Women Wrestlers

Women Wrestlers – Betrayed By Their Own

Great Australian opener Mathew Hayden was on the dot when he said something like this: “I have seen God. He walks in at two down.”

No point in guessing the name of the God, with a Number 10 shirt, like football legend, Diego Maradona. Of course, he was talking about Sachin Tendulkar, whose 50th birth anniversary is being celebrated with full-page spreads and cover stories in the Indian media, and rightfully so. He deserves all the applause for an outstanding and brilliant cricketing career. The only hassle is that ‘His Greatness’ chooses to be so stunningly mum when it comes to burning issues affecting the moral and social fabric of our society, including when it comes to cricket and other sports! Such as wrestling!

In crude contrast, remember his ‘patriotic’ tweet defending the Narendra Modi regime’s obstinate and arrogant disregard of the peaceful and protracted farmers’ struggle against the pro-corporate, pro-Adani farm bills, even while thousands of farmers were braving freezing cold, storms and rain, out in the open, especially when scores of them were dying or dead on the non-violent battlefield at the borders of the Indian capital.

Here is what God tweeted at that time, reacting to an outburst of outrage from the global community, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, on how the Indian government was treating the farmers: “India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let’s remain united as a nation.”

At that time, the farmers, who loved him as always, were terribly upset and hurt. So were millions of his fans. Surprisingly, hundreds of Keralites flooded tennis star Maria Sharapova’s social media page with apology messages – they had trolled her in 2015 when she had said in an interview that she had no clue about who Sachin Tendulkar is.

Some of them sent an invite welcoming her to ‘God’s Own Country’. “Sharapova, you were right about Sachin, that he is not a person of quality that you should know,” a social media-user said in Malayalam.

So, has the cat got his tongue this time yet again, even while he reads the glowing tributes being paid to his genius on the field, and ignores the saturation coverage on our brave women wrestlers, who have been out in this heat, often, without water, toilets, mattresses, table fans and basic facilities, blocked by the current regime, with such cruel disdain and insensitivity!

Is this how you treat our great sportspersons, especially women world champions? If this is how they treat world champions, then what is the fate of the ordinary, the invisible, the marginal and the obscure, the common citizen, especially women? So whatever happened to the ‘beti bachao and beti padhao’ slogan in this acche din of contemporary India!

The complainants include a wrestler who was a minor, among others. The accused is a BJP MP, top boss of the Wrestling Federation of India, an alleged history-sheeter, an infamous bahubali from UP, who is refusing to relent, knowing fully well that he is brazenly backed by the top brass of the current BJP establishment in Delhi.

At the centre of the controversy is Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, BJP MP and chief of Wrestling Federation of India

The PM, who never misses a chance to showcase himself with winning sportspersons, has chosen to look the other way, even as he cracks morbid jokes on suicide, and once again plays the ‘victim’ card in Karnataka, where he and his party might face a solid drubbing! Besides, his entire government and party, as usual, seem to care two hoots – including his Union sports minister, infamous for his – Goli maaro… call to the nation, even while our mothers and sisters sat on a peaceful and prolonged protest at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi and elsewhere in the country against the communal and anti-constitutional CAA bill.

These protesters, including a stoic Bajrang Punia, are world champions and Olympic medalists – they are no less in terms of their great and glorious contribution to Indian sports and athletics, often rising from the muddy grassroots of obscurity and hard labour in the arid Hindi hinterland, to reach the pinnacles of competitive success against the best in the world!

And whatever happened to superstar-millionaires like MS Dhoni, and the impeccable idealist of infinite integrity — Rahul Dravid, and badminton stars Saina Nehwal and PS Sindhu, among other greats! If Sania Mirza, a gutsy legend in international women’s tennis with several grand slams as victories, who dared to marry a Pakistani cricketer despite vicious trolls, can speak up so openly, or, if Abhinav Bindra, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, Neeraj Chopra, among others, can stand up for our brilliant women wrestlers, what stops the God at Two Down, or Mr Wall, or Mr Helicopter Shot, to stand up? Or, take their knee in support!

In IPL, 2020, all-rounder Hardik Pandya became the first player in the IPL to take the knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in America, against the murder of George Floyd on the streets by white cops, choking him to death, while he screamed in pain: “Let me breathe!”

