Women Wrestlers

Women Wrestlers – Betrayed By Their Own

Great Australian opener Mathew Hayden was on the dot when he said something like this: “I have seen God. He walks in at two down.”

No point in guessing the name of the God, with a Number 10 shirt, like football legend, Diego Maradona. Of course, he was talking about Sachin Tendulkar, whose 50th birth anniversary is being celebrated with full-page spreads and cover stories in the Indian media, and rightfully so. He deserves all the applause for an outstanding and brilliant cricketing career. The only hassle is that ‘His Greatness’ chooses to be so stunningly mum when it comes to burning issues affecting the moral and social fabric of our society, including when it comes to cricket and other sports! Such as wrestling!

In crude contrast, remember his ‘patriotic’ tweet defending the Narendra Modi regime’s obstinate and arrogant disregard of the peaceful and protracted farmers’ struggle against the pro-corporate, pro-Adani farm bills, even while thousands of farmers were braving freezing cold, storms and rain, out in the open, especially when scores of them were dying or dead on the non-violent battlefield at the borders of the Indian capital.

Here is what God tweeted at that time, reacting to an outburst of outrage from the global community, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, on how the Indian government was treating the farmers: “India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let’s remain united as a nation.”

At that time, the farmers, who loved him as always, were terribly upset and hurt. So were millions of his fans. Surprisingly, hundreds of Keralites flooded tennis star Maria Sharapova’s social media page with apology messages – they had trolled her in 2015 when she had said in an interview that she had no clue about who Sachin Tendulkar is.

Some of them sent an invite welcoming her to ‘God’s Own Country’. “Sharapova, you were right about Sachin, that he is not a person of quality that you should know,” a social media-user said in Malayalam.

So, has the cat got his tongue this time yet again, even while he reads the glowing tributes being paid to his genius on the field, and ignores the saturation coverage on our brave women wrestlers, who have been out in this heat, often, without water, toilets, mattresses, table fans and basic facilities, blocked by the current regime, with such cruel disdain and insensitivity!

Is this how you treat our great sportspersons, especially women world champions? If this is how they treat world champions, then what is the fate of the ordinary, the invisible, the marginal and the obscure, the common citizen, especially women? So whatever happened to the ‘beti bachao and beti padhao’ slogan in this acche din of contemporary India!

The complainants include a wrestler who was a minor, among others. The accused is a BJP MP, top boss of the Wrestling Federation of India, an alleged history-sheeter, an infamous bahubali from UP, who is refusing to relent, knowing fully well that he is brazenly backed by the top brass of the current BJP establishment in Delhi.

At the centre of the controversy is Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, BJP MP and chief of Wrestling Federation of India

The PM, who never misses a chance to showcase himself with winning sportspersons, has chosen to look the other way, even as he cracks morbid jokes on suicide, and once again plays the ‘victim’ card in Karnataka, where he and his party might face a solid drubbing! Besides, his entire government and party, as usual, seem to care two hoots – including his Union sports minister, infamous for his – Goli maaro… call to the nation, even while our mothers and sisters sat on a peaceful and prolonged protest at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi and elsewhere in the country against the communal and anti-constitutional CAA bill.

These protesters, including a stoic Bajrang Punia, are world champions and Olympic medalists – they are no less in terms of their great and glorious contribution to Indian sports and athletics, often rising from the muddy grassroots of obscurity and hard labour in the arid Hindi hinterland, to reach the pinnacles of competitive success against the best in the world!

And whatever happened to superstar-millionaires like MS Dhoni, and the impeccable idealist of infinite integrity — Rahul Dravid, and badminton stars Saina Nehwal and PS Sindhu, among other greats! If Sania Mirza, a gutsy legend in international women’s tennis with several grand slams as victories, who dared to marry a Pakistani cricketer despite vicious trolls, can speak up so openly, or, if Abhinav Bindra, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, Neeraj Chopra, among others, can stand up for our brilliant women wrestlers, what stops the God at Two Down, or Mr Wall, or Mr Helicopter Shot, to stand up? Or, take their knee in support!

In IPL, 2020, all-rounder Hardik Pandya became the first player in the IPL to take the knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in America, against the murder of George Floyd on the streets by white cops, choking him to death, while he screamed in pain: “Let me breathe!”

