COVID-19 Testing Is Necessary To Break Chain Of Transmission

Amid the continuous rise in COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant, a health expert says it is important that we get tested to break the chain of transmission as avoiding the test and just assuming the presence or absence of COVID infection will lead to carelessness.

“If you just presume that you are COVID positive without any test, you would not take isolation measures as strictly as you would have taken, if you had the confirmed report. Therefore, it is important that you get yourself tested and then go through strict isolation measures so that we can break the transmission chain,” said Dr Arvind Kumar, senior surgeon, Medanta hospital.
Raising concerns around the common misconception among the public regarding the virus, Dr Kumar said, “Don’t consider this virus as common cold because hospitalization has risen.”

“Three things have come to light after analyzing data gathered in last three weeks. First, active COVID-19 cases have seen a steep rise by many folds. Second, the rate of hospitalizations has increased but not at the same rate as witnessed in the rise of cases and last one being, the death toll has also gone up several folds,” said Dr Kumar.

“In the midst of an increase in Omicron cases, people are getting a serious disease. Patients are getting admitted in ICU, they are requiring oxygen support and there have been some cases of death also,” he added.

However, he also said that this wave is not as dangerous as the Delta wave.

The number of ICU admissions, oxygen requirement and death is not as frantic and as psychologically daunting as it was in the second wave last year. However, as more Omicron variant cases are being reported from every country, we can say that Omicron has replaced delta,” he said.

Stressing on the need to follow precautions in the fight against coronavirus and especially the new Omicron variant of the virus, he said, “Vaccines are less effective against Omicron. It is important to take precautions because if the number of cases increases then the situation will become worst for hospitals.”

“Up until now, data clearly shows that Omicron is more infectious than delta, but analysis shows that it is comparatively milder than delta in terms of causing serious disease. The vaccine unresponsiveness or vaccine failure is also higher with Omicron,” said Dr Kumar.

“If anybody has an impression that it is like common flu, then we need to convince them otherwise, we are going to face serious problems because if a massive number of people get infections at the same time, we might be facing a situation like last year. It is best avoided,” he added.

Meanwhile, India reported 2,47,417 fresh COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Thursday.

Today’s fresh COVID-19 cases are about 27 per cent higher than compared to yesterday’s figures. On Wednesday, the country logged 1,94,720 new COVID-19 cases.

Out of the fresh infections of COVID-19 logged in the last 24 hours in the country, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 was found in 5,488 cases.

With the administration of over 76,32,024 vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 vaccination coverage stands at 1,54,61,39,465, said the bulletin on Thursday. (ANI)

Disturbing Social Trend in The Country

‘Those Who Normalise Bulli Bai Creators, Are Breeding Rapists’

Haleema, 22, a law student in Uttar Pradesh, says communally targeted hate apps indicate a disturbing social trend in the country

I am shocked and aghast, both as a girl and a law student, as how easy it is for people to create derogatory and misogynistic apps like Sulli Deal and Bulli Bai. Kya naya sal ka tohfa diya gaya hai Muslim women ko, jaise unki koi izzat nahi (What a New Year gift! As if Muslim women have no privacy). This level of misogyny, targeted misogyny at Muslim women is scary.

The people who were visiting these apps gleefully must understand that the creators of such apps have sick minds and in future they can turn their hatred to any group, including Hindu women. If we normalise such behaviour, it will breed heinous criminals such as rapists. The safety and modesty of women should be taken seriously.

I had no idea about the Sulli Deal app and came to know about it only after I witnessed the outrage against the Bulli Bai app. A part of me wonders if the timing of the app creation and subsequent arrest of the creators has anything to with the upcoming UP elections.

As a law student I believe that no matter which party comes to power, cyber laws must be strengthened. We were anyway living a large part of our lives virtually and with the pandemic the shift has been even bigger; social media presence is inescapable.

As women in general and Muslims in particular, we also need to be vocal in our protest against such happenings and do everything in our capacity to bring about a change. Wherever we see a scope for social sensitisation we should take part in it. Yet, I still feel worried about young and small town girls who get easily scared about such matters and in extreme cases it might even become victims of honour killing or mistreatment. Or they may suffer silently, undergo depression….

