Killing Of IAF Personnel In 1990: Eyewitnesses Identify Yasin Malik As Shooter

Senior Public Prosecutor for the CBI, Monika Kohli, on Friday said eyewitnesses have identified Yasin Malik, chief of the banned outfit Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), as the shooter in the killing of four Indian Air Force personnel in 1990.

“In the special TADA court, a hearing took place on January 18 regarding the killing of the IAF personnel. The CBI had summoned two witnesses. The witnesses narrated how the incident took place. The witnesses identified Yasin Malik and told the court that he was the one to have opened fire (at the IAF personnel),” Kohli told ANI.

“The witness also informed the court that Malik was also injured in the firing and received four bullet injuries,” she added.

She added that the next date of hearing in the matter has been scheduled for February 15 and 16.

On January 25, 1990, four IAF employees, including Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna, were killed by JKLF militants.

Malik, who is serving life imprisonment in Tihar Jail in a terror funding case, was charge-sheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation before the TADA court in Jammu on August 31, 1990, in connection with the case.

Yasin Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment twice.

Nirmal Khanna, the wife of Squadron Leader Khanna, has been fighting for justice for her late husband.

In March 2020, a TADA court observed that there are “sufficient grounds for drawing presumption that the accused Yasin Malik” and others “prima facie have committed” the offence of killing Indian Air Force (IAF) officer Squadron Leader Ravi Khanna and three others. (ANI)

Modi Gets Emotional As PMAY-Urban Housing Scheme Inaugurated In Solapur

In a heartfelt moment during the inaugural address of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-Urban) scheme in Solapur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi got emotional as he talked about the housing scheme in Maharashtra.

“Today the country’s largest society is built under PM Awas Yojana has been inaugurated. It was my promise in 2014 and coming back to see it is a fulfilling moment and I thought, I wish I too had gotten a chance to live in such a house in my childhood,” PM Modi shared in his inaugural address.

The beneficiaries of the housing scheme include handloom workers, vendors, power loom workers, rag pickers, bidi workers, and drivers, among others.

“I am happy that the pledge we had taken for the thousands of poor and labourers of Solapur is being fulfilled today. The day I came here to lay the foundation stone of this project, I had given you the guarantee that I would soon come to give the keys to your houses,” the Prime Minister added.

“Today, Modi has fulfilled this guarantee. Remember, Modi’s Guarantee means ‘Guarantee Ke Poora Hone Ki Guarantee’!” he added.

He emphasized the government’s dedication to the welfare of the poor and the implementation of schemes to make their lives easier.

PM Modi highlighted the challenges faced by the poor under previous governments and reiterated his commitment to a government dedicated to the welfare of the poor since 2014.

“Our government, following the ideals of Prabhu Shree Ram, has been ensuring that good governance and honesty exist in the country,” the Prime Minister said.

“For a long time, slogans of ‘Garibi Hatao’ were raised in the country. But despite these slogans poverty was not eliminated. Schemes were made in the name of the poor, but the poor did not get their benefits,” he said.

“The middlemen used to loot their rightful money. The policies, intentions and loyalty of the earlier governments were in the dock,” he added.

During the address, the Prime Minister inaugurated 7 Amrit Projects worth Rs. 2,000 crore across different cities in Maharashtra, extending congratulations to the people of the state on this special occasion.

AMRUT 2.0 is designed to provide universal coverage of water supply through functional taps to all households in all the statutory towns in the country and coverage of sewerage/septage management.

In line with the government’s philosophy, PM Modi emphasized the dignity of labour, self-reliance, and the welfare of the poor.

“As soon as the government was formed in 2014, I had said, ‘My government is a government dedicated to the poor.’ Therefore, we implemented such schemes one after the other, which would reduce the difficulties of the poor and make their lives easier,” he said.

“Prabhu Shree Ram has been the greatest inspiration for us to remain dedicated and committed. It is Ramrajya which has inspired everyone’s support, everyone’s development, everyone’s faith and everyone’s efforts,” he added.

PM Modi concluded with anticipation for the historic consecration of Ram Lalla, expressing devotion during this special time ahead of the grand ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya.

The Prime Minister shared the significance of the moment and the end of the decade-long practice of having darshan in a tent.

“I am now busy with my Yama Niyamas under the guidance of some saints and I am following them strictly before the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ of Ram Lalla. It is also a coincidence that my ritual started from the land of Panchavati from Nashik in Maharashtra,” PM Modi said.

“This time is full of devotion for all of us. That historic moment is going to come on January 22, when Lord Ram is going to sit in his grand temple. The decades-old pain of having darshan of our idol in a tent is now going to go away,” he added.

During the programme, the Prime Minister dedicated more than 90,000 houses completed under PMAY-Urban in Maharashtra and 15,000 houses to Raynagar Housing Society in Solapur.

