Security Beefed Up Around Indian Consulate In San Francisco After Khalistani Protest

Security Beefed Up Around Indian Consulate In San Francisco After Khalistani Protest

More than 200 protesters waving Khalistan flags descended upon the Indian Consulate in San Francisco on Wednesday for a planned demonstration amid a heightened security presence of the San Francisco Police Department (SFDP).

Unlike the violent disorder on Sunday when the Consulate came under attack, the protesters were heavily barricaded across the road with uniformed SFPD officers standing guard and patrolling the area.
The protesters included turbaned men of all ages who chanted pro-Khalistan slogans. They came in from different parts of the Bay area.

The organisers used mikes to make anti-India speeches both in English and Punjabi language and attack the Punjab Police for alleged human rights violations.

When ANI tried to talk to one of the protestors, he made allegations of Indian media bias for calling them fringe elements and backed by Pakistan’s spy agency ISI.

“There have been flyers circulating on social media and it’s the youth that’s at the forefront of protests like these,” a pro-Khalistan youth told ANI.

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco has been working with enforcement agencies to secure its premises and the diplomats working at the mission.

“Thank you @SFPDChief for the assurances. Met Chief Scott to discuss the attack on @CGISFO Chancery building on March 19 and request to raise the level of protection to the Consulate premises and personnel,” Consul General of India at San Francisco Ambassador Nagendra Prasad tweeted on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has said vandalism at Indian Consulate in San Francisco is “absolutely unacceptable” and is condemned by the US.

“We certainly condemn that vandalism, it’s absolutely unacceptable. State Department’s diplomatic security service is working with local authorities to properly investigate. The state Department will work on infrastructure perspective to repair the damage,” Kirby said.

US State Department spokesperson told ANI: “The United States condemns the attack against the Indian Consulate and any attack against diplomatic facilities within the United States. We pledge to defend the safety and security of these facilities as well as the diplomats who work within them.”

Khalistan supporters have started creating chaos across the world. After vandalism in London, Khalistan supporters allegedly attacked Indian Consulate in San Francisco (SFO). Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media.

Visuals shared online show a huge mob brandishing Khalistan flags mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans as they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

In a meeting with the US Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi on Monday, India conveyed its strong protest at the vandalisation of the property of the Consulate General of India, San Francisco.

“The US Government was reminded of its basic obligation to protect and secure diplomatic representation. It was asked to take appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Our Embassy in Washington D.C. also conveyed our concerns to the US State Department along similar lines,” read the Ministry of External Affairs press release. (ANI)

Indian High Commission In UK Raises Giant Tricolour In Response To Khalistanis

Indian High Commission In UK Raises Giant Tricolour In Response To Khalistanis

In an epic reply to Khalistani supporters who vandalised the Indian High Commission in the UK, it put up a giant Tricolour atop the building.

A giant Tricolour was put up by the Indian High Commission team atop the High Commission building in London, UK.

On March 19, Khalistani radicals in large numbers protested and vandalised India’s flag at the Indian High Commission. India had strongly protested against Khalistani elements, demanding the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators.

Earlier on Wednesday, barricades from outside British High Commission in New Delhi were removed.

The seniormost UK diplomat in New Delhi was summoned on Sunday night after the Indian High Commission was vandalised, the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official release earlier.

An explanation was demanded for the complete absence of British security that allowed suspected pro-Khalistan elements to enter the High Commission premises. The diplomat was reminded in this regard of the basic obligations of the UK Government under the Vienna Convention.

“India finds unacceptable the indifference of the UK Government to the security of Indian diplomatic premises and personnel in the UK,” the MEA release said.

The British High Commissioner Alex Ellis condemned the “disgraceful acts” outside the Indian High Commission, calling it totally unacceptable.

“I condemn the disgraceful acts today against the people and premises of the High Commission of India – totally unacceptable,” British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis tweeted earlier.

The desecration of the national flag last Sunday led to an unprecedented outpouring of support from the diverse Indian community settled in Britain.

Meanwhile, Khalistani radicals on March 22 staged anti-India protests once again outside the Indian High Commission in London. However, the protesters raising “Khalistan Zindabaad” slogans were restricted due to barricading. Metropolitan Police guarded the Indian High Commission against the pro-Khalistani radicals.

Since the weekend, several uniformed officers had been patrolling the area in Aldwych and Metropolitan Police vans were stationed at India Place.