And even while Pandya hit a six to reach his half-century, he pointed towards the Mumbai Indians dugout where captain Kieron Pollard (of the West Indies) instantly responded with a raised right fist. That was the spirit!

Even the West Indies’ cricketers took the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in their match against England at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, southwest England, on July 8, 2020. So what stops the Indian cricketers now, former and current? Will the talented ODI captain from Gujarat take the knee and raise his right fist in support of our women wrestlers – once again?

The Olympians are forced to sleep on the pavement out in the open

It is a dark irony that most Indian celebrities have their lips stitched tight, with their eyes wide-open and wide-shut, ostrich-like, when it comes to burning social and political issues. Unlike in the West. Tennis ace Naomi Osaka openly backed the BLM; during one particular US Open, every round she won was followed by a symbolic gesture to honour the Black people who had been murdered by the cops in the US. Significantly, she won that Grand Slam.

Another tennis great, Serena Williams, posted an Instagram video, and what did it show? A young African-American girl overwhelmed by emotion, in a public gathering: “We are Black people, and we shouldn’t have to feel like this,” she said.

NBA legend Michael Jordan condemned the “ingrained racism” in the US. “I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry,” he said. “I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of colour in our country.”

Among other celebrities, actors Tyler Cameron, Kate Beckingsale, Jennifer Lopez, and a host of others, came out openly in support of the BLM movement. At other times, George Clooney, Susan Sarandon, Robert Redford, Sean Penn, among others, have stood for justice against the system, as did others against the brazenly unjust Vietnam War. In the past, Brazilian captain, philosopher and soccer star, Socrates, would take the field with messages against the army dictatorship then ruling the country — in total defiance. So much so, he chose to go to Italy and play there so that he could study the great Italian thinker, Antonio Gramsci, who was imprisoned for years by the fascists – because they were afraid of his genius and his ideas.

And Number Ten jersey holder of Argentina, Maradona! Did the world not see the face of Che Guevara tattooed on his body, and with such pride?

Unlike most Indian celebrities, the cat did not get their tongue when the nation and the world wanted to hear their voices — steadfast, loud and clear, in support of justice — as is the case now with India, with the nation standing up for the cause of the women wrestlers.

Barring, of course, the fanatic bhakts, and their thick-skinned leaders at the helm in the Sangh Parivar and in the Central government!

Befitting Answer On May 10: Modi

People Of K’taka Will Give Befitting Answer On May 10: Modi

Coming down heavily on Congress for drawing parallels between a snake and Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister on Sunday said that the people of Karnataka will give the party a “befitting answer” in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in an election rally in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi on Thursday, said, “PM Modi is like a ‘poisonous snake’, you might think it’s poison or not. If you lick it, you’re dead.”
Lashing out at Congress over the remark, PM Modi said, “Today when I am fighting against corruption, Congress is disturbed the most. Congress is now threatening. They say ‘Modi teri kabra khudegi’. Congress’ topic in Karnataka elections is snake’s poison. They are comparing me with snake and seeking votes from people. For me, people of the country are a form of Lord Shiva. I accept being the snake on the neck of god-like public. The people of Karnataka will give them a befitting answer on May 10.”

PM Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress terming the party as an “outdated engine” and said that it halts development and gives fakes guarantees.

“Congress is an ‘outdated engine’. Development halted due to them. Congress has a bundle of fake guarantees. They don’t fulfil any promise made to the public. ‘Unfulfilled guarantees’ are their record. They betrayed the public, but BJP fulfilled all the guarantees by doing several development works,” PM Modi said while addressing a public meeting here.

Notably, Congress has promised a number of guarantees to the people of Karnataka ahead of the state Assembly polls slated on May 10, including 200 units of free electricity.

The Prime Minister further said that corruption has always prospered under Congress and said that only the BJP can act against corruption.

“Congress has a reputation of 85 per cent commission. People have no faith in their govt. One of their Prime Ministers said that he sends Rupee 1 but 15 paise reach the ground. Congress has always done appeasement politics. BJP is not for appeasement but for satisfaction. Congress has always grown under corruption. Only BJP can take immediate action on corruption,” he said.

