Amritpal’s Aide Papalpreet Singh Arrested

In a major crackdown against ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief, the Punjab Police in a joint operation arrested pro-Khalistani sympathizer Amritpal Singh’s aide Papalpreet Singh arrested from Hoshiarpur, informed sources on Monday.

Papalpreet Singh was arrested in an operation conducted by Punjab Police and its counter-intelligence unit.
On March 30, ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief and pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh surfaced in a new video and said he was not “a fugitive” and would soon “appear in front of the world”.

In the unverified video, Amritpal Singh sought to address some comments about the video that surfaced on Wednesday.

“I uploaded a video yesterday. It was addressed to people. Public thinks that maybe the video was made in police custody because I was looking here and there in that video while talking. You can see other earlier video, I don’t talk too much looking at the camera,” he said.

Amritpal Singh said those who think that he has run away or left friends, “get that thing out of your mind”.

Earlier on March 18, Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal and his aides.

According to the police, the accused identified as Amrik Singh, a resident of RS Pura, and his wife Paramjit Kour were detained for reportedly having links with Papalpreet Singh, a key aide of Amritpal Singh.

The accused duo were handed over to Punjab police later, an officer of Jammu police said.

Delhi Police said that the head of the pro-Khalistani outfit Waris Punjab De is suspected of having left the national capital.

According to sources, Delhi Police and Punjab Police were conducting a search operation in Delhi and its borders after receiving intelligence inputs of a sighting of Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal at Delhi’s ISBT bus terminal.

Intelligence inputs had suggested that he may be disguised as a sadhu. Papalpreet Singh is accompanying Amritpal Singh, sources said.

The Punjab Police had expressed doubts about Amritpal entering the Delhi border using any vehicle other than a bus. Following the input, Delhi Police went on alert mode and are trying to track Amritpal’s movements.

Amritpal is on the run since March 18, the day Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt for him.

The crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal’s supporters stormed Ajnala police station in Amritsar on February 23 demanding the release of one of his close aides, Lovepreet Toofan. (ANI)

Indian trade with UK

India Denies Reports Of Halting Trade Talks With UK

India dismissed as “baseless” reports in British media stating that it had halted talks for a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom over the attack on the Indian high commission in London last month, government sources said on Monday.

London-based newspaper The Times in its April 10 edition citing senior British government sources reported that the Indian government has “disengaged” from trade talks and made it clear that there would be no progress “without a public condemnation of the Khalistan movement.”
An Indian government source has “denied” the UK publication’s report and termed it as “baseless.”

The India-UK Free Trade Agreement talks were launched on June 17, 2022,

“Indians don’t want to talk about trade until they get a very public demonstration of the condemnation of Khalistan extremism in the UK,” The Times quoted a British official statement saying.

On March 19 this year, protesters holding Khalistan banners staged a demonstration outside the High Commission in London. One of the protestors climbed up its balcony and pulled down the Indian national flag of India. The protest was being held to denounce the recent police action in Punjab.

In a video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, a protestor is seen on the balcony attempting to bring down the Indian flag. At the end of the video, another man is seen reaching the balcony and wresting the Tricolour back from the Khalistan supporter.

The British High Commissioner Alex Ellis condemned the attack on the Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom as “disgraceful acts” and called it totally unacceptable.

New Delhi also had summoned the senior-most British diplomat UK diplomat, deputy high commissioner Christina Scott, to lodge a protest.

“It is expected that the UK Government would take immediate steps to identify, arrest and prosecute each one of those involved in today’s incident, and put in place stringent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents,” according to an official press release by the Minstry of External Affairs (MEA).

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had recently said that India expects to see more action, than just assurance and hoped that foreign governments will act against and prosecute those involved in the incident.

“On the issues of security, whenever we feel there is an issue relating to the security of our missions abroad, high commissions and embassies, this issue is taken up. Whenever we have concerns where we feel that there will be some activities that may harm our interests, we do take it up,” he said while answering a media query on the vandalism.

Khalistan supporters also allegedly attacked Indian Consulate in San Francisco (SFO). Videos of supporters breaking the doors and barging into the office surfaced on social media.

