Pakistani and Iranian crew

Determined To Help Anybody Who’s In Distress: Navy Chief

After the Pakistani and Iranian crew expressed gratitude towards the Indian Navy for saving them from Somali pirates, Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar on Sunday emphasised that they are determined to help anybody who’s in distress, adding that they need to ensure that region is safe, secure, free and open.

The navy chief further told ANI that in the process, they realized that there were some fishing vessels with different nationalities, like Iranians, and Pakistani crew were getting hijacked by the Somali pirates, and they were being used thereafter to carry out piracy attacks on other bigger ships.

He added that the Indian navy made the pirates surrender their weapons and “release the crew of these three vessels.”

“So that is why you find them thanking us…It’s our job to ensure that anybody who’s in distress, we are determined to help them and ensure that this region is safe, secure, free and open,” he said.

Moreover, warning shots were fired by the Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra during the anti-piracy mission, according to the Indian Navy.

The Navy chief further highlighted that currently, the Indian Navy is undertaking two major operations; anti-piracy operation and anti-drone operation.

“One is the anti-piracy operation other is the anti-drone operation,” he said.

He further explained that in anti-drone operation, they are not just supporting the Indian flag merchant vessel, but also any of the other flag vessels who are in distress.

“In anti-drone operation, we are supporting our merchant ships, not just the Indian flag merchant vessel, but also any of the other flag vessels who are in distress, whether it’s fire or attacked by some drone or missile,” he said.

Additionally, he said that they also try to assist them in getting to the harbour safely.

“If there’s damage, we have been trying to help them and assist them to get to the harbour safely,” he added.

Highlighting the second operation, the anti-piracy operation, the navy chief said that they thought that piracy had almost finished but they saw a resurgence when the tensions started in shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

“The second operation, which is ongoing, is the anti-piracy operation. We have deployed more than 108 ships since 2008, continuously…We thought that piracy had almost finished because hardly any piracy attacks in 2023…But then suddenly when the drone attack started and the disturbance in the shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. We suddenly saw a resurgence in this,” he said.

The Navy chief Hari Kumar then stressed that the Indian Navy is determined to ensure that this piracy will be completely minimised.

“Towards that, we have been aggressively pursuing our mission. We have deployed about four ships there. So every single fishing boat or vessel that is suspected is being boarded and we are checking for piracy triggers…,” he added.

The Indian Navy warship INS Sumitra thwarted the piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, Al Naeemi sailing off the East Coast of Somalia and successfully rescued 19 Pakistani nationals on Monday, the Indian Navy said in an official statement.

On January 28, the warship on PM 28 Jan 2024 responded to a distress message regarding the hijacking of an Iranian-flagged Fishing Vessel (FV) Iman, which had been boarded by pirates and the crew taken as hostages.

The FV was intercepted by INS Sumitra and following the SOPs and coercive posturing the vessel and 17 Iranian crew were safely rescued in the early hours of January 29. FiV Iman was sanitised and released for onward transit.

Subsequently, INS Sumitra located and intercepted another Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Al Naeemi, which had been boarded by pirates and her Crew (19 Pakistani Nationals) taken hostage.

On January 29, INS Sumitra intercepted the fishing vessel 29 Jan 2024 and through coercive posturing and deployment of her integral helo and boats compelled the safe release of the crew and the vessel. The ship also undertook confirmatory boarding to sanitise and check on the well-being of the crew who were held captive by the Somali pirates. (ANI)

At Tea on Day 4, England are struggling at 18/2 as team still needs 359 runs to win the Rajkot Test.

India resumed the second session of day four from 314/4 with Yashasvi Jaiswal (149) and Sarfaraz Khan (22) on the crease. The hosts continue to dominate the game with a lead of 440 runs.

Both the batters completed their hundred-run partnership in just 88 balls as Sarfaraz slammed a boundary of the first ball of the 87th over which was bowled by experienced seamer James Anderson.

The right-hand debutant completed his second consecutive fifty as he smashed a boundary on the fourth ball of the 96th over which was bowled by leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed.

Jaiswal brought up his second double ton in red-ball cricket in the first ball of the next over (97th over) as he took a single off Anderson’s bowling.

India declared their second innings after scoring 430 runs with the loss of four wickets and set a mammoth total of 557 runs to chase for the visitors in order to take a lead in the ongoing five-match series.

