Communal Forces Trying To Create Trouble, Won’t Succeed: Pinarayi

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday praised the police force in the State for helping maintain peace and tranquillity despite attempts by communal elements to create conflicts.

“Kerala is a peaceful place compared to other states in our country. A peaceful atmosphere prevails here. Communal disturbances and loss of life are taking in many places. Nothing like that happens in Kerala,” he said.

CM Vijayan was inaugurating the State conference of the Kerala police officers’ Association.

“Communal forces are trying to create conflicts here. But they cannot succeed in their nefarious activities due to the prevalent conditions here. The police are on their guard against these forces,” the chief minister said.

“The atmosphere of our State should remain peaceful. Any attempt to break it cannot be tolerated,” the Chief Minister said.

Vijayan said that Kerala is known for being the least corrupt State in the country and while the State is endeavouring to become a corruption-free State, he warned that those involved in acts of corruption will be brought to justice.

He pointed out that it would not be correct to say that the government service was completely free of corruption because of the presence of certain people who are unable to change with time. “Such people are there in all services. We will not tolerate such people in any manner,” the chief minister said.

“Kerala is the least corrupt state in the country. However, we should aim higher to become a corruption-free state. The civil servants who make obstacles to this endeavour will not be tolerated and they will be brought to justice,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister said the fight against the drug mafia is one of the areas where strong actions of the police are needed.

“We have to go ahead with a proper plan of action to fight the drug mafia and defeat it. There should be an effort to make people cooperate in this regard. The fight must be a continuous one,” he said.

Chief Minister Vijayan also praised the State Police cyber team. (ANI)

A state visit to India by the king of Cambodia is taking place after almost six decades, with the last one in 1963.
This visit would mark the 70th anniversary of relations between India and Cambodia established in 1952.

“He would be accompanied by a 27-member high-level delegation including the minister of the Royal Palace, President of the Senate, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and other officials,” Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East), MEA said in a media briefing on Friday.

The last visit to Cambodia by the president of India was that of President Shimati Pratiba Patil in 2010. President Rajendra Prasad visited Cambodia in 1959.

The visit of the King of Cambodia will commence in the morning on 30th May 2023, with the Ceremonial Guard of Honour at the Rajpathi Bhavan. He would then visit Raj Ghat to pay floral tributes, the Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (East) informed in the briefing.

President Droupadi Murmu will host a banquet in honour of the King at Rashpathi Bhavan.

Giving a brief background about India’s relations with Cambodia, Saurabh Kumar said that India and Cambodia relations have their roots in Hindu and Buddhist cultural influences that emanated from India.

“These historical links continue to provide a strong foundation for our contemporary ties. India established diplomatic relations with Cambodia in 1952,” he added.

India was the first democratic country to recognize the new government in Cambodia and reopened its diplomatic mission in 1981. India also played an active and positive role in the finalization of the Paris Peace Accords of 1991 and contributed towards the conduct of the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia or Untak-sponsored elections in 1993.

“This contribution of India is appreciated and remembered in Cambodia even today,” he added.

Further, elaborating on the depth of India-Cambodia relations, Saurabh Kumar said, “The ASEAN and Mekong Ganga Corporation Cambodia hosted the first India ASEAN Summit in 2002 when it held the Chair of RCR in 2022. Again, during the Cambodian Chair of RCN, the ASEAN-India relations were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership.”

“Conservation and restoration of ancient temples in Cambodia by India would be an important part of the conversation. Since 1986, India, through the Archaeological Survey of India, has been engaged in the conservation and restoration of ancient temples in Cambodia. In the late 80s and early 90s, restoration work was carried out on the Angkot Wat. Restoration of Ta Prohm temple has completed two phase phases, while the third phase of work is underway. Last year, restoration work commenced on Prayer Vihar, a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva,” the MEA secretary informed speaking on the restoration works done by India in Cambodia for the ancient temples.

About the defence and demining cooperation with Cambodia, MEA Secretary East said that it includes training courses for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, training in demining and peacekeeping modules providing demining equipment as well as goodwill visits by Indian Navy and Coast Guard ships and exchange of official delegations.

