UK Bans Purchase Of Huawei Equipment For 5G Network

The United Kingdom on Tuesday announced its decision to ban British companies from buying Huawei-produced equipment for 5G networks from the end of the year.

“We have been clear-eyed from the start that Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE were deemed to be high-risk…The NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) has now reported to ministers that they have significantly changed their security assessment of Huawei’s presence in the UK’s 5G network…The UK can no longer be confident it will be able to guarantee the security of future Huawei 5G equipment…,” Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, told the UK Parliament.

“The government agrees with the NCSC advice that the best way to secure our networks is for operators to stop using the new affected Huawei equipment to build UK’s future 5G networks,” he said.

He added, “From the end of this year, telecoms operators must no longer buy any 5G equipment from Huawei. Once the security bill is passed, it will be illegal for them to do so.”

Dowden further said that no new kit is to be added from January 2021 and UK 5G networks will be Huawei free by the end of 2027.

This comes in the backdrop of US designating Chinese telecom companies Huawei and ZTE Corp as national security threats, saying they have close ties with the Chinese Communist Party and China’s military apparatus. (ANI)

Donald Trump

The Future Of America

A question that is increasingly being asked in the USA is whether America will survive the Trump presidency. The triple crises now dragging the United States down could break its resilience and unleash a response that could be devastating for the world as well as the USA itself.

America has faced many disasters and lived through many challenges through history such as political and police racism, security crackdowns and economic ravages, external attacks and terrorism. But each time its somewhat asymmetrical democracy has helped it to recover keeping the country on top of the world. This time it may be different. The polarisation, the experiences and the expectations of different communities are deeply entrenched and unprecedent.

The United States has slid into significant internal divisions. It is suffering a pandemic out of control due to Government mishandling. Further it is trying to cope with diminishing authority on the world stage. Compounding this, the country is being led by a narcissist megalomaniac President who has little understanding of the threats let alone skills to manage them.

The situation is not only dangerous for the United States, but for a western world and its allies that have become reliant on USA to maintain a world in their favour. These are extremely unsettling times.

The US health system, not one of the wonders of the world, is showing signs of wearing down under nature’s attack, the Coronavirus Pandemic. The response to the pandemic is under a President who thinks it is a bad dream that will dissipate when everyone wakes up. His stewardship has been childish, immature and sometimes downright dangerous as he addresses the Virus as if it is a rival politician. ‘I won’t wear the mask’ he said early on as if the Virus would retreat against his cowboy defiance. Many in his base followed him. They are obsessed with ‘freedom to do and act as they want’ against scientific advice and putting the rest of the population at risk.

These Americans are confusing political authoritarianism with nature’s indiscriminating force. Nature does not understand ‘freedom’. The Pandemic isn’t going to do a U-turn simply because Jo America ala Captain Freedom doesn’t like nature acting like ‘communists’!  So they defy the virus with no masks, no maintaining social distance and no staying away from crowded beaches. It is bizarre, surrealist and dumbfounding.

It is clear that this President has never dealt with a political or social crises. He of course knows how to deal with personal financial challenges.

The pandemic has divided Americans state wise, economically and racially. The virus has affected the poor, the blacks and the Hispanics most. There is a sense among them that the Government has deliberately allowed the virus to spread. Moreover different states in USA are approaching the pandemic differently as there is no coherent national plan or a collective Federal attempt to signal ‘we are all in it together’. If the pandemic continues to increase, it won’t be long before some states close their borders and manage their economies. A Pandemic that could have brought a spirit of unity, may lead to fissiparous tendencies.

Added to this is the sudden eruption of race politics on centre stage in America. The Afro-American population of USA has suffered racism from the days when they were brought as slaves to the modern era.

Much has changed for the Afro-American. From days of slavery when they were in chains to now as proud, free and politically strong community. But significant portions of white America has failed to move on with history. Their treatment of black Americans betrays prejudices and attitudes that were once found during slavery.

For many White Americans on the extreme right, the romance and tolerance of equality is now wearing thin as latent prejudices resurface. They want the White America as it once was.

But Afro-Americans are not the subdued population of yesteryear. They have dignity and expect respect. Black America isn’t going to accept intimidation, suppression or marginalisation anymore. For Black America, history cannot go backwards but only forward. Black Lives Matter is a powerful movement showing that the Afro-American isn’t going to take resurgent ‘White supremacy’ lying down.