Jaiswal and Sarfaraz finished their innings at unbeaten 214* runs laced by 14 fours and 10 sixes and 68* runs with the help of six boundaries and three sixes respectively. Both the batters build an unbeaten partnership of 172 runs.

Openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawly came to the crease to chase a huge total. The Three Lions didn’t have a start that the side wanted as they lost the wicket of Duckett through a runout in the seventh over.

Just before Tea, in the eighth over the visitors lost their second second wicket as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Crawly after scoring just 11 runs.

The fourth day started with India standing at 196/2, with Gill (65) and Kuldeep Yadav (3) unbeaten on the crease.

As the first session continued Gill and Kuldeep built a strong partnership. The 24-year-old India opener smashed 9 fours and 2 sixes during his time on the crease. However, Gill was unlucky to miss his second century of the ongoing series for just nine runs. He was run out for 91 runs in the 64th over by a joint effort from Ben Stokes and Tom Hartley.

After Gill’s wicket, Jaiswal came back on the pitch and now stands at 149*. Earlier on day three, Jaiswal was retired hurt after sustaining an injury.

The second wicket of the day came after English spinner Rehan Ahmed dismissed Kuldeep for 27 runs. Kuldeep resisted 91 balls after being the nightwatchman but fell short infront infront of the English spin attack.

After Kuldeep’s dismissal, Sarfaraz came on the field. Soon after coming, the 26-year-old started hitting as he smashed 2 fours and 1 overhead boundary.

Jaiswal and Sarfaraz have already built a 56-run partnership after facing 6 balls. The hosts continue to get an upper hand on the Rajkot Test as in the last 10 overs of the first session on day four, India scored 56 runs, meanwhile, England failed to bag a wicket.

Brief Score: England 319 & 18/2 (Zak Crawly 11, Ben Duckett 4, Jasprit Bumrah 1/8) vs India 445 & 430/4 decl. (Yashasvi Jaiswal 214*, Shubman Gill 91, Tom Hartley 1/78). (ANI)

Bharatiya Janata Party's National Convention

Second Political Resolution Takes Swipe At INDIA Bloc

On the second day of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s National Convention being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday proposed a second political resolution named “‘
BJP’ Desh Ki Aasha, Vipaksh Ki Hatasha
“, mainly focused on the opposition’s INDIA bloc.

The political resolution was presented by Amit Shah, and it was seconded by Union Minister Arjun Munda.

In the seven-page political proposal, the BJP has alleged that Congress is the mother of instability; Congress is synonymous with bitterness, cunningness, and strategy, strange combination of the INDIA bloc, anti-poor Congress; Congress immersed in corruption; the divisive politics of Congress; attacks on Indian culture; and opposition of every progressive step by Congress.

Congress’s insult to the country’s constitutional institutions and scientists, Congress’s immature and irresponsible politics, and the politics of violence and anarchy by INDIA bloc ensure the downfall of Congress.

“Congress and most of its allies included in the INDIA bloc have been united in the politics of anarchy and violence in the country. Recently, shocking incidents have come to light in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. The TMC has been continuously trying to suppress the voice of the public by targeting BJP workers in West Bengal. There have been many incidents of murder and violence against BJP workers by the CPI, CPM, and their allies in Kerala,” the resolution read.

The country still remembers the kind of jungle rule established by Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar. Tribal women, farmers, and common people have had to endure many types of harassment and torture wherever they are in the country. In the name of movement, efforts are made by divisive elements to create an environment of anarchy.

“Wherever, in the name of movement, efforts are made to create an environment of anarchy by divisive elements in the country, Congress and its allies reach there first to add fuel to the fire. We pledge to continue our struggle against this type of negative politics,” it said.

“It was formed only to oppose Prime Minister Narendra Modi; hence, the alliance has no theoretical or ideological basis. The various parties involved in it contest elections against each other, and in many states, they oppose each other. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party contests against Congress, while in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress and Congress party contest against each other,” it added.

There is ideological similarity between them. Priyanka’s programme has some goals; only to stop Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (ANI)

Why Are Indian Farmers Protesting Again

The Anatomy of an Agitation: Why Are Indian Farmers Protesting Again?