India had launched a strong protest with the United Kingdom over the vandalisation incident at the Indian High Commission in London and has conveyed that there is a need for the British authorities to put up adequate security set-up, Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra said on Monday. (ANI)

It's A Shame: Gen VK Singh On Disbandment Of TSD

It’s A Shame: Gen VK Singh On Disbandment Of TSD

Union Minister of State Minister of State for Civil Aviation and former Army Chief General VK Singh has said that Technical Support Division (TSD), a military intelligence unit that was later disbanded, could have bettered a lot of things and he considers it a shame that it was taken off.

TSD was an Indian Military Intelligence unit formed when Gen VK Singh was the Army chief.
In an exclusive interview with ANI, the former Army Chief said anything which deals with intelligence is both clandestine, secretive “and also it is supposed to do certain tasks every intelligence outfit that you take”.

“First time, the discussion came up was with the then Director General of Military Intelligence (DGMI). It came up because I was talking about the Mumbai thing 26/11, about how we could have done things better…He said that well at the end of it, the NSA had called the Chief, and asked what could you do on it. And they said nothing, not our mandate. After all, you are mandated to say ‘military intelligence is supposed to look after only this area, other agencies will look after that area, so that there is no clash. My thinking is the work of any military agency will always have an overlap. If you do not have overlap, you will miss out on things”.

Gen VK Singh, who was the Army Chief between March 2010 and May 31, 2012, said that the idea was to have an intelligence outfit that should be more focused on human intelligence.

“We talked about it, and the idea came up that we should have an intelligence outfit which should be more human intelligence-oriented, should be able to have reliable sources on the other side, who should be able to give you the type of information you are looking for, which is inimical to the country. And, information flow should become. Once, this was clear, we decided let’ form a pilot project, because till the time you don’t try it out, you don’t want to make it permanent. So, it was a pilot project, it was called ‘TSD’, for want of anonymity. I think our motivation came from ‘R&AW’. So, it became Technical Support Division, there was nothing technical about it. It was all based on human intelligence,” he said.

Gen VK Singh said that they decided to choose the best people for the job after thoroughly scrutinising them.

“And we chose the best people, the people whom we thoroughly scrutinised in terms of the work they have done, in terms of the output they had, and whether they will fit into this, the idea, that we had. Once we had chosen the commanding officer, he was given free hand to choose people. So that, he has the trust, because any outfit like this, survives on trust, on professionalism, but will not survive on acrimony. Acrimony that stretches the seams of the organisation. They chose, they got all the support, and they did a tremendous amount of work. It’s a shame that it was done away. The type of work they did, had we continued with that, a lot of things which would have become better. Lot of things,” Gen VK Singh added.

“As the organisation grows, the intelligence and the other types of things will grow, will cooperate with other agencies, and then the canvas becomes different. We were sharing our inputs, where we felt we needed action, from an external agency. We shared our inputs, we told them this is what is happening, you better take action,” he added.

Asked if he had meetings with the then Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) on TSD and whether the PM had ever asked about the cross-border operations, he said, “No, why should I? It is a pilot project, we are sharing information. If I gave a certain amount of information to the NSA, I told them this is from my agency, he was not asking which agency has given you. The PM of that time was not interested in ‘kisne mara’? I will put it that way.”

The former Army Chief said, “I had talked of Maldives, that information was from my agency, not from anybody else. The assessment of my agency was 150 per cent right. They said Abdulla Yameen ( former President of Maldives) will not toe our line, Yameen will go with China. And that was not the assessment on the level at which hard decision-making is done. That was not the assessment at NSA level”.

The Congress-led UPA government was in power from 2004 to 2014.

Responding to the allegations of surveillance against TSD, Gen VK Singh, who is also Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, said, “Accusations, you can do anything, you can put a vehicle. The problem is somebody right from big name, and once he got associated with, especially once he got involved in particular things. It was in his interest to somehow, bring that defamation thing. Now, how do you do it? Coup was not going to stick. So, ‘He was snooping on the ministers’. Nothing. What is there to bug into Defence Minister’s Office, you could walk up to Defence Minister and talk to him what you wanted to. What is there to be bugged? I still can’t understand it”.

On being asked if he has any regrets, the union minister said that he only wanted to do something for the country.

“You could have not done anything, just relax, going to the cocktail circuit. Forget about the nation, what difference does it make? You have reached a pinnacle in the service, just remain there, and just go out. What difference does it make? But, unfortunately, that is not my make-up. I wanted to do something. And that’s why I said, had this agency stayed, you would have found a difference. Ten years, they would have created a tremendous amount of work, in all our areas, not just one,” he said.

