Himachal On Alert, 20 Dead Due To Heavy Rain In Six Days

The Himachal Pradesh government has put the entire state on alert amid a rain warning. Naresh Chauhan, the Principal Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, said that all the Deputy Commissioners have been put on alert and are prepared to deal with the rain disaster.

So far during the past six days, a loss of Rs. 219.54 crore has been estimated and 20 people have lost their lives. Nearly 30 roads are closed, 88 water supply schemes are hampered and 11 water supply schemes are disrupted in the state.
Since June 24, after the arrival of the monsoon, five houses, 21 cow sheds and two shops were fully damaged, 30 houses were partially damaged, and 352 cattle also died due to floods.

“During the past few days, due to heavy rainfall, 20 people have lost their lives, most of these are road accidents and six cases out of this are drowning. Almost all roads are open, apart from a few rural areas. Those who want to come to Himachal Pradesh are welcome here as everything is open in the state,” said Naresh Chauhan, Principal Media advisor to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhwinder Sukhu.

“There are chances of the flash flood only on rivulets and river banks; an advisory has been issued in this regard. We are well prepared in some parts of the state. Water and electricity supply is hampered and is also being restored. The Chief Minister has directed all the districts to be on alert for the entire monsoon season,” he added.

On Thursday, Shimla Police said that it will deploy guards on the banks of the rivers in the district to prevent drowning cases in the region.

The move came amid a surge in drowning cases due to the ongoing monsoon season and heavy rainfall in the region.

In this regard, Superintendent of Police Shimla District Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said that along with River Guards near the rivers, signage would be placed which will mention not to go near the banks of the river. (ANI)

Himachal To Receive More Rain For Next 5 Days: IMD

There is a possibility of rains for the next five days in Himachal Pradesh, some places may receive heavy rains, said India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

“There is a possibility of rain for the next 5 days. Heavy rain alert continues at some places of the state,” said Sandeep Kumar Sharma, IMD scientist, Shimla.
Sandeep Kumar Sharma said that more than average rainfall is likely in the state in June this year.

“An orange alert has been issued today and a yellow one for tomorrow. More than average rainfall likely in June,” the IMD scientist said.

The Meteorological Centre in Shimla on Tuesday predicted light rainfall with thunderstorms in different parts of the state.

According to the weather department, different areas of Kangra, Chamba, Bilaspur, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, and Solan districts are expected to get light-intensity rainfall with thunderstorms in the next 2-3 hours.

Earlier in the day, heavy rain triggered a flash flood in Himachal Pradesh that blocked Tandi-Killar State Highway-26 in Dared Nala, officials said on Tuesday.

Monsoon hit Himachal Pradesh on June 24 and till now, 9 people have lost their lives, said officials.

Himachal: Tandi-Killar State Highway-26 Blocked Amid Flash Flood

Heavy rain has triggered a flash flood in Himachal Pradesh that blocked Tandi-Killar State Highway-26 in Dared Nala, officials said on Tuesday.

“Today, on 27/06/2023 at 07:50 am, according to the information received from the District Disaster Management Authority Lahaul-Spiti, Pangi-Killar Highway (SH-26) has been blocked due to a flash flood in Dared Nala,” SDRF of Himachal Pradesh tweeted.
According to the Public Works Department minister, over 300 roads have been blocked in the state due to the incessant rain.

Earlier, on Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the next 24 hours in the state.

“Under the leadership of our Chief Minister, we are well prepared for any eventuality, during the past two or three days there has been a rain alert in the state. 301 roads are closed in the state. This rain has caused a 27 crore rupees loss in the state. The restoration is underway, 180 roads will be opened by today evening and tomorrow on the 27th we shall restore 15 roads. And during the next two days, more 106 roads will be cleared. We shall start a contact number as a hipline by today evening. We have also identified nearly 350 landslide-vulnerable spots and preventive majors are being displayed, we shall ensure that people do not go. there. Yesterday one of our workers died on the spot, people will also have to be responsible. We have also deployed 390 machineries to restore the roads. We shall ensure that all roads are restored,” said Vikramaditya Singh, Minister of Public Works Department.

The Public Works Department Minister stated that the restoration is being done on a war footing. He said the state government has identified over 350 vulnerable hot spots in the state which are landslide prone.