“Congress has done nothing for the farmers. They made promises to them but gave nothing to them. It was BJP who gave Rs 2.5 lakh cr to them (farmers) in their accounts. They always neglected the poor. We are constantly working for the development of the farmers,” he added.

Hitting out at Congress and JDS which are contesting the elections separately, PM Modi said that both the parties are the “biggest hindrance” in the development work and added that the unstable government cannot have a “vision”.

“Unstable governments can’t have a vision. During the Congress regime, the world was hopeless of India, but as soon as BJP came to power, the world now looked up to India as a bright spot. Karnataka has decided to elect BJP. The double-engine govt is very important in the state for continuous development. During Congress and JDS rule the development pace slowed down,” he said.

PM Modi said that Karnataka has to be saved from the “corrupt government of Congress and JDS”.

“Today’s gathering will make Congress and JDS lose sleep. Both parties are the biggest hindrance in the process of development. The public has clean-bowled them. We have to save the people of Karnataka from the corrupt govt of Congress and JDS,” he said.

The Prime Minister has hit the ground to campaign for the BJP in the last leg of the campaigning, in which he is conducting a number of poll rallies and roadshows to turn the tide in favour of the party, in what is expected to be a tripartite contest among BJP, Congress and JDS.

Karnataka will go to Assembly polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13. (ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

‘Mann Ki Baat’ Is Like “Prasad Ki Thaal”: Modi In 100th Episode

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who addressed the historic 100th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday, described his connection with the popular monthly radio programme likening it to “Prasad Ki Thaal” (offering to God) and said that it has become a “spiritual journey” for him.

“Like when people go to worship God, they bring along a Thaal of Prasad. For me, ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is like a ‘Prasad Ki Thaal’ at the feet of God in the form of ‘Janata-Janardan’, the people. ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has become a spiritual journey of my being. ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is a journey from the self to the collective. ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is a journey from myself to ourselves. It is not me, but you are its Sanskar Sadhana,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister mentioned women empowerment during his show and that how his monthly radio programme became a platform to bring to the fore woman power which led various campaigns for social causes.

The Prime Minister cited various examples from parts of the country in which people worked to contribute to society at large and said that his mentioning of the achievements of women in the episodes of Mann Ki Baat has gained a lot of praise by the people.

“Be it our army or the sports world, whenever I have talked about the achievements of women, it has been praised a lot. Like we discussed about the women of Deur village of Chhattisgarh. These women, through self-help groups, run campaigns to clean village squares, roads and temples. Similarly, the country also took a lot of inspiration from the tribal women of Tamil Nadu, who exported thousands of Eco-Friendly Terracotta Cups,” PM Modi said.

“In Tamil Nadu itself, 20,000 women came together to revive the Nag river in Vellore. Many such campaigns have been led by our woman power and ‘Mann Ki Baat’ has served as a platform to bring their efforts to the fore,” he added.

The Prime Minister mentioned people putting in efforts in their respective regions for the people and said that he became emotional while talking about them many a time in ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

“Imagine, some of our countrymen have been planting trees on deserted hills and barren land for 40 odd years, many people have been digging stepwells and ponds for water conservation for 30 odd years, cleaning them as well. Some have been teaching underprivileged children for 25-30 years, some are helping in the treatment of the poor. I have become emotional while mentioning them many a time in ‘Mann Ki Baat’,” he said.

“Friends from AIR had to re-record it many times. Today, a lot from the past is coming in front of my eyes. These efforts of the countrymen have inspired me to continuously keep striving,” PM Modi added.

“This programme never let me be away from you. When I was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, it was usual to meet general public. But after coming to Delhi in 2014, I found that nature of work was different, security scenarios were different. In the initial days, something felt different, there was an emptiness,” PM Modi said while describing his initial days at the office of the Prime Minister.

“Fifty years ago, I did not leave my home just to find one day it would be difficult to contact the people of my own country. The very countrymen who are my everything, I could not live separated from them. ‘Mann Ki Baat’ gave me a solution to this challenge, a way to connect with the common man. The post and protocol remained limited to the system and public sentiment, along with crores of people, became an inseparable part of my inner world. I just don’t feel that I am even a little far from you,” he added.

PM Modi’s radio monthly programme completed its 100th episode today which was aired at 11 am live across the country.

