Home Secretary Reviews Amarnath Yatra Preparations

Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Friday held a high-level meeting to review the security preparedness for Amarnath Yatra as the annual pilgrimage is all set to commence on June 30 after a gap of two years.

Bhalla convened the meeting at the Home Ministry with officials concerned with the Ministry of Home Affairs and Jammu and Kashmir administration, senior state police officers and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General Kuldeep Singh, Border Security Force (BSF) chief Pankaj Singh as well as Army officers.

Amarnathji Shrine Board members also participated in the meeting through video conferencing.

Bhalla, sources said, was apprised of security updates and department of Central Armed Police Forces on specific locations during the pilgrimage as well as the situation in the region.

The meeting was organised almost a month after his day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir in which he took stock of the preparedness of the Amarnath Yatra. Bhalla visited Jammu and Kashmir on April 15.

Sources in the government said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also expected to hold a security review meeting very soon regarding the pilgrimage after the second round of review-meet completed by Bhalla on Friday.

Resuming the Amarnath pilgrimage is a challenging task as Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed several incidences of targeted killings in the last few months by terrorists following which the Ministry of Home Affairs asked security agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir to enhance counter-terror operations.

However, online registration for Amarnath Yatra 2022 started on April 11 and the Home Ministry has already sanctioned nearly 50 companies of CAPF for the purpose to provide security during the pilgrimage as Jammu and Kashmir is expecting nearly three lakh pilgrims visiting the Amarnath cave shrine this year.

While online registration has already begun, the pilgrimage is scheduled to be held for 43 days between June 30 and August 11.

Amarnath shrine pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva, located in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, is held from the twin routes of Pahalgam and Baltal.

The Jammu and Kashmir government had cancelled the annual Amarnath pilgrimage due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation in 2020 and 2021. For the first time, the Amarnath Yatra was cancelled in 2019 a few days ahead of the revocation of Article 370, and 35A was withdrawn from Jammu and Kashmir and all travellers were asked to return as soon as possible. Sonia At Chintan Shivir: BJP Keeps People In ‘Frenzy’

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre stating that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wants to keep people in a “perpetual state of frenzy” by provoking and instigating”.

Gandhi further went ahead and targeted PM Modi’s slogan Maximum governance, minimum government’, saying BJP is viciously targeting and brutalising the minorities of the country.
The remarks of Gandhi came while addressing a three-day ‘Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir’ in Rajasthan’s Udaipur.

Urging members of the party to combat BJP’s divisiveness, Sonia Gandhi said, “Most Indians want to live in an atmosphere of peace, amity and harmony. BJP, its cohorts and surrogates want to keep people in a perpetual state of frenzy. They constantly provoke, instigate, and inflame.”

“We’ve to combat this virus of divisiveness that’s being maliciously spread,” she said while addressing the Chintan Shivir to discuss ‘communal polarization’, farmers’ issues and strengthening the party for the upcoming elections.

The Congress interim president further took a jibe at the Centre’s slogan ‘Maximum governance, minimum government’ and said that it means “viciously targeting and brutalising the minorities” of the country.

“By now it has become abundantly and painfully clear what PM Modi and his colleagues really mean by their slogan ‘Maximum governance, minimum government’. It means keeping the country in a permanent state of polarisation, compelling people to live in a constant state of fear and insecurity, viciously targeting victimizing and often brutalizing minorities who’re an integral part of our society and equal citizen of our republic,” she said.

Talking about the Shivir, Gandhi said that it is also about “aatmachintan” (introspection) on the issues pertaining to the party.

“It is also an occasion to deliberate on the many challenges ahead of us. It is both ‘Chintan’ about national issues and meaningful ‘aatmachintan’ about our party organisation,” she said.

The Congress interim president also hit out at BJP and RSS stating that the country is facing numerous “challenges due to their policies” and the Shivir gives the grand-old party an opportunity to discuss those challenges.

“‘Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir’ gives us an opportunity to discuss amongst us the numerous challenges that the country is facing as a result of the policies of the BJP, RSS and its affiliates,” Gandhi added.

Meanwhile, the Chintan Shivir is being held in the backdrop of the party’s drubbing in the elections to five state assemblies earlier this year. The party has witnessed several electoral losses in the elections held in the past eight years. Congress has also seen the exit of some of its prominent faces. (ANI)

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing financial assistance to Sri Lanka in an economic crisis situation.
“The relations with India will be much better, I want to thank India and the Prime Minister for helping Sri Lanka,” Wickremesinghe during a temple visit after the oath in Colombo on Thursday.

The new Prime Minister on Friday met Indian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay after assuming the office and discusses democratic relations as well as cooperation between the two countries.

