Kashmir Valley cold

Kashmir: Mercury Dips Several Notches Below Freezing Point

Kashmir Valley witnessed a bone-chilling first day of the New Year as the minimum temperature dropped several degrees below freezing point in many areas on Monday.

The minimum temperature in the summer capital of Srinagar dropped to minus 5.2 degrees Celsius in the morning, a weather official said.

As Kashmir grapples with the extreme cold, the impact on daily life and infrastructure is palpable.

The freezing temperatures have made daily activities a challenge for residents.

“The temperature in Jammu and Kashmir was minus 5.4 at night. Wherever we pour water it freezes. People are coming in large numbers to enjoy the weather. Yesterday, there was a big celebration in front of Lal Chowk. We pray that if there is snowfall then the cold will subside a little because our children and elders have fallen ill,” a local in Srinagar told ANI.

Dal Lake and other water bodies which attract tourists and locals for rides have frozen.

Fog has made visibility extremely poor on the road during the morning

However, tourists are enjoying the weather.

“We reached here only last night. In the morning we see that a thin layer of snow has accumulated. The way the weather is, we think we will enjoy it a lot,” a tourist from Jaipur said.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted the same weather for the Union Territory for the whole week with minimum temperature likely to hover between minus 1 and 8 degrees Celsius. (ANI)

Delhi NCR Cold

Delhi: Mercury At 9°C On Chilly New Year’s Morning

It was a bitterly cold New Year’s morning in the national capital, as people woke up to a cold wave and dense fog on a unusually lazy Monday.

With the minimum temperature in the Capital recorded at 9°C, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the locals called on the administration to make necessary arrangements for the needy or those sheltered at night shelters.

With the mercury going into a free-fall, locals out in the cold were seen huddling around bonfires, taking much-needed warmth from the leaping, crackling flames.

Speaking to ANI on Monday, residents, out and about and running errands in the early hours, urged the government and the authorities concerned to arrange more shelters for people on the streets and the destitute to spend nights in the prevailing biting cold.

“People living on sidewalks are bearing the brunt of the prevailing cold wave in the national capital. One has to travel a lot in the cold to reach the night shelters in the city. They are situated at a significant distance from each other. Not many can go there in this cold,” a resident told ANI on Monday.

“We had a lot of trouble spending the night in this cold. We collected some litter on the streets to light a bonfire. This bone-chilling winter has only added to our everyday woes,” another man on the street told ANI.

The IMD, meanwhile, put out a warning for ‘dense fog’ in the national capital in the first week of 2024, with the minimum temperature likely to hover between 8 and 9° Celsius.

“The fog layer (encircled patch) over Punjab, north Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northwest Madhya Pradesh, south Uttarkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is visible in a satellite picture at 06:15 am of January 1,” read a post on the official IMD handle on X.

According to the IMD, a ‘very dense’ fog is declared when visibility is between 0 and 50 metres, while it is ‘dense’ when the visibility is between 51 and 200 metres.

Further, the fog is considered ‘moderate’ when the visibility is between 201 and 500 metres ‘moderate’, and ‘shallow’ between 501 and 1,000 metres.

Meanwhile, with dense fog shrouding the entire North Indian belt, several trains to Delhi were delayed owing to reduced visibility on New Year’s morning.

Many trains en route to Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin, and New Delhi stations were delayed by 4 hours, according to the Railways.

“A thick fog is prevailing in Varanasi because of which my train is running late. There’s been plenty of fog across North India over the last 3 to 4 days because of which several trains are running behind schedule. Otherwise, my train is seldom late,” a passenger told ANI.

Earlier, on the last day of 2023, the minimum temperature at the Safdarjung Observatory, the city’s primary weather station, was recorded at 11°C. (ANI)

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) 2024

Dhami Chairs High-Level Meet Over New Land Laws

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday held a high-level meeting over land law at his official residence in the state capital. Dehradun.