Though visuals of the vandalism at the San Francisco consulate have been doing the rounds of social media, the incident is yet to be confirmed by Indian officials.

While the visuals confirmed that the incident happened at the consulate, the date could not be ascertained.

Visuals shared online show a sizeable mob brandishing Khalistan flags and mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. Raising pro-Khalistan slogans, they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

Meanwhile, the FTA, which aims to double bilateral trade between Indian and the UK by the year 2030 was expected to conclude by Diwali last year but the deal did not go through because the meeting was postponed.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had in December 2022 met with UK Secretary of State for International Trade Kemi Badenoch in New Delhi to discuss India-UK FTA negotiations. Both Ministers had reaffirmed their commitment to the negotiations which would unlock the full potential of boosting jobs, investments and exports between the two countries.

India and UK concluded the eighth round of negotiations for a trade deal on March 31.

The last round of India-UK dialogue over the FTA had concluded on February 10. (ANI)

Chhattisgarh's Violence

Chhattisgarh’s Violence: VHP Calls State Bandh Today

In view of a Statewide ‘bandh’ call by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other organisations over violence in Chhattisgarh’s Bemetara district, workers of the outfit and those of BJP, which has lent support to the protest, have urged people to close their businesses on Monday.

On Saturday, 22-year-old, Bhuneswar Sahu, was killed in a clash between two groups in the Biranpur village. Three police personnel were also injured in the incident.
Raipur Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Maheshwari said, “Today a bandh has been called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Bajrang Dal. An additional police force has also been deployed in all police stations. More than 400 police officers have been deployed in all the police stations, Extra patrolling is also being done.”

“We’ve got information that they plan to hold a ‘chakka jam’ at three to four locations. We will try to disperse them as soon as possible,” the police official said.

BJP district president Jayanti Patel said the decision for a ‘bandh’ was necessary due to the violence in the state. He said that BJP is supporting the call for the bandh.

Superintendent of police (SP) of Bemetara, Indira Kalyan Elesela had said yesterday, “A bandh has been called tomorrow in view of yesterday’s incident. We are ready for this. We hope everything remains peaceful.”

“We are fully prepared. The crowd has been controlled by installing barricades at many places,” he added.

Earlier on Sunday, State BJP spokesperson Kedar Gupta said, “Bharatiya Janata Party will join the Chhattisgarh bandh called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad over the incident in Bemetara that resulted in the death of one youth and the bandh will be held on Monday.”

“… the incident took place in Saja Vidhansabha. There were continuously eight cases of love jihad in that area and Sahu Samaj was creating public awareness that Love Jihad is a crime”, Gupta said.

He also alleged conspiracy behind the youth’s murder and the government was supporting the accused.

Meanwhile, amid heavy police deployment and imposition of Section 144 in the area, the last rites of Bhuneswar Sahu, was performed on Sunday.

According to police, as per preliminary information, on Saturday (April 8) a fight broke out between children belonging to two groups in Biranpur village and subsequently tension escalated leading to a clash between members of two groups.

Police have so far arrested 11 people in connection with the violence and are investigating the case. (ANI)

Chinese Military Craft

Taiwan: 70 Chinese Military Craft, 11 Naval Ships Around Country

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry detected 70 Chinese military aircraft and 11 naval ships around Taiwan by 6 am on Monday and its armed forces were monitoring the situation to respond to these activities.

“70 PLA aircraft and 11 PLAN vessels around Taiwan were detected by 6 a.m.(UTC+8) today. R.O.C. Armed Forces have monitored the situation and tasked CAP aircraft, Navy vessels, and land-based missile systems to respond these activities,” Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said in a tweet.
“35 of the detected aircraft(SU-308, J-114, J-106, J-168, TB-001 UCAV, Y-9EW, Y-8 ASW, J-15*4, CH-4 UCAV, KJ-500 AEW&C) had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s southwest and southeast ADIZ, flight paths as illustrated,” it added.

China entered the third day of the drills, which kickstarted on Saturday (April 8), right after Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen returned from the US where she met House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a meeting to which China strictly showed opposition.

