228 Indians Among 626 Afghans Evacuated So Far: Puri

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday informed that a total of 626 people including 228 Indian citizens have been evacuated from Afghanistan till now. He also informed out of them, 77 were Afghan Sikhs.

The number of Indian citizens evacuated does not include those working in the Indian Embassy, Puri added.
Talking about the three Swaroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib brought from Kabul to Delhi today, Puri said, “It was a very emotional and moving experience for me as a Sikh to be able to pay obeisance.”

“During the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, when the Gurudwara at Kabul was attacked, the Central government facilitated 383 Afghan Sikhs to come to India. During the latest developments in Afghanistan, seven evacuation flights were organised,” he added.

Further, Puri said PM Modi has always lent the Sikh community, home or abroad, a shoulder of support in times of distress. “The sewadars who have come (from Afghanistan) have thanked PM Modi and Mother India that we are able to provide sanctuary and comfort to people in distress, particularly to Hindus and Sikhs,” he added.

Talking about his recent tweet regarding Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Hardeep Singh Puri said, “The same people who were opposing CAA legislation when it was enacted are demanding to adjust the cut-off date today.”

Sharing a news article, Puri had tweeted on August 22, “Recent developments in our volatile neighbourhood and the way Sikhs and Hindus are going through a harrowing time are precisely why it was necessary to enact the Citizenship Amendment Act.” (ANI)

India, Pak Issue Diplomatic Visas After 28 Months

India and Pakistan have issued assignment visas to each other’s diplomats after a gap of around 28 months as both countries are trying to normalise ties.

Both countries have issued a large number of assignment visas to each other’s diplomatic staff in recent weeks.
According to the Express Tribune, India and Pakistan have issued visas on all applications submitted by March 15, 2021.

A total of seven Pakistani diplomats received assignment visas from India while Pakistan issued visas to 33 Indian officials.

As per the Express Tribune, India and Pakistan are likely to issue more visas to each other’s diplomats.

Both countries around the world issue assignment visas to diplomats and embassy staff from other countries.

In January this year, the two arch-enemies held secret talks in Dubai, initiated backchannel diplomacy aimed at normalising ties in the next several months.

The armies of both India and Pakistan in February 2021 announced an unexpected joint ceasefire.

In April, the UAE’s envoy to Washington said that the Gulf state was mediating between India and Pakistan to reach a healthy and functional relationship, reported the Express Tribune.

Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba said in a virtual discussion with Stanford University’s Hoover Institution said, “UAE had played a role in bringing Kashmir escalation down and created a ceasefire, hopefully ultimately leading to restoring diplomats and getting the relationship back to a healthy level”.

“They might not sort of becoming best friends but at least we want to get it to a level where it’s functional, where it’s operational, where they are speaking to each other,” he added.

Earlier in March, Chief of Amy Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa called on India to bury the past and move towards cooperation.

The ties between both the countries were severed after the 2019 Pulwama attack in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed.

A suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the bus. The convoy had 78 buses in which around 2,500 personnel were travelling from Jammu to Srinagar. (ANI)

UK PM To Call On G7 Leaders To Step Up Support For Afghan people

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be calling on G7 leaders to step up support for Afghan people after the war-torn country fell into the hands of the Taliban last week, said British High Commission in India on Tuesday through an official statement.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair a G7 Leaders’ meeting this afternoon to continue to stand by the Afghan people and step up support for refugees and increase humanitarian aid.
Chairing the meeting, he is expected to urge international partners to match the UK’s commitments on aid and the resettlement of those who need it the most, in order to protect human rights and contribute to the stability of the region.

Leaders are also expected to reiterate their commitment to safeguarding the gains made in Afghanistan over the last 20 years – in particular on girls’ education and the rights of women and minorities, said British High Commission release.

Discussions are set to cover ongoing collaboration on evacuation efforts at Kabul airport and longer-term work to secure a more stable future for Afghanistan and ensure any new government is inclusive and abides by its international obligations.

Ahead of the meeting, Johnson said, “Our first priority is to complete the evacuation of our citizens and those Afghans who have assisted our efforts over the last 20 years – but as we look ahead to the next phase, it’s vital we come together as an international community and agree a joint approach for the longer term.”

“That’s why I have called an emergency meeting of the G7 – to coordinate our response to the immediate crisis, to reaffirm our commitment to the Afghan people, and to ask our international partners to match the UK’s commitments to support those in need,” added Johnson.

He further reiterated that together with its partners and allies, UK will continue to use every humanitarian and diplomatic lever to safeguard human rights and protect the gains made over the last two decades.

“The Taliban will be judged by their deeds and not their words,” said the UK PM.

Taliban in their first press conference after taking control of Afghanistan said the rights of women will be “respected with the framework of Islamic law”. During the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001, brutal floggings, amputations and public executions were commonplace.

Women were largely confined to their homes and the death penalty was in place for offenses including female adultery, homosexuality and the rejection of Islam.

