ISIS Claims Responsibility For Vienna Terror Attacks

Barely 24 hours after the terror attack in the heart of Vienna, the Islamic State claimed responsibility, calling the shooter a “soldier of the caliphate”, according to a statement translated by the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online extremist messaging, as quoted in the New York Times on Tuesday.

The man who opened fire in central Vienna on Monday while armed has been identified as a 20-year-old Austrian citizen who had sought to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, Austria’s Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said. The shooter was known to be armed with an automatic rifle, a pistol, and a machete and was wearing a fake explosive device.

Four were killed while 22 people were injured in the terrorist attack that shook the Austrian capital on Monday.

“The evidence gathered so far showed no indication that others were involved. The attacker, an Austrian who also has citizenship from North Macedonia, was identified as Kujtim Fejzulai by officials and his former lawyer, Nikolaus Rast,” Nehammer was quoted as saying by the New York Times.

“The suspect had been arrested once before after trying to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State. The man was sentenced to 22 months in prison for that attempt but was released early, raising questions about how someone on the radar of the authorities had managed to carry out such an attack,” Nehammer added. Economy, Racial Equality Vital Issues, Says Exit Poll

Economic problems and racial inequality are the most important issues for US voters, while the COVID-19 pandemic comes only third, according to an exit poll in the ongoing US presidential election.

As many as one-third of respondents primarily focus on the economic situation, while one-fifth view racial inequality as the main issue of the presidential elections, CNN reported.

As per the poll, the COVID-19 pandemic is the foremost issue for only one out of six US citizens despite it being the worst-affected country with over 9,365,360 coronavirus cases and 232,484 deaths due to the virus.

Eleven per cent of respondents feel crime and safety, along with health care are a matter of concern.

According to the poll conducted by CNN, a total of 51 per cent of voters are negatively assessing the country’s efforts to fight the pandemic, whereas 48 per cent share the opposite outlook. Moreover, for 52 per cent of respondents, it is more important to stop the spread of the virus than to protect the economy.

A total of 46 per cent are confident that their votes will be accurately counted while only 12 per cent of respondents expressed doubts about the fairness of ballot count.

The poll was conducted among 7,774 voters at 115 polling locations as well as 4,919 early and absentee voters by phone.

Some 239 million people are eligible to vote this year. The mail-in ballots could take days to be counted – meaning a winner might not be declared in the hours after polls close on Tuesday. (ANI)

Joe Biden In Delhi

‘No Bias Towards Republican, Democrat States If Elected’

Amid the ongoing election day in the United States, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Tuesday promised that if he gets elected he would not differentiate between the Democrat and Republican states.

“I promise you this, as I’m running as a proud Democrat if you elect me, I’m going to be an American President, there will be no red states or blue states just the United States of America,” Biden said while addressing his supporters in Philadelphia.

Addressing the magnitude of the novel coronavirus, he assured people that the nation would overcome the pandemic by making “smart moves”.

“We have an enormous opportunity as a country. Not only we’re going to be able to overcome this virus by taking some smart moves but we’re going to rebuild the middle class. It built this country and Unions built the middle class,” he said.

Biden further said, “We are going to have more people vote in this election than at any time in US history.”

“The president [Donald Trump] is got a lot of things backwards. He thinks that he can decide that who gets to vote but guess what, the people are going to decide who gets to be president,” he added.

He urged the people of the US to choose hope over fear during the ongoing election day. “We have to remember who we are. This is the United States of America. Anybody who knows Donald Trump, we have to let him know who we are. We choose hope over fear, we choose truth over a lie, and we choose science over fiction.”

“When was the last time that you ever heard, when a US President shows up and the whole UN laughs at him. This has not happened before. Or when he appears at the NATO meeting, people make fun of him,” he added.

The Democratic nominee also promised to accept a mistake if he’ll commit one. “I promise you I am going to take responsibility. If I’ll make a mistake I’ll admit it.”

Over 100 million people have already voted and some states, such as Pennsylvania, will report the in-person vote count before moving through the absentee ballots.

Some 239 million people are eligible to vote this year. The mail-in ballots could take days to be counted – meaning a winner might not be declared in the hours after polls close on Tuesday. (ANI)

Surveillance Beefed Up At Streets Near White House

Crews of US law enforcement officers are monitoring the current situation on the streets surrounding the White House in Washington, which was fenced off ahead of the election day, a Sputnik correspondent at the scene reports.

Several dozen law enforcement officers have been dispatched to the streets adjacent to the White House. Many civilians, some with banners and posters, have taken to the streets of the US capital as voting in the presidential election continues.

The police crews have, at the present time, not intervened to break up any activity, according to the correspondent.

A large non-scalable fence was erected around the perimeter of the White House ahead of Election Day.

Parking restrictions were also brought into force in Washington, and the local authorities are prepared to temporarily close streets should protest break out.

Polling stations across the United States are set to close on Tuesday evening as Democratic candidate Joe Biden faces off against his Republican counterpart and incumbent president, Donald Trump.

Many retailers in downtown Washington have boarded up their premises, fearing that violence may break out in the city as the election results are announced. (ANI/Sputnik)

Bernie Calls For Reforms To Prevent Voter Suppression

US Senator Bernie Sanders on Tuesday called on US Congress to introduce reforms to prevent voters from being suppressed in future elections.

“If this campaign has shown us anything it is that Congress must pass real election reform. No more voter suppression. No more five-hour waiting lines to vote. No more threats to not count mail-in ballots. We must make it easier for people to vote, not harder,” Sanders wrote on Twitter.

