’ policy.

The diplomatic row between India and Canda underwent a fresh escalation when Canada labelled India’s High Commissioner and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the investigation of Nijjar’s death.

Following this, India decided to call back its High Commissioner and five other diplomats from Canada.

“So we have seen those comments of Prime Minister Trudeau that he believes in one India policy. But so far, the actions that we have requested against anti-India elements who actually go against one India, who call for dismemberment and disunity of the country, who spouse separatist ideology. No action has been taken,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in weekly briefing on Thursday.

“So you know in a sense there is a difference. There is a gap between action and words here,” he added.

“We have seen comments of PM Trudeau that he believes in One India policy, but so far the actions we have requested against anti-India elements, no action has been taken. There is a gap between actions and words here,” the MEA spokesperson further said.

Regarding the diplomatic fallout, the MEA stated that India had summoned Canada’s acting High Commissioner and conveyed concerns about the safety of Indian diplomats.

“We had summoned the acting High Commissioner of Canada and thereafter conveyed that we had no faith that the Canadian govt will look after the safety of our diplomats and therefore we had taken a decision to withdraw our High Commissioner and along with him 5 other diplomats, after that, there was a communication from Canadian side asking them to leave but we had withdrawn our diplomats before their decision,” Jaiswal said.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, admitted that his government had not provided India with any hard evidence but just intelligence regarding the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

Testifying at Canada’s foreign interference inquiry, Trudeau said India has been insisting on evidence over allegations levelled by Canada.

“Behind the scenes (were trying) India to co-operate with us. Their ask was…give us the evidence you have on us. Our response was it is within your security agency. You should be looking into how much they know, you should be engaging… ‘No, no but show us the evidence’. At that point, it was primarily intelligence, not hard evidentiary proof. So we said let’s work together…,” he said.

Meanwhile, responding to Trudeau’s statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said that Justin Trudeau “only confirms” what India has been saying “consistently all along.”

“The MEA also held Trudeau’s “cavalier behaviour” responsible for damaging India-Canada relations.

“What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying consistently all along – Canada has presented us no evidence whatsoever in support of the serious allegations that it has chosen to level against India and Indian diplomats,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.

“The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone,” he added.

The ties between India and Canada soured after Trudeau alleged in the Canadian Parliament last year that he has “credible allegations” of India’s hand in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

India has denied all the allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated” and has accused Canada of giving space to extremist and anti-India elements in their country.

Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency in 2020, was shot and killed outside a Gurdwara in Surrey in June last year. (ANI)

Netanyahu Confirms Death Of Hamas Chief

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday confirmed that Hamas chief and one of the masterminds behind the horrific October 7 attacks last year, Yahya Sinwar, is dead, the Times of Israel reported.

The Prime Minister also instructed his aides to inform the families of Israeli hostages about the death of the Hamas chief.

Earlier today, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that three terrorists have been eliminated during its operations in Gaza, among whom was Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who has now been confirmed dead.

IDF shared a post on X and wrote, “During IDF operations in Gaza, 3 terrorists were eliminated. The IDF and ISA are checking the possibility that one of the terrorists was Yahya Sinwar.”

This development comes weeks after Israel eliminated another high-profile leader, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, through airstrikes in Lebanon.

Earlier, another senior Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh, died in Iran. Though Tehran and Hamas have accused Israel of the attack, Israel has neither accepted nor denied the charge.

Recently, the IDF eliminated several high-ranking Hamas officials, including Rawhi Mushtaha, Head of the Hamas government in Gaza, and Sameh al-Siraj, who held the security portfolio in Hamas’ political bureau.

On Tuesday, the IDF said some 20 Hamas operatives were killed in airstrikes and close-quarters combat in Jabaliya over the past day, the Times of Israel reported.

Troops also located and destroyed a weapons depot and other weapons amid the fighting, according to the military.

“The operation will continue as long as necessary, while systematically striking and thoroughly destroying the terror infrastructure in the area,” the military said.

On Monday, the IDF called on Palestinians in northern Gaza’s Beit Hanoun, Jabaliya, and Beit Lahiya to evacuate to the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone in the Strip’s south, as per the Times of Israel.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the IDF and Shin Bet security agency said that three Hamas terrorists who participated in the October 7 onslaught were killed in airstrikes in recent days. (ANI)

Neena On Working In Malayalam Series ‘1000 Babies’

Veteran actor Neena Gupta will be seen in a Malayalam series ‘1000 Babies’.

Sharing her experience working down South, Neena told ANI, “In the South, I have acted in Telugu and Malayalam languages. ‘1000 Babies’ is my third project in Malayalam. There’s a big difference (between Hindi and South Indian cinemas). I think people (down South) are more disciplined. They come to sets on time…Also, people there don’t work in shifts…they don’t even crib about it. They all work together.”

Actor Rahman agreed with Neena Gupta and added, “Everybody is treated equally. We don’t differentiate…Of course, we do have our caravans, but otherwise on the set, even if it’s the food, everybody has the same food. I prefer it also that way.”
