When BoJo Met NaMo!

There is an old proverb in Persian language: ‘Amad`an, nashist`am, ghuft`am, barkhas`tam’, they came, they sat, they talked and then dispersed. It actually means to say that nothing substantial was achieved by a visit or dialogue. The same holds true about the recent visit by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to India, after his two previous visits scheduled last year, were cancelled due to Covid pandemic.

BoJo in India

The diplomacy nowadays, thrives on optics. On this count the BoJo visit clicked all the boxes, but was also marred by angry reactions on the social media on photos showing him in the driver’s seat at a JCB bulldozer. Perhaps his advisers were unable to connect the continuing controversy over bulldozers being used by the establishment against the minorities across India, or his close connections with the owner of the JCB, Lord Anthony Bamford, an old Conservative party donor and supporter, overweighed the local sensibilities.

The Gujarat leg of his visit, a carbon copy of his Home Secretary Priti Patel’s 2015 visit to the state, was in essence aimed at garnering the support of the Gujarati electorate back home, keeping an eye on his uncertain political future.

In Gujarat he also met with Gautam Adani at his company’s head quarters. BoJo described the feeling of being in Ahmedabad similar to as those of Sachin Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan, two Indian icons used for boosting his own public image and trying to resonate or connect with the Indian audiences.

In New Delhi, he referred to Prime Minister Modi as a ‘khaas dost and continuously as Narendra during his speech at Hyderabad House. But no more ‘khaas’ treatment to the Indian demands of a relaxed Visa regime and post study work for the Indian students, an indication towards which was given in Ahmedabad, but not granted finally.

Bilateral Cooperation

His main focus remained the FTA between the two countries, as he expected to take back home something substantial in economic terms, particularly after his failed Brexit strategy. He urged the negotiators on both sides to hasten the pace of negotiations so as to have a final document ready for signing by Diwali in October. Certainly an over ambitious demand for an agreement, which has been under negotiations for more than last ten years.

Though the Indian side stated that it would demonstrate the same speed and urgency that it did in concluding recent FTAs with the UAE and Australia in recent months, yet nothing can’t be said for sure about an Indo-UK FTA, as there are many thorny issues on both sides.

British trade with India, the world’s second-most populous country with nearly 1.3 billion people, was worth 23 billion pounds ($29.93 billion) in 2019, much lower than the UK’s trade with some much smaller economies such as Ireland and India’s trade with smaller countries like Belgium which stands at 18 billion pounds.

Russian-Ukraine War

In addition, though not expressed overtly by the British side and neither by BoJo, the Russia-Ukraine war had an ominous shadow over the visit. Though his foreign secretary was very firmly told by New Delhi just 22 days before his visit that India is not going to change stand on its ties with Russia, BoJo thought he might be able to convince New Delhi to do so.

However, predicting the Indian response he had set the tone for this when even before meeting the PM Modi he had said that he understands India’s historic ties with Russia, but still chose to lecture New Delhi on its relationship with ‘autocratic’ states, though this time also New Delhi politely stood its ground.

The manner in which the visit was seen by both sides, was remarkable by the manner in which the two prime ministers delivered their speeches at Hyderabad House. While BoJo avoided mentioning Russia, Mr Modi reaffirmed the ties with Russia.

India-focussed Issues

Though the British side is referring to a host of agreements signed in different sectors, and BoJo’s statements on counter-terrorism task force being constituted and against the Indian economic fugitives currently at home in the UK, everyone is certain that they are just mere words, nothing substantial. His announcement of One billion pounds trade deals and creating 11,000 jobs is just peanuts for India.

Both sides also agreed to deepen bilateral defence and security cooperation. India welcomed Britain’s Indo-Pacific tilt and joining the Indo-Pacific Economic Initiative; on its part Britain announced the decision to ease the transfer of defence equipment and technology for India and also for developing an advanced jet fighter. But overall, nothing concrete was inked down by both the sides and the technology transfer could be viewed as just a gimmick to wean India away from Russia.