Gen VK Singh, who is MP from Ghaziabad, said that sources play a very important role in the working of an intelligence outfit, and works on trust.

“Every area was being taken care of. Our expertise was developing. We had developed plan to develop expertise with selected people, with what they would do. All that is gone. And, anybody who deals with intelligence and has done a fair amount of work, has seen things, make sources. Source is like most loyal dog you can have. One man that will give you that information, it takes time to build that trust, that I am not going to give up on him, and he is not going to give up on me. The day that goes away, you can’t recruit him again,” he said.

Whether the idea of TSD, should be revived, to this the former Army Chief said that it should be left to those at the helm of it.

“See, let’s leave it to the people who are at the helm of this. It’s a very serious matter, what you do, what you plan, what your aim is. As Chief at that time, my aim was very simple. These are my enemies, this is what is likely to happen. What is that I can do to contribute towards that? I can gather intelligence, I can carry out certain things, which will pre-empt certain things happening at my country. All with the best possible manpower that you could have selected, and all whom you could trust.”

Talking about the trauma faced by those involved, in their private lives, once the idea of TSD was taken off, Gen VK Singh said, “That’s what pains me the most. They were singled out, because I think they didn’t like the person who created. I take it as personal. Their agony was my agony, if they spent sleepless nights, I also spent sleepless nights, because I could feel their pain, and pain for doing something for the country. We were not doing anything personal, there was nothing personal involved in this. You drive a person to become a psyche case. You get after a person, you put wrong charges”.

“Let me take you back to a similarity in the Samba spy case. What happened then? Our own people destroyed our own people, made stories out of it. Here, the pain was the same. They just wanted someone to say that ‘Chief told us to snoop on A, B, C’,” he added.

He also said that it is up to the individuals to take lessons and see when they reach responsible positions, they are able to do things right.

General V K Singh donned many hats before turning to be a full-time politician. Coming from a family of soldiers, Singh served 42 years in the Indian Army, which saw him on the front lines of combat, in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 and also in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. He has seen awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Yudh Seva Medal.

General Singh also joined India Against Corruption movement with Anna Hazare but moved on to the BJP. (ANI)

This Is What Ajay Has To Say About Bholaa

Actor Ajay Devgn is gearing up for the release of his film ‘Bholaa’.

Ramzan To Start On March 24

Ramzan To Start On March 24

Lucknow’s Markazi Chand Committee on Wednesday announced that the month of Ramzan will begin on Friday as the crescent moon was not sighted anywhere in the country.

“The crescent for Ramadan 2023 has not been sighted on March 22 evening. Hence, the first Ramzan fast this year will be observed on March 24, on Jumma (Friday),” Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali told ANI.

The Ramzan fasting date changes yearly as the Muslim community follows the Islamic calendar based on the lunar cycle or phases of the moon. The starting and end date of Ramzan depends on the sighting of the crescent moon.

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, an organisation of Muslim scholars in India, also announced that Ramzan month would begin on March 24, Friday.

With the Hindu festival of Navratri currently being celebrated, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali also urged the Muslim community to take care of the religious sentiments of one another.

“I urge brothers and sisters to observe Roza for the welfare, prosperity and progress of the country along with their family members. The Islamic Centre of India has also issued a guideline for people who would observe Roza this month. All religious sentiments should be respected,” he added.

The crescent moon for Ramzan is first sighted in Saudi Arabia and some parts of India along with some Western countries and, usually a day later, in the rest of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other countries. (ANI)

Saudi Arabia Unwilling To Give Dole Outs To Pakistan

Saudi Arabia Unwilling To Give Dole Outs To Pakistan

Saudi Arabia is no longer willing to bail out Islamabad and refused to provide ‘easy money’ to Pakistan, demanding economic reforms, reported Middle East Eye.

Pakistan is in dire need of sustained US dollar inflows to avoid defaulting on nearly USD 80 billion of international loan repayments over the next three and a half years. The country is currently sitting on just USD 3 billion in foreign exchange reserves.

Saudi Arabia’s decision to refuse to provide any further bailouts or interest-free loans to Pakistan has left the government in Islamabad in shock and has prompted the finance minister to complain that even friendly countries aren’t keen on helping Pakistan out of its economic emergency, Middle East Eye reported.

Umar Karim, an associate fellow at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies, said Pakistani authorities are in a state of shock.

