Noida Ghaziabad School

Schools Closed In Noida, Gzb Till Friday Amid Deteriorating Air Quality

Noida and Ghaziabad district administrations have decided that all schools under its jurisdiction will discontinue physical classes in schools, as the air quality index in the national capital region continues to deteriorate and remain “severe” category.

All schools in the districts Gautam Budha Nagar and Ghaziabad are directed to follow the implementation of the Graded Responses Action Plan Stage-IV up to November 10.

The administration suggested schools that they conduct classes in online mode.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring Delhi government on Monday decided to reintroduce the odd-even rule from November 13 to 20 in view of the concerns of deterioration in air quality. A decision on further extending the odd-even rule would be taken later.

The odd-even scheme of the Delhi government is a traffic rationing measure under which vehicles with registration numbers ending with an odd digit will be allowed on roads on odd dates and those with an even digit on even dates.

According to the 8-point action plan, there will be a ban on entry of truck traffic into Delhi (except for trucks carrying essential commodities/ providing essential services and all LNG/ CNG/ electric trucks). Also, a ban will be imposed on the plying of Delhi-registered diesel-operated Medium Goods Vehicles (MGVs) and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) in Delhi, except those carrying essential commodities/ providing essential services. GRAP Stage-IV restrictions also include NCR and the Delhi government may take a decision on discontinuing physical classes even for classes VI-IX, and class XI and conduct lessons in an online mode.

The air pollution crisis is an annual affair in Delhi. Air pollution levels can be high during the winter months for a number of reasons, including dust and vehicular pollution, dry-cold weather, stubble burning, burning crop residues after the harvest season, and commuting.

Cold air is denser and moves slower than warm air, so it traps pollution and doesn’t whisk it away. This means that air pollution in winter remains in place for much longer than during the summer.

According to doctors, for any healthy person, a recommended AQI should be less than 50, but these days the AQI has spiked beyond 400, which could prove fatal for people, particularly with comorbidities. (ANI)

Civil Volunteers Rescue Strays

Civilian Volunteers Unite To Rescue Strays, Cattle Stuck In Delhi Flood

A collective effort from animal lovers in Delhi saved the day for hundreds of animals stranded in Yamuna floodplains when waters rose to an alarming level on July 12. In all, over 400 cattle and 450 strays were rescued from the Yamuna Khadar area over three days of efforts and grit.

It all began with a routine call to an animal helpline which said that there were some dogs and cattle stranded in the Yamuna Khadar area, adjoining Delhi-Noida link road after the heavy rains.

A chance site visit revealed the extent of the disaster. Water had risen cutting off whole areas and leaving animals alone and desperate in areas from where humans had already been evacuated. Immediately, a network of animal lovers got created via text messages and calls, summoning help from wherever it might be available. NDRF officials were helped by a bevy of civil volunteers who risked high waters to rescue dogs stuck on trees, roofs or swimming to save their lives.

That same night brought news of animal shelters being submerged. Overnight, volunteers evacuated 350 dogs from one shelter, carrying them through chest-high water to waiting trucks, and 100 dogs from another.

Cattle would prove an even bigger challenge. A gaushala with 400 cows seemed an impossible task but on July 13th with waters reaching an all-time high of 50 years, teams of gausevaks working all night with NDRF veterans moved them to higher ground.

Local administrations were besieged with requests for boats as huge numbers of volunteers arrived at every affected area. Disaster relief planners who had never before taken into account the need to plan for animal evacuations were forced to take stock. Social media was abuzz with visuals of abandoned cattle, desperate dogs, terrified cats, and even rabbits and guinea pigs who needed help.

Expert catchers from Friendicoes, quite literally, jumped into and led the rescue efforts. Gaurav Dar was here, there, and everywhere, organising and cheering on the teams. Sanjay Mohapatra, Tarana Singh, Rashim Sharma, Ayesha Christina, Puneeta, and Abhijeet were other heroes of the day.

Mrs. Ambika Shukla [Trustee], Anushka Chowdhary, and Noor Verma, PFA provided on-ground as well as back-end support as they relentlessly liaised with the administration for boats and tractors.

Cheers go up as six dogs, three goats, and a little pup are offloaded. ‘Everyone’s exhausted but no one is going to stop until the last animal is safely out,’ sums up volunteer Anurag Mahajan.

A delivery agent and his associate were allegedly robbed of Rs 2 lakh at gunpoint by four unidentified men inside the Pragati Maidan tunnel here, Delhi police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Saturday inside the Pragati Maidan tunnel when the victims were going towards Gurugram in a cab to deliver the money.
“A delivery agent and his associate were robbed at gunpoint of Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 lakh cash by a group of unknown assailants inside the Pragati Maidan Tunnel on June 24,” the Delhi Police said.

The 1.5 km tunnel connects New Delhi with Sarai Kale Khan and Noida.

The police further said that following a complaint by the victims, a case has been registered under IPC sections 397 (robbery, or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) and 34 (common intention).

After the CCTV visuals of the incident surfaced on social media, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal hit out at Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena demanding his resignation from his post.

Taking to Twitter, Kejriwal said that the LG should make way for someone “who can provide safety and security to the people of Delhi”.

“LG shud (should) resign. Make way for someone who can provide safety n (and) security to the people of Delhi. If Central govt is unable to make Delhi safe, hand it over to us. We will show u (you) how to make a city safe for its citizens,” the Delhi CM tweeted and posted the video of the accident.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police Pranav Tayal said in connection with the incident, the complainant, identified as Patel Sajan Kumar, who works as a delivery agent for a private firm in Chandni Chowk, gave a written complaint in which he mentioned that he along with his associate Jigar Patel was going to Gurugram to deliver the cash to a client.