Al Jazeera reported that the declaration was made on Sunday as Taiwan’s defence ministry said that it had discovered numerous Chinese air force sorties and was keeping an eye on Beijing’s missile forces.

Taiwan, on Sunday, tracked 71 Chinese military aircraft, and 9 naval ships by 6 am. “45 of the detected aircraft(SU-308, J-114, J-1016, J-1610, TB-001 UCAV, Y-9EW, Y-8 ASW, H-6K*2, Y-20, KJ-500) had crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered Taiwan’s southwest ADIZ, flight paths as illustrated,” the Ministry said.

China, which claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, began three days of military exercises around the island on Saturday, the day after President Tsai Ing-wen returned to Taipei from Los Angeles, where she met with US House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Meanwhile, Taiwan also lodged a protest against Chinese military drills around Taiwan, saying that the country would not yield to threats.

Taking to Twitter, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said, “#Taiwan is our homeland, and no matter where we go or what we encounter, she is always charming and beautiful. Every story on this land is etched in our memories. We, #ROCArmedForces, are fighting with all our heart to defend our homeland and to protect our home together.”

Tensions between China and Taiwan escalated after the US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to the country in August last year. China raised objections to Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

This time, Taiwan retaliated by sending aircraft, naval boats, and land-based missiles to observe PLA planes and ships. (ANI)

Air India’s London Flight Returns Delhi After Unruly Passenger Fights

An Air India’s London-bound flight returned to Delhi airport after a mid-air brawl in which a passenger caused “physical harm” to cabin crew members.

An Air India official told ANI, “AI-111 Delhi to London flight with 256 passengers landed safely at Delhi airport after an unruly behaviour of passenger created ruckus on board.”
The flight, which took off for Heathrow Airport (London) at around 6:30 am on Monday returned to Delhi airport at around 10 am after the crew reported to pilots about the physical altercation mid-flight.

In a statement, Air India said, “Air India flight AI 111 scheduled to operate Delhi-London Heathrow on April 10, 2023, returned to Delhi shortly after departure due to the serious unruly behaviour of a passenger on board. Not heeding verbal and written warnings, the passenger continued with unruly behaviour including causing physical harm to two of the cabin crew members.”

“The pilot in command decided to return to Delhi and the passenger was handed over to the security personnel upon landing. An FIR has also been lodged with the police. Safety, security and dignity of all on board are important to us at Air India. We are providing all possible support to the affected crew members. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers and have rescheduled the flight to depart for London this afternoon,” Air India said.

After the plane landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Air India filed a police complaint about the passenger’s “indecent behaviour” at the police station. Legal action is being taken against the said passenger.

The airline said it has also informed the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) about the incident.

This is not the first time Air India witnessed such a ruckus on a flight. Earlier, in January, a man, identified as Shankar Mishra was arrested of allegedly urinating on a woman on board an AI flight on November 26 last year. The Delhi Police arrested him on January 6 this year.

In an inebriated condition, Mishra urinated on a 70-year-old woman on an Air India flight on November 26 last year.

Delhi Police had registered an FIR against him on January 4 on a complaint given by the woman to Air India.

The police registered an FIR under sections 354, 509, and 510 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 23 of the Indian Aircraft Act. Both the accused and the victim are from outside Delhi. (ANI)

Sachin on Gehlot's Governance

Rajasthan Achieved Leadership Under Gehlot’s Governance: Sachin Pilot’s Concerns

Hours after Sachin Pilot raised concerns regarding non-action against the alleged cases of corruption under the BJP government in Rajasthan, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday, in a statement said that the party has achieved landmark achievements under CM Ashok Gehlot’s tenure, based on which the party will seek a renewed mandate from the people later this year.

Jairam Ramesh, who is the party general secretary of Communications, said in a statement, “The Congress Government in Rajasthan with Ashok Gehlot as CM has implemented a large number of schemes and taken many new initiatives that have impacted the people profoundly. This has given the state a leadership position in governance in our country”
The Congress MP further added, “The Bharat Jodo Yatra in Rajasthan was an outstanding success made possible by the dedication and determination of the party organisation in the state. Later in the year, the Congress will seek a renewed mandate from the people on the strength of these landmark achievements and the collective efforts of our organisation”.