“While previously Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries would bail Pakistan out off the back of a phone call from the foreign minister or the prime minister, this time around they are really being put through the mill,” Karim told Middle East Eye.

It is believed that on a recent trip, even the Pakistani military chief couldn’t convince Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to release emergency funding for the country.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, the Saudi finance minister made the Kingdom’s new policy very clear, reported Middle East Eye.

Mohammed al-Jadaan said, “We used to give direct grants and deposits without strings attached and we are changing that. We are working with multilateral institutions to actually say we need to see reforms.”

“We are taxing our people, we are expecting also others to do the same, to do their efforts. We want to help but we want you also to do your part.”

“Saudi Arabia is on a different course now. They’ve reset their relationship with other countries and refused to give financial handouts to namely: Jordan, Morocco and even Egypt. However, Pakistan, which is far more dysfunctional than all of the others, should have seen it coming,” Alam told Middle East Eye.

Meanwhile, the rate of inflation in Pakistan is set to hit 33 per cent in the coming months and the country’s currency has devalued nearly 65 per cent in the last 12 months.

“Pakistan’s been lulled by a false sense of security”, the analyst said, “that with a population of over 220 million and a comprehensive nuclear weapons programme, it’s too big for the world to let it fail. This has bred complacency across successive governments and the country’s military leadership of easy loans or bailouts.”

Nearly six months ago, in a bid to stem the outflow of foreign exchange, the Pakistani government stopped almost all imports, leading to a raw materials shortage across manufacturing sectors and a temporary shutdown of several automobile manufacturing plants and textile factories.

Saudi Arabia and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are both demanding economic reforms from Pakistan.

Pakistan is locked in difficult negotiations with the IMF over its 13th bailout package since the 1980s, reported Middle East Eye.

If an agreement isn’t struck soon, Pakistan will find it increasingly difficult to secure international loans, as its credit rating has been downgraded to junk. (ANI)

Indian Army Reintroduces Millet Flour In Jawans' Ration

Indian Army Reintroduces Millet Flour In Jawans’ Ration

With a view of promoting the consumption of millets in light of the UN declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets, the Indian Army steered the introduction of Millets Flour in the rations of soldiers, an official statement said on Wednesday.

This landmark decision will ensure troops are supplied with native and traditional grains after over half a century when these were discontinued in favour of Wheat Atta.

According to the statement, traditional millet foods with proven health benefits and suited to our geographical and climatic conditions would be a vital step in mitigating lifestyle diseases and enhancing the satisfaction and morale of the troops.

Millets would now form an integral part of the daily meal for all ranks.

Government sanction has been sought to procure millet flour not exceeding 25 per cent of the authorised entitlement of Cereals (Rice and Wheat Atta), in rations for troops commencing from the year 2023-24 onwards, the statement added.

According to the statement, procurement and issue will be based on the option exercised and quantity demanded. Three popular varieties of millets flour i.e. Bajra, Jowar and Ragi will be issued to troops duly considering preference. Millets have the benefit of being a good source of proteins, micro-nutrients and phytochemicals thus boosting the nutritional profile of a Soldier’s diet.

In addition, advisories have been issued for Millets to be extensively used in organised functions, Barakhanas, canteens and in-home cooking.

Centralised training of chefs is being undertaken to prepare wholesome, tasty and nutritious millet dishes. Special emphasis on introducing value-added millet items and snacks to troops deployed along Northern borders has been given, the statement added.

According to the statement, millet foods are being introduced through CSD canteens, and dedicated corners are being set up in shopping complexes. ‘Know your Millet’ awareness campaigns are also being conducted in educational institutions.

Meanwhile, Union agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar has directed its agency National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) to promote the ‘International Year of Millets 2023’ on a global scale.

Accordingly, NAFED has started extending marketing linkage to millet-centric startups, setting up a millet corner in NAFED Bazaar Retail Stores, and installing of millet vending machines across Delhi NCR.

“We are also in process to establish a Millets Experience Centre at Delhi Haat, INA to promote nutritious Millets and create awareness on the rich history of India through Millet based dishes,” said the ministry in a release on Monday.

NAFED has also developed premium quality millet gift hampers which have been showcased at the G20 1st Employment Working Group Meeting under the aegis of the Ministry of Labour and Employment at Jodhpur, Rajasthan. These hampers are developed with the idea to promote millers and demonstrate support and commitment to the promotion of such nutritious products. (ANI)