And even while Pandya hit a six to reach his half-century, he pointed towards the Mumbai Indians dugout where captain Kieron Pollard (of the West Indies) instantly responded with a raised right fist. That was the spirit!

Even the West Indies’ cricketers took the knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in their match against England at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, southwest England, on July 8, 2020. So what stops the Indian cricketers now, former and current? Will the talented ODI captain from Gujarat take the knee and raise his right fist in support of our women wrestlers – once again?

The Olympians are forced to sleep on the pavement out in the open

It is a dark irony that most Indian celebrities have their lips stitched tight, with their eyes wide-open and wide-shut, ostrich-like, when it comes to burning social and political issues. Unlike in the West. Tennis ace Naomi Osaka openly backed the BLM; during one particular US Open, every round she won was followed by a symbolic gesture to honour the Black people who had been murdered by the cops in the US. Significantly, she won that Grand Slam.

Another tennis great, Serena Williams, posted an Instagram video, and what did it show? A young African-American girl overwhelmed by emotion, in a public gathering: “We are Black people, and we shouldn’t have to feel like this,” she said.

NBA legend Michael Jordan condemned the “ingrained racism” in the US. “I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry,” he said. “I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of colour in our country.”

Among other celebrities, actors Tyler Cameron, Kate Beckingsale, Jennifer Lopez, and a host of others, came out openly in support of the BLM movement. At other times, George Clooney, Susan Sarandon, Robert Redford, Sean Penn, among others, have stood for justice against the system, as did others against the brazenly unjust Vietnam War. In the past, Brazilian captain, philosopher and soccer star, Socrates, would take the field with messages against the army dictatorship then ruling the country — in total defiance. So much so, he chose to go to Italy and play there so that he could study the great Italian thinker, Antonio Gramsci, who was imprisoned for years by the fascists – because they were afraid of his genius and his ideas.

And Number Ten jersey holder of Argentina, Maradona! Did the world not see the face of Che Guevara tattooed on his body, and with such pride?

Unlike most Indian celebrities, the cat did not get their tongue when the nation and the world wanted to hear their voices — steadfast, loud and clear, in support of justice — as is the case now with India, with the nation standing up for the cause of the women wrestlers.

Barring, of course, the fanatic bhakts, and their thick-skinned leaders at the helm in the Sangh Parivar and in the Central government!

Tharoor on kerala story

It Is Not Our Kerala Story: Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday reacted to the ongoing ‘The Kerala Story’ controversy on Twitter.

Taking to the microblogging site he shared the poster of the film and wrote, “It may be your Kerala story. It is not our Kerala story.”
https://twitter.com/ShashiTharoor/status/1652675921717997569

‘The Kerala Story’ has become a topic for discussion around the numbers being exaggerated in the trailer of the film.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film is all set to hit the theatres on May 5, 2023.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles.

The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Leader of Opposition in Kerala Legislative Assembly VD Satheesan recently said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ should not be granted permission for screening.

“The film ‘The Kerala Story’ which falsely claims that 32,000 women in Kerala converted and became members of the Islamic State, should not be granted permission for screening. The trailer clearly shows what the film intends to say”, Satheesan said in a Facebook post.

He also alleged that the film is part of an attempt to implement Sangh Parivar’s agenda and create a social divide by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups.

“This is not an issue of freedom of expression but part of an attempt to implement the Sangh Parivar agenda to create a divide in the society by casting a shadow of doubt over the minority groups”, he said. (ANI)

Jaishankar on Multilateralism

Multilateralism Is Getting Weakened By UN’s Resistance To Reform: Jaishankar

While delivering his remarks at the MIREX, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India has always been a staunch votary of multilateralism. India believes that this is fundamental to the maintenance of global order.

“The challenge however is the resistance to reforming multilateralism particularly the working of the United Nations and its bodies. The longer this carries on, the weaker multilateralism will become,” Jaishankar said.
“The growth of multilateralism and plurilateral. More countries are going to find arrangements among themselves on pressing issues when they find that the United Nations cannot rise to a challenge,” he said firmly.

He said that India is overall a nation that is deeply committed to promoting collective solutions for global good.

“Our Presidency of the G20 this year is devoted to focusing on the real challenges to Global Development and Global growth,” Jaishankar added.