I am happy that certain prominent Muslim women like RJ Sayema are talking about it and not sweeping the issue under the rug. Many vocal Muslim women’s pictures were used in the app. However, I do have faith in God. The very women they are trying to quieten have shown nerves of steel during the Shaheen Bagh protests. If we are being targeted for our faith I believe it is also our faith that will save us. God will take care of us through every trial the life throws at us.

Haleema finds it sad that a woman named Shweta Singh (right) was also involved in the mysoginistic app creation

The saddest thing for me in this whole fiasco is the involvement of another woman, Shweta Singh. How could the seeds of hatred run so deep that a woman could think of auctioning off other women? And I wish youngsters like Neeraj Bishnoi had rather used their technical skill set in solving problems that the pandemic has given rise to. These are misdirected, vulnerable youngsters but very shatir too. The government should take strict action against the creators but also not forget that it is a reflection of a larger social malady: hatred for Muslims.

Until a few years ago I was an Indian Muslim, but now we are seen as Muslims only I guess. Even young kids know what religious divides are all about. I haven’t been mercilessly trolled online, though an othering of the identity is definitely there, but this takes things to a whole new level.

And yet again I keep believing in the idea of India, where the culture is one of love. I hope and pray the communal hatred will soon die down. If the pandemic has shown us anything, it is that we need to support rather than hate each other in these times of global crisis.

BJP MLA Vinay Shakya Quits Party, To Follow Swami Prasad Maurya

Days after UP’s Social Welfare Minister Swami Prasad Maurya resigned from BJP, another MLA from Bidhuna Vinay Shakya has also put down his papers on Thursday. This is a third BJP lawmaker who is resigning from the party in as many days.
Shakya, his brother Devesh Shakya and their mother Draupadi Shakya came to Maurya’s residence on Thursday and handed over his resignation letter.
On Wednesday, Dara Singh Chauhan, who was the environment and forest minister in the Yogi Adityanath cabinet, also resigned from the BJP. Chauhan had defected to BJP from BSP in 2015.
In the resignation letter, Shakya wrote, “In the last five years of the BJP regime, leaders from Dalit, marginalised section and minority communities were not given importance and not respected. Beside this, the state government ignored the marginalised section of community, farmers and unemployed youngsters. This is the reason why I am resigning from the primary membership of BJP. Swami Prasad Maurya is the voice of suppressed and exploited people and I am with him.” (ANI)

Kejriwal Remains Non-Committal On AAP’s Punjab CM Face

On the second day of his Punjab tour, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday remained non-committal on revealing the party’s Chief Ministerial face for the state.
Kejriwal said that he wanted to pitch for the party’s Lok Sabha MP Bhagwant Mann as the Chief Minister. However, he refused to do so as Mann said that let the people of Punjab decide on this.
“Bhagwant Mann is very dear to me, he is like a younger brother. I was also saying that we should make him the CM face for Punjab Assembly elections, but he (Mann) said let the people of Punjab decide this,” Kejriwal said.

“Many political parties believe in putting their family members as the Chief Minister’s face. However, we decided not to follow this,” he added.
The AAP convenor added, “First time in India’s history, people will decide – who should be their CM candidate!”

The party’s convenor also expressed confidence in winning the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls. He said, “Every survey shows AAP is winning Punjab. Thoda saa aur dum, Punjab jeet rahe hain hum! (A little more power, we will win Punjab).”

Mann also addressed the press conference. In his address, Mann said, “We also are Aam Aadmi. Why not declare Chief Minister’s candidate only after asking people? If the Chief Minister is elected by the people himself, then he also gets the confidence that this is ‘our’ man.”
Kejriwal on Thursday announced that people can message and call on the number 70748 70748 to send their suggestions on who should be the Chief Ministerial candidate from AAP for the upcoming Punjab Assembly polls by January 17 till 5 pm.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security breach in Punjab, he said, ” If AAP comes to power, then we will ensure the safety of Prime Minister as well as the safety of 3 crore people of Punjab”.

While Bhagwant Mann said, “the responsibility of the Chief Minister is a big responsibility. CM has to be involved in the sorrow and happiness of the people of the State, so we are issuing a number 70748 70748. You can tell your favourite CM face by calling or messaging on it. I am grateful to the party, even if my duty is to paste the posters, I will do that too, but the faith that CM sahib has placed in me is priceless”.

Punjab Assembly polls are scheduled to be held in a single phase on February 14. The results will be announced on March 10. (ANI)
