China’s Dam On Brahmputra Risks Water War With India

China’s plan to dam the Yarlung Zangbao, the world’s highest river, threatens to spark conflict with downstream India, reported Asia Times.

China is planning to construct a mega-dam on the Yarlung Zangbao River, which flows through Tibet and eventually becomes the Brahmaputra when it enters India.

The Yarlung Zangbao Dam plan is moving ahead without China discussing or entering into water-sharing agreements with downstream India or Bangladesh.

Bangladesh, which maintains cordial relations with China, too protested over the Yarlung Zangbao Dam, reported Asia Times.

Bertil Linter in an opinion piece in Asia Times wrote that precise technical details regarding the mega-dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River are lacking, but regional media reports indicate it will likely dwarf the massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River and generate three times as much electricity for distribution in China.

Both Brahmaputra and the glaciers that feed Ganga originate in China. As an upstream riparian region, China maintains an advantageous position and can build infrastructure to intentionally prevent water from flowing downstream.

Owing to previous tendencies where the Chinese have been reluctant to provide details of its hydropower projects, there is a trust deficit between the two neighbours.

China’s dam-building and water division plans along the Brahmaputra (called Yarlung Zangbao in China) is a source of tension between the two neighbours.

Not only India but other nations of Southeast Asia are affected due to China’s lack of consultations with downstream neighbours and has sparked controversy with them.

China has built eleven mega-dams on the Mekong River, causing water levels there to fluctuate widely without prior notice in Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, reported Asia Times.

As per reports, in late December, China reduced water discharge from a dam to test its equipment near the town of Jinghong in southern Yunnan province from 1,904 cubic meters to 1,000 cubic meters per second.

It took almost a week for China to inform the downstream countries of the move, which wasn’t enough time for downstream countries to prepare, resulting in disruptions in shipping and commerce. Water levels had already dropped a meter at Thailand’s Chiang Saen, where the Mekong forms the border with Laos, wrote Linter.

China’s announcement was made only after the Washington-based Stimson Center’s Southeast Asia Program’s Mekong Dam Monitor, which uses satellite imagery to keep tabs on water levels along the river, notified the Mekong River Commission, a regional cooperation organization of which China is not a member.

Some analysts believe China is using its leverage over water flows as a stick to win concessions from downstream Southeast Asian states on other issues, including in regard to its Belt and Road Initiative.

China is using the same tactics with India with its Yarlung Zangbao Dam designs. Earlier, China clashed with India in Ladakh in June last year and a 2017 border stand-off near the border with Bhutan has angered both nations over China’s unilaterally decided hydroelectric power scheme.

The Himalayan water war will affect India and Bangladesh as both rely on the Brahmaputra’s water for agriculture. Both India and Bangladesh worry that these dams will give Beijing the ability to divert or store water in times of political crisis.

Everyday policy concerns like water sharing and usage often receive less attention, are combined with larger security or border concerns, or are dealt with only when natural disasters occur. Yet water politics has far-reaching consequences for the prosperity and security of countries. (ANI)

Taiwan Thanks US For Support Against China’s Coercion

After the United States expressed plans to strengthen ties with Taiwan under the Biden administration, Taipei on Sunday expressed gratitude to the US for its commitment of “rock-solid support” against China’s coercion.

“We sincerely thank US State Department for its rock-solid support of democratic of Taiwan in the face of Beijing’s ongoing coercion. Based on shared values and interests, we are committed to our partnership with the United States in furthering peace and stability in the Indo Pacific,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan said in a tweet amid Beijing’s growing belligerence.

Hours after several Chinese warplanes intruded into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone, the US noted with concern the pattern of ongoing Chinese attempts to intimidate its neighbours and urged Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic and economic pressure against Taipei.

The US State Department on Saturday said that Washington will stand with friends and allies to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values in the Indo-Pacific region.

The flight by the Chinese bombers and fighters on Saturday came just days after Joe Biden assumed the US presidency. Taiwan Defense Ministry said that Taiwan’s Air Force scrambled fighter jets as 13 Chinese warplanes intruded into Taiwan’s southwest air defence identification zone (ADIZ), Focus Taiwan reported.

The planes involved were a Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft, eight Xian H-6K bombers and four Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, the MND said.

“The United States notes with concern the pattern of ongoing PRC attempts to intimidate its neighbours, including Taiwan. We urge Beijing to cease its military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan and instead engage in meaningful dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected representatives,” the State Department statement read.

The US’ commitment to Taiwan is rock-solid and contributes to the maintenance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and within the region, the statement said.

“We will stand with friends and allies to advance our shared prosperity, security, and values in the Indo-Pacific region — and that includes deepening our ties with democratic Taiwan. The United States will continue to support a peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues, consistent with the wishes and best interests of the people of Taiwan. The United States maintains its longstanding commitments as outlined in the Three Communiques, the Taiwan Relations Act, and the Six Assurances. We will continue to assist Taiwan in maintaining a sufficient self-defence capability,” it added.

Last year during visits by senior US officials to Taipei Chinese aircraft briefly crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, which normally serves as an unofficial buffer.

Beijing claims full sovereignty over Taiwan, a democracy of almost 24 million people located off the southeastern coast of mainland China, despite the fact that the two sides have been governed separately for more than seven decades. Taipei, on the other hand, has countered the Chinese aggression by increasing strategic ties with democracies including the US, which has been repeatedly opposed by Beijing. (ANI)

Farmers To Hold ‘Kisan Gantantra Parade’ On R-Day

Farmer unions protesting against the new farm laws said on Saturday that they will organise ‘Kisan Gantantra Parade’ on the Republic Day.