“High Commissioner called on Hon’ble PM @RW_UNP. Conveyed greetings and good wishes. Discussed continued cooperation for economic recovery and stability in #SriLanka through democratic processes towards the well being of all the people of Sri Lanka,” Indian embassy in Sri Lanka tweeted.

Wickremesinghe, the leader of the United National Party (UNP) of Sri Lanka, took over as the country’s Prime Minister for a record sixth term on Thursday to restore stability in the island nation in the midst of a political impasse and unprecedented economic crisis.

Speaking to ANI, Wickremesinghe said that he has taken a challenge for uplifting the country’s economy.

“I have taken a challenge for uplifting economic and I must fulfill,” he said.

Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence with food and fuel shortages, soaring prices and power cuts affecting a large number of the people, resulting in massive protests over the government’s handling of the situation.

India is becoming a stronger and more mutually beneficial partner to Sri Lanka. Apart from assistance during the pandemic and fertilizer chaos, in which India delivered nano fertilizer to save Sri Lankan farmers, now New Delgi has pledged nearly USD 3 billion in cash-strapped Colombo through currency swaps, credit lines for essential goods and repayment of loans since January 2022 to help Sri Lanka amid one of the worst economic crises in history. Jamaat-e-Islami Misuses Zakat Funds To Stir Violence: NIA

Outlawed terror group Jamaat-e-Islami (JeL) misused funds collected for Zakat, Mowda and Bait-ul-Mal to encourage violent and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, says National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheet.

The charge sheet filed against four JeL terrorists also mentions that one of the accused Javaid Ahmad Lone had been soliciting funds and organising meetings in the name of the terrorist organisation in Jammu and Kashmir.

In these meetings, the charge sheet pointed out that Javaid had been giving “hateful anti-India speeches and exhorting people to donate according to their status”.

Javaid and another charge-sheeted terrorist Aadil Ahmad Lone had been accused of acquiring firearms and ammunition, with “ulterior motives” from the co-accused persons.

The NIA filed the charge sheet in a special NIA court in Delhi on Thursday against Javaid alias Shalabughi, Aadil, Manzoor Ahmad Dar and Rameez Ahmad Kondu– all residents of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district– under sections of the Arms Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and some sections of Indian Penal Code.

The case was registered against members and cadres of the JeL Jammu and Kashmir for their involvement in separatist and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir even after its declaration as an unlawful association on February 28, 2019.

“They had been collecting funds domestically as well as from abroad through donations, particularly in the form of Zakat, Mowda and Bait-ul-Mal, purportedly to further charity and other welfare activities but had instead used it to encourage violent and secessionist activities,” mentions the charge sheet.

The NIA registered a case suo-moto on February 5 last year. (ANI)

Addressing a gathering during the Eid-Milan programme in Pune’s Kondhawa on Thursday evening, the Nationalist Congres Party (NCP) Cheif Sharad Pawar praised the commoners in Pakistan and their hospitality.

Recalling his visit to Karachi for a cricket match, he said, “I remember that we had taken our cricket team to Karachi and after finishing the match, the players told me that they want to see some parts of Pakistan, where we headed to a restaurant…when we went to pay the bill they refused and said that we were their guests so they can not take the money.”
“We know Sachin Tendulkar, we like his game we know u all,” he said quoting the Pakistan restaurant. “My personal experience is that the common man of Pakistan is not our opponent, those who want to do politics and keep the control of power with Army, they hold the stand of conflict and hate… but the majority of the people there think for how can the situation be made more peaceful…”

Telangana Govt Schools

Where The Chalk Meets The Cheese

Children across India, as elsewhere, missed going to school during the Covid-19 pandemic. They also missed the hot food being cooked next door at the school. Its aroma can be distracting for a class in session. But it is also a sure attraction to study if that is probably going to be the only full meal for a poor child.

Millions of children across India, adding up to nearly half the population, even those who can afford two meals and more, eat at school under a scheme that completes 62 years this year. About 118 million children are fed on at least 200 school days in a year through the Mid-Day Meal Scheme (MDM), making it the largest scheme of its kind in the world. With an allocation of ₹11,500 crore for FY 2021-22, it caters to children of Class I-VIII across 11.2 lakh government and government-aided schools.

Statistics for this centrally-funded scheme operated by states (since education is under their charge) with help of non-government organizations (NGOs) are fuzzy and often come as percentages that can be challenged.

It matters little. The fact is that the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, MDM for short, has brought down the drop-out rate among students, both rural and urban, and contributed to the rising literacy at the primary and secondary levels. Viewed from macro level or micro, the scale is huge. Cooking and feeding requires human effort, as much as teaching. Perhaps, even more if you consider quantities of food to be cleaned and cooked, and soiled vessels to be cleaned each day.

Just compare with the family kitchen and contrast the absence of gadgetry. Think of cooking in a corner of a school that is but a tin shed, with coal or wood for fuel.

