Chidambaram Takes A Dig At Kant: Too Much Bureaucracy

Taking a veiled dig at NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant’s reported comments on the issue of democracy, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Friday said there is too much “bureaucracy” in the country.

“There is too much democracy, laments a senior bureaucrat. There is too much bureaucracy, says an anguished democrat,” said Chidambaram in a tweet.

In a series of tweets, he slammed the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government for making a law on ‘love jihad’ and asserted that the foundation of a new Parliament building was laid on the ‘ruins of a liberal democracy’.

“The foundation for a new Parliament building was laid on the ruins of a liberal democracy,” said tweeted lead by tweet demanding ‘Nobel Prizes’ for UP government in the field of Literature (fiction) and Peace.

“UP’s creativity deserves two Nobel Prizes — for Literature (fiction) and Peace,” he tweeted.

“UP is the most creative state in law-making and in the application of the law. Who else could have invented a crime called ‘love jihad’?” the Congress leader asked in another tweet.

Chidambaram alleged that Yogi Adityanath-led state government is misusing the new law.

“UP is more creative in the application of the law. Look at three examples: a) an FIR is filed without any complaint; b) an FIR is immediately followed by a non-bailable warrant and a threat to seize the property; and c) an arrest is made without an FIR,” said the senior politician. (ANI)

Allowing Surgery To Ayurved Doctors Will Endanger Lives: IMA

By Joymala Bagchi

Indian Medical Association (IMA) observed a nationwide no-demonstration strike on Friday to oppose the central government’s move to allow Ayurveda doctors to perform surgery.

Demanding withdrawal of the notification allowing Ayurveda postgraduates to perform modern medicine surgery, the IMA called for the withdrawal of all non-essential non-COVID services between 6 am and 6 pm today.

Dr Rajan Sharma, national president of IMA, said that allowing Ayurveda postgraduates to perform surgery is a “blatant attempt” to “corrupt” the healthcare system of the country.

“It takes years and years to become a doctor. With mixopaths what are we heading for? It’s a failure when nations compromise with health,” said Dr Sharma.

He stated that the IMA is not against “any sort of pathy”, but the mixing up of disciplines.

“We are not against any sort of pathy be it Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy. We are proud of our national heritage and richness but let it coexist with modern medicine. All we demand is not to mix the disciplines. It will also mean the end of pure Ayurveda,” he added.

The IMA reiterated that it has taken 200 years of medical research to reach modern medical capabilities, where medicines are controlled and double controlled and are research-oriented.

Doctors across the country are observing the strike by wearing a black ribbon as a mark of protest while on duty.

The protesting doctors said that surgery is teamwork where preoperative assessment, intra-op, anaesthetist, post-operative care, and complications are vital aspects.

The IMA said the agitation is likely to intensify in the coming weeks if the government doesn’t take back the notification. (ANI)

After Pak Elephant, Cher To Save Thailand’s Last Gorilla

After rescuing “the world’s loneliest elephant” from Pakistan, American singer Cher is now attempting to rehome Bua Noi, a gorilla who has spent the last 30 years behind bars above a Bangkok shopping mall.

According to animal rights group PETA Asia, Bua Noi was captured as a baby and taken to Pata Zoo, a small rooftop zoo, which has imprisoned animals in “abysmal conditions” since the 1980s, while numerous of the establishment on TripAdvisor refer to the zoo as an “animal hell,” reported Washington Post.

She is the only gorilla in Thailand after her mate died many years ago.

Pata Zoo has also been branded as ‘one of the saddest places in the world’ by the animal organisation, which called for the facility to be closed down after an investigation this year found the animals languishing in concrete cells with no physical or mental stimulation.

On December 5, Cher wrote to Thailand’s environment minister, Varawut Silpa-archa, and asked him to help her with her mission to release the gorilla.

In the document, she expressed deep concern over the living conditions of the gorilla and other animals being kept in the zoo, and said that her animal charity organisation – Free The Wild – has teamed up with Aspinall Foundation, a British charity for wildlife conservation, to secure a sanctuary for the animals at no expense to the zoo’s owner or the Thai government.

