Rahul Demands Restoration Of Full Statehood For J-K

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while addressing the party workers in Srinagar on Tuesday, said that we demand the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and revival of the democratic process of elections here.

Rahul Gandhi is on a two-day tour to the Union Territory and was in Srinagar to inaugurate the new party office there. “My family used to live in Allahabad and before that, they used to live here. I have not been here much but I understand you a little bit. I have a bit of Kashmiriyat inside me as well,” said Gandhi.
He further stated that the strength of the J-K people is brotherhood and their way of living and that anybody spreading hatred will never be accepted by the people here.

“Ghulam Nabi Azad ji asked me to raise the issue of Kashmir in Parliament. But I want to tell that we are not allowed to speak there. There are many issues like Pegasus, corruption and unemployment that I want to raise. But we are not given a chance to speak,” said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“Today, it is not only J-K but every institution of the country like the judiciary, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha that is being attacked. The media is being threatened and they are scared of portraying the truth. The process to improve J-K that had begun in Congress regime has been hurt badly,” he added.

Gandhi further stated that he supports the restoration of full statehood and free and fair elections in J-K and his office in Srinagar will be a new beginning for the party in the Union Territory.

“I will fight against Narendra Modi and his ideology of violence and dividing India. I will fight against hatred and fear. Congress is a party that spreads love and peace. I will soon visit Jammu and Ladakh as well,” he further said. (ANI)

Saudis Plagued By ‘Misyar’, An UnIslamic Practice

The Saudi society is currently facing a dilemma bordering on societal norms, morals and Sharia. This peculiar situation has developed mainly due to the increase in number of Zawaz Al-Misyar or Misyar marriages in the Kingdom.

A Misyar marriage is considered legal across Arab countries, but is not favoured upon due to its immoral basis, though legally it stands the trial of Sharia. Its opponents say that no reference to such marriage is found in the Holy Quran or Ahadith (the saying and practices of the prophet Muhammad-PBUH). They further put it at par with Muttah marriage, which is prevalent amongst the Imamiyyah Shiites.

What is Misyar?

Basically, Misyar is a contract under which the husband and wife give up several rights by their own free will, such as living together, equal division of nights between wives, the wife’s rights to housing, and maintenance money (nafaqa), and the husband’s right to home-keeping and access etc.

The couple continue to live separately from each other, as before their marriage, but get together regularly, often for sexual relations in a permissible and halal manner. Although allowed in some Muslim countries, Misyar is not popular with many because women lose nearly all their rights in this confidential marriage. A large number of such marriages end up in divorce.

A Saudi study conducted by Mada Bint Abdul Rahman Al Qurashi at the King Saud University confirmed the necessity of working to reduce the exorbitant costs of marriage so that some men do not have to resort to a Misyar marriage for economic motives. The study stressed the need not to increase the mehr (gifts and money given by husband to his wife after the nikah), as it is one of the main reasons for the spread of Misyar marriage in Saudi society, particularly among not well-off young Saudis.

The Saudi study showed that one of the reasons for husbands resorting to Misyar marriage is that most Saudi women do not accept the idea of polygamy. The study further called for conducting studies aimed at uncovering the reasons for the spread of a Misyar marriage among different segments and groups of the Saudi society in different cities of the Kingdom, so a proper strategy could be formed and a campaign started against it.

It showed that women often resort to Misyar marriage, forfeiting their right to maintenance and overnight stay, in order to obtain a husband who provides her with the life needs that were difficult for her, and that most divorced women resort to Misyar marriage because of their desire to marry and chastity, as well as the woman’s desire to move and travel freely.

Even the Saudi government is aware of the ill effects of Misyar, Al Watan newspaper quoting government sources reported in 2018 that such marriages are often short-lived, with most ending in divorce from anywhere between 14 and 60 days.

Some time back a prominent Riyadh cleric attributed its proliferation to men unwilling to shoulder the full responsibilities of polygamous marriage, which is permitted in Islam as long as all wives are treated equally.

Senior Saudi journalist Tariq Al Maeena in one of his columns published in the Saudi Gazette daily in 2019, termed Misyar as a “license to have multiple partners without much responsibility or expense”. “Reports in the Saudi press have spoken of growing concerns over the number of children fathered by Saudi males in their trips abroad and abandoned for all practical purposes.” he wrote.

Misyar and Sharia

Though no reference to Misyar is found either in the Holy Quran or the Ahadith, one is also not sure how and when it crept in the Saudi society. Moreover Misyar is permissible only under Hanbali Fiqh (school of Sharia or jurisprudence), which is prevalent in Saudi Arabia. Saudi clerics say the practice has proliferated since 1996, when the then Grand Mufti, the kingdom’s highest religious authority Abed Al Aziz Ibn Baz, legitimised it with an Islamic edict. But no one is ready to ascertain what were the factors based on which the Grand Mufti issued such a controversial fatwa.

Since then many fatwas have been issued concerning the legality of the Misyar marriage. At the beginning Sheikh Al Athemain, made a distinction between the legal aspect and the moral or social consequences of the ambulant marriage. Nevertheless he did not say that it is against the Sharia; however, what scholars fear, are its dangerous and unpredictable social consequences, which no one is ready to address.

According to Sheikh Al Athemain and Sheikh Al Yusef Qardawi, the Misyar is a lawful marriage since it includes a contract, a declaration and a dowry. However, within this marriage, the fact that the Misyar wife gives up her rights of cohabitation and nafaqa are ones which no jurist is ready to address.

