Shilpa’s 1st Post After Kundra’s Arrest Talks Of Challenges

Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra, on Thursday night, shared a cryptic social media post, which appeared to be a page out of author James Thurber’s books.

This is her first post since the arrest and ongoing investigations of husband Raj Kundra for allegedly making pornographic films.

Taking to her Instagram Story, Shilpa shared a picture from a book’s page that highlighted Thurber’s quote which read, “Do not look back in anger, or forward in fear, but around in awareness.”

The first part of the note read, “Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness. We look back in anger at the people who’ve hurt us, the frustrations we’ve felt, the bad luck we’ve endured. We look forward in fear at the possibility that we might lose our job, contract a disease, or suffer the death of a loved one.”

“The place we need to be is right here, right now- not looking anxiously at what has been or what might be, but fully aware of what is. I take a deep breath, knowing that I’m lucky to be alive. I have survived challenges in the past and will survive challenges in the future. Nothing need distract me from living my life today,” concluded the page.

The Mumbai Police earlier on Tuesday informed that the Property Cell of its Crime Branch had so far arrested a total of 11 people, including Kundra for their alleged involvement in the creation of porn films and publishing them through some apps. Kundra has been accused of being a key conspirator in this case.

“He appears to be the key conspirator. We have sufficient evidence regarding this,” Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale had said. The case was registered with Crime Branch Mumbai in February 2021.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Maharashtra on Thursday informed that they have received four emails alleging that Kundra even bribed Mumbai Police officials with Rs 25 lakh to evade arrest.

According to an ACB official, the emails were sent by a Yash Thakur, another person accused in the pornography case. A similar amount was allegedly demanded from him as well. His allegations, however, were vague in nature and forwarded to the Mumbai Police for further action.

According to the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Milind Bharambe, Kundra had a tie-up with a London-based company involved in streaming pornographic content through a mobile app called ‘Hotshots’.

While addressing a press conference, Bharambe said that the police has not yet been able to any find any active role of Shilpa. After court permission, Kundra’s offices were searched a few clips were found as well. He was arrested along with his head of IT.

After the arrest on late night of July 19, many industry faces have stepped in and shared their side and cases related to Kundra and his business of pornographic films. (ANI)

CM Amarinder Softens Up, Invites Sidhu For Tea

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has softened his stance towards newly appointed Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu by deciding to attend the latter’s elevation ceremony on Friday and has also extended a tea invitation to the cricketer-turned-politician with whom he had been engaged in a bitter face-off for the past few months.

The first overture came from Sidhu, who invited the Chief Minister for his elevation ceremony and Singh responded with an invite for a tea for all party leaders and MLAs to be held at the Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh before they proceed to the party office.
Sidhu had written a letter to the Captain inviting him to attend the program to be held at 11 am tomorrow. Kuljeet Nagra, the new working president of Punjab Congress, met Captain and handed over the invitation letter to him.

On behalf of the Captain, all MLAs, MPs and senior leaders have been invited for tea at Punjab Bhawan in Chandigarh at 10 am on Friday. The chief minister and Sidhu will likely to meet tomorrow for the first time since the escalation of tension in the party.

What worked towards patching up things between the two leaders was the direct intervention of party high command Sonia Gandhi who, according to sources, had taken the initative and called up all the MPs and asked them to work together. After this things started quickly began to fall into place and the party’s Punjab in charge Harish Rawat was tasked with stitching together a rapprochement between the two leaders who had been at loggerheads for quite some time now.

Pargat Singh took over the command from the Sidhu camp, while Brahm Singh Mohindra started talking on behalf of the captain.

After meeting party president Sonia Gandhi, Amarinder Singh had said that he would accept the decision of the high command. However, Singh who was hurt by Sidhu’s disparaging attacks on Twitter, had put a condition that the former cricketer would have to apologize publicly.

Now although there has been no public apology, the chief minister seemed to have softened his stance.

Speaking to ANI, Harish Rawat said: “Under the leadership of Captain Amarinder Singh, Congress will unitedly welcome the new president tomorrow. Congress MPs will be present”

The CM’s media advisor Raveen Thukral tweeted that from Punjab Bhawan everybody would proceed to the state Congress office to attend the taking over ceremony of the new team of Punjab Congress.

In the invitation sent to the Captain for the taking over ceremony, Sidhu wrote that “I do not have any personal agenda, only the agenda of public interest”.

Describing the Captain as the oldest member of the house, Sidhu urged him to come to the ceremony and bless the new team.

In a letter to Amarinder Singh, Sidhu also said that “You and all are aware of my resolve and commitment to fulfill the 18 point agenda set by the high command in the interest of Punjab issues and the people of Punjab. I stand firm in my resolve. I will be.”

The invitation letter to the Captain also bears signatures of about 60 Congress MLAs, which is being considered as Sidhu’s show of strength directly in front of the Captain.

