Dreaded Vice & Virtue Ministry Back In Afghanistan Govt

With the situation gradually unravelling in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, it is becoming clearer that the new version of the outfit is no different than the one which used to rule the war-torn country in the 1990s.

Older generations recall the ultraconservative Islamic regime that saw regular stoning, amputations and public executions during Taliban rule before the US-led invasion that followed the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.
Under the Taliban, which ruled in accordance with a harsh interpretation of Islamic law, women were largely confined to their homes.

Earlier this week, the Taliban formed the interim “Islamic Emirate”, appointing in its new government hardliners who oversaw the fight against the US-led military coalition. The cabinet members consist of many Taliban figures that are on the UN Sanctions List.

According to a report in The Washington Post, in an English-language list of new appointees, the Ministry for Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice was the only name not translated. “A body under the previous government, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, was not included at all, apparently having been disbanded,” the report added.

Experts fears that the return of the ministry meant that the Taliban would not seek to change.

Gul, a Kabul resident said that people have stopped listening to loud music in public due to experiences during the previous Taliban regime. “I personally didn’t see any forced prayers. But there is fear in everyone’s minds,” the local said.

When the Taliban was last in power, the ministry enforced a severe interpretation of Islamic law and Burhanuddin Rabbani, who served as president between 1992 and 1996, created the vice and virtue ministry. However, under the Taliban, their role expanded. Several rights groups had called the institution a “notorious symbol of arbitrary abuses.”

Robert Crews, a historian of Afghanistan at Stanford University said that the ministry was the face of the regime for ordinary people. “It is the institution that most Afghans were likely to encounter, and it is one that the leadership prioritized above all others.”

According to first-person accounts, forces used to patrol the streets and beat people caught listening to music. Moreover, the group also frowned upon dancing, kite-flying and American-style haircuts.

The ministry’s morality police punished those who disobeyed modesty codes, with beards too thin or ankles that showed. “They banished girls from school and women from the workplace and the public eye. A woman could not venture outside without a male guardian,” the Washington Post report said.

Signs of such incidents have started re-appearing on the street of Kabul.

Afghan women, who were protesting against the all-male Afghanistan’s new interim government on Wednesday in Kabul, were driven away by the Taliban.

The Taliban used whips and sticks against the women protesters in the latest crackdown on dissent in Afghanistan, reported CNN. Videos and images received by CNN show the women chanting, “Long live the women of Afghanistan.”

Some held placards declaring “No government can deny the presence of women” and “I will sing freedom over and over.” The Taliban also beat up journalists covering the demonstration, according to witnesses.

One woman at Wednesday’s protest said, “We have gathered here to protest the recent announcement of the government where there is no woman representation in this government.”

She said a few of the protesters were “hit with whips and they told us to go to our homes and recognize and accept the Emirate. Why should we accept the Emirate while no inclusion or rights have been given to us?” (ANI)

Most Muslim Countries Failed To Imbibe Sharia Values: Mufti

A day after she said Taliban can set an example for the world if they follow the real Sharia law, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said her remarks concerning Sharia have been “deliberately distorted” and she can’t point fingers since most countries that claim to uphold Sharia have failed to imbibe its true values.

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, who made a series of tweets, also said that the Afghanistan crisis has only worsened increasing Islamophobia.

“Not surprised that my statement on Sharia has been deliberately distorted. Cant point fingers since most countries that claim to uphold Sharia have failed to imbibe its true values. They are only fixated with restricting women through do’s and dont’s, dress codes etc,” she said.

“The real Medina Charter stipulates equal rights for men, women and minorities. In fact, women have been granted property, social, legal and marriage rights. Non-Muslims have the same rights inc religious freedom and equality of law which is the essence of secularism,” she added.

She also cited examples of “emancipated and empowered women” in Islamic history.

“Hazrat Khadija Tul Kubra, Prophet SWA first wife was an independent and successful business woman. Hazrat Ayesha Siddique led the Battle of camel and headed a force of 13,000 soldiers. Islamic history is full of such examples of emancipated & empowered women,” she said.

The PDP chief said Muslims are always expected to prove that they don’t stand for violence and her remarks were being used “as click bait to further this impression”.

“But at a time when India has become so polarised, there is increasing Islamphobia and Afghanistan crisis has only worsened it. Muslims are always expected to prove that they don’t stand for violence. I can see why my statement is being used as click bait to further this impression,” she said.

The PDP chief had talked to reporters in Kulgam on Wednesday and said “Taliban is emerging as a reality”.