The singer said that the gorilla would be moved to a better and peaceful environment in Congo, where he can socialise with other primates, once granted permission to relocate.

UK media reported that in response to Cher’s request, Silpa-archa said that the zoo was devising a plan to relocate the animals and that the living conditions of Bua Noi were not forgotten by Thai officials.

“I, myself as minister in charge of wildlife conservation, have given instruction to the relevant agencies in order to find the best solution for a better life of Bua Noi,” he said.

Cher also accused the zoo owner Kanit Sermsirimongkol of profiting at the expense of animals trapped in captivity, while the owner maintained that relocating the gorilla would be a “difficult task”, as animals are under threat from diseases like AIDS, Ebola, as well as civil wars and poachers.

Meanwhile, the organisation Free Gorilla has been spending years campaigning for the zoo to be closed, saying that the lack of visitors due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic will make the animals feel even more isolated, reported Washington Post.

On its website, the group says its mission is for all 200 animals at the Bangkok zoo to be relocated.

Furthermore, a petition launched by the foundation calling on authorities not to renew the zoo’s license garnered more than 125,000 signatures.

This happens after Cher’s efforts helped Kaavan, known as the ‘world’s loneliest elephant’ relocate to a new home in Cambodia last month.

In May, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) ruled that the animals kept in Marghazar Zoo were kept in cruel conditions and the zoo should be closed.

The unhappy elephant was also diagnosed as emotionally and physically unstable, while veterinarians have said that the elephant was malnourished. (ANI)

Shimla Horse Owners Face Hardships As Tourists Stay Away

The business of horse owners in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla has been badly hit amid the COVID-19 pandemic, while they still hope for the tourists to arrive after recent snowfall in the region.

“This year has been really tough for all of us due to the pandemic. We are not having a good business as locals and tourists are not coming here. Very few people can be seen here, one horse owner is earning nearly Rs 300 to Rs 400. However, over Rs 500 is required to feed one horse here,” said a local horseman Mushtaq.

“We were expecting good business during snowfall but the COVID-19 has played spoilsport,” he added.

For over eight months now horse owners here have been jobless. The tourists have not entered the state during the peak tourist season this year and now the COVID-19 pandemic graph in the state and the capital city have started rising with rapid speed.

The tourism sector, which is a major source of employment, has been badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many people like the horse owners or ‘Ghodewalas’ of Shimla struggling to survive.

In the usual peak season, hundreds of people used to come to for a horse ride daily here in the beautiful historic town. Horse owners are disappointed as they neither have any business nor any job for the future amid the pandemic.

“This year we are expecting a good snowfall and we hope our business starts on a good note again,” said Sher Deen another horseman. (ANI)

Maryam Moves Court Against Seizure Of Father’s Assets

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz on Thursday approached an Islamabad accountability court against the seizure of her father Nawaz Sharif’s property in the Toshakhana reference.

Maryam filed an application in the court on behalf of her father, and after an initial hearing, Judge Syed Asghar Ali issued notices to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and others to submit their response to the application by December 16, reported ARY News.

Sharif’s seized house in Murree is registered in the name of his late wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, the application stated, adding it was purchased before the date mentioned in the reference.

According to ARY News, the house was divided among the family members after her death and a court had already given a verdict regarding the division, the application said.

Maryam pleaded with the court to set aside the order regarding the seizure of the house.

On June 11, a non-bailable arrest warrant for Nawaz was issued by an accountability court in the Toshakhana reference.

According to the accountability bureau, Zardari and Sharif obtained cars from the Toshakana by paying 15 per cent of the cars’ price.

The bureau further alleged that former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani facilitated former President Asif Ali Zardari and Nawaz in this regard.

Zardari had paid only 15 per cent of the total cost of the cars through fake accounts, according to NAB. He also received the cars as a gift from Libya and the UAE when he was president and used them for his personal use instead of depositing them in the treasury, the anti-graft body had alleged.

The Toshakhana (gift depository) gift from any country to the head of the state remains the property of the government unless sold at an open auction. Rules allow officials to retain gifts with a market value of less than Rs 10,000 without paying anything. (ANI)