In favour of Afro Americans is the fact that the vast majority of White Americans also want to see an end to racism. They have collective shame about slavery and the treatment of Black Americans subsequently. Many White Americans joined in the protests and demonstrations that led to apparent equality. Now most White Americans actually support Black Lives Matter.

Afro-Americans are not the only group suffering racism in USA. The Hispanics, the Asians and the Muslims are also facing different levels of racism from White Supremacist

Unfortunately the constituency of ‘White supremacists’ is not small. Their racism is back on the agenda, given tacit encouragement by the President himself who has fuelled latent dreams of a permanent ‘white Nirvana’ in USA, a dream forged in falsehood.

White supremacist Americans have some choices to make for the future of USA. They can either continue to create tensions until they retreat into segregated white only areas or create de facto apartheid making life hell for any Black or Asian living in their area. They can come to terms with history and start to accept Afro-Americans as equals or they can start to fragment America creating a breakaway country where they can bask in whiteness.  Either way, they are likely to precipitate bloody Balkanisation of American society if they continue to live in a time warp.

Unless a remarkable leader pushes the genie back into the bottle, the future of America is bleak and facing fragmentation. A democratic President can only buy time but not bury the recurring past.

It will be an irony of history that where white Americans created reservations for Native Americans, the white supremacists will end up in a smaller country which effectively becomes a ‘White reservation’ in North America.

Thirdly the external international challenge is equally daunting. The United States has lost significant status in the world. Instead of leading, it often walks away from major international treaties and conferences. It walked away from the United Nations Human Rights Council as it did from the Climate Change Agreement and the Iran deal to name a few. It has even walked away from WHO. Usually it is when people are losing that they walk away from further humiliation.

The USA no longer has the power to influence even its friendly countries to its bidding. Much has changed in the last two decades. It hasn’t quite adjusted to a world of multilateral powers. It is increasingly being challenged by China and appears to be at a loss for an effective response.

China is testing it in South China Sea, in South East Asia and lately in South Asia as it intrudes into Indian Territory. The USA almost feels obliged to come to the aid of India, but in what form? China is almost provoking the United States to wage a direct war. This is a dangerous game. Unlike the cold war when USSR and USA waged proxy wars, this one seems to be getting close to a direct confrontation.

Trump has so far avoided foreign wars. In an election year where his ratings are going down he may well be tempted and encouraged by his advisors to rise to the bait to look tough as his handling of Coronavirus pandemic has cost him his popularity. A foreign war to gain domestic votes is a frequent risk from democracies with internal crises.

However Trump has avoided an international war and is unlikely to engage in a conflict with China. Even he can see that the personal and general costs are too high. Chinese history has shown that China can sacrifice millions to survive. Although Opulent China has not been tested in a war yet. Americans do not have that sort of appetite for unending body bags. A USA ducking a war might make China look tougher than it is. This won’t go down well with many of the armchair warriors from neo con and American Supremacist tribes who have been keen to restore American power again in the world through a bloody war.

A new President in November is not going to be able to reverse America’s status. He will have to accept a multilateral powered world and re-engage in international institutions as well as treaty arrangements from a position of weakness. Whether he will be able to heal the divisions within is another matter. He is likely to face persistent criticism from American ‘Supremacists’ who feel betrayed by loss of American dominance in the world. They, like ‘white supremacists’ won’t accept the march of history. And when crises ridden democracies can’t unite by fighting abroad, they start to self-combust.

A superpower, facing internal unrest, an uncontrollable pandemic and a fall in international status, does not bode well for the world or the world order. The Trump presidency will be seen in history as a sort of hubris of the American power and American unity. Will the next President be able to slow it?  First the incumbent Trump has to be defeated and then hope restored. Yet it may be all too late. Trump has stayed in power two years more than was safe. He wasn’t removed when the threat was crossing the threshold of no return. A lot will depend on whether militant White Supremacist Americans will accept change or not. It may be too late now and it may be a case of not whether the USA will break up but when will it break up.

Gehlot Shows Victory Sign After CLP Meeting In Jaipur

After the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, party leaders and MLAs flashed a victory sign, apparently expressing confidence that their government has the requisite majority in the Assembly.

Leaders and MLAs gathered at Gehlot’s residence for the meeting.