The irony is dark. It has been barely two years since Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Kisan Drone Scheme in India. In the beginning, the scheme, which assists farmers to deploy drones for spraying fertilisers, nutrients and pesticides more efficiently on their farmlands, was launched in 100 places across the country, and later, expanded to more areas. Last week, however, drones were deployed against farmers for an altogether different purpose. They were used to bombard them with tear gas as thousands of farmers converged upon Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) in what is seen as a reprisal of the protests in 2020 and 2021 against the government’s policies.

Back then, in what became one of the biggest and longest mass movements in India’s history, hundreds of thousands of farmers, mainly from the agrarian states of Punjab and Haryana, had agitated for around a year against three new farm laws of the government. That movement had coincided with one of the worst phases of Covid that had hit India and it was a period of tumult. In the end, the Modi government had to repeal the three laws and accede to the farmers’ demands.

What then is the fresh wave of agitation all about? To understand that we need some recapitulation.

The farm laws and why they were repealed

The three laws that were passed in 2021 and then repealed after the protests were aimed at first, giving farmers more freedom to sell their produce outside the regulated markets or mandis; second, they enabled contract farming when farmers and buyers could pre-agree on pricing and other terms; and third, they relaxed the restrictions on storage and movement of some farm commodities such as cereals, pulses, oilseed, onions, and potatoes.

The laws led to massive agitations and clashes with the government’s security forces and police. Farmer leaders said over 700 people died during the year-long protests but the government did not confirm any deaths. The farmers opposed these laws because they feared that they would lose the protection of the government’s minimum support price (MSP) system, which guarantees a fixed price for certain crops, and that they would be exploited by big corporations. They demanded that the government repeal the laws, withdraw the criminal cases against the protesters, provide compensation to the families of the farmers who died during the protest, and ensure a legal guarantee for MSP. They also had other demands, such as pensions, debt waivers, and stricter regulation of fake seeds, pesticides, and fertilisers.

In December 2021, Prime Minister Modi announced the repeal of the laws after which the farmers temporarily suspended their protests. Why then has the agitation begun afresh and what are the issues this time round?

What do farmers want now?

Last week farmers renewed their protests as hundreds of them, mainly from the two northern states, Punjab and Haryana, marched towards the capital and the NCR. The timing of the protest was significant as it came only a few months before parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held and in which the Modi regime that is completing its second term is keen to win a third.

This time the authorities were more prepared as they barricaded the capital and adjoining areas. Delhi and the urban sprawl that makes up the NCR has an urban population of around 30 million people and the farmers’ march can drastically disrupt the functioning of the area. This time local and central police had ramped up their efforts to stop that from happening by barricading highways, pouring concrete and stacking shipping containers to halt the advancing tractors and masses of protesters.

At the core of the provocation for the renewed protests is the farmers’ demand for a guaranteed implementation of the minimum support price (MSP) for all crops so that they get what they consider fair prices and protect them from exploitation by private companies. The repealed farm bills were aimed at increasing market access and competition, but farmers had feared they would weaken existing structures and leave them vulnerable to corporate control.

About 58% of Indians depend on farming for their livelihood and as much as 68.8% of them live in the rural areas. Considering India’s estimated population of 1.4 billion, those translate into huge numbers. Many farmers are burdened by debt and demand loan waivers to alleviate their financial hardships. They also think that rising costs of fertilisers, pesticides and other inputs put further pressure on their livelihoods.

Among their list of demands is also a call for repealing the electricity amendment bill, which was enacted in 2022, to change electricity distribution rules. Farmers fear that it will increase their costs and further increase their dependence on private companies.

Government’s view on farmers’ demands

To begin with, although the three farm laws have been repealed, the Indian government still maintains that they were beneficial for farmers and were needed to modernise the farm sector. The contribution of agriculture in GDP of India is 18.3% as per the second advance estimates of national income for 2022-23. This share has been declining over the years as the economy diversifies and grows.

However, the growth rate of agriculture in India is low. In 2022-23, it was 3.3%, which is lower than the previous two years, which recorded 4.1% and 3.5%, respectively. The growth rate varies depending on the monsoon, crop prices, and other factors.

