International Left-Handers Day: Interesting Facts About Lefties

August 13 marks a special day for all left-handers as it is a day observed to raise awareness of the struggles left-handed people face when attempting to live in a right-handed world. It is the International Left-Handers Day!

To name a few celebrities, Amitabh Bachchan, Bill Gates, Rajnikanth, Sachin Tendulkar, and Ratan Tata are all left-handers. Interestingly, celebrated Tennis player Rafael Nadal is actually right-handed but learned to play with the left hand for an advantage in the game!

Let’s see how the day is relevant, its importance, and its history.

Interesting facts:

  • Almost 10-12 per cent of the population consists of left-handers.
  • A study published in the academic book “Cerebral Dominance: The Biological Foundations” revealed that left-handed people had an 11-fold higher risk of allergies than right-handed people.
  • According to a 2007 study – “Effect of Handedness on Intelligence Level of Students,” lefties are more likely to have higher IQs than righties.
  • 23% more men are left-handed than women, according to the 2008 study “Sex differences in left-handedness: a meta-analysis of 144 studies.”
  • The Illinois Research Consortium’s 2008 data revealed that left- and right-handed people approach to task and memory performance in different ways, concluding that left-handers are more likely to be better at multitasking
  • Tennis players, swimmers, and boxers are all sports in which lefties excel particularly well (almost 40% of the top tennis players at the moment are lefties). In essence, lefties are best at individual sports, or sports that are not team-based. This is due to the fact that right-handed players are more accustomed to playing against other right-handed players than left-handed players.

Also, did you know, that of the most recent US Presidents, five out of nine were left-handed? Although the list doesn’t include the current US President Joe Biden it does have the likes of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Ford.

Speaking about Royalty, the Future monarch of England Princes Charles is also left-handed. His son, The Duke of Cambridge William is also left-handed. King George VI, who was also left-handed, was made to learn how to use his right hand by his father.

History and significance of the day Dean R. Campbell established International Lefthanders Day in 1976 to raise awareness of the challenges lefties face on a daily basis. He founded the ‘Left-Handers International Inc.’ and ever since the day is celebrated every year on August 13. (ANI)

Kashmir To Get Its 1st Multiplex Theatre In 30 Years

Kashmir is all set to get its first multiplex cinema after three decades in Srinagar, which comes as a major move to bring entertainment to the youth in the Valley along with employment opportunities.

The setting up of a multiplex in Kashmir, which has seen terrorism for a long time from the other side of the border, comes three years after the abrogation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, the theatres in the Valley had shut in 1990 due to the rise in militancy.

The multiplex, which is likely to be open to the public from September, has been designed by INOX and will have three auditoriums, each being lashed with the latest sound systems and comfortable seating facilities.

Speaking to ANI, Project manager, Vishaq said, “We are starting the first multiplex in Kashmir designed by INOX. There are three auditoriums in which the latest sound systems are installed. A silver screen is being used. Recliner seats, as well as normal chairs, are also made available.”

Chairman of the project, Vijay Dhar said that the youngsters should get the same facilities in the cinema that they get elsewhere outside Kashmir.

“We saw there had been no such thing here for 30 years, we thought why not? So we’ve just started. The youngsters should get the same facilities in the cinema which they get in Jammu or in other towns of the country,” he said.

The capacity of the multiplex will be around 520 people. The multiplex has food courts and other entertaining facilities which will be an attraction point for children.

The work is underway in full swing to complete work as soon as possible. (ANI)

Sonia Gandhi Tests Covid-19 Positive Once Again

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday tested positive for Coronavirus infection for the second time, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh informed.

“Congress President Sonia Gandhi has tested positive for Covid-19 today. She will remain in isolation as per the government protocol,” he tweeted.

Notably, she was tested positive for the viral infection on June 2, a day later of the summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate to her in the National Herald case, where she was asked to appear before the probe agency on June 8.

The National Herald case pertains to the alleged financial irregularities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and was registered about nine months ago after a trial court took cognisance of an Income Tax department probe carried out on the basis of a private criminal complaint filed by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013, who had alleged that the Gandhis cheated and misappropriated funds, with YIL paying only Rs 50 lakh to obtain the right to recover Rs 90.25 crore that AJL owed to Congress.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gandhi’s daughter and party’s General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tested positive for Covid-19, which she informed via a tweet that read, “Tested positive for Covid (again!) today. Will be isolating at home and following all protocols.”

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi was also reported ill as a result of which his visit to Rajasthan’s Alwar to attend the party’s ‘Netratv Sankalp Shivir’ was cancelled. (ANI)

Flag Code: The Dos And Don’ts Of Hoisting National Tricolour

Ahead of the 75th year of India’s Independence, Prime Minister Modi has launched the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, which kick started today and will continue till Monday, i.e., August 15.

Under the campaign, the Centre has urged people to hoist or display the tricolour in their homes to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

It is important to understand the basic Dos and Don’ts of hoisting the National Flag.

According to the Flag Code of India, the Tiranga can be hoisted on all occasions at all places without disrespecting its dignity and honour.

The code says that the Flag can be of any size but its ratio of length to height must be 3:2 in the rectangular shape.

Overruling clause XI of paragraph 2.2 of Part II of the Flag Code of India to unfurl the national flag after sunset only, Tiranga can now be displayed on the house of any person in the country at whatever time in the 24 hours of the day.

“where the Flag is displayed in open or displayed on the house of the member of the public, it may be flown day and night,” states the new rule.