For the first time in 2015, Prime Minister Modi articulated a comprehensive view that spanned the entirety of the Indian Ocean and its Islands. These subsequently became the building block for the Indo-Pacific vision that emerged thereafter. To the north, India has been similarly pursuing a strategy of connecting to Central Asia more effectively and this has taken the form of structured engagements across multiple domains, Jaishankar said.

“These concentric circles of priority give you a conceptual sense of Indian diplomacy and one that we have pursued very assiduously over the last decade. But at a higher level, we are also practising the approach of engaging all significant centres of power, such multi-alignment reflects the reality of multipolarity,” he added.

“When India looks at other regions be it Africa, the Pacific or Latin America much of what is happening can be explained as the emergence of India’s potential global footprint. In many cases, it results from autonomous forces, such as business or mobility. In others, it is part of a more considered strategy of deeper engagement. As an illustration, in recent years, we have opened 18 new embassies in Africa alone. Our development partnership today covers 78 countries and is reflected in almost 600 projects globally.” (ANI)

Befitting Answer On May 10: Modi

People Of K’taka Will Give Befitting Answer On May 10: Modi

Coming down heavily on Congress for drawing parallels between a snake and Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister on Sunday said that the people of Karnataka will give the party a “befitting answer” in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, in an election rally in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi on Thursday, said, “PM Modi is like a ‘poisonous snake’, you might think it’s poison or not. If you lick it, you’re dead.”
Lashing out at Congress over the remark, PM Modi said, “Today when I am fighting against corruption, Congress is disturbed the most. Congress is now threatening. They say ‘Modi teri kabra khudegi’. Congress’ topic in Karnataka elections is snake’s poison. They are comparing me with snake and seeking votes from people. For me, people of the country are a form of Lord Shiva. I accept being the snake on the neck of god-like public. The people of Karnataka will give them a befitting answer on May 10.”

PM Modi launched a scathing attack on Congress terming the party as an “outdated engine” and said that it halts development and gives fakes guarantees.

“Congress is an ‘outdated engine’. Development halted due to them. Congress has a bundle of fake guarantees. They don’t fulfil any promise made to the public. ‘Unfulfilled guarantees’ are their record. They betrayed the public, but BJP fulfilled all the guarantees by doing several development works,” PM Modi said while addressing a public meeting here.

Notably, Congress has promised a number of guarantees to the people of Karnataka ahead of the state Assembly polls slated on May 10, including 200 units of free electricity.

The Prime Minister further said that corruption has always prospered under Congress and said that only the BJP can act against corruption.

“Congress has a reputation of 85 per cent commission. People have no faith in their govt. One of their Prime Ministers said that he sends Rupee 1 but 15 paise reach the ground. Congress has always done appeasement politics. BJP is not for appeasement but for satisfaction. Congress has always grown under corruption. Only BJP can take immediate action on corruption,” he said.

“Congress has done nothing for the farmers. They made promises to them but gave nothing to them. It was BJP who gave Rs 2.5 lakh cr to them (farmers) in their accounts. They always neglected the poor. We are constantly working for the development of the farmers,” he added.

Hitting out at Congress and JDS which are contesting the elections separately, PM Modi said that both the parties are the “biggest hindrance” in the development work and added that the unstable government cannot have a “vision”.

“Unstable governments can’t have a vision. During the Congress regime, the world was hopeless of India, but as soon as BJP came to power, the world now looked up to India as a bright spot. Karnataka has decided to elect BJP. The double-engine govt is very important in the state for continuous development. During Congress and JDS rule the development pace slowed down,” he said.

PM Modi said that Karnataka has to be saved from the “corrupt government of Congress and JDS”.

“Today’s gathering will make Congress and JDS lose sleep. Both parties are the biggest hindrance in the process of development. The public has clean-bowled them. We have to save the people of Karnataka from the corrupt govt of Congress and JDS,” he said.

The Prime Minister has hit the ground to campaign for the BJP in the last leg of the campaigning, in which he is conducting a number of poll rallies and roadshows to turn the tide in favour of the party, in what is expected to be a tripartite contest among BJP, Congress and JDS.