Over 90 MLAs were present at Gehlot ‘s residence in Jaipur, for the CLP meeting, said sources.

Earlier, senior Congress leader and spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the Gehlot-led state government is stable and will complete the full term.

He asserted that Congress held a discussion with Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot several times in the last 48 hours.

The crisis in Rajasthan Congress intensified with Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot at loggerheads. While Gehlot is blaming BJP for trying to destabilise the state government by poaching MLAs, Pilot is camping in Delhi to speak to the party leadership regarding the political turmoil in the state.

Congress has 107 MLAs and the Gehlot government is supported by 10 Independent MLAs and two each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Tribal Party while BJP has 72 seats in the 200-member Assembly.

As many as 30 Congress MLAs and some independent legislators who are in touch with Sachin Pilot have pledged their support to him and have vouched to stand by whatever decision he takes, sources said.

BJP has claimed that the Ashok Gehlot-led government has lost the majority in the state

“Sachin Pilot was the rightful candidate for the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister but Ashok Gehlot took the charge; a conflict in the party began since then. What is happening today is the result of that conflict. The state government has lost the majority,” Rajasthan BJP President Satish Punia said today. (ANI)

Google Announces $10 Billion Investment In India

Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday announced an investment of Rs 75,000 crore or approximately US$10 billion into India over the next five to seven years through ‘Google for India Digistation Fund’.

This move is significant as it comes in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and as multinational companies across the world look at alternative investment destinations.

“Excited to announce Google for India Digitisation Fund. Through it, we will invest Rs 75,000 crore or approx US$10 Billon into India over the next 5-7 yrs. We’ll do this through a mix of equity investments, partnerships and operational infrastructure in ecosystem investments,” said Pichai.

Pichai along with Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad virtually attended the sixth annual edition of Google for India.

“This is a reflection of our confidence in the future of India and its digital economy,” said Pichai.

He added that the investments will focus on four areas important to India’s digitisation.

Listing out the areas, Pichai elaborated, “First enabling affordable access and information to every Indian in their own language. Second, building new products and services that are deeply relevant to India’s unique needs. Third, empowering businesses as they continue or embark on the digital transformation. Fourth, leveraging technology in AI for social good in areas like health, education and agriculture.”

“When I was young, every piece of technology brought new opportunities to learn and grow but I always had to wait for it to arrive from some places. Today people in India no more have to wait for technology to come to you. A whole new generation of technologies is happening in India first,” said Pichai.

Earlier today Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with Pichai and discussed a range of subjects like a new work culture in coronavirus times, data security and cyber safety. (ANI)

India-China Corps Commander Meet On Wednesday

Corps Commander-level talks between India and China will be held on July 14 at Chushul in Eastern Ladakh.

The talks will focus mainly on the second phase of disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), said the Indian Army officials.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that diplomatic and military officials of India and China will continue their meetings to take forward the process of troops disengagement and de-escalation at the LAC.

On July 5, the Special Representatives of India and China on the Boundary Question– Ajit Doval and Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi— had a ‘frank and in-depth exchange’ during a telephone conversation during which they agreed that both sides should complete the ongoing disengagement process along the LAC expeditiously.

As part of the first phase of disengagement, Chinese troops have moved back from Finger 4 to Finger 5 in the Finger area.

They have already moved back by around two kilometres in the other friction points including Galway valley, Hot Springs and Patrolling Point-15, top government sources told ANI.

The Indian side has also moved back as per the mutual disengagement agreed upon during the Corps Commander-level talks, the sources added. The vacant spaces will be treated as temporary non-patrolling zones by both sides and their troops will not come there. (ANI)

Pakistan Restores Bank Accounts Of Hafiz Saeed

As Pakistan has restored the bank accounts of the outlawed Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief and the 2008 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed and his four top aides, Major General (Retd), KK Sinha, Defence Expert on Monday said that this shows how restricted are the hands of United Nations Security Council.

“It’s a very big development which has its own negative aspects and compulsions. Hafiz Saeed and other top leaders. Last year in the month of October these 5 terrorists had said that they are facing issues in looking after their families following which they had appealed to the United Nations Security Council’s review standing committee for getting pocket money,” said Sinha.

