Ahead Of UN Visit, Beijing Warns Uyghurs Not To Talk About ‘Re-Education’

Ahead of the UN team’s much-anticipated visit to Xinjiang, the Chinese government has issued a new directive that forbids Uyghurs from discussing the network of internment camps.

The directive also mandates the people of the northwestern province from accepting calls from international phone numbers, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported.
A police officer in the region told RFA that police received special government notices on how to prepare for the visit this month by Michelle Bachelet, the UN’s high commissioner for human rights.

The policeman, who is a Chinese Communist Party member, said that he was playing a leading role in disseminating the notices during political study sessions and enforcing their mandates.

“The political study sessions are being held on Wednesdays, and prefectural and autonomous regional notices are being studied as they arrive,” he said.

China on Wednesday welcomed the upcoming visit of the UN rights chief Michelle Bachelet to the Xinjiang province this month amid reports of human rights abuses in the northwest region.

“The preparatory team of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has arrived in China and is currently undergoing quarantine in accordance with relevant anti-COVID-19 protocols,” China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a daily press briefing.

“The preparatory team has begun work and the two sides are discussing the specific arrangements for the visit,” he said.

Several rights groups have said the planned visit to China by the UN high commissioner for human rights should meet minimum standards to be considered credible.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) and 59 other groups earlier urged High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet to take several steps to prevent the Chinese government from manipulating the visit.

Dozens of rights groups say the Chinese government has committed widespread and systematic policies of mass detention, torture, cultural persecution, and other offenses against Uyghurs and members of other Turkic groups in Xinjiang that amount to crimes against humanity. (ANI)

Kerala Rapidly Getting Talibanized: State BJP Chief

Days after a Muslim cleric opposed a minor girl’s presence at a felicitation ceremony, Kerala BJP President K Surendran slammed the CPI (M) led State Government and said that Kerala is rapidly becoming “Talibanized”.

In a viral video from Kerala, a Muslim cleric can be seen opposing a minor girl’s presence at a felicitation ceremony. Here, a class 10 student named Mashida was called on stage to receive the prize for topping her class, wherein the cleric objected to her presence. Rebuking the other officials present at the event, the cleric remarked that if a girl is being given the honour, her parents or guardians should be called on stage instead.

Speaking on this development, Surendran on Thursday said to reporters, “Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has not uttered a single word after a student was publicly insulted at a religious organization. The case was not taken up. The Child Rights Commission is also keeping silent. What would have happened in Kerala if it had been elsewhere? Kerala is rapidly becoming Talibanized.”

“Kerala is moving towards the ideology followed by Taliban with the help and knowledge of the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister and the government are helping such terrorist forces. The Chief Minister’s Department is carrying out terrorism-based activities in Kerala. The Chief Minister has double standards of working here. CM is protecting all the interests of a particular section. The other category is being abused. Christians are also feeling like a minority here.” (ANI)

Rancour against Pakistanis grows in Turkey

Once bosom pals, Turkish people are getting increasingly wary of Pakistanis living in their country for video-stalking young children and their parents and indulging in criminal activities.

A few months back, there was a widespread public outrage against Pakistanis for surreptitiously shooting young Turkish girls and their mothers in private moments and circulating them on social media with lascivious comments.
The incident came in the wake of increased reporting of criminal activities by Pakistani criminals and gangs. In fact, Istanbul has become the hub of Pakistani gangs indulging in human trafficking, smuggling and kidnapping for ransom. The fear of Pakistani gangs is in fact terrorising Pakistani businessmen; one of whom sent out an SOS on a Whatsapp Group complaining of extortion rackets.

He mentioned the name of Kashif Zaheer Qureshi, a notorious extortionist who threatened to abduct the businessman’s children if refused to pay ransom in advance. Qureshi lives in Turkey illegally and commands a network of criminal activities ranging from Turkey to South Africa.

Two kidnapping cases carried out by Pak gangsters had attracted public attention in Turkey recently. Gangsters had kidnapped four Nepalis and two Afghans for ransom. So far, six Pakistanis have been arrested on charges of abducting Nepalese. These gang members included one woman who acted as the lookout.

The Nepalese were abducted at gunpoint and tortured for three days. A ransom message was sent to their friends for Euros 10000. The police, however, launched a manhunt and nabbed the kidnapping gang. Another group of gangsters were arrested last year when they abducted another Pakistan and asked for a 50,000-Euro ransom for his release.

The growing visible hatred against Pakistanis was the main focus of talk during an iftar party hosted by Pakistan Ambassador Mohammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi on May 1 this year. The diplomat had invited journalists from the Anadolu Agency (AA) English department. Several other people from Turkish media outlets were also present.

Guests complained about how they were being targeted by the Turkish police. The police have visited most of their homes, questioned their family members and sought to verify all residency documents. Many complained that these visits had become quite frequent in recent times. One of the journalists said the intelligence officials had visited his home thrice.

These lamentations by Pakistani residents in Turkey show how local sentiments have turned against them in a short time. Not long ago, Turkey and Pakistan hoped to lead an Islamic resurgence under a new leadership, away from the traditional Saudi Arabia. Once, not long ago, both the countries dreamt of creating a parallel Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC).

The recent criminal activities indulged in by Pakistanis and Pak gangs have turned such bonhomie into a deep suspicion and anger. (ANI)

Nobody Protected Him: Wife of Murdered Rahul Bhatt

The wife of Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri pandit who was killed by the terrorists yesterday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam, on Friday said that she is suspecting that terrorists must have acquired information about her husband’s identity from his workplace before killing.

Notably, Bhat, who was a government employee at Chadoora Tehsil Office, was shot at on Thursday following which he was declared dead at Srinagar’s SMHS hospital.

Protests erupted soon after Kashmiri Pandit Rahul Bhat was killed in a targeted killing by terrorists in Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir.

“He used to say everyone behaves nicely with him and nobody can harm him. Yet nobody protected him, they (terrorists) must’ve asked someone about him and his identity, otherwise, how would they’ve known,” the wife said expressing her grief to the media.

The father of the deceased demanded an inquiry into the matter as he suspected the targeted killing of his son Rahul.

“First, they asked who Rahul Bhat is and then they shot him. We want inquiry. There was a police station 100 ft away. There must’ve been security at the office but nobody was there. They should check CCTV footage,” he said.

In a protest in Budgam, people demanded that the LG should speak to protesters.

Earlier today, the last rites of Rahul Bhat were performed at Bantalab here on Friday.

ADGP Jammu Mukesh Singh, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, and Deputy Commissioner Avny Lavasa were present at the cremation ground for the last rites.