Karnataka will go to Assembly polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13. (ANI)

100th episode of 'Mann Ki Baat'

Madhuri, Shahid, Rohit Laud ‘Mann Ki Baat’ 100th Episode

Several Bollywood celebs like Madhuri Dixit, Shahid Kapoor and Rohit Shetty attended the screening of PM Modi’s 100th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, actor Madhuri Dixit said, “He (PM Modi) is taking out time to understand the problems of common people. This is amazing. He is reaching out to people in small towns and villages who are doing such good work and people are not aware of it. So he is bringing such people in front of all the citizens and they are getting global recognition which is amazing. I’m sure it’s going to inspire a lot of youngsters.”
Actor Shahid Kapoor said, “Modi ji wanted to stay connected with the people, I think that’s the sign of a great leader. All the greatest leaders in history, whether it be Kings or Prime Ministers have always stayed connected to the people. There cannot be a deeper connection than this, to be able to speak your mind and listen to people’s words, to be able to convey your words to them. I felt very fortunate that I was invited here. It’s a privilege to be here.”

Director and producer Rohit Shetty said, “I felt inspired, if one leader can show us the right path, then there is nothing impossible. When I was watching I felt how lucky we are that we have such an inspirational leader whom people listen to, from whom they are inspired, which is very rare.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the nation in the historic 100th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ and said that his radio programme is the “Mann Ki Baat” of millions of Indians and an expression of their emotions.

The Prime Minister said he received thousands of letters and messages from the people and was “swept away by emotions” while reading them. He said that the people of the country have to be congratulated for the 100th episode of his monthly radio programme that began on October 3, 2014.

“Today is the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat. I have got thousands of letters, lakhs of messages. I have tried to go through more and more of them. I got emotional while reading your letters on many occasions, was swept away by emotions, and then held myself. You have congratulated me on the 100th episode of Mann Ki Baat, but all the listeners, our countrymen deserve to be congratulated. Mann Ki Baat is the ‘Mann Ki Baat of millions of Indians and the expression of their emotions,” PM Modi said.

The programme, which started on October 3, 2014, has become a key pillar of the government’s citizen-outreach programme addressing multiple social groups such as women, youth, and farmers and has spurred community action. (ANI)

The Udan Pari, or Flying Fairy, of Indian Sports Has Feet of Clay

India’s Sprint Queen, PT Usha, has feet of clay

Last year, India’s most celebrated woman athlete, P.T. Usha was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. A veteran sprinter, Usha has to her credit four Asian gold medals and 7 silver medals and is often called the “Queen of Indian Track and Field”. Last week, Usha came out in defence of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, popularly known as Brij Bhushan. Bhushan, a member of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and member of Parliament, is facing multiple accusations of sexual harassment and physical aggression.

Since January this year, Indian wrestlers have been protesting against the 66-year-old Bhusan for his alleged misbehaviour and sexual harassment of women wrestlers. The protesters have demanded his arrest and ouster from his official position. To be sure,  over the years there have been several other allegations against Bhushan: he has confessed to a murder; he was involved in the demolitions of the Babri Masjid; he has been caught on camera slapping a wrestler; and he is believed to have had connections with the underworld and was charged in 1992 for helping the Dawood Ibrahim gang in organising a shoot at an Indian hospital.

When the latest controversy surrounding him erupted, and wrestlers and other sportspersons, including Olympians, organised morchas and assemblies in the capital, instead of coming out in support of those who were protesting, India’s Sprint Queen Usha chose to take a surprising line: she said that the agitations against him were “not good for the country’s image” and that those who were taking up the cause of women wrestlers were “indisciplined”.

Patronage does that to some people. When the ruling regime rewards you with a position of prestige–in the 58-year-old Usha’s case, it was the trappings of a Rajya Sabha membership–it can create a sense of pathetic obeisance to your patron and lead to loss of sensibilities. Unfortunately, Usha, who is also the chief of the Indian Olympics Association, has fallen victim to that disgusting syndrome.

To be sure, three months ago, India’s sports ministry constituted a committee, headed by boxing star Mary Kom, to examine the charges against Bhushan but till now the committee has not returned with any report or observations. Incidentally, Kom, 40, has also served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2016 to 2022. She was also nominated to the upper house by the ruling regime.

The politics of patronage is an odious thing. In India, it afflicts people from all walks of life. Every year before the run-up to the national Padma awards begins there is hectic lobbying that many resort to. As is the case when it comes to lobbying for the 12 nominations to the Rajya Sabha. With few exceptions, in most cases the nominees are decided by the ruling regime on political considerations and, also in most cases, those who accept the nominations appear to also compromise with their vertebrae: like Usha, they become spineless.