“Pakistan government approved it and recommended it in the month of October stating that these leaders should get money. In the month of May, Pakistan has already taken them out of the jail already. The AFTA has extended Pakistan’s duration. This shows how restricted and tied are the United Nations Security Council be it the matter of WHO or terror-funding,” he added

He continued saying, even the United States has announced a bounty of $ 10 million and this shows the two faces of the United Nations and Pakistan.

“If we get too dependant on it thinking that these kinds of organisations can be controlled by the help of AFT or Financial Access Taskforce so it’s never going to happen, we have to take direct actions at the national level,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gurmit Singh, another Defence Expert said, “These top five terrorists include the 26/11 mastermind. This is formal approval from the United Nations Sanctions Committee.”

“In fact, if you really look at it, they are enlisted terrorists from the UN point of view and it may be recalled that in October 2019, Pakistan had requested the UN Security Council Anti-Terror Committee to restore the bank accounts,” he added.

“This year in May Pakistan has set free all the terrorist operatives. It may be remembered that this head of JUD has got 23 FIRs against him for the terror financing, he is an enlisted terrorist. It’s very funny that Pakistan Government, Army, ISI continue to go on the track of terror as a strategy,” he added.

Pakistan has restored the bank accounts of the top five terrorists of defunct Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JUD) and Lashkar -e-Taiba (LeT), including its chief and Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.

The restoration of bank accounts has taken place following formal approval of the Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), The News reported on Saturday.

Abdul Salam Bhuttavi, Haji M Ashraf, Yahya Mujahid and Zafar Iqbal – all on the UN Security Council’s terrorists list ‘were the other members of the JuD and Lashkar-e-Taiba who got their bank accounts restored. (ANI)

‘Flying As We Knew It Has Changed, Crew Wears PPE Suits’

Gitanjali Dey, 28, a Qatar Airways cabin crew, says aviation industry has been severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic but work ethics and hope keep them flying

I am employed as a cabin crew with Qatar Airways and currently based in Doha even though my parents live in Kolkata. I have been a part of the aviation industry for nearly six years now and I can vouch that most airlines across the world are witnessing their toughest times ever.

I am proud to say that despite the prevailing panic amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Qatar Airways never stopped its operations completely; it would be safe to say that we showed exemplary courage and confidence and kept flying the travellers, many of whom desperately needed to reach home.

I say this because it is tough to be away from your family at such an uncertain time. But my parents have taught me to respect work ethics and rules in place, so I will go home only after it is totally safe for both me and my family. Till that happens, I try to be in touch via voice or video calls for the wellbeing of my parents concerns me.

The flying operations as we knew them have changed completely. Instead of the stylish uniform, we are now covered from head to toe in personal protective (PPE) gear, with face shields, surgical masks and sanitised gloves.

It is mandatory for us to use hand sanitizers at regular intervals, whether or not we have come in contact with someone. We also take care to serve the customers food that is prepared keeping in mind all the latest health and hygiene standards in place.

Thankfully, most airlines are flying on half-capacity so we are able to give proper attention to every individual on board. We were doing that earlier too, but in view of the pandemic the crew has to be extra attentive. The planes are thoroughly sanitized and the temperature of each passenger is checked before they board the plane.

As a cabin crew I report for duty after a gap of 2-3 weeks; so on an average every month I go on international flights twice. Initially, I was a bit worried about having to operate in a potentially contagious atmosphere, but with time those anxieties have subsided. I actually feel happy to be able to contribute in easing the lives of those who still have to travel at such times.

The pandemic has been particularly devastating for the aviation and hospitality industry the worldwide. With most international airports still not fully operational, a large number of aircraft grounded and thousands of job layoffs, we are headed for very uncertain times ahead.

But we have hope.

It will perhaps take a long time for the aviation industry to recover as more and more people are giving up on travelling unless it is an emergency. The world is re-calibrating itself to weather the pandemic and its after-effects. For now, I guess each individual will have to maintain self-discipline and practice social distancing, so we can win this war against the virus.

Rajasthan Crisis: Pilot May Leave Cong With 30 MLAs

As many as 30 Congress MLAs and some independent legislators who are in touch with Sachin Pilot have pledged their support to him and have vouched to stand by whatever decision he takes, sources said as the political crisis deepens in Rajasthan.

The crisis in Rajasthan Congress intensified with state Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot at loggerheads, while Gehlot is blaming BJP for trying to destabilise the state government by poaching MLAs, Pilot is camping in Delhi to speak to the party leadership regarding the political turmoil in the state.

