Sonia Asks Punjab Congress To Work Unitedly

Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked Punjab Congress MPs to work unitedly and repeat the victory of 2017 Assembly Polls in the state, said party leader and MP Gurjeet S Aujla on Monday.

“Congress president Sonia Gandhi called Congress MPs from Punjab and asked them to work unitedly to strengthen the party in the state and repeat victory in Assembly Polls,” Aujla told ANI.
The development follows a meeting of MPs from Punjab with Pratap Singh Bajwa at his residence today.

Earlier today, amid the ongoing tussle in Punjab Congress, all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of Congress from the state met at the party Bajwa’s residence in Delhi to discuss issues related to the state unit.

Congress MPs Manish Tewari, Jasbir Gill, Shamsher Singh Dullo, Mohd Siddiqui, Praneet Kaur, Santokh Chaudhary, Ravneet Singh Bittu and others attended the meeting.

However, Congress MPs had categorically denied discussing the Captain-Sidhu rift, saying they formulated strategies to corner the government in the Monsoon session.

Pratap Singh Bajwa had said the farmers’ protest and issues related to Punjab were discussed in the meeting.

Meanwhile, after months of infighting in the state unit as Navjot Singh Sidhu openly rebelled against Captain Amarinder Singh’s government over several issues, Congress appointed the former cricketer as president of the party’s Punjab unit.

Besides Sidhu, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has also appointed Sangat Singh Gilzian, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Pawan Goel and Kuljit Singh Nagra as Working Presidents of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

The decision came after rounds of meetings between Congress high command with Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sindhu. (ANI)

LS Adjourned After Uproar Over Govt Snooping

Amid the uproar by the Opposition MPs during the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament on Monday, Lok Sabha has been again adjourned till 11 am on Tuesday.

The Speaker adjourned the proceedings of the houses as the Opposition continued sloganeering of ‘We want justice’ as Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw issued a statement on the ‘Pegasus Project’.
Speaking on ‘Pegasus Project’, Vaishnaw said reports had no factual basis and were denied by all parties.

“A highly sensational story was published by a web portal last night. Many over-the-top allegations were made around this story. The press reports appeared a day before the monsoon session of Parliament. This can’t be a coincidence,” said Vaishnaw.

“In the past, similar claims were made regarding the use of Pegasus on WhatsApp. Those reports had no factual basis and were denied by all parties. Press reports of July 18 also appear to be an attempt to malign Indian democracy and its well-established institutions,” he added.

Earlier, the proceeding of the house had commenced at 3.30 pm amid the sloganeering of ‘We want justice’ by the Opposition.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi said, “I want to reassure that government is ready to discuss any subject.” (ANI)

Afghanistan: How US Turned ‘Good War’ Into ‘Dumb War’

It should come as no surprise that the US military intervention in Afghanistan has not yielded a political resolution to a decades-long conflict or that it has failed to retain the support of the American public according to a policy expert.

Wesley Jefferies, writing in The National Interest said that by withdrawing from Afghanistan, the United States is letting go of a false hope for a lost cause doomed by a polite fiction.
When President Joe Biden declared the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan after twenty years of fighting, he declared that the original objectives for the invasion had been achieved. “We were attacked, we went to war with clear goals,” he gravely intoned. “We achieved those objectives. Bin Laden is dead and Al Qaeda is degraded in Afghanistan, and it’s time to end this forever war.”

Curiously, he omitted where exactly the founder of Al Qaeda had met his end, wrote Jefferies.

While there are other more local and nuanced factors that contributed to the US failure to bring order and stability to Afghanistan, including supporting a system of government that has never amounted to much more than warlord rule beyond Kabul, it is Pakistan that looms as the largest.

As complex and confusing as the situation in Afghanistan is for foreign observers and visitors, the most fundamental lacuna in the analysis and strategy behind US objectives in the country is a manifest failure to clearly acknowledge and accept the situation on the ground in Afghanistan for what it is: the United States has been waging and losing a proxy war against an alleged ally (Pakistan).

It becomes indefensibly absurd when also claiming to do so in partnership with a country that bears the most responsibility for the continuing chaos and carnage in Afghanistan.

It has long been an open secret that Pakistan has actively and consistently thwarted US operations against the Taliban and Al Qaeda since the attacks of September 11, 2001, reported The National Interest.

