Attacks on Christmas Celebrations

‘Christians Faced Subtle Bias Earlier, They Face Violence Now’

Raj Kumar, 24, a Protestant Christian from Bihar pursuing post-graduation in Delhi, says recent attacks on Christmas celebrations in several states is a growing and worrying trend

I’m a Dalit Christian (Protestant) belonging to Siwan in Bihar. Ever since I came to New Delhi for my studies, I have become an even more active member of the Church. Faith is important to me, which is why it pains me to see when one group of people attacks another group of people, just because they are practising their faith.

The recent attacks on Christians during Christmas in several states and the regular attacks on missionary schools is a worrying trend. I believe the very ethos of India, that is pluralism is under attack. As ‘We the people of India’, weren’t we all supposed to be one nation, one people? And I don’t understand the bogeyman of ‘conversion’ that people take recourse to when they attack people of a minority faith. Let me narrate how our family converted to Christianity.

While many people convert willingly because they feel discriminated against, it wasn’t the case with our family. My grandmother is the one who decided to embrace Christianity. My parents had been married for five years but had been unable to conceive. My grandmother went to different places to pray and in that similar vein she visited the church as well.

I was born soon after and she believed it was a miracle, which is why she took up the Christian faith. That was the turning point of her life. Faith is a very private and personal thing and people have different trigger points for different decisions. For me, the church is a like a psychologist, to guide me, motivate me, support me and help me become one with the community as well.

Kumar says radicalisation will have an adverse impact on Indian social fabric

As a child we did feel ‘othered’ as Dalit Christians but not to the extent as it is today. It was subtle, but since the last few years it has become an in-your-face kind of thing. The very people who talk about missionary schools being run by videshi dharm have their own kids getting the best of education in them.

It is the local level leaders and the aam janta that gets brainwashed at the idea of there being an enemy out there. The landlord of our church is a practising, socially active Hindu and says the only thing he wants is the rent on time and nothing more. I wish more people were like him. I worry if individual freedoms will take a complete beating in the coming days.

Reports of lynching have become relatively commonplace and now alongwith Muslims, Christians are being targeted too. Personally I don’t feel scared because I have faith in God. But that doesn’t mean I don’t worry about the impact it is having on society at large.

As per a recent report, a whopping 80% of the food distribution to poor people was disrupted because it was coming from Christian organisations or countries. Shouldn’t we be caring about the poor? The pandemic finally made people feel how those practising a minority faith feel: socially distanced and isolated.

Back home in Bihar there have been news of pastors etc. being attacked. We need to bring back the idea of India and understand that hate constantly wants new targets and when there’s no one left, it turns inwards. I would like to remind everyone the poetic lines by the German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller who said:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Covid Surge: Weekend Curfew Announced In Delhi

In the wake of rising coronavirus cases, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Tuesday decided to impose a weekend curfew in the national capital.

The weekend curfew will be in force from Friday 10 pm to Monday 5 AM. Reports have claimed that all employees of government offices will shift to “Work From Home” mode — barring those associated with the Essential Services category.

“DDMA has decided to impose a curfew in Delhi on Saturdays and Sundays to curb COVID surge. All govt officials except for those engaged in essential services will work from home. 50% workforce of private offices will work from home”, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said while addressing a press conference after the meeting.

To avoid crowding outside metro stations and at bus stands, metro trains and DTC buses will again run at full seating capacity, however, it would be mandatory for commuters to wear masks.

“Cases of Omicron variant have been rapidly rising. Delhi has reported around 11,000 positive cases in the past 8-10 days, of which around 350 patients are in hospital, only 124 patients need oxygen and 7 are on a ventilator”, Sisodia informed.

Indian Army Unfurls Tricolour In Galwan Valley

Indian Army unfurled the Tricolour in the Galwan valley, Ladakh on the occasion of New Year.

As per sources in the security establishment, the Indian Army personnel had hoisted the National flag in Galwan on New Year’s eve. The move comes amid reports in a section of media that claimed that Chinese soldiers had displayed their flag in the region a few days ago.

Earlier, the media reported that the Chinese government had sought to “rename” 15 places in Arunachal Pradesh in its map two days ahead of implementing new border law.

The Indian Government on last Thursday said that it has seen reports of China attempting to rename some places in Arunachal Pradesh “in its own language” and asserted that the border state has been and will always be an integral part of India and “assigning invented names does not alter this fact”.

In response to a media query on reports that China has renamed some places in Arunachal Pradesh in its own language, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had said China had also sought to assign such names in April 2017.

After the Galwan clash in 2020, several rounds of military and diplomatic talks have ended in a stalemate.

Disengagement at some border points did take place but by and large, there is an impasse on complete disengagement. Disengagement at Depsang and Hot Springs remains a key sticky point.

A huge build-up of forces on each side of Eastern Ladakh even during harsh winters indicates that conflict is far from being defused.

India maintains that the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) had been caused by unilateral attempts of the Chinese side to alter the status quo and in violation of the bilateral agreements.

It was therefore necessary that the Chinese side take appropriate steps in the remaining areas so as to restore peace and tranquillity along the LAC in the Western Sector. (ANI)

Wear Saffron Scarf, Fear No Law: Brinda Karat

Communist Party of India (Marxist) senior leader and Politburo member Brinda Karat on Tuesday slammed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Kailash Vijayvargiya for supporting religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj, arrested for allegedly using deregotory comments against Mahatma Gandhi, and said that the “biggest tragedy for the country is that leaders are using saffron scarf to protect all anti-constitutional and anti-national elements”.

Speaking to ANI Brinda Karat said,” the glorification of Gandhiji’s killers by the BJP and the Sangh Parivar is a clear fact that today the biggest tragedy of the country is that the leaders are using a shield. This saffron scarf is being used to protect all the anti-constitutional anti-national elements. Put a saffron scarf on your neck and then you are free from the law”.
Former Rajya Sabha MP Brinda Karat further attacked BJP and said that “Whatever crime you commit, put the saffron scarf on the neck and immediately BJP will come to save. The same message is being tried in Haridwar, later in Raipur and now in Ghaziabad”

Earlier today, BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya slammed the Opposition for not taking action against those who raised anti-India slogans and questioned the arrest of religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj.

Speaking to the media, Vijayvargiya said, “We have seen slogans like “Bharat Tere Tukde Honge” and “Inshallah, Inshallah” were raised in the country and Rahul Gandhi himself went there to pat their back. Many opposition party members, Communist Party, AAP went there. If someone talks against India and talks about the division of India, then you patted their back.”

He further said that there is a need to be a bit more liberal towards religious leaders.

Kalicharan Maharaj was arrested by Chhattisgarh Police from Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh for his alleged derogatory remarks against Mahatma Gandhi and provocative statements against minorities at ‘Dharam Sansad’ (religious council) held in Raipur on December 26.