Begun in Tamil Nadu in 1960 by Chief Minister K Kamaraj and expanded in 1982 by M G Ramachandran (MGR), the MDM now covers the whole country. For Tamil Nadu, the circle is complete. Chief Minister M K Stalin was in Delhi recently to study how Delhi administers it. On May 7, completing one year in office, he announced a ‘breakfast scheme” for government school children up to class five, to curb the rise of “unhealthy, under-nourished children” in the state.  Come to think of it, it was at once admission by the pioneer of the past failure and promise to better in the future.

MDM’s really is a chicken-and-egg story. It may have drawn from elsewhere and has spawned clones, based on the universal logic of combining bread with blackboard.

In the US, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) program has been around since 1946. Supply of curry meals by Manoj Raichura, an enterprising British Indian, has helped to arrest the truancy rates at schools in the city of Southampton. With numerous faults and flaws, MDM remains one of the success stories of India’s social sector.

There, indeed, are stories of stale food and of unsuspecting children falling sick. There is corruption — of food disappearing, items like milk and eggs, meant to boost nutrition content, remaining on the paper and ending up in the open market and of numbers of beneficiaries being fudged.

Insufficient food can turn a child into a modern-day Oliver Twist. It cannot be defended. In reality, however, it is difficult to ensure the quality and quantity of a meal, consumed by children, in schools small and big, day after day. Also, in each state, each region, children have differing food habits.

Then, there are social and religious taboos. Karnataka Government’s efforts to extend serving of eggs to children are being protested by the powerful Jains and Lingayats. The role of thousands of NGOs engaged in running the scheme is crucial. While the government often puts out a positive picture and statistics to support it, or when the states are finding fault with the federal government and vice versa, it is the NGOs who generally tell the real story.

Then, there are problems peculiar to India. Upper caste parents prevent their children from eating if the food is cooked by someone from low caste. Save these exceptions that make news and are derided, children eat from these casteless kitchens. It is education through the stomach.

It boils down to food and its management. The taste, the use of spices, the food habits like wheat in the north and rice in the south – so many things differ. Just like in a family. There are no easy solutions. Cooking and feeding is only a part of the task. After all, one is not running an eatery for profit.

Having to cook food makes the task really daunting. Former minister in the Manmohan Singh Government Renuka Chaudhary thought she was being ‘pragmatic’ in suggesting pre-cooked food such as biscuits. But this created a powerful lobby of biscuit and confectionary makers, some of them powerful multinationals. When the NGOs protested, the Supreme Court ruled that only cooked food would be served and that the cooking would be done daily. No junk food. No chips, chocolates and toffees.

Like other social sector schemes, the MDM too has its politics. The states, very possessive of their turf, happily accept central funds, but they will not take up its administration. Past resolves to transfer the MDM scheme to the states have not materialized.

Political preferences get injected. Each state has favourite areas for splurging. Like erecting statues. But when it comes to social sector, they throw up their hands and want the federal government alone to finance it. The MDM is just one such scheme. As the scheme evolves, standards are sought to be improved and an element of sharing is gradually coming in. But the scheme is too huge to run smoothly.

MDM is one of the flagship schemes that are central to the achievement of medium term goals in India’s social sector. “The chances of fulfilling these goals appear bleak if the trends in allocations are any indicator,” R. Ramakumar of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, has warned.

Feeding future generations better while educating it cannot be over-stressed.

Gyanvapi Masjid Row: Locals Express Delight Over Court’s Order

The locals of Varanasi on Friday expressed their delight over the decision of the Sessions Court to resume the video survey of the Gyanvapi mosque, and said that this would reveal the truth inside the campus.

The Varanasi sessions court on Thursday ordered the resumption of the video survey of the Gyanvapi mosque and appointed Vishal Singh and Ajay Singh as assistant commissioners along with retaining the earlier appointed commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra.
The survey is likely to kickstart tomorrow.

Speaking to ANI, a local, Amit Kumar termed the conduct of the survey necessary to reveal to the nation the “truth about the history”.

“The survey is being done according to the legal process after the court’s order. The court has sought a report so that truth can come out and harmony can be maintained in both the communities and the nation can know the truth about the history,” he said.

“We are happy with the order as we have been saying it for a long time,” the resident added.

Another local, Santosh Kumar said, “The survey is very necessary. Only then the truth will come out. There should not be any opposition to the survey.”

Earlier on Thursday, speaking to the media after the hearing, Advocate Madan Mohan Yadav, representing the Hindu petitioners in court, said, “Two more lawyers have been appointed as commissioners to accompany the Court commissioner Ajay Kumar Mishra for the survey. The Commission is to submit a report by May 17 before the court.”

Two more lawyers were appointed after Mishra was accused of being biased by the Anjuman Intezamia Mosque Committee. (ANI)
