GST For MRO Aviation Reduced To 5%

The government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate on domestic maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services to 5 per cent from 18 per cent in order to support the aviation sector, Minister of State for Civil Aviation General (Retd) V K Singh said on Monday.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said the government has taken several steps to meet the increasing demand in the aviation sector in the future.
“Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate has been reduced from 18 per cent to 5 per cent for domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services,” the minister said.

In the written reply, the minister noted that the average number of passenger carried in the pre-COVID financial year (2019-20) was around 4 lakh per day. On 6th March 2022, domestic airlines in India carried around 3.7 lakh passengers.

“The number of daily air passengers may cross pre-COVID levels in a few months,” he said.

The minister said the central government has taken up the issue of reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) with the states and the union territories.

Eleven States/UTs have reduced the VAT on ATF to below 5 per cent. These States/UTs include Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadar & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Aamir Khan Turns 57

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who turned 57 on Monday, is a name that is often considered synonymous with perfection in the Hindi film industry.

Born to Mohammed Aamir Hussain Khan and Zeenat Hussain in 1965, the actor is the recipient of numerous awards, including nine Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, and an AACTA Award. In 2003, he was also honoured with the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.
Aamir, in his almost 3-decade long career, has made a name for himself as an actor, director and producer, by taking the less-beaten path and making choices that are both unconventional and unexpected.

Here’s taking a look back at Aamir’s work to understand how he became one of the biggest and most influential actors in Bollywood today.

Sarfarosh (1999)

Considered as one of the finest cop-dramas to have ever come out of Bollywood, this gem of a film has Aamir playing a no-nonsense police officer ACP Rathore with complete effect. Although the basic plot wasn’t very original, the subject treatment is what made it an interesting watch.

Aamir’s character wasn’t that of a stereotypical cop, instead, he was self-righteous, arrogant, and doesn’t mind having a foot race against the criminals.

Lagaan (2001)

Aamir achieved new heights of success by working on this Ashutosh Gowariker directorial which revolved around a cricket match between India and England in order to get rid of the agricultural debts in a village that rarely receives rainfall.

It was the last Indian film to have been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Foreign Language Film category, which is considered to be among the most competitive ones.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

The film, which was Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut, is considered pathbreaking when it comes to making cinema about friendship as it revolutionized Bollywood in many ways. It was the first film that talked about setting boundaries and the importance of empathy in any relationship.

From the way, it was shot to the costume design and even the dialogues, all appealed to the younger generation in such a way that it gained cult status.

Rang De Basanti (2006)

The movie showed a bunch of hedonistic and irreverent youngsters playing the part of freedom fighters and eventually awakening to the fact that nothing much has changed. It spoke the language of rebel, zeal, the idea of collective justice and displayed the power of the youth in its right sense.

This movie was an extremely unconventional film for its time but still, it went on to win the National Film Award for Best Film that year. Aamir’s acting prowess only gave the much-required boost for it to reach a larger audience.

Dangal (2016)

In the movie, Aamir chose to play an ageing, overweight father to four girls who leaves no stone unturned to introduce his daughters to the world of wrestling. ‘Dangal’ took a jibe on sexist issues and hit the right note on the girl power.

Also, Aamir’s transformation from a young wrestler to a 60-year-old wrestler father of two grown-up girls was absolutely terrific.

Meanwhile, keeping in mind Aamir’s diverse filmography, fans can rest assured that the best work from the actor is yet to come. Currently, he is awaiting the release of his upcoming film ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ that stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Naga Chaitanya in pivotal roles. (ANI)

Channi Not Invited In Bhagwant’s Swearing-In

The swearing-in ceremony of Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann as Punjab Chief Minister on March 16 will be a low-profile event with the absence of big political leaders.

The Aam Admi Party (AAP) bagged a landslide victory in the Punjab Assembly elections. Mann, who was the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, will take the oath on March 16 at the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’s native village, Khatkar Kalan. Mann has invited Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to the oath-taking ceremony.
According to AAP sources, apart from Kejriwal, no other Chief Minister of any state will be present in the swearing-in of Bhagwant Mann. Similarly, no Union Minister or any big leader of national level has been invited for this oath-taking ceremony. Only AAP leaders and local leaders of Punjab will be present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Sources said current caretaker Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has also not been invited to the swearing-in ceremony of Mann. However, all 117 MLAs have been invited to the ceremony. Further, the family and people close to Bhagwant Mann have been invited. These include several artists associated with Punjab.