“There has been rain across the state for the past 48 hours, during the past 24 hours some places in the state have received heavy to heavy rainfall. The district of Mandi has received the highest rainfall in the state. Sirmaur and Shimla have also received rain. As far as rain intensity is concerned, Sarkaghat received 134 MM rainfall, Baldwara received 92 MM and Sundernagar also received rainfall in the state. This rain will continue and in Sirmaur, Solan and Shimla, it is raining and it is moving towards Hamirpur and Kangra. During the next 4 to 5 days, the rain will continue in the state”, said Vikramaditya Singh, Minister of Public Works Department.

Earlier, on Sunday, the weather department predicted that rain will continue in the state for the next 4-5 days. The landslide and flash flood alert has been issued by the IMD in the region. The visibility conditions are also expected to be very low during the next week in the state.

“Heavy rainfall, thunderstorm & lightning are likely at isolated places over plains, and low and mid hills on June 25 & 26. Flash floods are likely to occur in the districts of Kangra, Mandi and Solan; Traffic congestion, poor visibility and disruption in electric supply”, said the weather department.

In addition to this, in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, one-way traffic was restored on the Chandigarh-Manali highway, on Monday, according to Deputy Commissioner, Arindam Choudhary.

On Sunday, in view of the rain, the Mandi-Kullu highway was blocked.

As the monsoon hit several parts of the country, heavy rains lashed many parts of Uttarakhand also.

District Magistrate of Rudraprayag, Mayur Dixit, spoke to ANI about the ongoing Kedarnath Yatra amid pouring rains in the state.

“The pilgrims who were stopped at Sonprayag have been sent to Kedarnath after the weather cleared in Kedarghati. At present, the Kedarnath Yatra is going on with caution”, said Dixit.

The DM added that a decision regarding the yatra will be taken on the alert of the weather department.

Additionally, amid the waterflood occurring in the state, several parts of the capital, Haridwar, were also reported waterlogged, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department, on Sunday, said that the Southwest Monsoon is active and has covered the whole of Maharashtra. The monsoon will move forward in the next two days covering the other parts as well. (ANI)

Several Vehicles Washed Away In Himachal’s Flash Flood Mandi

Incessant rains in the last 24 hours, have caused extensive damage in several parts of Mandi district. At the same time, roads have been shut in many areas. Several vehicles were washed away due to flash flood in a rivulet at Janjehli in Mandi district.

Many houses located downstream are facing risk and incidents of landslides have been reported at many places across the district.
The water level in the Beas River flowing through Mandi has increased due to overnight rains in the hilly areas.

Heavy damage has been reported due to rain in the Panchayat “Manthla” of Sadar Vidhansabha in Mandi district. The community hall of Manthala Panchayat and a natural water source have been severely hit due to flash floods owing to torrential rains at night. The rooms of the community hall were filled with debris and stones.

Sadar MLA Anil Sharma reached the spot to meet the affected and took stock of the situation. The MLA has given instructions to the Jal Shakti Department including the Administration and PWD for relief and road restoration.

In the last 24 hours, Mandi has received 64.4 mm of rainfall.

Other parts of the states have also reported damages due to heavy rain. Several vehicles were washed away in Kullu district. Eight vehicles were washed in Maohal rivulet near Kullu town.

The District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) Chamba informed that an incident of Road Accident occurred at Place Khadamukh on Khadamukh-Holi Road. Due to this incident, one car fell NHPC-II dam. The number of people who were travelling is not confirmed. Search and rescue operation is going by Police Team Bharmour.

DEOC Solan informed an incident of Cloud Burst occurred at Mahaal Mangal Kathpol sub-division Arki. 30-35 goats were washed away due to this incident. A search and rescue operation is going on. (ANI)

HP’s Kangra Tea Gets European GI Tag

Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Tea on Wednesday got a European Union Geographical Indication Tag (GI tag).

“India#Kangra #Tea gets EU #GI tag. EU & #India both lay strong emphasis on GI, attaching high importance to local food, maintaining local traditions and preserving and promoting rich cultural heritage.#EUIndiaEkSaath,” tweeted the EU official organization, EU in India.
The tag will help Kangra tea to get an opportunity to enter the European market. Kangra tea received the Indian GI tag in 2005. Since 1999, the cultivation and development of tea have improved constantly in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh.

