Modi’s Security Breached As Man Tries To Run Towards Convoy: K’taka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security was breached on Saturday during his roadshow in Karnataka when a man tried to run towards his convoy, informed Karnataka police.

The man, hailing from Koppal, was detained, police informed further.
No further details were available at the time of filing this report.

In August last year, the Supreme Court, with regard to an earlier security breach during PM Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5, 2022, said the five-member committee it appointed to look into the matter had concluded that the Ferozepur SSP failed to discharge his duty though sufficient forces were available.

A bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli said, while reading out the committee’s report, that the committee headed by a former top court judge, Justice Indu Malhotra, said there should be an oversight committee for periodic revision of the ‘Blue Book’.

“The Ferozepur SSP failed to discharge his duty to maintain law and order. He failed to do this even though sufficient force was available and even though he was informed two hours in advance that Prime Minister will enter that route,” it said.

The Prime Minister was stuck atop a flyover for 15-20 minutes while on his way to Ferozpur, Punjab in January 2022 due to the road being blocked by some protesters. T

he Ministry of Home Affairs termed it as a “major lapse” in PM Modi’s security. (ANI)

I Don’t Consider Myself Citizen Of India: Amritpal Singh

Anonymous Caller Threatened To Raise Khalistani flag At Pragati Maidan

A air passenger received a pre-recorded call from an alleged Khalistan supporter, threatening to take down the national flag at Pragati Maidan in the national capital and replacing it with the Khalistani flag, Delhi Police informed on Saturday.

In his complaint, the passenger said the anonymous caller talked about fugitive Khalistan leader and Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh.
“A flight passenger lodged a complaint claiming that he received a call from an anonymous Khalistan supporter, who talked about Amritpal Singh. The caller threatened to take down the national flag at Pragati Maidan and replace it with a Khalistani flag. The caller also made offensive references about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and (Union) Home Minister Amit Shah,” an officer said.

Police said a case was registered at IGI Airport police station on March 23, Thursday, under sections 153, 153A and 505 of the Indian Penal Code.

The sleuths informed that Pragati Maidan is scheduled to play host to a big-ticket G20 meeting in September, the preparations for which are currently underway in full swing.

The Special Cell of Delhi Police are looking into the matter, the officer informed.

Meanwhile, Punjab Police on Saturday appealed to people not to believe in rumours and fake news of the arrest of radical preacher and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, which is being circulated on social media.

Speaking at a press briefing on Saturday, Bathinda SSP Gulneet Khurana said, “We urge people not to believe the fake reports of the arrest of Amritpal Singh that are being widely circulated on social media.”

He blamed the fake reports on “rumour mongers” based in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada.

“A few people sitting in the UK, US, and Canada are spreading false news on social media that Amritpal is being tortured (in custody),” the SSP added.

He added, “BSF companies along with police personnel and 140 security personnel from Bahadurgarh are currently deployed in Bathinda to ensure peace.”

An alert was sounded in Uttarakhand over the possibility of the absconding pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh entering the state, informed Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) V Murugesan on Saturday morning.

Murugesan added that he had received inputs from the Punjab Police that the pro-Khalistan leader, who fled Punjab in the wake of the crackdown on Waris Punjab De, may enter Uttarakhand from Haryana.

He told ANI that checks and searches are underway and a security alert has gone out in places through which he can enter the state.

The officer added that the district police have also been alerted and vigilance stepped up at the borders.

On Friday, an alert was issued in the Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand, amid reports of Amritpal trying to enter the state.

A team of Delhi Police and Punjab Police on Friday launched a search operation for Amritpal in Delhi and its border in view of the possibility of him entering the national capital.

However, Delhi Police later said Waris Punjab De chief may have left the national capital.

On March 18, Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal and his aides. The crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters clashed with uniformed personnel at the Ajnala police station on February 23, on the outskirts of Amritsar, demanding the release of one of his close aides, Lovepreet Toofan. Nitu, Saweety Strike Historic Gold At IBA Women's World Boxing C'ships

Nitu, Saweety Strike Historic Gold At IBA Women’s World Boxing C’ships

Scripting history, exuberant Indian pugilists Nitu Ghanghas and Saweety Boora were crowned as World Champions for the first time after registering contrasting victories in the finals of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex here on Saturday.