According to sources, the CM directed officials that a large-scale public hearing should be held by the committee tasked with drafting the new land law, and opinions and suggestions from the public and experts across diverse fields should be actively sought and incorporated.

The CM added that Garhwal and Kumaon commissioners should also be included in the decentralised system for land law.

Further, on the instructions of the chief minister, it was decided that in the interest of the state and the public, till the submission of the report of the Land Law Committee or further orders, district magistrates will not allow the proposal of permission to persons outside Uttarakhand to purchase land for agriculture and horticulture purposes.

Even earlier, CM Dhami had given instructions to purchase land only after background verification of the buyer.

According to an amendment to the existing land laws in 2004, under Section 154 of the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari and Land System Act 1950, persons who are not holders of immovable property in Uttarakhand before September 12, 2003, are allowed to purchase land for agriculture and horticulture from the district officer concerned.

There is also a provision for granting permission by the state government.

A drafting committee has since been constituted by the state government to come up with new land laws for Uttarakhand.

During the meeting, CM Dhami directed that the draft be prepared expeditiously by the committee after taking on board suggestions from experts and people from a wide spectrum of arenas or fields.

He said all decisions by the government were being taken in the interest of the people.

He added that the government was working continuously in this direction, considering the sentiments of the public. (ANI)

Aditya-L1 Set To Reach Its Destination On Jan 6: ISRO Chief

India’s maiden solar mission — Aditya-L1 – launched on September 2, is set for its final manoeuvre to reach its intended destination L1 point on January 6, ISRO Chairman S Somanath told ANI on Monday.

“Aditya-L1 is going to reach its L1 point on January 6 and we are going to do the final manoeuvre to keep it there,” the ISRO chief said, on the sidelines of the successful launch of XPoSat mission to study black holes.

So far in its journey, the spacecraft has undergone four earth-bound manoeuvres and a Trans-Lagrangean Point 1 Insertion (TL1I) manoeuvres, all successfully

Addressing reporters on the very first day of 2024, Somanath said ISRO has about 12-14 missions in pipeline this year.

“Only in 12 months (in 2024), we have to have a minimum of 12 missions on our target. It may exceed depending upon our ability to produce hardware, complete the testing and if things go well. If it is not going well, there could be an impact. Otherwise, we are getting ready for at least 12-14 missions,” he said, without getting into much of the specifics.

About the Gaganyaan mission, he said at least two more abort missions would be done, one unmanned mission though target to do two, parachutes drop tests, and 100s of valuation tests would be conducted before the actual launch in 2025.

“2024 is going to be the year for Gaganyaan readiness…Along with that, we will have a helicopter-based drop test to prove the parachute systems; there will be multiple drop tests. We also will have many hundreds of valuation tests. So it is going to be a Gaganyaan year,” ISRO chief added.

Meanwhile, earlier today, the X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) to study X-ray emission from various celestial sources was launched successfully, and its lift-off was normal.

Addressing the scientists after the successful launch of the mission, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief S Somanath said the PSLV-C58 vehicle placed the satellite precisely into the intended orbit of 650 km, with a 6-degree inclination.

“From this point, the orbit of the PSLV will be reduced to a lower orbit, where the upper stage of the PSLV which is now described as POEM will carry out experiments with nine of the onboard payloads and that will take some time,” Somanath added.

It is India’s first observation of black holes, though other countries have done such studies earlier.

Somanath said it took 7 years to build this satellite.

“We want to create at least 100 scientists who can understand this aspect and contribute to the knowledge of black holes to the world,” he added.

In a stellar display of prowess, India soared to new heights in 2023 with the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the south pole of the moon and the launch of Aditya-L1, India’s first solar mission.

These milestones not only secured India’s standing in the global space economy but also fueled the engines for the private space sector in India.

Among other feats India now aims for are the Gaganyaan Mission in 2024-2025, setting up ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ by 2035, and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040. (ANI)