This came hours after Sachin Pilot reiterated his demand of investigating the alleged cases of corruption under the tenure of the Vasundhara Raje-led BJP government in Rajasthan.

He said that despite writing to the Chief Minister multiple times, he had not received any answer from him.

“I wrote to the Chief Minister on March 28 last year, and when I didn’t get a reply, I wrote to him again on November 2. I urged him to investigate all the issues, that we raised, both I and CM Gehlot. Land mafia, liquor mafia, mining mafia or other cases. I said that elections are coming and we must show the public that there is no difference between our promises and our work,” Pilot said at a press conference.

He further added, “We all know that the central government has been misusing CBI, ED, and Income Tax departments. 95 per cent of the ED investigation is against the Opposition parties. They (BJP) are trying to weaken the Opposition by putting false charges. While we are not misusing the agencies in the state, we are not even using them against the alleged corruption cases. Our workers and public should not think that we don’t fulfil our promises”. (ANI)

Prime Minister Modi ended his Chennai visit by meeting Manikandan. Later, PM Modi posted a picture with Manikandan in which he could be seen taking a selfie.

“A special selfie. In Chennai I met Thiru S. Manikandan. He is a proud BJP Tamil Nadu Karyakarta from Erode, serving as a booth president. Modi on tiger population

India’s Biodiversity Key To Growing Tiger Population: Modi

Highlighting the growing tiger population in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India’s tradition and culture, as well as the biodiversity in the country, were among the major reasons for this achievement.

PM Modi inaugurated the ‘Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger’ on Sunday.
Addressing the inaugural session of commemoration of ’50 Years of Project Tiger’ in Mysuru, PM Modi emphasised that protection of wildlife is a universal issue.

“Project Tiger leads the way in the protection and conservation of the big cats. International Big Cat Alliance is our endeavour for the protection and conservation of big cats,” he said.

The success of Project Tiger, PM Modi said is a matter of pride not only for India but also for the world. India has not only conserved tigers but has also given them an ecosystem to flourish.

While celebrating 75 years of Independence, India added 11 wetlands to its list of Ramsar sites. This took the total number of Ramsar sites to 75, he said.

For wildlife to thrive, Prime Minister said it is important for ecosystems to thrive and the same has been happening in the country.

PM Modi said, “A better future for humanity is possible only when our environment remains safe and our biodiversity continues to expand. This responsibility belongs to all of us, it belongs to the whole world. We are continuously encouraging this spirit during our G20 presidency.”

He said India is a country where protecting nature is part of the culture.

Prime Minister Modi said, “When their population is stable or decreasing in many tiger reserve countries, then why is it increasing rapidly in India? This is because of the tradition and culture of India and the biodiversity in the Indian society, as well as our natural urge for the environment.”

“With only 2.4 per cent of the world’s land area, India contributes about 8 per cent of known global biodiversity. India is home to the largest tiger range country in the world. We do not believe in the conflict between ecology and economy, but give importance to co-existence between the two,” he said.

In the last decade, PM Modi said the number of community reserves increased from 43 to over 100. The number of national parks and sanctuaries, around which eco-sensitive zones were notified, increased from 9 to 468 in a decade, he said.

The success of Project Tiger is a matter of pride not only for India but for the whole world, he said assign that India consists of around 75 per cent of the world’s tiger population.

Prime Minister Modi said India is the only country in the world to have Asiatic lions. The lion population in India has increased from 525 in 2015 to 675 in 2020. The leopard population went up by over 60 per cent in just four years.

Referring to ‘Project Cheetah’, PM Modi said, “Cheetahs had become extinct in India decades ago. We brought this magnificent big cat to India from Namibia and South Africa. This is the first successful trans-continental translocation of the big cat. A few days ago, four beautiful cubs were born in Kuno National Park,” he said.

He stressed that the presence of Big Cats has made a positive impact on the lives and ecology of the local people everywhere. Due to Big Cats, PM said the number of tourists to Tiger Reserves has increased and this has strengthened the local economy.

