Neeraj Chopra’s Bumpy Ride To Olympic Glory

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Saturday created history and won India’s first-ever gold medal at track and field in the Olympics, but the 23-year-old’s journey has been through its share of ups and downs.

In 2019, Neeraj underwent elbow surgery and his participation in the Tokyo Games looked uncertain. However, it seems the stars were aligned for the athlete as the Games were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The javelin thrower has now won the country a gold medal at the Olympics and enthused people.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also taken note of Neeraj Chopra’s injury in 2019 and had conveyed to him his best wishes.

“Neeraj, you’re a brave youngster who has been making India proud continuously! Everyone is praying for your quick and complete recovery,” PM Modi had tweeted on May 4, 2019.

Neeraj Chopra had congratulated PM Modi over victory in the Lok Sabha elections and getting a successive second term as Prime Minister.

“My heartiest congratulations to our prime minister @narendramodi sir on this historic win. May our country achieve new heights under your leadership.#Election2019Results,” Neeraj Chopra had tweeted.

To this tweet from the javelin thrower, PM Modi had said: “Thanks, @Neeraj_chopra1. I hope you are recovering well. My best wishes.”

Earlier this year, Neeraj Chopra had highlighted how he has got every facility possible to train to the best of his ability for the Games.

“As far as preparations for @Tokyo2020 are concerned, all my requirements have been taken care of in the best possible way. I’m training in Europe currently and am thankful for the efforts made by the government and the Indian embassy, despite the tough visa rules,” he had said in a tweet.

Neeraj Chopra on Saturday threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to pick the gold at the Olympics.

He began his quest for a medal with a massive throw of 87.03 meters and was leading the pack after the end of the first attempt. He bettered it with the second throw of 87.58m. Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter Account Suspended Temporarily

The Congress on Saturday said that the Twitter account of party leader Rahul Gandhi has been temporarily suspended and he will stay connected through other social media platforms and continue to raise the voice of people.

The party said in a tweet that due process is being followed for the restoration of Gandhi’s Twitter handle.
“Shri Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter account has been temporarily suspended & due process is being followed for its restoration. Until then, he will stay connected with you all through his other SM platforms & continue to raise his voice for our people & fight for their cause. Jai Hind!” the party said in a tweet.

Rahul Gandhi on Saturday used the photo-sharing app Instagram to send his congratulatory messages over the gold medal won by javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and the bronze medal won by Bajrang Punia at the Tokyo Olympics.

Twitter had on Friday taken down Rahul Gandhi’s tweet that revealed the identity of the relatives of a rape and murder victim in Delhi. The victim was a minor.

A Delhi-based lawyer Vineet Jindal had on Thursday filed a complaint with Delhi Police against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly disclosing Delhi’s Nangal rape victim’s identity.

He complained that the Congress leader had shared his own photo along with the father and mother of the child victim which disclosed the identity of the minor victim.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had on Tuesday issued notice to Twitter India asking it to take action over the Congress leader violating the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act by “revealing” Delhi’s Nangal rape victim’s identity.

Rahul Gandhi met on Wednesday met the family of the minor girl who was allegedly raped, murdered and cremated without her parents’ consent in Delhi’s Old Nangal crematorium. (ANI)

Weekly Update: A Bold Tax Reform; Satyajit Ray Centenary; Modi’s Plans

In what is perhaps one of the biggest and boldest changes in Indian tax laws, the Indian government has introduced a bill in Parliament that will do away with the nine-year-old law that taxed companies, particularly multinational corporations, retrospectively. Corporations such as Britain’s Cairn Energy and Vodafone Group had been disputing the Indian tax authorities in cases filed in international courts that cost billions of dollars.

But first, a quick recap. The law, which came into force in 2012, required international companies to pay huge taxes related to acquisitions of assets that they had made in the past. The retrospective tax law was adopted after a Supreme Court verdict in favour of Vodafone. It all started with Vodafone’s acquisition of 67 per cent stake in Hutchison Whampoa’s operations in India for over $11 billion (₹81,947 crore) in 2007. International companies which had acquired assets of Indian companies before then were told they had to pay huge amounts.

Last week’s decision to nullify taxes on indirect transfer of Indian assets will mean that companies involved in disputes over retrospective tax can get refunds without interest and costs. In particular, the telecoms giant Vodafone could get a big relief as its stock had crashed on reports that it owed the Indian government ₹22,000 crore ($2.5 billion) in the form of licence and spectrum fees. Vodaofone’s Indian shareholder Kumar Mangalam Birla had earlier last week written to the government asking for it to take over his group’s 27% stake in the company that is burdened by debt owing to the retrospective tax liabilities. He had also stepped down as non-executive chairman of the company.