Meanwhile, even as a police case has been filed against Bhushan, the WFI chief is adamant and insists that he is innocent. He has said that he will cooperate but is not willing to face investigations as a criminal. The controversy surrounding him rages on.

As defence ministers meet, India’s border spat with China continues

Last week, India’s defence minister Rajnath Singh met with his Chinese counterpart General Li Shangfu and emphasised that China had violated the terms of existing agreements between the two countries in the border row in eastern Ladakh. China claims large tracts that India insists belong to it and recently a list of locations in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh that were renamed in Chinese by China were revealed.

The Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) have had 18 rounds of talks to ease tensions along LAC in the region but a resolution has remained elusive. The latest border row between the two countries has been on for three years.

Meanwhile, in response to India’s allegations of violations, China has stated that the situation along the Line of Actual Control, a notional demarcation line that separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory in the Sino-Indian border dispute, remained “stable”.

In lay terms, the talks between the two defence ministers have failed to unlock the stalemate over the border dispute.

Politicising the rescue of Indians stranded in Sudan

When the nationals of a country are caught up and stranded in another country because of civil strife or war in that foreign location, it is the onus of their government to arrange means of repatriating them. India has done the same. When civil war erupted in the north-east African nation of Sudan with anti-government militia clashing with the Sudanese army, thousands of Indians were stranded there facing huge risks to their lives. Accordingly, the Indian government sprang into action and launched an operation, coordinated between the government and the Indian embassy, which rescued stranded Indians and repatriated them back to India.

The action was laudable and on point. However, it was named Operation Kaveri, a reference to the major river in southern India that flows through the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The naming of the rescue operation, believed to be done at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is of significance.

Many of the stranded Indians in Sudan are originally from the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu where the River Kaveri is revered and worshipped. In these states, it is a sacred river that is worshipped as the Goddess Kaveriamma (Mother Cauvery and is considered to be among the seven holy rivers of India. It is extensively used for agriculture in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Cut now to politics. On May 10, Karnataka will hold its assembly elections. Opposition parties have alleged that naming the Sudan operation after the sacred river is aimed at generating positive sentiment for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which wants to fare well in the polls in order to build an inroad into southern states where its clout and influence is poor. The Congress has called it a “low-blow tactic” by the BJP, while the latter has countered it by citing that the code name for the operation notes the sacredness of the river. When the government took action to repatriate Indians stranded in Ukraine, it called it Operation Ganga.

Meanwhile, India has successfully moved approximately 1,700 to 2,000 Indian nationals out of the conflict zones in Sudan.

Another film; another controversy

The trailer of the film, Kerala Story, by film producer, Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has led to an eruption of controversy. The film, which is to be released on May 5, is believed to be about the story of how women from the Indian state of Kerala were duped and trafficked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in the strife-ridden region of Syria.

The film purportedly shows how “Love Jihad” was used to lure more than 30,000 women from Kerala by the ISIS. “Love Jihad” is a term that originated in India, referring to an alleged practice of Muslim men targeting non-Muslim women for conversion to Islam through seduction, love, and marriage. The term is not recognised as a legal or sociological concept in India, and the claims of its existence are considered controversial and contested.

The film’s teaser was released last November but in a complaint filed by a journalist based in Chennai, it has been alleged that the film depicts Kerala as a “terror-supporting state” and that it undermines India’s intelligence agencies. Different political parties have also waded into the controversy and fear that its release could spark communal tensions. Hindu hardliners, on the other hand, have taken to social media and other platforms in support of the film.

Not long ago, another film, The Kashmir Files, directed by Vivek Agnihotri, generated controversy and criticism, with some accusing it of being politically motivated and promoting a divisive narrative. One of the main criticisms of the film is that it portrays the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits as a result of Muslim fundamentalism and terrorism, while downplaying the role of the Indian government and security forces in the displacement. Critics argue that the film’s portrayal of the situation is one-sided and ignores the complex political and historical factors that led to the exodus.

Let them eat Chocolate?

Days before his formal coronation on May 6, a life-sized bust of King Charles has been made from more than 17 litres of melted chocolates. The bust weighs 23 kg and took four weeks to make. It will be on display in the town of Slough, bordering Greater London.

There is no information, though, about what will eventually happen to the chocolate bust made by Mars, the confectionery company.