Further, the Prime Minister kickstarted the distribution of 1st and 2nd instalments to 10,000 beneficiaries of PM-SVANIDHI in Maharashtra during the programme. (ANI)

Sameer Sharma

‘We Cannot Normalise Violence and Gore on Screen’

Sameer Sharma, a medical professional, delves into the patriarchal mindset of the audiences that make films like Animal, Salaar and KGF a roaring success. His views:

Patriarchy is not alien to our society, never has been. We have all witnessed it manifest in various forms during our formative years. Male chauvinism has its cultural roots in our society since eons and we have seen its unfettered acceptance from one generation to the other.

Similarly, our mainstream media is not far behind in inherently portraying this vice in daily soaps on television, commercials of consumer goods as well as cinema. The naked display of violence, misogyny, profanity and male chauvinism in our movies has been taken to another level in some of the most recent Bollywood releases like ‘Animal’, ‘Salaar’ and ‘KGF’ to name a few. The passion with which people have accepted and appreciated this brute display of bestiality is reflective of our society which takes pride in being violent, impatient and contemptuous.

These kind of movies create an adverse effect on impressionable minds, especially our youth. The younger generation often get inspired by what they see in movies and on OTT platforms. They try to emulate various characters shown in the movie and somewhere lose their own identity in the process. The negative influence is far greater than one can imagine. In some cases, these young individuals resort to serious crimes where women are involved and some heinous instances are quoted as being taken from a film that perpetrated and glorified such violence. The hero is worshipped no matter what. He is emulated and the common man is struck by the belief that the screen hero is a demi god and does everything right. The false belief and warped notions on behaviour with women result in a convoluted society.

Today, everyone has access to all kinds of stuff especially films. It is easy courtesy access to a mobile phone, a tablet, a laptop and a high speed internet connection which is readily available everywhere. Violence against women and children has increased manifold in the recent years and it’ll be fair to say that the kind of media content our youth is consuming create an adverse effect on their mind which often result in such incidences. The lackadaisical attitude of our society to address this issue is bewildering to say the least. We have knowingly or unknowingly normalized violence, misogyny, narcissism and indifference which is pushing our youth towards a sort of psychotic and insane behaviour with a criminal and devilish mindset. And that is precisely what these films glorify. When we convey and portray evil, we harvest evil. What you see, imbibe and take in, makes you what you are.

There is always a silver lining to every black cloud. The hope to see enlightened individuals admonish this archaic behaviour is not distant. There is a need to address this vile obsession to treat women and the underprivileged with contempt. As long as we condone what’s happening now within our society, we will never be able to address the elephant in the room. Change is imminent.

Mahua Moitra

Mahua’s Office: Bungalow Vacated Before 10 AM

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra’s office informed reporters that the government bungalow occupied by the TMC leader in the national capital, was vacated by 10 am on Friday before the ‘authorities’ arrived and ‘no eviction’ took place.

“House number 9B Telegraph Lane occupied by Mahua Moitra, was fully vacated by 10 am this morning (January 19, 2024) and the possession was handed over by her lawyers to the Directorate of Estates, who are inspecting and engaged in due process. Premises were vacated before authorities arrived and no eviction took place at all,” Moitra’s office said in a statement to ANI.

Earlier, on Thursday, the Delhi High Court refused to grant relief to the TMC leader and denied her stay on the operation of eviction of the government bungalow.

Moitra challenged the eviction order and sought a stay.

The high court noted that her eviction was not stayed by the Supreme Court. Justice Girish Kathpaliya dismissed the interim application seeking a stay of operation of the eviction order of January 16, 2024.

Dismissing her application the high court stated, “In view of the pendency of the issue of expulsion of petitioner before the Supreme Court and the issue of extension of time to vacate the government accommodation being inextricably linked with that, coupled with the fact that as on date petitioner has no right.”

“This court is not inclined to invoke jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution of India to restrain the operation of the impugned eviction order. Accordingly, the application stands dismissed,” the HC stated in its order.

“The petitioner having been allotted the government accommodation incidental to her status as a Member of Parliament and that status having ceased upon her expulsion, which expulsion has not been stayed by the Supreme Court despite hearing afforded to her, presently she has no right to continue in the said government accommodation and accordingly, under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, she cannot be granted protection as sought,” Justice Kathpaliya said in the order pronounced on Thursday.

The court stated further that the allotment of government accommodation to the ‘petitioner’ was a co-terminus with her status, which has come to an end upon her expulsion as a member of the Lower House of Parliament.

The court pointed out that no specific rule had been brought before the court pertaining to the eviction of MPs from the government accommodation after they cease to be members.

The petitioner sought retention of her government accommodation on the ground that her expulsion as a Member of Parliament was “contrary to law and the procedure laid down by Section 3B of the Act was not followed and despite the respondent no. 1 (Estate officer) having deferred the decision till resolution of representation of the petitioner by authorities the eviction order was passed”.

It was also submitted that in view of her medical condition and the difficulties she would face during campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, she deserves an extension of time to vacate the government bungalow allotted to her. (ANI)

Vadodara

Vadodara Boat Capsize: Manager, Staff Of Boating Firm Among 18 Booked For Negligence

A day after 14 lives were lost and several injured in a boat capsize in Vadodara, an FIR was filed against 18 persons in connection with the incident, the police said on Friday.