If the law to do away with the retrospective tax comes into force, the tax claims amounting to $2 billion against Vodafone will be nullified. Similarly, Cairn, which has a claim against it of more than $1.2 billion, would not have to pay it. Cairn has been in a legal tussle with the Indian government over the past few years. The disputes have been costly, both for India and the multinational corporations that have been fighting against the retrospective tax claims.

At least a dozen corporations have been involved in legal cases against the government over such claims. The retrospective tax regime was adopted by the BJP government’s predecessor, the Congress-led UPA but because the law remained in force, the current government has been involved in them.

Abolishing the law will have direct as well as indirect consequences for the Indian economy. For one, companies that are embroiled in legal disputes and burdened by huge tax claims will get relief and may re-evaluate their expansion plans in India, hopefully, positively. And second, many multinationals that had reconsidered entering or expanding their presence in India on account of the retrospective tax could now be more inclined to make bigger investments.

Satyajit Ray’s Centenary

The late film director Satyajit Ray’s 100th birth anniversary is this year. Ray, who is the best known Indian film director internationally, won an honorary Oscar in 1992 just before he died. Unfortunately, in his centenary year, many of his 29 feature films are in a physically degraded state. However, the subscription based Criterion Channel has been streaming 16 of them in a series titled “Satyajit Ray at 100”. Ray’s films, especially the Apu trilogy, comprising Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (1959), found worldwide acclaim and earned for him a place among all-time great film-makers such as Japan’s Akiro Kurosawa, Italy’s Federico Fellini, and Sweden’s Ingmar Bergman. Ray was a polymath, though. He not only wrote and directed his films but he also scored the music for them. His scripts, typically complemented with frame-by-frame sketches, were astonishingly cinematic.

While the 19 films that Criterion is streaming are restored versions, the good news is that some of his other films are also being restored. The Academy Film Archive, part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which awards the Oscars, has a grant to help preserve and restore the great auteur’s works. Ray’s films, which many younger generation Indians may be sadly unaware of, deserve to be preserved for posterity.

Modi To Plan Strategies For Next 3 Years

Next week Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who recently reconstituted his council of ministers, will be helming a three-day conclave to work out strategies and an agenda for the three years that remain of the government’s term. What that agenda will be would be interesting to note, not least because Mr Modi’s government has been facing several challenges in the past two years.

First, the handling of the Covid pandemic has come under severe criticism. Till a few months back, India’s inadequate healthcare infrastructure was in sharp focus as millions of Indians needed hospitalisation and other medical care such as oxygen cylinders. Then, there has been an impact on the economy. As GDP growth rates turned southwards, estimates suggest millions of Indians have seen their income levels fall drastically with many being forced back into poverty. Rising prices, fuelled by sharp increases in petrol prices, have not made things easier.

Mr Modi is expected to review the work of all his ministries at the conclave and set fresh targets. While the economy and the fallout from the pandemic will probably be on top of the agenda, there are also political considerations that he will have to consider. Seven states are expected to go to the polls next year, including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Earlier this year, despite aggressive campaigning strategies, his party, the BJP, failed to make a dent in West Bengal. The forthcoming state elections, followed by 2024’s parliamentary elections, will likely influence much of the government’s agenda for the future.

Porn Case: Court To Decide On Gehna’s Bail On Aug 12

A Mumbai Sessions Court on Saturday reserved its order on the anticipatory bail application filed by actor Gehna Vashishth in connection with a pornography case filed by the property cell of the Mumbai Police.

Arguments in the hearing of Vashishth’s bail plea have concluded and the court said it will pronounce its order on August 12.

Mumbai Police police had opposed the actor’s anticipatory bail application and told the court that her custody was crucial for the investigation of the case and also for the identification of other accused wanted in this case.

On August 3, the court had refused to grant interim protection from arrest to Vasisth in connection with the pornography racket case and had asked the police to file their reply on Vasisth’s anticipatory bail plea.

On July 29, a case was registered at Malvani Police Station against Vasisth and three producers of the company of businessman Raj Kundra and handed over to the Property Cell of Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

Gehana Vashisht alias Vandana Tiwari is currently out on bail after her arrest in February 2021 in another pornography case. She got bail after four months.

Meanwhile, the order on businessman Raj Kundra’s anticipatory bail application in Sessions Court was not pronounced today due to the unavailability of the concerned judge in connection with the pornography case.

Kundra has filed this plea in Maharashtra cyber’s case of pornography.

Earlier today, the Bombay High Court dismissed applications filed by the businessman Raj Kundra and Ryan Thorpe challenging Magistrate Court’s remand order and seeking immediate release in connection with the pornography case.

On July 27, a court in Mumbai sent actor Shilpa Shetty’s husband and businessman Raj Kundra along with his associate Ryan Thorpe to judicial custody for 14 days. Kundra was arrested by police on July 19 along with 11 other people on charges related to the alleged creation of pornographic films. (ANI)