The programme, which started on October 3, 2014, has become a key pillar of the government’s citizen-outreach programme addressing multiple social groups such as women, youth, and farmers and has spurred community action.

Apart from 22 Indian languages and 29 dialects, Mann Ki Baat is broadcast in 11 foreign languages including French, Chinese, Indonesian, Tibetan, Burmese, Baluchi, Arabic, Pashtu, Persian, Dari and Swahili. Mann Ki Baat is being broadcast by more than 500 broadcast centres of All India Radio.

A study was conducted regarding the impact of Mann Ki Baat on the lives of the people.

The study showed that over 100 crore people have connected to Mann Ki Baat at least once, it speaks directly to people, celebrates grassroots-level changemakers and achievements of people and has influenced people towards positive actions.

The programme was telecast live by Doordarshan in Raj Bhavans across the country. (ANI)

Sisodia Judicial Custody In ED Case

Modi ji…Sisodia As Court Extends Judicial Custody In ED Case

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday extended Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s judicial custody till May 8 in the ED case pertaining to the excise policy matter.

While being taken to court amid police security, Sisodia told the mediapersons that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not be able to “stop Arvind Kejriwal’s work no matter how much he tries”.
“Modi ji jitni koshish kar le lekin Kejriwal ji ke kaam ko rok nahi payenge Delhi me (No matter how much PM Modi tries, he won’t be able to stop Kejriwal’s work in Delhi),” Sisodia said.

This comes after Rouse Avenue Court on Friday denied bail to Delhi’s former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in a money laundering case in connection with an alleged Excise scam in the national capital.

Special Judge MK Nagpal on Friday dismissed Sisodia’s bail plea in the money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Earlier, appearing for Sisodia, Senior Advocate Dayan Krishnan submitted that it is not the job of the ED to tell what happened in the GoM and the cabinet, the job of the ED should be to tell that if any crime was committed, who benefited from it. The lawyer said that Sisodia cannot be kept in custody only on the basis of speculation. He claimed that no money laundering case is made out against the Aam Aadmi Party leader.

Enforcement Directorate had opposed the bail plea and said: “an illegal ecosystem was created in view to give illegal benefits to liquor cartels to get kickbacks”.

Appearing for ED, Zohaib Hossain submitted before the Court that all the elements of conspiracy are present here in the matter. Conspiracy is hatched in secrecy, the policy made in the public domain, submitted ED lawyer and also said every process of activity dealing with proceeds of crime is money laundering.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 9 arrested former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the liquor policy case, after hours of questioning at Tihar Jail.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI earlier in its ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the GNCTD. (ANI)

BJP's Central Election Committee

K’taka: BJP’s Campaign To Turn Aggressive With Modi’s Rallies

The campaign of Bharatiya Janata Party for the battle of Karnataka will turn into an aggressive mode with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mega roadshow in Bengaluru and back-to-back three public rallies starting today.

PM Modi will be addressing 19 public rallies in different districts besides participating in four roadshows till May 7 as part of the campaign for the elections scheduled to be held on May 10.
BJP, Congress (supported by CPI) and JD(S) are fighting on their own hoping to form a government in the state.

The Prime Minister will enter the campaign in the last leg of the campaigning in which he will conduct a spate of roadshows and rallies in an effort for the BJP to retain power in its “gateway to the South”.

PM Modi will also hold three public rallies in Humnabad at 10 am, Vijayapura at 12 pm, and Kudachi at 3 pm.

His roadshow is scheduled at around 4.30 pm today.

“This roadshow will be of a number of kilometres in length in which three assembly constituencies of Bangalore North will be covered in nearly 45 minutes,” sources had told earlier ANI.

“On April 30, PM Modi will address public meetings organized in Kolar, Channapatna and Mysore districts. After this, on May 2, PM Narendra Modi will campaign in Chitradurga, Vijayanagar, Sindhanur and Kalaburagi. On May 3, he will campaign for BJP candidates in Moodbidire, Karwar and Kittur,” they added.

On the lines of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, the party has also decided to organize a mega roadshow of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly aiming to ensure victories of the party candidates.

Besides these roadshows, the BJP is likely to organise two or three additional roadshows in the state.