He further said, “The lifestyle of the tribal society also helps a lot in understanding the vision of ‘Mission Life’ ie Lifestyle for Environment. That is why I request all of you to definitely take something from the life and tradition of tribal society for your country and society.”

“The Elephant Whispers documentary that won an Oscar also reflects our legacy of the wonderful relationship between nature and creatures. I urge you (foreign dignitaries) to take something from the life and tradition of our tribal society,” added PM Modi.

With the aim to curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade, Prime Minister on Sunday launched the International Big Cats Alliance (IBCA) in Karnataka.

During the programme, he released the publication ‘Amrit Kaal Ka Vision for Tiger Conservation’, a summary report of 5th cycle of Management Effective Evaluation of Tiger Reserves.

He also released a summary report of All India Tiger Estimation (5th cycle).

PM Modi also released a commemorative coin on the completion of 50 years of Project Tiger.

He interacted with field directors of tiger reserves that have scored highest in the recently concluded 5th cycle of the Management Effectiveness Evaluation exercise.

According to Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the IBCA will focus on the protection and conservation of seven major big cats of the world — Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah.

In July 2019, Prime Minister Modi called for an Alliance of Global Leaders to firmly curb poaching and illegal wildlife trade in Asia. (ANI)

Tharoor on Mis governance In Bengaluru

Cong A Respectable Alternative To Misgovernance In Bengaluru: Tharoor

Hitting out at Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said people of the poll-bound southern state have endured misgovernance in the last four years.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru on Sunday, Tharoor said when there is misgovernance and “there is nothing to see”, people inevitably wonder what they need the government for.
“When there is misgovernance and there is nothing to see, people inevitably wonder what they need the government for. People are interested very much in seeing the Congress as a respectable alternative to the misgovernance they’ve endured in the last 4 years,” said Tharoor.

He said there are essential needs of the people that have not been met by the BJP government and the Congress has already come up with specific promises to fulfil people’s needs.

The Congress MP said IT investment in the state has been plummeting for the last 3-4 years.

“Bengaluru has such great potential. It is so sad that the city, which was evidently the most favoured destination for IT investment till a few years ago, has seen investments plummeting over the last 3-4 years,” he said.

On Sharad Pawar’s statement that there was no need for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Hindenburg-Adani row, he said that NCP chief’s logic can be understood as the ruling party will have a 50 per cent majority in the panel, if one is formed to probe the claims against the Adani Group.

“His (Sharad Pawar) logic can be understood because the rule for constituting a JPC is that the ruling party will be part of it, and above 50 per cent of members in the JPC will be from the NDA, if one is formed. But we still want the Opposition to ask questions and seek answers and evidence through the JPC. The NCP stood with us in the Parliament and during our protest march to Vijay Chowk,” said Thaoor.

With the Karnataka Assembly polls drawing near, a meeting of senior Congress leaders regarding the selection of candidates for the Karnataka elections will be held at party president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence this evening.

Rahul Gandhi is likely to attend this meeting.

The Congress is yet to announce the names of candidates for 58 seats.

The Congress, on March 25, announced its first list of 124 candidates for the Assembly polls. The list included former chief minister Siddaramaiah and the party’s state president DK Shivakumar.

Elections in Karnataka are slated to be held in a single phase on May 10 and the counting of votes will be held on May 13. Former chief minister Siddaramaiah will be contesting from the Varuna constituency while DK Shivakumar has been fielded in Kanakapura.

Siddaramaiah had expressed his interest to contest from the Kolar constituency but the Congress High Command instructed him to drop the plan following disagreements between the party’s local leaders in the constituency. The party has fielded M Roopakala from the Kolar Gold Field constituency.

The ruling BJP currently holds a majority in the Assembly with 119 seats while the Congress and the JD(S) have 75 and 28 seats respectively.

All three key political players in the state — BJP, Congress and the JD(S) — have been exchanging barbs as their poll campaign moves through the gears. The latter are attempting to corner the ruling BJP on the issue of corruption.

The model code of conduct is currently in force in the state. (ANI)