“India has extended a grant of US dollar 1.5 million for the procurement of demining equipment, and gifted sniffer dogs and offered a US dollar 50 million line of credit for capacity building and other related works for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces. Customised training courses for more than 80 Cambodian armed personnel will be held this year in different areas. The first army-to-army staff talks between India and Cambodia were conducted in April 2023,” he added.

“Lieutenant General Hun Manath, who is the commander of the Royal Cambodian Army, visited India in February this year. India and Cambodia trade is around US dollar 320 million with Indian exports of US dollar 198 million and imports from Cambodia at US dollar 122 million. Cumulative investments from India in Cambodia are estimated at US dollar 115 million primarily in pharmaceuticals, two and three-wheelers and some in the area of mining. Cambodia has been supportive of India in international fora it has joined the International Solar Alliance. A delegation from Cambodia recently participated in the launch of the International Big Cat Alliance,” Saurabh Kumar stated.

The visit of His Majesty the King will be important, it will be an opportunity to consolidate and strengthen India-Cambodia relations.

The visit has a strong symbolic value coming as it does on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It would also contribute to our efforts to add greater contempt to our trade, economic, defence, culture, and people-to-people ties.

Speaking on Human resource development and capacity building he said, “India is actively assisting Cambodia in capacity building and human resource development through training slots under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships. More than 2200 Cambodian nationals have been imparted training under the ITEC program since 1981. Over 30 ICCR scholarships are available to Cambodian students on an annual basis,” he said.

“Lines of credit and lines of credit of around US dollars, 100 million have been extended to Cambodia for projects in infrastructure, water resources, and path transmission lines, amongst others. Cambodia has benefited from 48 quick-impact projects targeted toward local communities in areas such as education, health, sanitation, ecotourism, and infrastructure. 31 of these have been completed and 17 of these projects are under implementation,” he stated further. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah

Pretty Damn Impressive: Omar Praises New Parliament Building

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday praised the new Parliament building terming it “pretty damn impressive”.

In a tweet, Omar Abdullah said, “Setting aside the brouhaha about the inauguration for a moment, this building is a welcome addition. The old Parliament House has served us well but as someone who has worked there for a few years, a lot of us often spoke amongst ourselves about the need for a new & improved parliament building. Better late than never is all I’ll say & this one looks pretty damn impressive.”
PM Modi will dedicate the new Parliament building to the country on May 28.

Meanwhile, slamming the opposition parties’ call for boycotting the inauguration of the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several leaders and activists from Jammu and Kashmir on Friday extended support to the inauguration while also describing the opposition’s decision as “childish and trivial”.

Speaking to ANI, socio-political activist Adil Hussain said, “The new parliament building is the temple of democracy. It is a very proud thing for all of us, for all Indians including the Opposition. In the last 70 years, we did not have such leadership. If you see the ratings worldwide, Prime Minister Modi’s rating is 78 whereas US President Joe Bidden’s rating is only 43. The Opposition has expressed issues but we do not think that this is such a big issue. Politics should not happen on this.”

Meanwhile, Ghulam Nabi Azad’s party Democratic Progressive Asad Party (DPAP) spokesperson, Firdous, said, “This is not such a big issue as the Opposition has been portraying. This is simply childish behaviour by the opposition parties. This new Parliament building has a vision. It is a great move by PM Modi to inaugrate the Parliament. An agenda should not be made out of this.”

He said that the inauguration should be welcomed with “open arms” and disrespecting the Prime Minister by boycotting the event is not right.

“As a spokesperson of the party, I believe the inauguration should be welcomed with open arms. After all, he is our Prime Minister. Disrespecting the Prime Minister is not right. We must respect the move. Earlier Prime Ministers including Rajiv Gandhi also inaugurated the building in the Parliament. This is not new,” the DPAP spokesperson added.

Notably, at least 21 opposition parties have decided to boycott the PM’s decision to preside over the inauguration ceremony instead of President Droupadi Murmu.

The opposition said that the inauguration of the building without President Droupadi Murmu “insults the high office of the President, and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution”.

Meanwhile, amid the boycott call by the opposition, the Centre has received a confirmed list of 25 political parties, including some which are not a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), that will participate in the inauguration ceremony.

Apart from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), several parties in the NDA including AIADMK, Apna Dal, the Republican Party of India, the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, NPP, and NPF have confirmed their attendance for the function on Sunday.

