B’desh Declares Health Alert Amid Monkeypox Outbreak

Amid rising cases of monkeypox across the world, Bangladesh has declared a health alert to curb the latest outbreak of the disease.

However, no cases have been reported in the country so far, Xinhua News Agency on Sunday reported citing a health official.
“No monkeypox case has been reported in Bangladesh yet, but we’ve made the declaration in order to check any eventuality,” the official from the health ministry said.

According to the official, the initial measures will involve monkeypox screening of all incoming passengers from countries where cases have been detected.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 80 cases of monkeypox in 11 countries and said they are working to better understand the extent and cause of the outbreak.

In a statement issued on Friday, the WHO said the virus is endemic in some animal populations in a number of countries, leading to occasional outbreaks among local people and travelers.

“WHO and partners are working to better understand the extent and cause of an outbreak of monkeypox. The virus is endemic in some animal populations in a number of countries, leading to occasional outbreaks among local people and travelers. The recent outbreaks reported across 11 countries so far are atypical, as they are occurring in non-endemic countries,” the WHO said in a statement.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms very similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.

According to WHO, Monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications. Monkeypox is usually a self-limited disease with symptoms lasting from 2 to 4 weeks. (ANI)

Centre Bearing Entire Fuel Tax Cut Burden: Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday clarified that the entire cost of the reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel is borne by the Central government and the state’s revenue won’t be impacted by the move.

Taking to Twitter, Sitharaman shared “facts” about the Centre’s decision to bring an Excise Duty cut on petrol and diesel, saying that both criticism and appraisal can benefit from them.
The Finance Minister informed that the Basic Excise Duty (BED), Special Additional Excise duty (SAED), Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC), and Agriculture and Infrastructure Development Cess (AIDC) together constitute Excise Duty on petrol and diesel.

“Basic Excise Duty is sharable with states. SAED, RIC and AIDC are non-shareable,” she said.

Sitharaman clarified that the Excise Duty reduction of Rs 8 per litre on petrol and Rs 6 per litre on diesel (effective from today) has entirely been made in Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC).

She also informed that the reduction of Rs 5 per litre in petrol and Rs 10 per litre in diesel in November 2021 was also entirely made in RIC.

“Basic ED which is sharable with states has not been touched. Therefore, the entire burden of these two duty cuts (made in November 2021 and yesterday) is borne by the Centre,” the Finance Minister said.

The duty reduction made yesterday, as per Sitharaman, has an implication of Rs 1,00,000 crore a year for Centre. Meanwhile, the duty reduction made in November 2021 has an implication of Rs 1,20,000 crore a year for the Centre. “The total revenue implication to the Centre, on these two duty cuts is thus Rs 2,20,000 crore a year.”

Further, the Finance Minister shared that the Reserve Bank of India’s data reveals that the total developmental expenditure incurred by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Government during 2014-22 was Rs 90.9 lakh crore.

Slamming the United Progressive Alliance, she said that in contrast to the PM Modi-led government, only Rs 49.2 lakh crore was spent on developmental expenditure during 2004-14.

“The expenditure incurred by our government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi includes Rs 24.85 lakh crore spent so far on food, fuel and fertiliser subsidies and Rs 26.3 lakh crore on capital creation. Over the 10 years of United Progressive Alliance, only Rs 13.9 lakh crore was spent on subsidies,” Sitharaman added.

Notably, after taking a critical view of the central government’s request to the states to cut taxes on petrol and diesel, former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Sunday said the facts about the states’ share of tax reduction are contrary to what he had said previously as the entire burden of the duty cut would fall on the centre. Modi In Pre-Quad: Leaders Will Discuss Issues Of Mutual Interest

Ahead of his scheduled visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that during the Quad summit, leaders will once again have the opportunity to discuss various initiatives and issues of mutual interest.

“This evening, I will be leaving for Japan to take part in the second in-person Quad Summit. The leaders will once again have the opportunity to discuss various Quad initiatives and other issues of mutual interest,” PM said.
He said that he will also hold a bilateral meeting with US President Joseph Biden. He said that the two countries will discuss ways to consolidate the multi-faceted bilateral relations.

“We will also continue our dialogue on regional developments and contemporary global issues,” PM added.

In March 2022, Japan Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited India to take part in the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit. During the summit, PM Modi and his counterpart from Japan announced that Japan will be investing 5 trillion yen (USD 42 billion) in India over the next five years.

Speaking of this, PM said, “I look forward to continuing our conversation further, with an aim to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.” He also said that he is expecting to meet with Japanese business leaders to strengthen economic linkages between the two countries.

PM further said that during the summit, he will meet the newly-elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who will be joining the Quad Leaders’ Summit for the first time.

The two are expected to hold a bilateral meeting to discuss matters of mutual interest.