Earlier on Monday, Mann invited people of Punjab to come to the swearing-in ceremony through a video message.

Mann, who was contesting from Dhuri assembly constituency in Sangrur district, won by a margin of 58,206 votes over Congress’ Dalvir Singh Goldy.

AAP registered a landslide victory in the Punjab polls with 92 seats, pushing most of its rivals to the margins. Congress had won 18 seats in the 117-member Assembly. (ANI)

The Kashmir Files: Anupam Kher Reacts To Congress’s Statement

Actor Anupam Kher attended the press conference of his recently released film ‘The Kashmir Files’ in New Delhi on Monday, along with the film’s director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri and actor-producer Pallavi Joshi.

The film has brought the spotlight on the killings and forced exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the late 1980s and afterwards.
Amid the buzz, the Kerala unit of Congress claimed in a tweet, now deleted, that more Muslims were killed in Jammu and Kashmir during 1990-2007 than Pandits.

Responding to this after the press conference, Kher told ANI, “The kind of love that the storm has created from this film, the kind of people who are going to watch this film, what Kerala Congress has said is not important. I think they are trying to find what are the opinions of the actors or director of the film. I don’t want to give them that pleasure.”

He added, “There is a democracy in our country, everyone has constitutional rights, so let them speak. But slowly, it seems like no one is listening to them because they do not talk about anything in the nation’s interest. They do not talk about how to take the country forward. There is destruction in everything they say, there is no constructive thing. So, why should we talk about such people who have no love for the country and have no love for the people who have been living as refugees in their own country? I pity them. Unfortunately, they are in very pathetic condition.”

Kher also talked about his crucial role in representing the Kashmiri Pandits.

He said, “‘Kashmir Files’ is not just a film for me, it is a wound for me that has not been filled in life for years and it might never be filled. The kind of lives my relatives, friends have lived 32 years back, when they were thrown out from their houses, environment, jobs, city and villages. Later their tragedy was not acknowledged by the people in the country. I was representing all those 5 lakh people whose exodus took place on January 19, 1990.”

He also shared his acting process of taking inspiration from his personal life.

He said, “Pushkar Nath was my father’s name and I kept this name in the movie so before every shot, I thought of him that if he would’ve been in this situation then how he would’ve reacted. This thought process became realistic for me.”

Kher concluded by sharing that he tried his best to feel the pain of the people he portrayed.

“I say without any diffidence that my tears in every shot were real. After every shot, I have cried dreadfully. Not because of me, but because of all those people. After doing a scene, I would go to the hotel, eat food and take shower, but what about the people who I have portrayed. Were they killed or did they flee away in that truck or were their sisters and mothers were raped? That thought used to make my heart tremble,” he signed off.

The film, which was released in theatres on March 11, also stars Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi in pivotal roles. (ANI)

International Flights To Operate With 100 % Capacity From March 27

The services of all international passenger flights will resume by March 27, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia informed Rajya Sabha on Monday.

The Minister made the announcement during Question Hour as the Upper House assembled for its second part of the Budget Session after one month’s break.
“All regular international flights will operate in 100 per cent capacity by March 27 as the coronavirus situation in India has improved now,” Scindia said.

The government had banned all international scheduled flights for a week starting March 23, 2020. The ban stretched for nearly two years in the midst of a raging pandemic.

However, special international flights have been operating between India and about 35 other countries since July 2020 under the air bubble.

The move is expected to boost international tourism and will help soften airfares’ which have been soaring due to an increase in crude oil prices.

While the government had earlier planned to resume international flights on March 15, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which necessitated relief flights to bring back stranded Indians in Ukraine, delayed the process.

Ministry of Civil Aviation recently also announced “after having recognised the increased vaccination coverage across the globe and in consultation with the stakeholders, the government of India has decided to resume scheduled commercial international passenger services to/from India from March 27”.

For airlines, it is a much-needed relief because resuming international operations means they will be able to use aircraft on longer sectors, resulting in better utilisation of assets. They will also be able to improve their revenue earned per seat because fares are higher on international sectors than on domestic routes. (ANI)