“Today we registered a new Geographical Indication from India! EU-India. #Kangra tea is grown 900-1,400 meters above sea level, on the slopes of the Dhauladhar mountain range in the Western Himalayas. It has a nutty, woody aroma and a sweet aftertaste,” tweeted EU Agriculture.

The development and cultivation of Kangra tea are being promoted and looked after by four departments Tea Board of India Regional office Palampur, cooperative and agriculture departments of the state and CSIR, IHBT Palampur and Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Agriculture University, Palampur.

‘Kangra tea’ is a type of tea derived from the leaves, buds and tender stems of the Camellia sinensis species as cultivated in the Kangra valley (Himachal Pradesh, India).

‘Kangra tea’ leaves’ main characteristics are: a multi-stemmed frame, and narrow leaves. ‘Kangra tea’ is planted from seed stock raised in the Kangra valley and other selected varieties for the region.

‘Kangra tea’ has distinctive nutty, winter-green, woody floral aromas in its flavour profile. The ‘Kangra tea’ imparts a sweet aftertaste. ‘Kangra tea’ has a light colour and high body in liquor.

‘Kangra tea’ leaves contain up to 13 per cent catechins and up to 3 per cent caffeine and amino acids such as theanine, glutamine, and tryptophan.

The teas produced in the Kangra Valley are green, oolong, white and orthodox black types.

‘Kangra tea’ is produced in several areas located on the slopes of the Dhauladhar mountain ranges of the Western Himalayas. These areas are Palampur, Baijnath, Kangra, and Dharmshala in the district of Kangra; Jogindernagar in the district of Mandi, and Bhatiyat in the district of Chamba.

The Kangra area, as defined in this application, enjoys the very specific geographical conditions prevailing in the snow-clad Dhauladhar mountain ranges in the Himalayas. Altitude is one very specific feature of the area as all the tea plantations are set within the altitude range of 900 to 1400 m in the mountain ranges.

The Kangra area also yearly receives high amounts of rainfall. The city of Dharmshala and its surrounding areas are indeed recorded to be the second highest rain-receiving areas after Mawsynram of Meghalaya state in India. The average rainfall at Dharmshala ranges between 270-350 cm per year.

HP: Sukhu Govt Plans To Reduce Working Hrs Of Dr.’s

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday said that the state government is coming up with medical reforms. He said that to destress the doctors and paramedical staff there is a need to lessen the working hours in the state.

The Chief Minister was addressing the doctors and media in Shimla after the inauguration of the OPD block and trauma Centre of IGMC Indira Gandhi Medical College built at a cost of over Rs 135 crore.
“We want to bring major medical reforms in the state; we are planning to start Robotic Surgery and use of technology and 5G services. There is a need to destress the doctors and paramedical staff. We have decided and we want to strengthen the department of Emergency medicine and staff will be increased. To destress the work of the doctors and paramedics we have decided that there will be deployment of one nurse for 6 beds and One doctors for beds of 10 patients, In intensive Care Unit Emergency at IGMC there will be 110 nurses and 20 doctors of professor rank, 34 Senior Medical resident and 75 paramedical staff will be deployed,” said Sukhu.

He said the new technologies will be adopted in medical science, like robotic and other advanced systems of medical.

“We will have to adopt new and changing technologies. We shall be taking the benefit of New medical technology, there is a need for medical reforms , we are doing the medical reforms we will adopt Robotic and other advanced systems of the medical. We have come for transformation not to use the power,” said Sukhu.

He said that the state government has five flagship programmes and that would be reflected in the upcoming Budget of the state.

“We have five flagship programmes and we want to increase tourism, health, hydro, education, green hydrogen. We are heading towards generating resources. Only 9 per cent is being spent on development, the rest is spent on debt, salary and other expenditures. We will have to face these challenges and will bring transformation,” said the Chief Minister.

The Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh Dhani Ram Shandil said that the state government has started the welfare schemes for the people of the state. He said that the state government and health department will set up a centre of excellence in each Assembly Constituency for health services in the state. (ANI)

Bridge Collapses In Himachal’s Chamba, Traffic Halted

Traffic on Chamba-Bharmour National Highway came to a grinding halt after a bridge collapsed following a landslide incident in Himachal’s Chamba district on Sunday morning, officials said.