“I look forward to a bilateral meeting with him during which the multifaceted cooperation between India and Australia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and regional and global issues of mutual interest will be discussed,” Modi said.

“Japan is home to nearly 40,000 members of the Indian diaspora, who are an important anchor in our relations with Japan. I look forward to interacting with them,” he added. (ANI)

Raj Thackeray Urges Modi To Bring Uniform Civil Code, Population Control Law

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and law on population control in the country.

Addressing a rally in Pune, Thackeray said, “I request the Prime Minister to bring Uniform Civil Code at the earliest, also bring a law on population control and change the name of Aurangabad to Sambhajinaga. Do it at once and all the dispute will end.”

On postponing his Ayodhya visit, the MNS chief said, “Two days ago, I tweeted about postponing my Ayodhya visit. I intentionally gave the statement to allow everyone to give their reactions. Those who were against my Ayodhya visit were trying to trap me, but I decided not to fall into this controversy.”

Thackeray had postponed his planned Ayodhya visit which was scheduled for June 5.

He further slammed Amravati MP Navneet Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana for the ruckus outside Matoshree, the residence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

“After I asked my workers to play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers, the Rana couple (Ravi and Navneet Rana) said they will recite Hanuman Chalisa at Matoshree. Is Matoshree a mosque? Everyone knows what happened between Shiv Sainiks and the Rana couple later,” added the MNS chief.

Meanwhile, heavy deployment of the police was made at Ganesh Kala Krida Manch in Pune where Raj Thackeray addressed a rally today.

The MNS chief has been at the centre stage of the loudspeakers row in Maharashtra.

The controversy started after Thackeray on April 12 gave an ultimatum to the Maharashtra government to remove loudspeakers from mosques by May 3, failing which, he warned, MNS workers will play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers.

A case was filed against Raj Thackeray when he appealed to people to play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers in the areas where loudspeakers are used for ‘Azaan’. (ANI)

Shuttler Lakshya Gifts Almora’s Bal Mithai To PM

Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen gifted Almora’s ‘Bal Mithai’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.

The Indian team scripted history on May 15 by winning the first-ever Thomas Cup crown since its inception in 1949. PM Modi had a telephonic conversation with the players, immediately after they clinched the victory in the final, where he had requested Lakshya for the sweet dish.
On Sunday, PM Modi held an interaction with the Indian contingent of Thomas and Uber Cup, where Lakshya fulfilled his promise.

“First of all, I would like to thank Lakshya for bringing Almora’s Bal Mithai for me. I am so grateful that he remembered my little request and fulfilled it,” said PM Modi.

Replying to this, Lakshya said, “When I won a medal in the Youth Olympics that was the time when I met you for the first time and today is the second chance I got to meet you. Whenever we get an opportunity to meet you, it boosts our confidence and we feel very motivated. Even after our phone call, it’s a really great feeling for all of us. I am looking forward to winning more tournaments, meeting you and bringing Bal Mithai for you.”

PM Modi further advised Lakshya to maintain his childish nature and keep on striving hard to achieve big goals ahead.

Later in a media interaction, Lakshya said, “He pays attention to small, small things. He knew that Almora’s ‘bal mithai’ is very famous, so he had asked me to get it. I got it for him. And he also knew that my grandfather and father also used to play. These small things are very important. Such a big man is saying these things to you, so it feels very nice to talk to him,”

Lakshya defeated Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Anthony Ginting in the first match and gave India a strong start in the finals.

No Indian team has previously reached the final of the Thomas and Uber Cup in its 70-plus year history. Indian men reached the Thomas Cup semi-finals in 1952, 1955 and 1979 while the women’s team made it to the Uber Cup top-four in 2014 and 2016.

Centre Will Reduce The Rate Of VAT On Petrol-Diesel In States

Excise duty cut in petrol and diesel will reduce the effective rate of Value Added Tax (VAT) in states.

Due to the reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by the central government, VAT in Rajasthan will be reduced by Rs 2.48 per litre on petrol and Rs 1.16 per litre on diesel. With this, petrol will be cheaper by Rs 10.48 and diesel by Rs 7.16 per litre in the state.
Taking to Twitter, the state chief minister Ashok Gehlot wrote, “Due to the reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel by the central government, the state government will reduce VAT by Rs 2.48 per litre on petrol and Rs 1.16 per litre on diesel. With this, petrol will be cheaper by Rs 10.48 and diesel by Rs 7.16 per litre in the state.”

The central government imposes excise duty on petrol. Similarly, the state govt levies VAT ad valorem on fuel. VAT on petrol varies with each state. As centre has reduced the excise duty on diesel and petrol, the VAT automatically gets reduced.

Centre has many times appealed to states, especially non-BJP ruled states, to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel, but the states had not done so.