Training guns on the Congress over its President Mallikarjun Kharge’s ‘venomous snake’ barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the party and its leaders have lost their minds.

“PM Modi is welcomed across the world with a lot of respect, he said the Congress cannot instigate people with such statements, because the support for the Prime Minister will increase, as much as they abuse him,” Shah said.

“One hand, there is the Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi and on the other, is the BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. This (Karnataka Assembly) election is an opportunity for you to decide if you want a double engine sarkar led by PM Modi, which will take Karnataka forward, or the Congress’s reverse gear sarkar, which will take Karnataka backwards,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had the biggest-ever roadshow in Ahmedabad during the Gujarat Assembly elections last year, which covered nearly 50 km spread across 19 assembly constituencies.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s challenge in Karnataka is to retain power, for which party president JP Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah have already started their election campaigns.

Notably, Karnataka is the only southern state where the BJP is in power.

The BJP is seeking a second term in the state and has exuded confidence in returning to power with a full majority.

The polls for the 224-seat assembly will take place on May 10 and the counting of votes will be held on May 13. (ANI)

Indians from sudan

297 More Indians Rescued From Sudan

As Operation Kaveri is underway, another batch of 297 Indians have been rescued from Sudan and have arrived at Jeddah by INS Teg, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said on Thursday.

Muraleedharan along with other officials of the Indian Navy received the rescued Indians at Jeddah.

He tweeted, “#OperationKaveri continues in swift pace. Happy to receive 297 Indians at Jeddah carried by INS Teg. With this second ship and total six batches, around 1,100 Indians rescued from Sudan have arrived in Jeddah. Repatriation to India of those arriving today will commence shortly.”

After receiving Indian nationals at Jeddah harbour, Minister Muraleedharan also interacted with them and assured them of every possible help from the Government of India.

He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has especially sent me here to welcome you all. For the last three days, I am here and it is good to see you coming back from Sudan.”

“I am here to convey PM Modi’s greetings to you all. He has said that wherever in the world, Indians are troubled, it is the responsibility of the Government of India to save them,” he added.

“You have undergone a lot of difficulties coming back from a strife-torn area but now the Indian navy has taken care of you,” Muraleedharan told the Indian nationals.

Vipin Harilal Mehta, who was among the rescued Indians, “We were stranded in the place where conflict had broken out. We reached Port Sudan by bus and as we reached there we came to know that under the leadership of PM Modi, Operation Kaveri is being carried out to save us.”

Thanking the Indian Navy, Mehta added, “The real heroes, Indian defence personnel saved us and we did not face any problems. We have now reached Jeddah, from where we will go to our home. We are grateful towards our Prime Minister.”

The auditorium, where the rescued Indians waited for further assistance, echoed with slogans praising Indian Navy.

As ceasefires have been called in Sudan, the Government of India is carrying out Operation Kaveri to rescue the stranded Indians from the conflict-hit Northeast African country. A total of around 1,100 Indians have been rescued so far. (ANI)

China and Pakistan Indian Army

Indian Army Raising New Units To Counter China, Pak In Cyber Warfare

Amid the rising activities of adversaries China and Pakistan in the online domain to target India, the Indian Army has operationalised new specialist units to counter these threats and challenges under its cyber warfare initiatives.

The decision was taken during the Army Commanders Conference held in the third week of this month headed by Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande.
“To safeguard the communication networks and increase preparedness levels in this niche domain, Command Cyber Operations and Support Wings (CCOSW) are being raised in Indian Army,” government sources said here.

They said that Cyberspace has emerged as an important component of the military domain both in grey zone warfare as well as conventional operations,” they said.

Highlighting the importance and requirement of such specialist units, the sources said the expansion of cyber warfare capabilities by our adversaries has made the cyber domain more competitive and contested than ever before.

“The Indian Army today is rapidly migrating towards net centricity, which entails an increased reliance on modern communication systems at all levels,” they said.

Specifying the role of these new units, the sources said: “These organizations will assist the formations to undertake the mandated cyber security functions to strengthen the cyber security posture of the Indian Army.”

In the last few years, the Army has taken multiple steps to counter the aggression of adversaries in the form of virtual honey trapping and hacking.

The Defence Cyber Agency is working at the tri-services level to deal with these issues. (ANI)