“Farmers will take out ‘Kisan Gantantra Parade’ on January 26. Barricades will be opened and we will enter Delhi,” Swaraj India leader Yogendra Yadav told the media here.

The farmer unions and police held talks earlier in the day over the proposed ‘Tractor Parade’.

Yadav said there has been an agreement on the route and the final details are being worked out.

“To save the prestige of the Republic, farmers will hold the Gantantra Parade on the occasion of Republic Day. We will take out a historic and peaceful parade and it will have no effect on the Republic Day parade or the security arrangements,” he said, adding that there is no limit on the number of tractors participating in the parade.

Another farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni appealed to the farmers participating in the parade to maintain discipline and follow the instructions issued.

“This is a big win that the barricades are being removed by the police. We do not have to force anyone to do that,” he said.

The talks of farmer unions and the government have seemingly broken down after the former insisted on their demand for the repeal of three new farm laws and the latter asked them to reconsider offer to put these laws on hold for about 18 months. The eleventh round of talks was held on Friday.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 against the three newly enacted farm laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. PM Using CBI, ED To Control Tamil Nadu Govt: Rahul

Taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said PM Modi does not understand the spirit, language, culture or history of Tamil Nadu, yet he is controlling the state government through the central investigation agencies.

Addressing the people of the state during a roadshow in Coimbatore, the Congress leader said he has familial ties with the state and is indebted to the people of Tamil Nadu for having a loving relationship with his grandmother and father.

“There is a government in Delhi that wants to suppress the Tamil culture, language and history. And the Prime Minister believes that India should only have only one language, one culture and one idea. Prime Minister believes that entire India should worship only one person called Narendra Modi. He does not understand the spirit of Tamil people,” Gandhi said.

The Congress leader said he has visited the state to fight for the rights of the Tamil people.

Gandhi further claimed that the schemes of the central government like demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST) are destroying the small and medium industries in the state and added that the Central government is only working in favour of some five or six industrialists.

“Tamil Nadu used to be the centre of industrial progress, but unfortunately today it does not occupy that place. I met representatives from small and medium industries today and they explained the damage done by demonstration and GST. Narendra Modi is doing everything to weaken the MSME sector. What belongs to the farmers, MSME, and labourers, he is giving to five or six big industrialists. We are never going to allow that,” the Congress leader added.

He further alleged that the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government in the state has compromised its position and is being controlled by the Central government.

“You have a government today in Tamil Nadu that is compromised. PM Modi used the CBI and Enforcement Directorate to get what he wants. He thinks just because he controls the government of Tamil Nadu, he can control the people of Tamil Nadu. Nagpur can never determine the future of Tamil Nadu,” said the Wayanad MP.

Invoking his personal ‘connections’ with the state and its people, Gandhi said he is here to pay back the love his family received from Tamil Nadu.

“I don’t have a political relationship with Tamil Nadu. I have a family relationship with the state. I have a blood relationship with Tamil Nadu. I have come here as your family member. I don’t want anything from you. I only want your love and affection, and you know that my sentiment towards you is pure and honest. You had a loving relationship with my grandmother and father. So, I’m indebted to you. You have given me so much love that I have to pay it back. I want to help in once again building Tamil Nadu,” he added.

The Congress leader is on a three-day visit to the western belt in Tamil Nadu and will have interactions with farmers, weavers and the general public.

He will also visit Tiruppur, Erode, Karur and Dindigul districts between January 23 to 25. (ANI)

Lalu’s Health Deteriorates, To Be Shifted To Delhi AIIMS

Preparations are underway to shift jailed Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief, Lalu Yadav, to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi for treatment after his health deteriorated, said Umesh Prasad, the physician of the leader on Saturday.

“We have decided to shift him (RJD leader Lalu Yadav) to AIIMS, Delhi by an air ambulance. Our doctors will go if requested. It depends upon preparations when he will leave from here to Delhi,” Dr. Umesh Prasad, told the media in Ranchi.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti has been sentenced two years imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs one lakh by a Delhi Court on Saturday for assaulting AIIMS security staff in 2016. The court granted him bail on the ground of filing an appeal against his conviction in Delhi High Court with a bond of Rs 20,000.

On Friday, the court convicted Bharti for assaulting AIIMS security guards in a matter registered in 2016. The court has acquitted the four other persons in the same matter.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Pandey on Friday passed a judgement in the matter.

The judgement stated, “Court is of the considered view that prosecution has duly proved its case beyond all reasonable doubt against accused Somnath Bharti regarding charges of an offence punishable U/s 323/353 read with Section 149 IPC and charge of an offence punishable U/s 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984 and charge of an offence punishable U/s 147 IPC read with Section 149 IPC and he is held guilty and convicted for the same.”

The court also held him guilty in the charge of an offence punishable under section 3 (Mischief causing damage to public property) of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984.

The court also said, ”The security staff of the AIIMS were performing the delegated duties of a public servant and are duly covered under the definition of Public Servant. In the same matter, the court acquitted the other accused persons namely Jagat Saini, Daleep Jha, Sandeep alias Sonu and Rakesh Pandey from all charges made against them by the prosecution.

According to the prosecution, on September 9, 2016, AIIMS Chief Security officer RS Rawat lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police accusing MLA Somnath Bharti and his 300 supporters of misbehaving with security guards of AIIMS.

In his written complaint, Rawat said, “Bharti, around 9:45 am on September 9, provoked the mob to damage the fence of government property (AIIMS)”.

Rawat also told the police that Bharti gave permission to unauthorised persons with JCB machines to get into AIIMS from Gautam Nagar Nallah roadside.

The chief security officer accused AAP MLA and others of trying to encroach government land and disrupting peace in the hospital. (ANI)