Earlier, before and after the announcement of the state president late on Sunday night, Sidhu had been going from house to house meeting party MLAs and leaders.

On Wednesday, he also offered prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, during which a large number of Congress MLAs and several ministers of the Captain’s government were present with Sidhu. It is believed that amid the softening of the captain’s stance, there is support for Sidhu.

While things appear to have patched up in the party, suspense still remains on whether Sidhu will really get the Captain’s blessings in the coming days considering that in the past, Sidhu has leveled all the allegations against the Captain including complicity with the Badal family. (ANI)

Good Governance Requires Promises To Be Fulfilled, Not Broken: HC To Delhi Govt

Good governance requires that promises, made to citizens by those who govern, are not broken, without valid and justifiable reasons, the Bench of Justice Prathiba M Singh on Thursday pronounced a judgment on a plea moved by four daily wage workers who claim to be tenants and are unable to pay their monthly rent.
The fifth petitioner in the matter is stated to be a landlord who has not been able to receive the monthly rent from his tenant. Both sets of petitioners sought recovery/payment/refund of the monthly rental amount, as per the promise made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Petitioners sought enforcement of the promise made by the Delhi Chief Minister on March 29, 2020, in a press conference, in which he requested all landlords to postpone the demand/collection of rent from those tenants who are poor and poverty-stricken, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They alleged that the Chief Minister had made a clear promise that if any tenant is unable to pay the rent due to poverty, the government would pay his/her rent on their behalf.

According to the petitioners, solemn assurance was given that the government would take care of the tenants.

Justice Prathiba M Singh begun the judgment by saying that, “Promises are meant to be broken is well known in the social context. However, the law has evolved the doctrines of legitimate expectation and promissory estoppel to ensure that promises made by the government, its officials and other authorities are not broken and are, in fact, judicially enforceable, subject to certain conditions.”

The Bench directed that the Government of NCT of Delhi would, having regard to the statement made by the Chief Minister on March 29, 2020, to landlords and tenants, take a decision as to the implementation of the same within a period of six weeks, the said decision would be taken, bearing in mind the larger interest of the persons to whom the benefits were intended to be extended in the said statement, as also any overriding public interest concerns.

The Court also noted that, while holding that the assurance/promise given by the Chief Minister is enforceable, both on the basis of the doctrines of promissory estoppel and legitimate expectation, the relief would have to be moulded keeping in mind the various factors. (ANI)

LS Sees Repeated Adjournments Due To Opposition’s Protest

The opposition MPs protested and came near the Speaker’s podium in support of their demands including repeal of new farm laws. They also held placards and raises slogans in support of their demands.

When the House met at 4 pm after three adjournments earlier, BJD member Bhartruhari Mahtab, who was in the Chair, urged members to take their seats.

“Most of you are responsible members of this House. I would request all of you to go back to your seats and allow the House to function. Whatever issues you want to discuss, I am told the government is also agreeable to having a structured discussion in the House,” he said.
Two bills – Inland Vessels Bill, 2021 and Essential Defence Services Bill, 2021 – were introduced in the House amid din.

Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla objected to opposition members raising slogans and showing placards in the House.

He said the House is for discussion and answering questions and if the opposition members want to raise slogans and show placards, they can do so outside the House.
The Lok Sabha has seen protests from opposition from the start of the monsoon session of parliament on July 19. (ANI)

Salman-Katrina Resume ‘Tiger 3’ Shoot

Bollywood actors Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif resumed shooting for their upcoming outing ‘Tiger 3’ today. The actors are up for a physically challenging shoot that will push their bodies to the limit.

The shooting is taking place at the YRF Studios in Mumbai.
“The new schedule of Tiger 3 has started today in Yash Raj Films Studios. It is a closely guarded set and one can expect no picture to leak from here. Salman and Katrina’s fitness will be tested in this schedule as well as the extensive overseas schedule that is set to start from mid-August,” a source said.

The source added, “Salman teased his physique in Tiger 3 on his social media and it is evident that he is building the best body that he has ever showcased on screen. Katrina, on the other hand, has been keeping an extremely low profile with hardly any revelation of how good she is looking currently. There’s a reason for this also. She has worked like a beast to be her fittest best and people will have to wait to see her fittest best on-screen when Tiger 3 is set to release.”

Looks like Salman and Katrina are set for some breath-taking action sequences.

“It will be intense for these two actors because director Maneesh Sharma has planned some jaw-dropping and hugely risky action sequences that will truly test their overall fitness levels when they start their overseas schedule. Of course, Salman and Katrina are game for it and ready for any challenges to be thrown at them. It will be a fun schedule,” the source further said, teasing what’s in store for the movie buffs.

For the unversed, ‘Tiger 3’ is the third film in the successful ‘Ek Tha Tiger franchise’.