The meeting will take place by video conference and the NATO and UN Secretaries-General have also been invited to join the discussion, added the release.

Earlier this week PM Johnson set out his five-point plan for addressing the risk of the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

The plan has five parts — immediately helping those to whom we have direct obligations; protecting ourselves against any threat from terrorism; supporting Afghan people in the region through humanitarian and development assistance; creating safe and legal routes to resettle Afghans in need, and developing a clear plan for dealing with the new Afghan regime in a unified and concerted way.

The meeting of G7 leaders comes after Johnson chaired a meeting of the Civil Contingencies Committee (COBR) on Monday afternoon where ministers discussed the latest situation in Afghanistan.

As of the morning of Monday, the UK had secured the evacuation of almost 6,000 people out of Kabul since Operation Pitting began last week, which includes British Nationals and their dependants, embassy staff, and Afghan nationals under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP) programme.

The UK has already doubled the amount of humanitarian aid to the region, committing up to Pound 286 million with immediate effect, and last week a new bespoke resettlement scheme was also announced.

This programme will be one of the most generous in British history and is set to relocate up to 20,000 vulnerable Afghans, said the release. (ANI)

Owaisi To Attend MEA Briefing On Afghanistan For Parliamentary Floor Leaders

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday informed that he has received an invitation for the meeting of floor leaders of political parties in Parliament for a briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs on the situation of Afghanistan.

Owaisi informed about the development in a telephonic conversation with ANI.
Earlier on Monday, Owaisi had said on Twitter that he is expecting an invite for the meeting.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had instructed the foreign ministry to brief floor leaders of political parties.

“In view of developments in Afghanistan, PM @narendramodi has instructed that MEA brief Floor Leaders of political parties. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs @JoshiPralhad will be intimating further details,” tweeted Jaishankar.

Sharing that post, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Patel gave details of the meeting scheduled to be held on Thursday.

“Floor Leaders of Political Parties would be briefed by EAM @DrSJaishankar on the present situation in Afghanistan, on 26th August, 11 am in Main Committee Room, PHA, New Delhi. Invites are being sent through email. All concerned are requested to attend,” said Patel in a tweet yesterday.

Responding to Patel’s post, Owaisi tweeted, “Sir I hope AIMIM will also be invited.”

This comes at a time when the Indian government is evacuating its citizens from the war-ravaged country in wake of the fall of Kabul to the Taliban.

On August 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and instructed all concerned officials to undertake all necessary measures to ensure the safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Afghanistan in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the MEA has said the government is committed to the safe return of all Indian nationals from Afghanistan. The MEA said that the main challenge for travel to and from Afghanistan is the operational status of the Kabul airport.

India on Sunday brought back nearly 400 people on three different flights. Another group of 87 Indians and two Nepalese nationals were brought back in a special Air India flight from Dushanbe, a day after they were evacuated to the Tajikistan capital in an IAF aircraft.

Separately, 135 Indians evacuated from Kabul to Doha in the last few days by the US and NATO aircraft were flown back to Delhi on a special flight.

On August 15, the Taliban entered the presidential palace in the Afghan capital on Sunday and declared its victory over the government after months of violence in Afghanistan. (ANI)

Sidhu Slams Amarinder Govt For Low Sugarcane Prices In Punjab

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu criticised the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government and said the state assured sugarcane state advised price (SAP) is too low compared to other states.

In a tweet, Sidhu wrote, “The sugarcane farmers issue needs to be immediately resolved amicably …. Strange that despite the higher cost of cultivation in Punjab the state assured price is too low as compared to Haryana/ UP/ Uttarakhand. As a torchbearer of agriculture, the Punjab SAP should be better!”
“Sugarcane farmers SAP has not increased since 2018, whereas input cost has increased by over 30 per cent. Punjab model means policy interventions giving fair prices, equitable share in profits, diversification in production and processing to give more profits to both farmers and sugar mill,” he added.

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief demanded that SAP should be immediately hiked.

“SAP should be immediately hiked as per farmers’ demands and pending dues should be released. Along with the modernization of sugar mills for higher productivity and production of high-value byproducts (ethanol, biofuel and electricity) for boosting profits of both farmers and sugar mills,” Sidhu said.

Sidhu’s comments came days after Amarinder Singh and the Punjab Congress chief had agreed to set up a 10-member ‘Strategic Policy Group’ to ensure better coordination between the ruling party and the state government and to further expedite the implementation of the various government programmes and reform initiatives.

The Punjab Congress has been witnessing a feud between the top two leaders. Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh on August 11 had raised his concerns in front of Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi regarding the statements made by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu after his appointment to the post.

According to party sources, Amarinder Singh had ‘complained’ to Sonia Gandhi that Sidhu’s criticism of his government is not good for its smooth functioning and gives a bad impression in the public domain.

Punjab Assembly is scheduled for polls next year. (ANI)