Several neutral parties, including Biju Janata Dal, TDP, and YSRCP will also be present for the inauguration.

Amongst the opposition parties, Shiromani Akali Dal and Bahujan Samajwadi Party and JDS will attend the function on Sunday. (ANI)

Australian Politicians Jealous Of Modi: Aussie Leader Of Oppo

Australian leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton said on Thursday that the politicians of Australia are jealous of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that they are jealous because none of them is able to gather 20,000 people and make them chant their surnames.

While addressing the Parliament, LoP Dutton said that an extraordinary event happened on Wednesday.
“There were lots of people in attendance from both sides of politics, but I said to the Prime Minister this morning that every politician there last night was jealous of the fact that he was able to get 20,000 people chanting his surname in unison on the other side of the world, mainly at Labour Party functions,” he said while speaking at the Parliament.

“I thought it was an extraordinary event and I really acknowledge the work of the Indian community in hosting Prime Minister Modi,” he added.

He said that he joined with the (Australian) Prime Minister in thanking Prime Minister Modi and his delegation for visiting Australia for paying honour to the relationship.

Speaking on the relationship with India, he said that it was “quite extraordinary and productive” when his government was in power.

He also acknowledged the work of former Prime Minister Morrison and many on the front bench, including Dan Teen, who was intimately involved in trade negotiations and created the opportunities which, to governance credit, they’ve continued in relation to a number of these announcements.

“I’d been meeting with Prime Minister Modi in Sydney this morning (Thursday). It was a very cordial and engaging discussion and the wide-ranging topics that we traversed gave an indication of the bipartisan support in the relationship,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a key address to the Indian diaspora at a community event during his Sydney visit, highlighting “Mutual Trust and Mutual Respect” are the foundation of the close historical ties between India and Australia.

Noting that bilateral ties between India and Australia were earlier seen to be defined by 3Cs- Commonwealth, Cricket and Curry- and then by ‘Democracy, Diaspora and Dosti’ and later ‘Energy, Economy and Education’ emerged as a key component, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he believes the relationship is “beyond this” and “it is mutual trust and mutual respect”.

Addressing a community event in Sydney on the second day of his visit to Australia, PM Modi credited the Indian diaspora in Australia as being a force behind mutual respect and trust between the two countries.

PM Modi also held meetings with business leaders of top Australian companies in Sydney on Tuesday, During the meetings, he called for enhancing cooperation with the Indian industry in areas such as technology, skilling, and clean energy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emplaned for India from Australia at the conclusion of his three-nation tour during which he also visited Japan and Papua New Guinea.

“A successful three nation tour concludes! PM @narendramodi emplanes for Delhi following a three nation visit to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia, fostering stronger linkages with partner countries,” Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a tweet.

PM Modi visited Australia in the last leg of his three-nation visit. He held a meeting with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese on Wednesday.

PM Modi used “cricket diplomacy” to explain the deepening ties between India and Australia, and said, “Our ties have entered the T20 mode!”

“I am visiting Australia within two months of the visit of my friend Prime Minister Albanese to India. This is our sixth meeting in the last one year. This reflects the depth of our comprehensive relations, convergence in our views and maturity of our ties. In the language of cricket, our ties have entered the T20 mode,” PM Modi said in a joint press briefing with Anthony Albanese.

“I invite PM Anthony Albanese and all Australian cricket fans to India for the Cricket World Cup this year. At that time, you will also get to see the grand Diwali celebration in India,” he added.

PM Modi said that he and Albanese discussed the issue of attacks on temples in Australia.”PM Anthony Albanese and I have in the past discussed the issue of attack on temples in Australia and activities of separatist elements. We discussed the matter today also. We will not accept any elements that harm the friendly and warm ties between the India-Australia relationship by their action or thoughts. PM Albanese assured me once again today that he will take strict actions against such elements in the future also,” PM Modi said.

In his remarks, Anthony Albanese said Australia is a better place because of the contributions of the Indian-Australian community.

“In my first year as Prime Minister, I met PM Modi six times, which underscores the value we place on deepening ties between our nations. Australia is a better place because of the contributions of the Indian-Australian community, and we want to see more connections between our countries” he said.

PM Modi had on Tuesday addressed a community event in Sydney. (ANI)