Overall, the two sides showed commitment to joint research, development and production of advanced weapons and related technologies. The two PMs also issued a statement on strengthening partnership in cyber-security domain, and plans to boost cooperation on mitigating climate change and promoting clean energy. But these agreements should be seen as just part of a normal bureaucratic visit.

The visit seems to be a hastily stitched plan, with no long-term goals and no narrative setting, and was unable to achieve anything bilaterally. In the end BoJo was unable to get anything substantial from India and his political troubles back home persists. The coming days will show how he’ll be able to deal with them and survive as even his closest Asian origin lieutenants like Rishi Sunak and Priti Pate, who were predicted to take over from him, are facing politically damaging controversies of their own.

DCGI Grants Ok To ZycovD Vaccine For Kids Above 12

By Shalini Bhardwaj

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on Tuesday granted Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) to Zydus Cadila vaccine (ZycovD) for COVID-19 as a two-dose vaccine for children above the age of 12 years, said Zydus Lifesciences Ltd., the pharmaceutical company.

With this approval, the vaccine will now be administered on day 0 and day 28. Earlier, the vaccine was approved in a three-dose regimen to be administered on day 0, day 28 and day 56.

Speaking on the development, Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director, Zydus Lifesciences said, “The approval of a two-dose regimen for ZyCoV-D is a welcome development. This will increase the compliance with the vaccine and reduce the overall time required for vaccination to improve immunity against the virus. It will also help in administering the vaccine to a larger population in a shorter time which is always desirable in the midst of a pandemic.”

The two-dose regimen for ZyCoV-D was tested in 3,100 healthy volunteers more than 12 years of age.

Earlier, the safety and efficacy analysis data from Phase III clinical trial of its Plasmid DNA COVID-19 vaccine ZyCoV-D (three-dose regimen) has been peer-reviewed and published in The Lancet, a reputed and well known medical journal.

The results of the Phase I part of Phase I/II clinical trial (three-dose regimens) have also been published in the EClinical Medicine Journal of The Lancet.

Earlier, the DCGI gave restricted emergency use authorisation to Covaxin for the 6-12 age group.

The Corbevax is currently being administered to children in the age group of 12-14.

COVID-19 vaccinations for minors in India were started from January 3 onwards for those in the 15-18 age group with Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

The drive later expanded on March 16 to include children aged above 12 for Corbevax.

Overall India is currently administering two COVID-19 vaccines for children above 12. (ANI)

Trump: Queen Should Strip Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Of All Titles

Former US president Donald Trump has taken a dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s relationship, saying that the Prince is “whipped” by Meghan.

In an interview with TV host Piers Morgan, Donald Trump took aim at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, accusing Prince Harry of being “so disrespectful to the country”.
According to a clip shared by Piers Morgan on Twitter, Trump went on to say, “I won’t use the full expression, but Harry is whipped like no person I think I’ve ever seen.” “I’m not a fan of Meghan, I’m not a fan, and I wasn’t right from the beginning. I think poor Harry is being led around by his nose,” he continued.

In the interview, Trump was asked whether he would remove Harry and Meghan’s royal titles if he were Queen Elizabeth II. To which he replied, “I would, the only thing I disagree with the queen on, probably one of the only things ever, is that I think she should have said, ‘If that’s your choice fine, but you no longer have titles and frankly don’t come around.’ He has been so disrespectful to the country and I think he’s an embarrassment.”

Predicting the couple’s future, Trump says, “I’ve been a very good predictor, as you know. I predicted almost everything. It’ll end and it’ll end bad.” He also believes that the Prince would soon get bored of being “bossed around” or Meghan Markle would start linking with some better guy.

The two-part interview of the “Piers Morgan Uncensored” is already grabbing headlines due to the former US President walking out of the interview after being confronted with his election lies. However, Trump stood his ground and instead accused Piers Morgan of “unlawfully and deceptively” editing the clip. (ANI)

Tibetans In France Protest On Panchen Lama’s 33rd B’day

Tibetan community in France protested in Paris to mark the 33rd birthday of Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.

Around 200 members of the Tibetan community in France participated in the demonstration on Monday.