Meanwhile, the Kerala government also said that the excise duty cut by centre on petrol diesel will effectively reduce the rate of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 respectively.

Earlier on Saturday, in a significant step aimed at providing relief to people from high fuel prices, the Centre announced a reduction in excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per litre and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.

Making the announcement in tweets, Finance Minister Sitharman said that the move will have a revenue implication of around Rs 1 lakh crore per year. The minister, who made several other announcements aimed at curbing inflation, said subsidy will be provided on cylinders under the Ujjwala scheme.

She urged states to also reduce VAT on petroleum products to give relief to the common man.

The government had similarly reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel in November last year on the eve of Diwali. It had reduced excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 a litre and on diesel by Rs 10 a litre. (ANI)

Apple Plans Ramping Up Production In India

Battered by Beijing’s strict anti-COVID measures, Apple Inc has told some of its contract manufacturers that it wants to increase the production outside China, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

India and Vietnam, which are already sites of Apple production, are among the countries being seen as an alternative option to China, the report added.
This move by Apple, being the largest US company by market capitalization, will influence the thinking of other Western companies which have been considering to reduce their dependency on China for manufacturing or key materials in the wake of Beijing’s indirect support to Russia for its invasion in Ukraine and lockdowns in some cities to fight COVID-19.

According to analysts, over 90 per cent of Apple products including iPhones, iPads and MacBook laptops are manufactured in China by outside contractors.

Responding to Apple’s supply chain challenges in April, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said, “Our supply chain is truly global, and so the products are made everywhere. We continue to look at optimizing.”

The lockdowns imposed in Shanghai and other cities as part of China’s anti-Covid policy have disrupted supply-chain for many Western companies.

In April, Apple warned that the resurgence of COVID-19 will hinder the sales by as much as USD 8 billion in the current quarter. China’s strict anti-Covid rules have stopped Apple from sending its executives and engineers into the country over the past two years, which means that it becomes hard for them to check the production sites in person. The power outages last year also dented China’s reputation for reliability.

Except India, China was the one which have the pool of qualified workers that exceeds the entire population of many alternative countries in Asia.

Apple sees India as the closest thing to the next China, as both of them are similar in population and both offers low cost, Wall Street Journal reported citing people who are familiar with the matter. Apple is in conversation with some existing suppliers about expanding in India, including production for export, people familiar with the matter said.

India made 3.1 per cent of the world’s iPhones last year, and the proportion is forecast to increase to 6 per cent to 7 per cent this year, according to research firm Counterpoint.

According to some analyst and suppliers, there will be the difficulty for the China-based assemblers in setting up the shop as the relation between New Delhi and Beijing have deteriorated since the two countries’ militaries fought a deadly clash in 2020. This was the reason that China-based manufacturing contractors who are in business with Apple is seeking for Vietnam and other Southeast Asian nations, according to people familiar with the matter.

Vietnam, on other hand is already a smartphone manufacturing hub for Apple’s rival, Samsung Electronics Company. South Korea-based Samsung, which has limited its exposure to China manufacturing.

Luxshare Precision Industry Co., a China-based manufacturing contractor is already making the AirPods earbuds for Apple in Vietnam. Even the Luxshare’s clients are worried about the problems with the power supply and China’s zero-covid policy. Luxshare said these clients were asking manufacturing partners to look outside the China when they carry out key preliminary work for mass production, a stage known as new product introduction, or NPI.

Taiwan-based assemblers Foxconn Technology Group and Wistron Corp. is a step ahead and has already set up factories in India to produce the iPhones mainly for that country’s domestic market, where Apple sales are growing rapidly.

In April, Apple said that it has begun producing the latest generation of iPhones and iPhone 13 series in India.

Such steps require considerable investment by suppliers, analysts and suppliers said, which makes them uneasy at a time when the global economic outlook is clouded by high commodity prices, the war in Ukraine and stock-market gyrations.

Cash is important in uncertain times, a contractor executive said, but suppliers need to go where Apple goes if they want to keep the business. (ANI)

Kerala: Tax Cut On Petrol By ₹2.41, Diesel By ₹1.36

Following a reduction of fuel prices by the Centre, the Kerala government on Saturday announced a cut in tax on the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 respectively.

“Kerala government announces cut in tax on petrol and diesel by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 respectively,” state Finance Minister KN Balagopal said.

The minister, who made several other announcements aimed at curbing inflation said subsidy will be provided on cylinders under the Ujjwala scheme.

The government had similarly reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel in November last year on the eve of Diwali. It had reduced excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 a litre and on diesel by Rs 10 a litre.

The government data earlier this week showed that the wholesale inflation in India surged to 15.08 per cent in April from 14.55 per cent in the previous month due to a sharp jump in the prices of fuel, metal, food and non-food articles and chemical products. (ANI)