Most of the Islamic jurists take a very convoluted and cautious approach to the issue by saying that it fulfills the requirement of the Sharia and when pointed out that no reference to it is present in either the Holy Quran or the Ahadith, they evade response. But most of the Indian fuqah (Jurists) who follow the Fiqh-e Hanafi describe Misyar as an unIslamic practice.

Mufti Amanat Al Qasmi, Mufti at Dar-ul Ifta (Department of Jurisprudence) at Darul Uloom – Waqf, Deoband says categorically that fulfilling the legal aspects of a lawful marriage in certain aspects doesn’t grant the status of legality to Misyar marriages. He opines that as a jurist and alim (scholar) one should also consider the moral and customary aspects of a decision and should not be bound by the legalese and take cover under them. In addition Misyar also exposes the contradictions found in the Saudi society.

One can only hope that Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who has taken many progressive steps to ensure rights to women, he might also take-up this issue with jurists and campaign against it. In addition he should also call for decreasing the mehr amount, which not every young Saudi is able to meet, therefore trying to solve two issues with one edict and also freeing the Saudi society from an allegedly unIslamic act.

Taking a trip down memory lane, on Tuesday, global star Priyanka Chopra reminisced how her ‘impulsive phone call’ to superstars Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif led to the idea of making her recently announced female multi-starrer ‘Jee Le Zara’.

On the occasion of the 20-year anniversary of his National Award-winning film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar announced his next directorial venture ‘Jee Le Zaraa’.

Priyanka, Alia, and Katrina also expressed their excitement about being a part of ‘Jee Le Zaraa’, on their social media accounts; but it was the former Miss World’s post in which she shared the anecdote behind the collaboration of the leading ladies of Bollywood.

Sharing a picture with her ‘girlfriends’, Priyanka recalled the 2019’s November month when on an unusually rainy night in Mumbai she mused about wanting to do another Hindi movie “ASAP”.

“But it had to be the right one – different, cool, never been done before… I thought. The idea grew into a movie helmed by an all-female cast. There are not enough Hindi movies that are female multi-starrers. This led to an impulsive phone call… to my 2 real friends about this idea that involved 3 on-screen girlfriends. A celebration of friendship we called it!!” Priyanka shared in the caption.

The ‘Bajirao Mastani’ actor further shared that the three divas “enthusiastically met in February 2020”, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, “to discuss who we could trust to bring this vision to life for us and our choice was unanimous… Farhan and Ritesh, Zoya and Reema. We had all worked with @excelmovies and @tigerbabyfilms individually so this seemed perfect. It just so happened that Farhan was working on a female road trip movie at the same time! Talk about all the stars aligning!!”

Priyanka revealed that it took a three-year-long gap to align their work schedules with each other.

“This one is to sisterhood… to friendship and to breaking the mould!! Can’t wait to get on the road with Aloo and Katty. My heart’s smiling. See you at the movies,” she concluded.

Alia and Katrina also penned gratitude notes on their Instagram handles.

Re-sharing Priyanka’s post, Alia wrote, “2 years ago, 3 girls came together with 1 dream. There was only one place to go to make that dream come true; to 4 of the funnest dream-makers and storytellers in the business @faroutakhtar @zoieakhtar @reemakagti1 @ritesh_sid And now 50 Zoom calls later, countless laughs later, with hearts full of love and excitement, Here we are. #JeeLeZaraa.”

On the other hand, Katrina wrote, “This makes my heart smile. I just love these girls and being around each other is just too much fun always – combine that with a great script, awesome director, and a road trip and the sky’s the limit.”

Replying to Katrina in reference to her role in the blockbuster hit ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, producer Ritesh Sidhwani commented, “You are on the driving seat this time,” using a wink emoticon.

‘Jee Le Zaraa’, which is written by Farhan, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti, will go on floors in 2022. (ANI)

PM Modi Launches Ujjwala 2.0, Hands Over LPG

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) by handing over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections at Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba through video conferencing.

Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were also present at the event.
While Puri was attending the event through video conferencing, Yogi Adityanath was present at the venue.

“Universal access to LPG empowered eight crore Indian women to lead smoke-free healthy lives. #PMUjjwala2 lays the basis for the transformation of an additional 1 crore poor families,” Puri tweeted.

Speaking at the event, Yogi Adityanath said, “In Uttar Pradesh, atleast 1.5 crore families were benefitted under the first phase of the Ujjwala scheme. During COVID, PM Modi provided all the beneficiaries with free cylinders for six months.”

During Ujjwala 1.0 launched in 2016, a target was set to provide LPG connections to five crore women members of below poverty line (BPL) households.

Subsequently, the scheme was expanded in April 2018 to include women beneficiaries from seven more categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most backward classes, tea garden, forest dwellers, Islands).

Also, the target was revised to eight crores LPG connections. This target was achieved in August 2019, seven months ahead of the target date.

In the Union Budget for the financial year 2021-22, provision for an additional one crore LPG connection under the PMUY scheme was announced. These one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) aim to provide deposit-free LPG connections to those low-income families who could not be covered under the earlier phase of PMUY.

Along with a deposit-free LPG connection, Ujjwala 2.0 will provide the first refill and hotplate free of cost to the beneficiaries.

Also, the enrollment procedure will require minimal paperwork. In Ujjwala 2.0, migrants will not be required to submit ration cards or address proof. A self-declaration for both ‘family declaration’ and as a ‘proof of address’ will suffice. (ANI)