As a state sponsor of terrorism, Pakistan has matched or exceeded the actions and patterns of sanctioned regimes in Iran and North Korea, says Jefferies.

Among all the moral compromises made by Washington in its diplomatic relationships during the ‘War on Terror’, the US relationship with Islamabad was the most destructive and counterproductive.

After the United States invaded Afghanistan, Pakistan gave shelter to elements of both Al Qaeda and the Taliban. Osama Bin Laden himself was found in Pakistan’s military academy in Abbottabad.

After Bin Laden was finally found and killed, Pakistani authorities retaliated against local informants cooperating with US intelligence.

In spite of the evidence, there would be no major changes to the US relationship with Pakistan, says Jefferies.

After Donald Trump became US president, there was only a temporary change to relations with Islamabad after military aid was put on hold.

After Trump met with Imran Khan, the military-backed prime minister who has praised Osama bin Laden, the aid program was resumed. Despite a promised withdrawal, US troops remained in Afghanistan and US aid to Pakistan continued.

After the Pentagon pressured the White House to escalate the war, increasing numbers of US troops and civilian officials were sent into harm’s way and tasked with implementing near impossible projects of social transformation.

At the same time, the United States sent aid to the country that directed efforts to arm and train the Taliban insurgency. The absurd implications of US policy and strategy are such that it would be as if America had waged the Vietnam War while also sending aid to Hanoi.

If Washington is unprepared to hold Islamabad to account for being the malign actor in the international system it has become, there is no strategic justification to remain in Afghanistan, says Jefferies.

There is a looming tragedy, to be sure, in the near future of Afghanistan when the US withdraws. Estimates by the US intelligence community suggest Kabul could fall to the Taliban in only six months after the last US troops leave Afghan soil. (ANI)

No Substance In Pegasus Snooping Report: IT Minister

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday said there is ‘no substance’ in the media report regarding the use of Pegasus on WhatsApp, adding that the report was an attempt to malign Indian democracy and its well-established institutions.

Speaking in Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw said that it can’t be a coincidence that the report appeared a day before the commencement of the monsoon session of Parliament.

“A highly sensational story was published by a web portal last night. Many over-the-top allegations were made around this story. The press reports appeared a day before the monsoon session of Parliament. This can’t be a coincidence,” said the Minister about the Pegasus Project.

He said that in the past too, similar claims were made regarding the use of Pegasus on WhatsApp and those reports too had no factual basis and were denied by all parties.

“Press reports of July 18 also appear to be an attempt to malign Indian democracy and its well-established institutions,” Vaishnaw said.

Requesting members of the House to examine issues on facts and logic, the Minister noted that the basis of this report is that there is a consortium that has got access to a leaked database of 50,000 phone numbers.

“We can’t fault those who haven’t read the news story in detail and I request all members of House to examine issues on facts and logic. The basis of this report is that there is a consortium that has got access to a leaked database of 50,000 phone numbers. The allegation is that individuals linked to these phone numbers are being spied upon,” he said.

However, Vaishnaw noted the report said that the presence of a phone number in the data does not reveal whether a device was infected by Pegasus or subjected to an attempted hack.

“Without subjecting the phone to this technical analysis, it’s not possible to conclusively state whether it witnessed an attempted hack or successfully compromised. The report itself clarifies that the presence of a number in the list doesn’t amount to snooping,” he observed.

The Minister said that any form of illegal surveillance isn’t possible with “checks and balances in our laws and robust institutions.”

“In India, there’s a well-established procedure through which lawful interception of electronic communication is carried out for purpose of national security. Requests for lawful interceptions of electronic communication are made as per relevant rules under provisions of Sec 5(2) of Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and Sec 69 of Information Technology Act 2000. Each case of interception is approved by the competent authority,” he assured.

Vaishnaw added that when the issue is looked through the ‘prism of logic’, “it clearly emerges that there is no substance, whatsoever, behind this sensationalism”.

The names of over 40 Indian journalists appeared on the leaked list of potential targets for surveillance by an unidentified agency using Pegasus spyware, according to a report published in The Wire on Sunday.

According to the report, the journalists who were targeted work for some news organisations in the country including Hindustan Times, The Hindu, India Today, Indian Express and Network18. Many of them cover matters related to Defence, Home Ministry, Election Commission and Kashmir among others. (ANI)