A meeting of Congress Legislative Party will take place at Gehlot’s residence at 10:30 am on Monday. Gehlot has also called a meeting of party MLAs and ministers in Jaipur on Sunday night.

Taking to Twitter, Gehlot said that special operations group (SOG) gave notices the Chief Minister, Deputy CM, Chief Whip, some other ministers and MLAs in connection with Congress Legislative Party’s complaint regarding horse-trading by BJP.

“CM, Dy CM, Chief Whip, some other ministers & MLAs have received notices from SOG to record their statements in connection with Congress Legislative Party’s complaint regarding horse-trading by BJP. It’s not appropriate to present it differently by some media outlets,” Rajasthan CM tweeted.

According to sources, Pilot has sought an appointment with party’s interim president Sonia Gandhi but time for the meeting has not yet been given by her. Although, Pilot met another party leader to apprise him about the situation in the state and spelled out his grievance.

As of now, many MLAs, who are believed to be in the Pilot camp, are also in Delhi to meet the party leadership.

According to sources, the deputy chief minister has the support of nearly 30 Congress MLAs along with many independent legislators.

The clash between Gehlot and Pilot is also over the post of PCC Chief as Gehlot Camp wants that ‘One Leader One Post’ formula to be implemented in Rajasthan. Currently, Sachin Pilot is heading the PCC besides holding the Deputy CM post.

Sources close to Sachin Pilot have informed that the young leader is upset with the SOG notice issued to him. He believes it is aimed to record his phone calls and keep him under surveillance.

Many of Pilot’s supporters feel indignation and told Pilot that they cannot work with Ashok Gehlot. Also, Pilot is unlikely to attend the meeting called by Gehlot today, according to sources.

Avinash Pande, Rajasthan Congress In-charge alleged that BJP is behind the political crisis in the state.

“Congress is strongly working together. All MLAs have trust and faith in the party and CM Ashok Gehlot. BJP is deliberately diverting the present situation. This conspiracy has been hatched by BJP & they have been trying this for one year. I can say that all Rajasthan Congress MLAs will work together and Congress government in Rajasthan will complete its five years of tenure,” he said.

Meanwhile, BJP Rajasthan unit President Satish Poonia rejected claims by the Congress that the BJP was behind the present political uncertainty in the state.

“We are not even thinking about forming a government in the state. This government will fall of its own ‘karma’ (deeds). We (BJP) are sitting in the spectator’s gallery and watching the drama unfold,” Poonia told ANI.

It is not the responsibility of the BJP to save a government that is falling due to internal bickering, he said.

Pilot’s former colleague and BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the Rajasthan Deputy CM is being “sidelined” and “persecuted” by Gehlot.

“Sad to see my erstwhile colleague, Sachin Pilot too, being sidelined and persecuted by Rajasthan CM, Ashok Gehlot. Shows that talent and capability find little credence in the Congress,” tweeted Scindia, who quit Congress in March to join BJP. (ANI)

BJP Won’t Be Able To Topple Rajasthan Govt: Congress

Amid ongoing political turmoil in Rajasthan, senior Congress leader PL Punia said that while the BJP succeeded in toppling the government in Madhya Pradesh, it would fail to do so in Rajasthan.

Speaking to ANI, Punia said, “The BJP is working as a political business in Rajasthan. They are trying to purchase MLAs by offering them 10-15 crore each as suggested by the Rajasthan Chief Minister. The police have arrested two persons, who were charged with trying to buy elected legislatures. It is very unfortunate.”

“As many as 28 MLAs submitted a privilege motion, urging steps to be taken against the BJP. It is in its (BJP’s) DNA to grab power by whatever means. They make use of agencies like CBI and ED to run after their rivals,” he added.

He alleged that the BJP does not believe in democracy and said, “In Madhya Pradesh, they toppled the Congress government by unfair means and made Shivraj Singh Chouhan the Chief Minister. It is the same story everywhere, including in Rajya sabha elections. While they succeeded in Madhya Pradesh, they will not do so in Rajasthan.”

Reports have surfaced in the media regarding Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot arriving in Delhi, along with close to two dozen MLAs loyal to him as the crisis in the Congress government in the state.

The BJP has, however, denied any involvement in the ongoing feud within the Rajasthan Congress. (ANI)