Actor Emraan Hashmi will play the role of a villain in the upcoming movie. A few days ago, he had also shared a picture of his chiselled physique, hinting that it’s his new look for ‘Tiger 3’.

The upcoming film will mark Emraan’s maiden collaboration with YRF, which is producing the flick.

‘Tiger 3’ will have Salman reprise his role of R&AW (Research & Analysis Wing) agent Avinash Singh Rathore aka Tiger, while Katrina will be seen playing the female lead.

The first film of the popular franchise called ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ came out in 2012 and was directed by Kabir Khan. The film received an overwhelming response and was a massive success at the box office.

The second movie, ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, had released in 2017 and was directed by Ali Abbas Zafar. Salman and Katrina have featured in both movies. (ANI)

Is It Curtains For Cinematic Freedom?

Most governments want control. Some governments want more control than the others. Some governments want more and more control, but also want to appear democratic. They camouflage this obsessive tendency with this or that fig leaf. However, some governments want absolute control, and they care a damn.

Witness what China is doing in Hong Kong. But Hong Kong was not like the ‘mainland’ – it was not like Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Lhasa, or even Urumqi in Xinjiang — under total control of a well-oiled totalitarian system. Hong Kong was so different!

For all you know, these days it reminds of ‘one hundred years of solitude’ in Hong Kong. It’s a new model of ‘cultural revolution’ enshrined by ‘President for Life’: Xi Jinping. Total control on freedom of expression; not even peaceful symbolism is allowed. They might pick you up if you flash your mobile as a sign of ‘creative dissent’.

Therefore, independent newspapers and media outfits etc, have been shut, or, compelled to be shut, while scores of peaceful dissenters and activists are rotting in jail. Also in prison are editors, journalists, and, at least one media owner. This is a ‘gift’ given to the people of Hong Kong as the mainland celebrates ‘one hundred years’ of the Communist Party of China!

Myanmar, like a good neighbour, has chosen China as a role model. A military junta is yet again running amok after dismantling a fragile democracy, killing hundreds of non-violent youngsters, and putting in prison not only Aung Sang Su Kyi, but pro-democracy dissenters, students and journalists. And since doctors and nurses were the first to protest, some of them too have been packed off to prisons, even as the pandemic rages like a death machine. Thus, many doctors and journalists have gone underground, running secret clinics and solo media-outfits, from nameless locations.

Surely, India is not going the Hong Kong or Myanmar way! So, what are the ‘signposts’ of Indian democracy while we await the third surge of a killer virus?

Stan Swamy, 84, no charges proved, not even interrogated by the NIA for one day, his body ravaged by Alzheimer’s and Covid. Witness his slow, tortuous death in jail, without bail — also called an ‘Institutional Murder’.

Or, remember all the others in prison for no rhyme or reason—young, brilliant scholars, eminent intellectuals and academics, under the draconian UAPA, on what are widely perceived to be fake and cooked-up charges.

Indeed, tomorrow, if a filmmaker makes a movie called ‘A Sipper for Stan Swamy’ — it might run into serious trouble.

ALSO READ: An Idea Cannot Be Jailed

It is not only the obsessive addiction with ‘control’ – the ominous signs are all out there: the concerted attack on campuses, the targeting of dissenters, scholars, journalists, intellectuals, the organized move to capture institutions like the FTII and the clampdown, the rampant use of a British-era law like ‘Sedition’, and the way in which sections of the media have become relentless perpetrators of fake, doctored news and hate politics — media ethics can go get damned! Or, the manner in which the organized army of trolls operate — in their crass cacophony, in tandem with the ultra-loyal TV anchors.

A pronounced savagery has come to rule the roost in the dominant political narrative, riding vitriolic, venomous and vicious campaigns, signifying the most bestial dimensions of human nature. This is upfront and ugly – from the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, to the death of photo-journalist Danish Siddiqui. Besides, he is a Muslim.

This was exactly the vile method followed in the systematic targeting of Rhea Chakravarty and Deepika Padukone, and the Mumbai film industry! Look at the language they would willfully use! It’s so predictable — this diabolical, indecent diatribe!

Undoubtedly, democracy in India is currently trapped in a twilight zone. It’s a kind of condemnation for an entire nation. There is therefore an immediate historic context to the uncanny unease in the film industry in India — from Mumbai to regional cinema.

So why has the central government sought comments on the ‘draft’ Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill 2021? And what are the proposals in this new draft bill?

To punish piracy with a fine and jail term, bring in age-based certification, and, most significantly, empower the central government with the power to seek ‘recertification’ of a film already certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

ALSO READ: Social Media Rules – Curtailing Whose Freedom

Several eminent filmmakers have written to the government: “Undermining the sovereignty of the Censor Board and the Supreme Court, this provision will effectively give the central government supreme power over cinema exhibition in the country, potentially endangering freedom of expression and democratic dissent.”