“They had an image of anti-human rights during their first rule. They have come again and if they really want to govern Afghanistan, then they should the real Sharia law. They can set an example for the world if they follow the real Sharia law which includes women rights, children and others and not their interpretation of Sharia,” she had said. (ANI)

CIA Head, Pak Army Chief Discuss Afghanistan Situation

US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William Burns had a meeting with Pakistan Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, during which they discussed the current situation of Afghanistan.

According to a statement by Pakistan military media wing–the ISPR– the discussions included regional security situation and the current developments in Afghanistan, Dawn reported.

“It was reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to cooperating with its international partners for peace in the region and ensuring a stable and prosperous future for Afghan people,” the statement said.

CIA chief’s visit to Pakistan came a day after he visited New Delhi and met Indian officials.

His visit to India and Pakistan comes amidst the fluid and precarious security situation in Afghanistan, which plunged into a crisis last month and where the Taliban recently announced its interim government.

The cabinet members consist of many Taliban figures who are considered hardliners. The list announced by chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid is dominated by members of the group’s old guard.

Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund has been appointed as Prime Minister with two deputies Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Molavi Abdul Salam Hanafi.

Burns had during his visit to Afghanistan last month met the Taliban leadership, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

This was in the context of the evolving security situation in the war-torn country, which was challenging for the Americans to evacuate Americans, Afghans and several nationals from other countries. (ANI)

Haryana Govt Is Symbol Of Atrocity Against Farmers: Harish Rawat

Lending support to farmers’ agitation in Karnal and condemning the lathi-charge against the farmers last month, Congress leader Harish Rawat on Thursday said that the Haryana government has become a “symbol of atrocity” against farmers.

Speaking to ANI, Rawat said that the whole country supports farmers’ demands and the three farm laws enacted by the Centre have no moral standing.
“You are claiming to formulate laws to benefit farmers but they are themselves saying that these laws are against their interests. How can these laws have any moral standing then?” he asked.

“Everyone, including Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, should know that fighting against farmers and God will only bring destruction. This Central government is fighting against farmers. Not only is this going to affect our agriculture, but will also have an adverse effect on our economy,” he claimed.

The farmers in Karnal have been demonstrating outside the mini secretariat since Tuesday demanding action against the officials who ordered lathi charge against protesters in the district on August 28.

A Kisan Mahapanchayat was also held in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday against the three farm laws.

Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws.

Several rounds of discussion have been held between the farmer leaders and the Centre but the impasse remains. (ANI)

UP Polls 2022: BJP To Hold OBC Meet In Ayodhya; CM Yogi To Attend

With an eye on the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Bharatiya Janata Party is set to hold a crucial strategy meet in Ayodhya to woo the state’s OBC voters.

The meet, state executive of OBC morcha, scheduled to take place on September 18 in Ayodhya will witness the participation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Ministers.
Apart from top state leadership, all OBC MPs and MLAs of the state too will participate in state executive to be presided over by BJP’s National OBC Morcha president K Laxman.

With more than 50 per cent of OBC voters – including Yadav’s and other OBC castes – the community is one of the most influential in the state. Though the party has enjoyed support from the community in previous polls it wants to ensure that the community continues to back the BJP in the 2022 Assembly polls.

The move comes as there is a belief that a lack of adequate political representation for the community may become an issue. Though the issue has been understood to be addressed in the recent expansion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers.

Several ministers from the OBC communities from the state were given berths in the expansion with the non-Yadav OBC category leaders, Kurmis like Anupriya Patel and Pankaj Choudhary, being adjusted.

Speaking to ANI, BJP’s National OBC Morcha president K Laxman said that the Modi government has taken many steps to ensure that OBCs get proper representation.

“The government approved 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in medical education and has given proper representation to the community in Union Cabinet. We held Jan Ashirwad Yatra for those ministers across the country. No other Prime Minister or party has taken care of the political representation of OBCs like the Modi government did,” added Laxman while confirming about state executive meeting of OBC morcha in Ayodhya.

Choosing Ayodhya too is a calibrated move. Ayodhya has become the epicentre of politics in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh with parties like Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Assaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) holding rallies to woo their respective vote banks in the city.

The OBC Morcha national president said that the morcha will play a role in ensuring the smooth victory of the party in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls by mobilising its workers.

“It’s a crucial meet which will be attended by CM and deputy CMs and will be followed by national executive meet of morcha in October. There will be sammelans for OBCs and how these are to be planned will be finalised in this meet,” added Laxman.

Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled to take place early next year.

