Delhi LG: Chhath Puja Only At Designated Ghats

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Wednesday approved Chhath Puja at designated ghats on the Yamuna and asked chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to ensure clean ghats and water for devotees.

The LG also cautioned Arvind Kejriwal against “misleading and pre-mature publicity.”
The Lieutenant Governor’s directives came in a reply to Kejriwal’s tweet in which he said that Puja could be held anywhere on the Yamuna.

The LG said the Chief Minister’s statement was creating confusion among people.

“The proposal to hold Chhath Puja approved by the LG was specific to designated Ghats – Kejriwal tweeted as if Puja could be held anywhere on the Yamuna, creating confusion amongst people,” the LG’s secretariat office said.

LG Saxena also directed the Revenue and Environment departments to ensure strict enforcement of the National Green Tribunal’s orders with regard to pollution in Yamuna.

On October 21 Delhi Revenue Minister Kailash Gahlot told ANI that “Keeping in view the religious and spiritual beliefs and sentiments of lakhs of people from UP and Bihar living in Delhi, CM Kejriwal has approved my proposal to allow the celebration of Chatth Puja at different Ghats along the Yamuna River.”

He further said that the government is geared to provide facilities to the devotees at around 1,100 Ghats.

“Delhi Government has always facilitated the occasion by providing various facilities in the form of construction of Ghats, ensuring cleanliness around the places where offerings are to be made by the devotees, etc. This year too, the administration is all geared up to provide the facilities to the devotees at around 1,100 Ghats,” the minister had said.

During the Chhath festival that will be celebrated between October 28-31 this year, people worship the Sun God.

Chhath Puja is one of the most auspicious festivals in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The four-day-long festival starts with the ‘Nahai Khai’ ritual and ends with ‘Usha Arghya’ (prayers to the rising sun).

The festival is dedicated to Surya Bhagwaan (Sun God), which people believe sustains life on Earth. (ANI)

SGPC Asks For Ban On Ram Rahim’s Activities

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Harjinder Singh Dhami has termed the activities of convicted Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh as “anti-social” and demanded the Centre and state government stop them immediately.

Dhami’s demands came as a reaction to the recently made announcement of the “opening of a Dera” in Punjab’s Sunam. Dhami said, “Ram Rahim’s character is anti-social and the charges leveled against him are heinous.”

Ram Rahim, the main accused in sacrilege cases, has been serving a jail term after being convicted in rape and murder cases and was released from Sunaria jail on 40-day parole on Saturday.

The SGPC president has called Ram Rahim a “controversial person” and alleged that the announcement to open Dera in Punjab has hurt the sentiments of Sikhs.

“The announcement by this controversial person to open a Dera in Punjab has hurt the Sikh sentiments and this may spoil the peaceful atmosphere of Punjab, SGPC president Dhami said adding that the Punjab government should play its role responsibly in this “very serious” matter and resolve that no branch of Dera Sirsa is established in Punjab.”

He further said that the Sikh mentality is being hurt by repeatedly granting parole to Ram Rahim, who was imprisoned due to his bad character and crimes and it is a “conspiracy” to announce the opening of his Dera in Sunam.

“The Sikh community will never tolerate this act of his. The government should not allow the convict of heinous acts to play with the religious sentiments of the people,” he added.

While underscoring that any activity of Ram Rahim will not be accepted in Punjab, Dhami demanded the Centre and the state government stop Ram Rahim’s online speeches while he is out on parole and facing serious charges.

Ram Rahim on Wednesday organized a virtual ‘Satsang’ which was attended by many political leaders including the Karnal Mayor and many Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, sparking a fresh controversy.

The Dera chief’s family had submitted an application to the jail authorities seeking month-long parole for him.

However, the opposition had demanded a justification from the Bharatiya Janata Party over its leaders’ participation in the Satsang and Karnal mayor Renu Bala Gupta, deputy mayor Naveen Kumar and senior deputy mayor Rajesh Aggi continuously tried to defend their participation in the event.

The senior Deputy Mayor said, “I was invited to the Satsang by the ‘Sadh Sangat. Online Satsang was done from UP. Many people in my ward are associated with Baba. We attended the program with a social connection and it has nothing to do with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the upcoming by-poll.”

Notably, the opposition also alleged that Ram Rahim was granted parole due to the forthcoming by-polls in Adhampur that are slated to be held on November 3. Besides, the state is also scheduled to hold panchayat polls soon.