Delhi Minister Atishi also took to Twitter and said, “LG sir: If you get free time from taking credit for @ArvindKejriwal’s work, then sometimes pay attention to your constitutional responsibility. It is your job to provide security to the people of Delhi. And now incidents of theft, dacoity and murder are happening in Delhi in broad daylight. Either you take the responsibility of security, or else resign.” (ANI)

nuh notices to Uttar Pradesh Haryana and Delhi governments

No Scope For Religion Hate Crimes In A Secular Country: SC

The Supreme Court on Monday asserted that there is no scope for hate crime on basis of religion in a secular country such as India and stressed that it has to be rooted out.

A bench of justices KM Joseph and BV Nagarathna said that there is a growing consensus around hate speech.
“There cannot be any compromise on hate speech at all,” said the bench, adding that it is only if the State acknowledges the problem of hate speech that a solution can be found.

It is the primary duty of the State to protect its citizens from any such hate crimes, the bench stressed while hearing a plea against hate crimes.

“When action is not taken against hate crimes then an atmosphere is fostered which is very dangerous and it has to be rooted out from our lives. There cannot be any compromise on hate speech at all,” it observed.

The observation of the apex court came while hearing a plea of a Muslim man who has alleged that he was assaulted and abused in the name of religion on July 4, 2021, by a “screwdriver gang” of criminals as he had boarded a car to go to Aligarh from Noida.

The petitioner Kazeem Ahmad Sherwani alleged that the police has not bothered to register any complaint of hate crime.

“If a person comes to the police and says that I was wearing a cap and my beard was pulled and abused in the name of religion and still no complaint is registered, then it is a problem,” the bench proclaimed.

Justice Joseph said that be in a minority or majority, certain rights are inherent in human beings.

“You are born into a family and raised in one. We have no choice in our religion, but we stand out as a nation. That’s the beauty, the greatness of our nation. We have to understand this,” said Justice Joseph.

The apex court asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a detailed affidavit and posted the matter for further hearing on March 3. (ANI)

Delhi NCR air quality

Delhi-NCR AQI Continue To Remain In ‘Very Poor’ Category

The air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor category’ with Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 381 on Monday, as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR).

The AQI in the Delhi University area was 389, while in the IIT Delhi area, it was recorded at 382. In the Airport (T3) area, the quality of air was recorded at 387.
According to SAFAR, the AQI in the National Capital Region (NCR) also remained in the ‘Very Poor Category’. The AQI in Gurugram stood was recorded to be 388, while Noida also registered the same figure.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) from 0 to 100 is considered as good, while from 100 to 200 it is moderate, from 200 to 300 it is poor, and from 300 to 400 it is said to be very poor and from 400 to 500 or above it is considered as severe.

Even after the overall air quality of the national capital deteriorated suddenly, rapidly, and unanticipatedly, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on Sunday the sub-committee for invoking actions under GRAP of CAQM decided that there is no need for invoking the stage III of GRAP at this moment, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change informed on Sunday.

It is pertinent to note that Stage III of GRAP means a ban on all construction and demolition activities except those of national importance.

Considering this sudden rise in the average AQI of Delhi, the Sub-Committee for invoking actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) met today to take stock of the situation.

During the meeting, it was noted that this sudden and steep dip in air quality parameters in the last 24 hours in the region led to the overall AQI of Delhi moving into the “Severe” category today is an aberration as the forecasts predict immediate improvement with the overall AQI to move into the ‘Very Poor’ category from tonight itself, the Ministry stated.

Various agencies responsible for implementing measures under the GRAP and Pollution Control Boards (PCBs) of NCR and DPCC have also been advised to intensify pollution control and mitigating measures under Stage-I and Stage-II of GRAP in the entire NCR to prevent deterioration of air quality.

Further, the Sub-Committee is closely watching the situation and will review the air quality scenario accordingly. The revised schedule of GRAP is available on the Commission’s official website and can be accessed via caqm.nic.in, the release further stated. (ANI)

Delhi Air Quality

Air Quality In Some Areas Of Delhi Falls Into Severe Category

Air quality in Delhi fell into ‘severe’ category with an AQI of 457 in the Anand Vihar area on Saturday and it was also recorded in the severe category in Noida, as per National Air Quality Index.

According to data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Delhi’s overall air quality was 381 in the ‘very poor’ category in the afternoon. In the Delhi University area, the air quality was at 399, also in the ‘very poor category.
On Mathura road, it was 380. In Gurugram it was 349 while Noida was worst with an AQI of 411 in the severe category.

Today morning the air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category with the overall air quality index (AQI) at 309.

Morning walkers, cyclists, and joggers working out near India Gate amid dipping air quality in New Delhi were seen affected due to the dip in the air quality.

“We’re from Gurugram. There is breathing difficulty and irritation in the eyes,” a member of a group of cyclists told ANI.

People felt this way because, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the AQI in the overall Delhi region was in the ‘very poor category at 309.

“Local surface winds are 6 to 8 km/h (Max Temperature 32 deg C; Min 14-15 deg C) for the next three days that cause weak dispersion of pollutants. Peak ‘Mixing layer height’ during daytime (~1.0-1.5 km) leads to moderate vertical dispersion of pollutants,” read SAFAR’s official statistics.

The air quality watchdog also informed that strong winds at the transport level blowing from the northwest direction from stubble burning areas are likely to transport pollutants to Delhi and its share in Delhi’s PM2.5 is likely to increase further.

Environmentalist Vimlendu Jha told ANI that Severe category AQI is very dangerous for health and it affects even healthy people and seriously impacts those with existing diseases. (ANI)