The idea of making Chocolate Charles, although not associated with the Palace or the monarch in any way, recalls the old story about the phrase “let them eat cake”, which is often attributed to Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France during the French Revolution. The story goes that when she was told that the people of France had no bread to eat, she callously responded, “Let them eat cake.”

With the British economy under stress–high inflation, shortages of food and energy in the aftermath of Brexit, and several unseemly political controversies–a bust of its king made out of chocolates could seem a tad ironic, or even darkly surreal.

Salman on parenthood

Was Planning For A Child: Salman On Parenthood, Marriage

Actor Salman Khan’s love for kids is known to all. He often spends time with his nieces and nephews. Surprisingly, the ‘Dabangg’ star once thought about having a child of his own.

Recently, when the Bhaijaan was asked about his marriage plans at India TV’s show ‘Aap ki Adalat’, he said, “That was the plan. It wasn’t for a daughter-in-law, it was for a child. But according to the Indian laws, it’s not possible. Now we’ll see what to do, how to do it.”
And we all know how much Salman loves kids and bonds with them very well.

And we have seen how he is fond of his nephew Ahil Sharma and often spends time with him.

When asked about the day Salman questioned Karan Johar about marriage but he is now a father of two, to which Salman responded, “That’s what I was trying to do. But, that law may have changed, so let’s see. I am very fond of children. We have the whole district, the whole village. But my kid’s mother will be my wife.”

Meanwhile, on the work front, Salman was recently seen in the action entertainer film ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ which performed well at the box office despite getting negative reviews from the critics.

Helmed by Farhad Samji, the film also stars actors Pooja Hegde, Shehnaaz Gill, Palak Tiwari, Sidharth Nigam, Venkatesh Daggubati, Bhumika Chawla, Raghav Juyal and Jassie Gill in pivotal roles.

Salman will be next seen in the upcoming action thriller film ‘Tiger 3’ opposite actor Katrina Kaif. The film is all set to hit the theatres on the occasion of Diwali 2023. (ANI)

Salman on death threat

‘Now So Many Guns Around Me’: Salman On Death Threat

Salman Khan, who has been receiving death threats and is on the target list of gangsters, finally shared his experience and how he is dealing with it.

The ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ actor has been provided with Y+ category security by the Mumbai Police amid the death threat.
Salman shared the experience at India TV’s show ‘Aap ki Adalat’ that, “Security is better than insecurity. Yes security is there. Now it is not possible to ride a bicycle on the road and go alone anywhere. And more than that, now I have this problem that when I am in traffic, then there is so much security, vehicles creating inconvenience to other people. They also give me a look. And my poor fans. There is a serious threat that’s why there is security.”

He added, “I am doing whatever I have been told. There is a dialogue ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ ‘they have to be lucky 100 times, I have to be lucky once’. So, I got to be very careful.”

Salman continued, “I am going everywhere with full security. I know whatever is going to happen will happen no matter what you do. I believe that (points towards god) that he is there. It is not that I will start roaming freely, it is not like that. Now there are so many Shera’s around me, so many guns are going around with me that I am myself scared these days.”

Following the death threat, few days ago, a minor was arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly threatening to kill Salman during a phone call.

Mumbai Police said that a threat call was made to the Mumbai Police control room on April 10. The caller, who identified himself as Rockey Bhai from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, said he was a Gau Rakshak (cow-vigilante). The caller threatened to “eliminate” Salman Khan on April 30.

Mumbai Police added revealed the caller was found to be a minor. “As of now, we don’t think the call should be taken seriously. But we are probing why the minor behaved in such a way,” an officer said.

On March 26, one person identified as Dhakad Ram, a resident of Luni in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district, was arrested for sending a threat mail to Salman. He was apprehended and taken into custody.

A case was registered at Bandra police station. The accused, in his mail, alleged that the superstar will meet the same fate as “Sidhu Moosewala.”

“A case has registered at Bandra police station with regard to emailed threats to kill Salman Khan. In a joint operation, Mumbai Police and Luni police teams caught the accused, Dhakad Ram, a resident of Luni in Jodhpur district,” Ishwar Chand Pareek, an officer at Luni police station of Jodhpur told ANI earlier.

Khan has been provided with Y+ category security by the Mumbai police after assessing threat perceptions. The Maharashtra government assigned security escorts to the superstar after the actor received a threat letter from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. (ANI)