Ram Rahim was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in August 2017 for raping two women followers.

While, on October 8, 2021, the court convicted Ram Rahim and four others in connection with former Dera manager Ranjit Singh’s murder case.

Ranjit Singh was murdered in 2002 on the premises of Dera Sacha Sauda.

CBI had registered the case on the orders passed by the High Court of Punjab and Haryana in the year 2003 and taken over the investigation of the case earlier registered at Police Station Sadar in Kurukshetra.

It was alleged that Ranjit Singh was murdered on July 10, 2002, while he was working in his fields at village Khanpur Kolian of Kurukshetra district in Haryana. (ANI)

The district officials named 306 other unrecognized Islamic education institutions in their report as illegal.
“Information about 306 illegal madrasas that were traced was sent to Administration. Darul Uloom Deoband is also an illegal madrasa and is deprived of scholarships & other schemes,” Bharat Lal Gond, District Minority Welfare Officer said.

“An investigation was done on basis of parameters set by the Administration like the year of establishment of the madrasa, the society that runs it, the name of the madrasa, and their source of income,” he added.

“Whatever decision the administration takes, based on that complaint will be filed,” BL Gond further said.

According to reports, 754 madrassas are registered with the district administration. Of which 664 runs up to fifth grade, 80 are up to eighth grade, and the remaining 10 madrassas are class 10 bound.

Last month, the Uttar Pradesh government started the process of conducting a survey of Islamic education institutions.

According to the government order, the survey will be on the basis of 12 aspects. The teams of officials for the Madrassas survey have been constituted by District Magistrate (DM) as per government order.

Earlier, the UP government declared to conduct a survey in unrecognized madrassas to ascertain information on the number of students, teachers, curriculum, and affiliation with any non-government organization.

The survey of unrecognized Madrassas is conducted to ensure the basic facilities of the students of Madrassas.

Danish Azad Ansari Minister of State for Minority Welfare, Muslim Waqf and Waqf Department has informed that the order also holds to give maternity leave and child care leave to women employees working in madrasas in the light of the rules applicable in the Department of Secondary Education and Basic Education.

All the District Magistrates (DMs) in Uttar Pradesh have been issued instructions regarding the survey. The government has also ordered holding a survey of unrecognized madrassas by October 5. Supreme Court

SC Asks Govts To Act Against Hate Speeches Or Face Contempt

The Supreme Court on Friday, while expressing concern over the hate speeches in the country, observed “where have we reached in the name of religion” and ordered suo moto action against offenders without looking into religion.

A bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy said that hate speeches are “disturbing”, especially for a country that is democratic and religion-neutral.

“Where have we reached? What have we reduced religion to? It is tragic. And we speak of scientific temper,” observed the bench.

The bench also issued notices to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Police and asked them to file a report on what action has been taken against such offences within their jurisdiction.

It further ordered that State governments and police authorities should take suo motu action in cases of hate speeches without waiting for the registration of a formal complaint. The apex court said authorities to take action against offenders without looking at their religion of them.

Failure in taking action would attract contempt of court against the erring officials, it added.

It expressed shock at some of the statements and hates speeches made against minority communities during recent religious congregations.

The top court in its order said, “The Respondents (Delhi, UP and Uttarakhand police) will issue directions to their subordinates in this regard without looking at the religion of the accused so that the secular nature of India is preserved.”

The apex court was hearing a plea seeking its urgent intervention to stop the alleged growing menace of targeting and terrorising the Muslim Community in India.

The petition filed by petitioner Shaheen Abdullah, a journalist working with the Maktoob media, sought direction to the Centre and the State governments to initiate an independent, credible and impartial investigation into the incidents of hate crimes and hate speeches.

It further sought directions to initiate appropriate action under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and other relevant penal laws against the speakers and organisations engaging in such hate crimes.

The plea said news and media platforms that conduct programmes openly demonise the Muslim community.

“Public speeches openly call for genocide of Muslims or speeches calling for economic and social boycott of Muslims. Open participation by members of the ruling political party in delivering hate speeches targeting Muslims,” it added.

“Despite the fact that this Court has been cognisant of the genocidal speeches and hate crimes against Muslims made at several events and several orders have been passed by this Court directing the authorities concerned to take appropriate action, the circumstances of the country only seem to be worsening with the growing radicalisation of the Hindu community and the propagation of widespread hate against Muslims that also culminates into the physical abuse of Muslims by radical elements,” the plea stated.