According to Harni police, among the 18 booked for negligence were the manager and employees of Kotia Project, the private firm handling the boating in the Harni legzone.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the boat was packed beyond capacity, the police informed.

A total of 27 people were onboard the boat during the accident, the police said, adding that it had a capacity to seat 14.

The FIR alleged further that the passengers were not given life jackets and neither were they given a run-through on the safety guidelines.

The victims belonged to a group of 80 that included children and teachers from New Sunrise School in Waghodia, the police said, adding that they had arrived for a school picnic on January 18.

The 12 deceased children included seven girls and five boys. They were identified as Roshni Pankajbhai Shinde (10), Rutwi Pratik Shah (10), Jahabiya Mohammad Yunus Subedar (10), Sakina Sokat Abdulrasur (9), Alisabanu Mahamad Umar Kothariwala (9), Muvavza Mohamed Mahir Sheikh (8), Nancy Rahul Mali (8), Asiya Faruk Khalifa (11), Mohammad Ayan Mohammad Anis Gandhi (13), Vishv Kumar Kalpeshbhai Nizama (10), Altaf Hussain Mansoori (9), Ryan Harun Khalifa (10) and Farooq Khalifa (10).

Also among the deceased were two teachers identified as Falguniben Manishbhai Patel (52) and Chhayaben Hitendrabhai Surti (56).

The Opposition demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident, alleging negligence.

Raising allegations against Vadodara Municipal Corporation, Leader of Opposition in Gujarat assembly, Ami Rawat, questioned the allotment of the boating contract to a private firm.

“This was an act of murder, not an accident. We demand a probe into this incident by a sitting judge. It is a sheer act of negligence,” Rawat said.

“No life jackets or lifeguards were in the boat at the time of the incident. Criminal proceedings should be initiated against those found responsible. In 2016, when this project was allotted to contractors, we had objected to it,” she added.

On Thursday evening, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel met the injured victims at the hospital in Vadodara.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, earlier, condoled the loss of lives in the incident and also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.

The Gujarat government also announced Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

President Droupadi Murmu, too, mourned the lives lost in the incident. “The news of the death of children and teachers in a boat accident in Vadodara, Gujarat is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and wish for the success of the rescue operation,” President Murmu posted from her official X handle. (ANI)

Pakistan US

US Ducks Questions On Reports Pak Consulted Washington Before Striking Back At Iran

The US on Thursday (local time) evaded a question on whether Pakistan held prior consultations with Washington before conducting retaliatory air strikes on Iran.

On media reports claiming Pakistan consulted the US before conducting strikes in Iran, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, during a regular press briefing in Washington, said, “I do not have any private conversations to read out.”

Miller said the US is concerned about the escalating tensions in the region and has urged restraint on all sides.

He said there is no need for escalation in the matter and that the country has noted the Pakistani government’s comments about the importance of “cooperative relations between Pakistan and its neighbours.

In response to a question on how the US administration reads the situation between Iran and Pakistan, Miller said, “We are concerned about escalating tensions in the region. It’s been something we have spoken a number of times, we’ve focused on. We’ve been incredibly concerned about the potential for escalation since October 7.”

“That’s why we have engaged in intense diplomatic efforts to try to prevent escalation. We noted the comments from the government of Pakistan, about the importance of cooperative relations between Pakistan and its neighbours. We thought those were productive useful statements, and certainly, there’s no need for escalation and we would urge restraint on all sides in this case,” he added.

Matthew Miller called Iran a major funder of Hezbollah and a principal supporter of Hamas for years.

In another query about the ongoing tensions between Iran and Pakistan after strikes and counterstrikes, Miller said, “I think I made pretty clear yesterday what we think about Iran’s attacks, not just the strikes that were launched in the past three days against three of its neighbours but its long history of funding terrorism, funding instability and sowing discord in the Middle East. That’s something we have seen contribute to conflict in Gaza.”

Iran’s strikes in Pakistan came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missiles into Iraq’s Kurdistan region at what it called an Israeli “spy headquarters” and at alleged ISIS-linked targets in Syria, Al Arabiya News reported.

In response, Pakistan on Thursday launched missile strikes into Iran and codenamed it operation ‘Marg Bar Sarmachar’.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in a statement said it had undertaken a series of “highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts” in the Siestan-o-Baluchistan province of Iran.

“A number of terrorists were killed during the intelligence-based operation codenamed “Marg Bar Sarmachar,” it said.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Miller said: “You have seen Iran as the principal supporter of Hamas for years. They are the major funder of Hezbollah. They are one of the major funders of the Houthis. We have seen the consequences of the actions that Iran has taken to add to regional instability and that’s why we continue to take actions to hold Iran accountable and also send clear very messages to Iran that we don’t believe this should escalate in any way, shape or form.”

“Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally of the United States, and that will remain the case, but we would urge restraint in this case. We do not want to see escalation and don’t think there’s a need for escalation,” he added.

US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the White House, John Kirby, said the US is monitoring the situation regarding Iran and Pakistan “very very closely” and they do not want to see escalation. (ANI)