They are backed by scores of film associations and unions like the Producers Guild of India (PGI), Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC), Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association Associate (IMPAA), Western India Film Producers Association (WIFPA), Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), Indian Film and Television Directors Association (IFTDA), the Associated Chamber of Commerce of India (ASSOCHAM), Screen Writers Association (SWA), among others. There is a massive campaign on by academics, filmmakers, writers, artists, etc, arguing that this new proposal should be dropped lock, stock and barrel.

So, why this new draft at all? Why this need to ‘rethink’ certification once the CBFC has passed it?

In April this year, the Centre dissolved the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT), where filmmakers could go seeking relief from decisions of the Censor Board which they did not agree with. Besides, there is a considered opinion in the film industry that the CBFC should only do certification, and not censor a film!

There can be many stated and unstated reasons behind this move, and conspiracy theorists can fly to the moon. Control, undoubtedly. But the underlying message could be less subtle: Choose self-censorship as a one-stop-shop, drop subjects which might seem to annoy the powers-that-be, toe the line, follow the dominant code of conduct, accept passive submission in terms of script, story-line or cinematic content, even songs and lyrics, take the safe way out, no creative subversion please, drop/rethink historical narratives with a historical backdrop, if they re-write history, keep your mouth shut, drop/rethink socially and politically relevant themes, avoid controversial current affairs, don’t make films which tell an established truth but they want it to be hushed up, avoid bitter realism, avoid realism, period. Don’t make films which they might not like; indeed, just don’t make films, period.

Said a filmmaker, “Tomorrow, after a film is passed by the CBFC, a group or politician might claim that the film is anti-national and a ruckus is socially engineered. So the government might just come in and block/delay the film. So what should the filmmaker do? Jump in which nearest well?”

Others say this is also a time-tested method to test the muddy waters, to send signals, and to put a leash on the film industry which has been historically secular. Anyway, with so much money pumped in, why should a commercial filmmaker or a mega star choose to not toe the line? As for the offbeat filmmaker making meaningful cinema – she/he can go hang themselves! The sword hangs like McCarthyism in the US during the Cold War.

In such a hopeless futuristic scenario, most good filmmakers will either stop making good films, or make only such films that make the ‘system’ happy. Meaningful, aesthetic or socially/politically relevant cinema just cannot be made in such a realm of authoritarian control, fear and uncertainty. In such a scenario, can a filmmaker really make a movie like ‘Parzania’ or ‘Haider’? Or,afilm on the assassination of Gandhi, for instance? Indeed, if you call a film ‘The Oxygen Cylinder’ with the second surge of mass cremations as a backdrop, they might just choose to get it canned – The End!

Getting Threat Calls For Exposing Kundra: Model

Model Sagarika Shona Suman, on Thursday, claimed that she has been getting threatening, abusive, and vulgar calls following her bombshell allegations against Raj Kundra.

After Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra was sent to police custody in the pornography case, several models and actors have come ahead to reveal their personal experiences with Kundra’s pornography web business.
Suman, who in a viral video had accused Kundra of demanding a nude audition from her, has now revealed that she is getting threatening, abusive, and vulgar calls on Messenger and WhatsApp.

“I am disturbed and depressed because I am getting calls from different online platforms. They are threatening me. I am getting threats of death and rape. People are calling me from different numbers and asking me what wrong has Raj Kundra done,” she said in a video.

She added, “They are threatening me and accusing me of shutting down their business. They even said that you people watch porn films that’s why we are making it.”

Suman also said that she feels her life is in danger because of those people and added that she will report a complaint against those people in the police station tomorrow.

In a clip, she had claimed that Kundra offered her a role in a web series and allegedly asked to give an audition in the nude.

“In August 2020, I got a call from Umesh Kamat, who offered me a web series produced by Kundra. When I joined the video call, he demanded a nude audition that I refused,” she said.

The model even held a press conference and reported the same, in February this year.

Farmers’ Protest: Buses Carrying Farmers Arrive At Jantar Mantar

With the scheduled farmers protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Thursday, the buses carrying farmers have arrived at the site. The protesting farmers will agitate against Central Government’s three farm laws here.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait has also reached Jantar Mantar as farmers begin their protest against farm laws.
Tikait had earlier said that the farmers will hold their own Parliament sessions at Jantar Mantar.

Heavy security is being deployed at the Singhu border and Tikri Border in view of farmers’ protests amid the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.
Farmers have been permitted to protest at Jantar Mantar with limited numbers not exceeding 200 persons for Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and six persons for Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) from 11 am to 5 pm daily.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws. So far, several rounds of talks have been held between the Centre and farmer leaders to break the deadlock between the two parties. (ANI)