While the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nitu (48kg) defeated Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg of Mongolia with a 5-0 scoreline to clinch her first World Championships medal, three-time Asian medallist Saweety (81kg) had to grind hard to secure a 4-3 win on points after the bout was reviewed against Wang Lina of China to clinch her second Worlds medal.
Maintaining her red-hot form, Nitu (48kg) utilized her attacking supremacy from close range and smart movement to make light work of the two-time Asian bronze medallist Lutsaikhan. The 22-year-old pugilist from Bhiwani started off the bout energetically by landing a quick flurry of punches on the Mongolian and showcased a brilliant combination of relentless attack and resolute defence to seal the win by unanimous decision.

“I am very happy after winning the gold medal. I fell short in my quest for the gold last year so we worked on the mistakes and won it this time round in front of the home support. Having discussed with my coaches yesterday I had decided to be aggressive since the first round today to get the scores in my favour. I have been working hard for many years and this medal means a lot to me,” said Nitu after her bout.

Competing in her second World Championships final, Saweety faced a tough challenge against the 2018 World Champion Wang Lina. However, the Indian made use of her high technical ability and strength throughout the bout to impressively overpower her opponent in the closely contested bout.

“I am thrilled after fulfilling my dream of becoming the World Champion. The bout went well and I was able execute our planning perfectly. My performances in the tournament got better as the bouts progressed with my body also responding well. I want to thank the fans for their constant love and support,” said Saweety after the bout.

Both pugilists were awarded with INR 82.7 lakhs ($100,000) each in prize money for being crowned as the World Champions.

In the 57kg category, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Irma Testa of Italy also clinched her first World Championships gold as she outpunched Karina Ibragimova of Kazakhstan with a 5-0 win. The Italian, who had to settle for silver at the tournament’s previous edition after a hard-fought 1-4 defeat against Lin Yu-Ting of Chinese Taipei, gave it her all to avoid a repeat of that result this time round and secured a memorable victory.

Following Nitu and Saweety’s historic triumphs, India’s quest for two more gold medals will continue on Sunday when the reigning World Champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain take to the ring for their respective finals bout.

Nikhat (50kg) will take on the two-time Asian champion Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam in a bid for back-to-back World Championships gold medals while Lovlina (75kg) will square off against the two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Caitlin Parker of Australia.

The ongoing prestigious event is witnessing the participation of 324 boxers, including several Olympic medallists, from 65 countries fighting for titles in the 12 weight categories. The tournament has a massive prize pool of INR 20 crore. (ANI)

Russia Ukraine

About 10,000 Ukrainians Living In Dire Conditions Amid Conflict

Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, about 10,000 Ukrainian civilians have been living in dire conditions, Al Jazeera reported citing the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Saturday.

The eastern city of Bakhmut has become a crucial target in Russia’s winter drive to completely annex Ukraine’s industrialised Donbas region. It is also the site of the largest fight in the Russia-Ukraine war in recent months.
Despite thousands of soldiers being killed on both sides, the Russian offensive has so far produced little progress.

“For the civilians that are stuck there, they are living in very dire conditions, spending almost the entire days in intense shelling in the shelters,” the ICRC’s Umar Khan said at a news briefing on Friday, speaking by video link from Dnipro, a city 260 km (160 miles) west of Bakhmut, Al Jazeera reported.

On Friday, Russian soldiers launched attacks on both the northern and southern parts of the front in the Donbas region, continuing their advance despite claims from Kyiv that Moscow’s operation was waning near Bakhmut, Al Jazeera reported.

The United States recently announced that it will send Ukraine USD 350 million in weapons and equipment as the battle with Russian forces continues for control of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.

“Today, pursuant to a delegation of authority from President Biden, I am authorizing our 34th drawdown of U.S. arms and equipment for Ukraine valued at USD 350 million,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a statement issued by the US State Department on Monday this week.

“This military assistance package includes more ammunition for US-provided HIMARS and howitzers that Ukraine is using to defend itself, as well as ammunition for Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, HARM missiles, anti-tank weapons, riverine boats, and other equipment,” the statement read.

The US applauds the more than 50 countries that have come together to provide support for Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity, the statement read.

“This week, as Russia’s unconscionable war of aggression against Ukraine continues at great human cost, we are again reminded of the boundless courage and steadfast resolve of the Ukrainian people, and the strong support for Ukraine across the international community,” Blinken said.

He added: “Russia alone could end its war today. Until Russia does, we will stand united with Ukraine for as long as it takes.” (ANI)

Sikkim: Trishakti Sappers, BRO Launch Massive Snow Clearing Ops

Braving intimidating altitudes and freezing temperatures, the Trishakti Sappers and Border Roads Organization (BRO) have launched a massive joint snow-clearing operation amid inhospitable weather conditions to clear the heavy snow in order to keep the strategic roads and communication lines open and facilitate movement of locals, military personnel and tourists.