Sanders’ comments come as over 100 million voters have voted in the 2020 presidential election.

His statement comes in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the mail-in voting process, saying that it could be subject to fraudulent activity.

The Republican party in both Pennsylvania and Nevada launched attempts to interfere in the postal balloting process in the run-up to election day, Sputnik reported.

Moreover, a judge in the state of Nevada on Monday had denied a bid to temporarily halt the counting of mail-in ballots in Clark County.

Similarly, an attempt to eliminate the three-day deadline extension in Pennsylvania for the receipt of mail-in ballots was also denied, this time by the Supreme Court. (ANI)

Pak Sees Sindh, Baloch As Threat To Its Identity: Haqqani

Former Pakistan Ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani said that Pakistan does not want to acknowledge Sindh and Balochistan as they view those who want to maintain their identity as a threat to the nation.

“Sindh has a history that dates back several centuries — so does Balochistan. Instead of acknowledging that there is a new state but old nations live in it, the state of Pakistan has decided that it does not want to acknowledge the existence of old nations and nationalities that constitute contemporary Pakistan,” he said at the 32nd International Conference on Sindh on Sunday.

The former Pakistani ambassador added that Islamabad’s lack of acknowledgment creates a problem for those who “want to maintain their identity” as Sindhis, Pashtuns, Punjabis, Baloch are seen as a threat.

“The state of Pakistan is an authoritarian state and a national security state. The problem with the ideological construct of the state is that anybody who has a question or does not toe the line is seen as threatening the state. The whole notion of the state is based on a historical accident,” he added.

Haqqani said that the “proud history” of Sindh and Balochistan is not being taught in Pakistan and added that what is going on in Pakistan is an “attempt to eradicate identity”. “All the divisive elements, human rights violations and efforts to try and subjugate Sindh economically and politically are a part of a big project which is trying to project an ideology that is not organic,” he added.

Enforced disappearances of hundreds of Sindhis have been a cause of concern for the Sindhi community. While interacting with the media recently, some of the victims’ families narrated how they were brutally thrashed before their respective members were forcibly taken away.

Frequent protests are being held in different cities and towns of Sindh province to highlight the atrocities committed by the security agencies in the knowledge of the federal government. (ANI)

J&K Student Pushes Kashmiri Language With Sufi Poetry

Saadath Mohi-ud-din Bhat, a medical student from South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, is an inspiration to many.

Bhat has started a podcast titled “Aao Unhe Yaad Karai,” which aims at promoting the Kashmiri language and Sufi poetry.

“I am also writing a poetry book which will be published soon. The aim is to preserve our rich language and Sufi culture and draw the attention of people, especially youth, towards it,” he said.

The medical student said that the youth of Kashmir use the Kashmiri language less nowadays.

“There is no one who has any interest in our mother tongue. When we are shying away from our own language, protecting our culture seems to be difficult. There will be no traces of our own language and culture if this approach continues. That is why I am working to preserve the language and poetry and promote it among people,” he said.

Bhat said his family is also supportive of his work and feels proud of his achievements.

His father Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Bhat said, “When I see his poetry, I feel proud. He has always been a good student, but for a long time, he has been trying to put the Kashmiri language at the forefront. People sometimes have an inferiority complex if they speak in Kashmiri and Sadat though poetry is encouraging people to speak the language.” (ANI)

The first phase of Malabar naval exercise commenced off Vishakhapatnam in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday with participation by Indian Navy (IN), United States Navy (USN), Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF), and Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

The 24th edition of the Malabar naval exercise is scheduled in two phases this month. It will display “high-levels of synergy and coordination” based on their shared values and commitment to an open, inclusive Indo-Pacific and a rules-based international order.

It is for first time in more than a decade that the exercise will see the participation of all four Quad countries. Australia is taking part in the exercise after 2007.

The first phase of the exercise will continue till November 6 and will witness complex and advanced naval exercises including surface, anti-submarine and anti-air warfare operations, cross deck flying, seamanship evolutions and weapon firing exercises.

The first phase of Malabar 20 will witness the participation of Indian Navy units with United States Ship (USS) John S McCain (guided-missile destroyer), Her Majesty’s Australian Ship (HMAS) Ballarat (long range frigates) with integral MH-60 helicopter and Japan Maritime Self Defence Ship (JMSDF) Onami (destroyer) with integral SH-60 helicopter.

The Indian Navy participation in phase one is being led by Rear Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.

Indian Navy units participating in the exercise include destroyer Ranvijay, frigate Shivalik, offshore patrol vessel Sukanya, fleet support ship Shakti and submarine Sindhuraj.

In addition, advanced jet trainer Hawk, long-range maritime patrol aircraft P-8I, Dornier maritime patrol aircraft and helicopters will also be participating in the exercise.

The exercise, being conducted as a “non-contact, at sea only” in view of COVID-19 pandemic, will showcase the “high-levels of synergy and coordination between the friendly navies, which is based on their shared values and commitment to an open, inclusive Indo-Pacific and a rules-based international order”, a Defence Ministry release had said on Monday.

Malabar exercises commenced in 1992 as a bilateral IN-USN exercise. JMSDF joined Malabar in 2015. The second phase of Malabar 20 is scheduled to be conducted in the Arabian Sea in mid-November 2020.

The exercise comes amid border tensions between India and China. The US is among countries that have expressed concern over attempts of China to flex military muscle in the neigbhourhood. (ANI)