In the 2017 Assembly polls, the BJP won 325 seats out of a total of 403 Assembly seats. Samajwadi Party and its allies won 54 seats, BSP won 19 seats and others won 5 seats respectively. (ANI)

Param Bir Misled Deshmukh, Uddhav In Antilia Case: Nawab

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Nawab Malik has alleged that former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh deliberately “misled” Anil Deshmukh as well as Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray in the Antilia bomb scare case.

“NIA’s charge sheet in Antilia case raised many questions. Sachin Waze was framed as the main accused. From day one, we are saying that former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh levelled allegations against Anil Deshmukh to save himself,” Malik told the media persons here on Wednesday.

“Singh misled the Chief Minister and others. Singh met Waze behind closed doors. Findings of the charge sheet imply that the person behind manipulation is not being questioned. He framed the minister on the behest of BJP,” Malik said.

This came after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday stated that Sachin Waze hatched the conspiracy to place the Scorpio-laden with Gelatine sticks (explosives) and a threat note addressed to RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani near his Antilia resident to “regain his clout as an ace detective” after he was reinstated from his suspension in 2020.

The agency said that Waze, an Assistant Police Inspector in Maharashtra Police, was under suspension and was reinstated in 2020, and posted in the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai Police. In 2004, Waze was suspended in the Khwaja Yunus custodial death case.

Reacting to Nawab Malik’s allegations over Param Bir Singh, Maharashtra BJP MLA Ashish Shelar asked Malik to take help of the judiciary if they have issues with the charge sheet.

“NIA is doing its job. Those who want to raise questions on its charge sheet can go to court. NIA’s charge sheet should not be used to play politics,” Shelar said.

A businessman Bimal Agrawal has filed this complaint against former CP.

This is the fourth extortion case against Singh and the second filed in Mumbai.

Earlier on July 23, a case of extortion was registered against Param Bir Singh at Kopari Police Station in Thane City Police Commissionerate.

The Enforcement Directorate had previously summoned the former Mumbai Police Commissioner to record a statement in connection with the Rs 100 crore money laundering case against ex-Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

Param Bir Singh, on July 12, sought more time from the ED to appear before it ahead of his summons citing health reasons.

Singh, in his letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, had alleged that Deshmukh had indulged in “malpractices” and asked for suspended Mumbai Police officer Sachin Waze to collect Rs 100 crore every month.

Waze was arrested in March in connection with the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) probe into the case of recovery of an explosives-laden SUV near Mukesh Ambani’s house in Mumbai and the subsequent murder of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiran.

The case against the former Home Minister was registered on May 11. (ANI)

China Endorses Taliban Govt, Pledges $31mn Aid

China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday announced USD 31 million aid to Afghanistan, endorsing the new caretaker government “Islamic Emirate” of Taliban.

Hua Chunyin, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, said the decision was announced during the first meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries and would be “for emergency use to the Afghan people”, reported CNN.

China will provide almost USD 31 million worth of food, winter weather supplies, vaccines, and medicine to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also announced that China will donate 3 million vaccine doses to Afghanistan in the first batch, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua. It is not clear when the vaccines are scheduled to be delivered, reported CNN.

Speaking at the Foreign Minister’s meeting in Beijing via video link, Wang also said the United States and its allies were more obligated than any other country to provide economic and humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

Following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and subsequent Taliban takeover, Wang said the US should “assume their responsibilities” in the country by helping ensure its development and stability while “respecting the sovereignty and independence of Afghanistan,” Xinhua reported.

On Tuesday, the Taliban announced the formation of a hardline interim government for Afghanistan, filling top posts with veterans of the Islamist militant group who oversaw the 20-year fight against the US-led military coalition.

China shares a 50-mile (80 kilometres) border with China’s western region of Xinjiang at the end of the narrow Wakhan Corridor and has a substantial investment in the wider region through Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Following a high-profile meeting between Taliban leaders and the Chinese foreign minister in Tianjin in July, Wang called the Taliban “an important military and political force in Afghanistan” and declared that they would play “an important role in the country’s peace, reconciliation and reconstruction process”, reported CNN.

In return, the Taliban called China a “good friend” and pledged to “never allow any forces to use the Afghan territory to engage in acts detrimental to China,” according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry at the meeting.

Last week, a Taliban spokesperson called for closer relations with Beijing in an interview with Chinese state broadcaster CGTN.

“China is a very important and strong country in our neighbourhood, and we have had very positive and good relations with China in the past,” Zabihullah Mujahid said. “We want to make these relations even stronger and want to improve the mutual trust level.”(ANI)