Reportedly, Sikkim experiences extremely heavy winter snowfall every year. However, the snowfall pattern this year has been peculiar as the state witnessed late but concentrated snowfall.
“Snow clearance this year has been particularly challenging, considering the concentrated spells of snowfall, freezing any movement of civilians and army persons. Army Sappers deployed at altitudes ranging from 14,000-18,000 feet are relentlessly executing the snow clearance. These missions are not only benefiting the army but also the locals and tourists who are dependent heavily on the opening of roads,” said an Army official.

Troops of Trishakti Corps routinely rescue tourists stranded due to sudden snowfall. On March 11 & 15, major rescue missions were conducted by Trishakti Corps in East Sikkim under “Operation Himrahat”, wherein, 1,400 tourists stranded due to sudden snowfall were rescued to safety. As part of the ongoing operations, the Trishakti Sappers undertake the arduous and daunting task of snow clearance that involves manoeuvring through some of the highest passes in hostile terrain and sub-zero temperatures, as informed by the officials.

According to the officials, the roads and communication lines connecting the major towns, villages and forward areas get blocked due to heavy accumulation of snow and the Indian Army is working tirelessly to keep these important roads open to ensure connectivity all through the winters. (ANI)

Delhi Court Fixes April 5 For Hearing Sisodia’s Bail Plea

The Rouse Avenue Court on Saturday fixed April 5 for a hearing on the bail plea of former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia in a money laundering case pertaining to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).

The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday filed its lengthy reply opposing bail plea in the court. The Special Judge MK Nagpal adjourned the matter for April 5 and asked the ED and served a copy of the reply to Sisodia’s lawyer.
Sisodia is presently in Judicial Custody till April 5 in an ED case related to the Excise case.

Earlier, while sending Sisodia on ED remand Court said it cannot be ignored that investigation into an ED case is a complicated affair and keeping in view the intricacies of the case, the multiplicity of the persons/accused involved in the commission of the alleged offence of money laundering and the huge volume of the records or data seized during the investigation and required to be analysed by the Investigating Agency, it is bound to take some time and the IO or Investigating Agency cannot be faulted or blamed for the same, though they are duty bound to do and conclude it as early as possible.

Appearing for the ED earlier, advocates Zohaib Hossain submitted that huge mail data, mobile data all of that is being forensically analyzed. The mobile phone was changed the day when LG wrote to the CBI, which was used by Sisodia for a long time, it was submitted.

Counsel for ED had further submitted that the statements were confirmed by the recovery of the data received from the computer of the arrestee. Mobile data, email data, and cloud data were also received during the interpretation.

Earlier, ED said, the act of pro-active destruction of evidence leads to only one inference that Manish Sisodia made conscious efforts to destroy evidence of the offence of money laundering, said Enforcement Directorate while seeking remand of Manish Sisodia in connection with the Excise Policy case.

Appearing for ED, Advocates Zohaib Hossain and Naveen Kumar Matta had earlier submitted that even in the statement given by Manish Sisodia on March 7 and March 9 this year has been untrue. “On being asked about his association with Dinesh Arora, who handled the transfer of kickbacks from the South Group to Vijay Nair, he gave an answer contrary to what has been revealed by independent persons/stakeholders.

The ED earlier also told the court that Sisodia had purchased SIM cards and mobile phones in other people’s names.

There was a conspiracy behind framing the excise policy. The conspiracy was coordinated by Vijay Nair, along with others and the Excise policy was brought out for extraordinary profit margin for wholesalers, ED argued in the court.

ED told the court that the margin of 12 per cent of wholesale profit margin to private entities was never discussed in the GoM meeting.

Countering Sisodia’s lawyer’s arguments, the ED lawyer told the court that if the policy is a matter of executive then there would not be a coal scam or a 2G scam.

The ED on March 9 arrested former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia in the liquor policy case, after hours of questioning at Tihar Jail. He was arrested during his judicial custody in Tihar Jail, where he was lodged after his arrest by the CBI.

Sisodia had been arrested by the CBI in the liquor policy case on February 26,this year. The same Court on March 24, had kept the order reserved on the bail plea of Sisdodia in the CBI case and fixed March 31, for pronouncement of the order.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI earlier in its ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD). (ANI)