Speaking at the event, President of the Tibetan Community Karma Thinlay described the abduction of the Dalai Lama selected 11th Panchen Lama, by the Chinese authorities.

He said that the time has come to intensify the campaign to pressurise China to release the Panchen Lama in order to allow him and his family to live a free life.

Anti-Chinese slogans were also raised at the event.

The participants also prayed for the long life of Panchen Lama and celebrated his birthday by performing traditional Tibetan dances.

After the death of the 10th Panchen Lama, Dalai Lama and his search party (in Tibet) started searching for the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama and finally on May 14, 1995, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, a 6-year-old boy in Tibet was recognized as the 11th Panchen Lama, reported Tibet Rights Collective.

However, things turned worst when the 6-year-old boy and his family were kidnapped on May 17. For nearly 27 years, Tibetans have not seen their 11th Panchen Lama pictures. The Chinese officials have only given words to the world that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family are doing well, reported Tibet Rights Collective.

Last Panchen Lama, the 10th Panchen Lama stayed back in the region after the revolt broke out between Tibet and Chinese officials. While he was in the region, he submitted a 70,000-word petition to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) which led to his arrest.

Dalai Lama, another head of the Gelugpa sect, took shelter in India and garnered international support, and made the people of the world aware of the atrocious acts that were happening in Chinese occupied Tibet. (ANI)

Nitin Gadkari

Gadkari Invites Tesla To Manufacture E-Vehicles In India

Highlighting the conducive environment for automobile manufacturing in India, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said that Elon Musk is welcome to manufacture e-vehicles in India, but in case the Tesla owner desires to build in China and sell here, it cannot be a “good proposition”.

Gadkari made the remarks while speaking at a private event in Delhi answering a question on Tesla’s concerns on “high duties” in India.
“It is a very easy alternative, if Elon Musk is ready to manufacture a Tesla in India, there is no problem. We have got all competencies, the vendors are available. We have got all types of technology and because of that, he can reduce the cost,” Gadkari said.

Inviting Tesla to start manufacturing in India, the Union Minister highlighted that India is a huge market, and infrastructure like ports are available to enable exports.

“He is welcome in India. We don’t have any problem, but, suppose, he wants to manufacture in China and sell in India, it cannot be a good proposition for India. Our request to him is, come to India and manufacture here,” Gadkari said.

Citing the tremendous growth in the e-vehicles sector in India over the last few years, Gadkari further said that “my suggestion to Elon Musk is, in India, he will get a good market and Indian market is very huge. It is a win-win situation for both.”

He added that India has all the quality vendors and automobile spare parts that are available in China and that “it can be more easy for him to make here in India and sell in India. He will get good profits from that, and good economics is there. I will request him to come to India and start manufacturing here.”

The Union Minister also talked about India’s dependence on crude oil and said that the government is working on alternative sources of energy.

“Presently because of import of crude oil, we are facing critical economic challenges at the same time pollution problems. We import Rs 8 lakh crores of petroleum products in India and exactly on the line we need to find some alternative for that, so different alternatives are there. The government is working on all options and I feel that in some time we will be in a position to give an alternative solution for the country,” Gadkari said.

Gadkari also talked about the ongoing research in India on the production of “green hydrogen” from biowaste and other methods, saying, “In due course of time we will be in a leading position in the world as far as green hydrogen is concerned.” (ANI)

Prashant Kishor Declines Offer To Join Cong

After several rounds of meetings with Congress top brass in the last few days, poll strategist Prashant Kishor has declined to join the Congress party.

Prashant Kishor has held several meetings in the last 15 days with Congress’s top leadership and gave a proposal to revamp the party ahead of the 2024 general election. Kishor had given a detailed presentation with a road map for the 2024 General elections.
Taking to Twitter today, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi constituted an Empowered Action Group 2024 and invited Kishor to join the party as part of the group with defined responsibility but he declined.

“Following a presentation and discussions with Prashant Kishor, Congress President has constituted a Empowered Action Group 2024 and invited him to join the party as part of the group with defined responsibility. He declined. We appreciate his efforts and suggestion given to party,” Surjewala tweeted.