According to State Emergency Operation Centre officials, the incident took place at Loona area of Bharmour village in the outskirts of Chamba district.
“An incident of Landslide occurred at Loona Bharmour District Chamba. In the Incident bridge has been totally collapsed and (NH-154 A) Chamba to Bharmour has been totally snapped,” Chamba district emergency operation centre (DEOC) officials said in a statement.

However, no casualty has been reported, DEOC officials added.

According to Chamba Deputy Commissioner D C Rana, it was a 20 meters long bridge on the national highway 154-A that connects Bharmour sub division (tribal area) with Chamba.

“Road connectivity to the entire area has been disrupted after the incident,” Rana said.

Further details into the matter are awaited.

Earlier on Friday evening, two vehicles were damaged after Choli Bridge in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh collapsed.

“An incident of bridge collapse occurred at Choli Bridge near Holi District Chamba at around 7.30 pm. In this incident, the bridge collapsed completely and due to this two vehicles – a car and a tipper truck fell down,” DEOC officials had said. (ANI)

The swearing-in ceremony of the new members of the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet will take place on Sunday morning.

The ceremony will be held at the Raj Bhawan in Shimla this morning, said sources.
Earlier on Saturday, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that a list of 10 people has been submitted to the party’s high command and the Himachal Pradesh Government will be implementing the Old Pension Scheme in the state soon after the first cabinet meeting.

In the November 12 Assembly elections manifesto, Congress had promised to implement the Old Pension Scheme, if voted to power.

The CM arrived in Shimla from Delhi, on Saturday evening, after meeting the party’s high command.

“The meetings were personal. The Cabinet expansion is also my prerogative and I handed over the list of ten MLAs to the high command. As soon as the approval comes through, we will roll the ball to expand the Cabinet,” the CM said, speaking to reporters.

Sukhu had further informed me that he would visit Mumbai on Sunday.

“I am going to Mumbai tomorrow and have another scheduled event in Pune. We hope to get the high command’s nod for the Cabinet expansion soon. As soon as I receive the approved list of candidates, I will effect the Cabinet expansion. We are in the government to change the system, not for power,” Sukhu said. (ANI)

IMD: Cold Wave Over Northwest India After 24 Hours

Indian Meteorological Department has predicted abatement in cold waves and cold day conditions over northwest India after 24 hours.

It also predicted dense to very dense fog conditions over many parts of Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh during the next 24 hours and there will be a decrease in intensity and distribution after that.
IMD said in a release on Friday that due to the approaching of two Western disturbances in quick succession, minimum temperatures are likely to rise gradually by 3 to 5 degree Celsius over many parts of northwest India during the next three days, and no significant change during subsequent three days.

“As a result, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions in isolated pockets are very likely over Rajasthan and cold wave conditions in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

It predicted a fall by two to four degree Celsius in minimum temperatures over Bihar during the next two days and no significant change during the subsequent three days.

“No significant change in minimum temperatures very likely over Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and rise by two to four degree Celsius during subsequent three days,” it said.

Referring to weather during the past 24 hours, the release said that the minimum temperatures were in the range of -1.5 degree Celsius in many parts of the plains of northwest India and in isolated pockets over adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh. The lowest minimum temperature of 0 degrees Celsius was observed in Bikaner Rajasthan.

“Dense to very dense fog observed in most parts of Punjab, Haryana, in some parts of West Uttar Pradesh, in isolated pockets of east Uttar Pradesh and sub-Himalyan West Bengal,” the release said.

It said dense fog was observed in some areas of east Madhya Pradesh, in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, West Madhya Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, and Tripura today morning.

“Cold day to severe cold day conditions prevailed in many parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, west Madhya Pradesh, in some parts of east Rajasthan, isolated pockets of west Rajasthan, Bihar and cold day conditions in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand,” the release said.

IMD said cold wave to severe cold wave conditions prevailed in many parts of east Madhya Pradesh, in some areas of east Rajasthan, isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and west Rajasthan, and cold wave conditions were observed in many parts of west Madhya Pradesh, and isolated pockets over Punjab and west Uttar Pradesh.