However, it is necessary for the person hoisting the national flag to make sure that the flag is not hoisted in an inverted manner–that is the saffron part of the flag should fly high.

The flag you are hoisting must not display a damaged tricolour and neither it should touch the ground or water. In other words, the national flag should not be damaged in whatsoever way.

Moreover, the person hoisting the flag must ensure that the flag is not flown from the extreme top part of the flagpole with any other flag.

In case, the National Flag is damaged, it should be disposed off in a way that its dignity is not hurt. The Flag Code of India suggests that it should be completely destroyed in private by burning it; and if it is paper-made, make sure that its is not abandoned on the ground.

In short, the National Flag of India should be discarded in complete privacy, keeping in mind the dignity of Tiranga.

A citizen, a private organization or an educational institution may hoist or display the National Flag on all days and occasions. There is no restriction on the timing of flag display.

The government has amended the Flag Code of India to allow the tricolour to be displayed in the open and on individual houses or buildings day and night.

Earlier, Indians were allowed to hoist their National Flag only on some specific occasions but it changed after a decade-long legal battle of industrialist Naveen Jindal which culminated in the January 23, 2004 landmark judgment of the Supreme Court of India, that declared that the Right To fly the National Flag freely with Respect and Dignity a ‘fundamental right of an Indian citizen’ within the meaning of Article 19(1) (a) of the Constitution of India.

Lauding the Centre and PM Modi for the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign, Naveen Jindal has urged every Indian to make ‘Har Din Tiranga’ their motto.

The Flag Code of India was earlier amended in December last year allowing the use of polyester, apart from cotton, wool, silk and khadi for making hand-spun, hand-woven and machine-made flags. (ANI)

Salman Rushdie Stabbed On Stage In New York, Guv Says He Is Stable

Renowned author Salman Rushdie, who faced death threats over his book ‘The Satanic Verses’, was “stabbed” on stage in Western New York state.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the author is alive and has been transported to a local hospital.
“He is alive and has been transported, airlifted, to safety… The event moderator was attacked as well; he’s getting the care he needs at a local hospital,” she said.

The New York State Police said in a statement that a male suspect ran up onto the stage prior to a speaking event at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua and attacked Rushdie.

It said the author suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. A suspect has been taken into custody.

The interviewer with Rushdie was also attacked during the incident and he suffered a minor head injury, the police said.

“State Police are investigating an attack on author Salman Rushdie prior to a speaking event at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY,” the statement said.

“On August 12, 2022, at about 11 am, a male suspect ran up onto the stage and attacked Rushdie and an interviewer. Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is not yet known. The interviewer suffered a minor head injury. A State Trooper assigned to the event immediately took the suspect into custody. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene,” it added.

CNN citing a Chautauqua spokesperson said medical staff and police were called to the amphitheatre.

The seventy-five-year-old author hogged the limelight with his novel ‘Midnight’s Children’ in 1981. The India-born author won Booker Prize for the novel which was also adapted for the stage.

But his 1988 book ‘The Satanic Verses’ led to a fatwa, a religious decree, by the then Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The threat forced him into hiding for several years.

Rushdie’s books have been translated into several languages.

PEN International, a worldwide association of writers, condemned the attack on Rushdie.

“We are deeply concerned by the news that former PEN America President, @SalmanRushdie, was attacked today just before giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York. We condemn the attack and wish him a fast recovery,” PEN International tweeted.

American author Stephen King said, “I hope Salman Rushdie is okay.”

Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, said they can think of no comparable incident of a public violent attack on a literary writer on American soil.

“PEN America is reeling from shock and horror at word of a brutal, premeditated attack on our former President and stalwart ally, Salman Rushdie, who was reportedly stabbed multiple times while on stage speaking at the Chautauqua Institute in upstate New York. We can think of no comparable incident of a public violent attack on a literary writer on American soil,” Nossel said. (ANI)

A New York Times reporter tweeted that a doctor in the audience said that Rushdie had multiple stab wounds, including one to the neck, and a pool of blood under him.

One of the US media reports said there were no security searches or metal detectors at the event. A witness told CNN the attacker “walked quickly” down an aisle and jumped on stage, approaching the author and “making a stabbing motion with his hand repeatedly.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also said the author is alive and has been transported to a local hospital. “He is alive and has been transported, airlifted, to safety… The event moderator was attacked as well; he’s getting the care he needs at a local hospital,” she said.

US New Chip Law Will Undermine Global Supply Chain: China

China has strongly opposed the new Chips and Science Act adopted by the United States to support the local producers of semiconductors that it says will disrupt global supply chains and hamper international trade.

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden signed into law the USD 52.7 billion Act to support US semiconductor producers and strengthen their positions in competition with China.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the US intends to restrict the normal investment and trade and economic activities of relevant Chinese enterprises, as well as normal scientific and technical cooperation between China and the US.

“The United States stated that the act aims to increase the competitiveness of US technologies and the semiconductor production, however, this act provides huge subsidies to US enterprises producing chips and introduces a differentiated policy of industry support, some provisions of which, among other things, restrict the normal investment and trade and economic activities of relevant Chinese enterprises, as well as normal scientific and technical cooperation between China and the US,” Wenbin said on Wednesday.

The Chinese foreign ministry expects all these to “disrupt global supply chains and hinder international trade,” Wang said, adding that “China is strongly opposed to this.”

The United States is free to choose its own development methods, but those should not harm China’s development and must respect World Trade Organization rules and principles of transparency and non-discrimination, as well as safeguard global production and supply chains, Wang said. (ANI)