This came after the Congress panel set up by president Sonia Gandhi to work out a revival plan, as suggested by poll strategist Prashant Kishor, submitted a report on its findings on Friday.

Sources told ANI that Kishor, in his presentation to Congress leadership, suggested that Congress should fight alone in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha, and it should form alliances in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra to which Rahul Gandhi has agreed.

Kishor is learnt to have said that Congress should focus on 370 Lok Sabha constituencies for the 2024 general elections.

After the recent poll debacle in five states, Congress was holding negotiations with Kishor. The results of five Assembly polls came as a shock to Congress which was hoping to do well to revive its prospects for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and to fend off the emerging challenge from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Trinamool Congress to replace it as the fulcrum of anti-BJP politics in the country.

Earlier, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has openly praised Prashant Kishor, saying that he is a “brand”. Senior Congress leader Veerapa Moily has said that those opposing Kishor’s entry to the party are “anti-reformers”. (ANI)

Indian Sailors Rescued From Yemen Houthis Thank Modi

Seven Indian sailors, who were recently rescued from Houthi rebels in Yemen expressed their gratitude to the Narendra Modi government for safely bringing them back to India.

The Indians were among 14 foreigners who were taken captive when the Houthi rebels seized the UAE-flagged merchant vessel Rwabee in the Red Sea on January 2.
The External Affairs Ministry said that the sailors were freed with Oman assistance from the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Sunday and reached India from the Omani capital Muscat where they were transferred “on a plane belonging to the Royal Air Force of Oman.”

Mohammed Munwar Sameer Shaikh, one of the rescued sailors told ANI: “We were stuck there for almost three and half months. The Indian government, our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), and the Indian embassy rescued us after tough negotiations. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts.”

” People from four other countries were also rescued along with us by the Indian government,” Shaikh added.

Another sailor named Mohmmad Jashim Khan, who hails from Lucknow echoed Shaikh’s sentiments and thanked the Indian government for coming to their rescue “The situation is grave in Yemen. Rebels wanted to capture our ship and its cargo, we were held captive too as we were the crew on the ship. They treated us well once they came to know that we are Indians,” he said.

” Indians who travel to foreign countries can always count should not fear anything — they can always count on their government,” he said.

Veera Venkata Suva Sai Girish, a third sailor who was among those rescued, said they will be able to return to their homes all due to the efforts of PM Modi.

Apart from seven Indians, three from the UK and one each from Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Ethiopia had been detained and kept in Yemen without trial.

On Monday, the Indian government thanked all the parties concerned for the release of the sailors, particularly the Omani government.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the Indian government had been “exerting all efforts for the release of the Indian crew members over the past months.”

“Government of India had been in touch with various parties to ensure the safety and well-being of our sailors during this time. The issue was also taken up by the Indian delegation at the UN Security Council,” the MEA said.

Meanwhile, in January this year, two Indians were killed in a drone attack by the Houthis on Abu Dhabi. (ANI)

Tesla CEO Elon Musk

Twitter Confirms Sale To Elon Musk For $ 44 Billion

Twitter on Monday (local time) confirmed the sale of the company to Tesla Chief Elon Musk for USD 44 billion.

Under the terms of the deal, shareholders will receive USD 54.20 in cash for each share of Twitter stock they own, matching Musk’s original offer and marking a 38 per cent premium over the stock price the day before Musk revealed his stake in the company, CNN reported.
It further reported that the deal caps off a whirlwind news cycle in which the Tesla and SpaceX CEO became one of Twitter’s largest shareholders, was offered and turned down a seat on its board and bid to buy the company — all in less than a month.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it,” he added.

The deal comes after Musk revealed last week he had lined up USD 46.5 billion in financing to acquire the company, an apparent turning point that forced Twitter’s board to seriously consider the deal. The board met Sunday to evaluate Musk’s offer.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal in a statement said “Twitter has a purpose and relevance that impacts the entire world. Deeply proud of our teams and inspired by the work that has never been more important.” (ANI)