India’s farm productivity, measured by the gross value added (GVA) per worker, which was Rs. 1,00,000 in 2022-23, is much lower than the global average of Rs. 3,60,000. India’s farm productivity is constrained by factors such as small and fragmented land holdings, lack of irrigation, low use of technology, and poor market linkages. According to the government, many of these problems were sought to be tackled by the laws that the Indian government had proposed in 2021.

After the previous round of protests and the repealing of the farm laws, the government has offered what it considers alternative solutions such as MSP for select crops and increased procurement efforts. It has also held multiple rounds of talks with farmers but has not been able to agree on some of the demands such as MSP for all crops. One of the main constraints is the lack of resources to be able to do that.

The problem is compounded by the fact that with a few exceptions, agricultural income is generally exempt from income tax in India. Under the existing laws, even rich farmers with large holdings can be exempt from tax, and this often creates a loophole for tax evasion and inequality.

Is there a solution to the farmers vs. government impasse?

While farm union leaders are demanding guarantees, backed by law, of greater state support or a minimum purchase price for all crops, the government is unable to acquiesce. The central government announces support prices for more than 20 crops every year. However, agriculture falls under the jurisdiction of individual states and their buying agencies can usually buy only rice and wheat at the support level, which benefits only an estimated 7% of farmers.

The procurement of rice and wheat, the two staple foodgrains, is aimed at building a food bank to supply to a massive food welfare system in India that entitles more than half of India’s population (or 800 million people) to subsidised (essentially, free) rice and wheat through the public distribution system. In 2024-25, this food subsidy bill is estimated at Rs 2.05 lakh crore ($24.7 billion). The government has extended its flagship free food welfare scheme, which was announced during the Covid-19 pandemic, for the next five years.

Given the magnitude of the food subsidy bill, the government will find it difficult to extend the MSP to all crops as the farmers are demanding. That is why it is not able to guarantee by law the state support for procurement as demanded by the farmers. The government had, while repealing the three farm laws in 2021, said that it would form a panel of farmers and government representatives to find viable solutions to the issue. Farmers are now accusing the government of going slow on that assurance.

What to expect in the future?

The renewed protests are smaller than the massive agitations that marked the 2020-21 movement but the farmers remain persistent. The government has said it is willing to engage in dialogue but is hesitant in meeting the core demands of legally guaranteed MSP and loan waivers.

The government stresses that alternative solutions and a focus on long-term reforms are the only way to resolve the impasse but farmers are not convinced. The outcome would depend on the government’s willingness to address core demands and farmers’ ability to sustain the movement.

There is, obviously, also a political aspect to it, which is heightened by the coming elections. Further escalation of protests or a deadlock could impact agricultural production and political stability, both highly undesirable outcomes for the ruling regime that is keenly looking to be re-elected for a third term in May.

Hema Performs ‘Nritya Seva’ In Ram Mandir

Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini, who is currently in the birthplace of Lord Ram, performed ‘Nritya Seva’ musical and dance performance within the temple premises in Ayodhya on Saturday.

Dressed in heavy yellow ethnic attire paired with heavy jewellery and dramatic makeup, Hema Malini resonated elegance in her scintillating look at Ram Mandir.

After her performance, Hema expressed her feelings and told ANI, “I am very and we are all very fortunate to have witnessed the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Lord Ram. The entire country is happy. I want to thank all the members of the temple for giving me the opportunity to perform ‘Nritya Seva’ inside the temple premises.”

On Friday, Hema Malini paid a visit to the historic Ram Mandir. After offering prayers at the temple, the actor told ANI, “We had a good ‘darshan’. All the arrangements are good here…Because of the temple, so many people are getting employment.”

The Padma Shri awardee is best known for her work in Bollywood films like ‘Dream Girl’, ‘Sholay’, ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’, ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, and ‘Satte Pe Satta’ among others.

The Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Lord Ram in the newly built Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya was held on January 22, led by rituals that were performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While addressing the dignitaries invited to the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, PM Modi said the unveiling of the Ram Lalla idol is not only a moment of triumph after a prolonged struggle but also one of humility.

“This is not just a moment of celebration for us all but also one to reflect the coming of age of the Indian society. This occasion is as much about triumph as it is about humility. The world is replete with instances of countries that faced a lot of difficulties resolving historic wrongs and injustices. However, the way we untied the knots and resolved all outstanding issues gives us hope that our future is going to be more beautiful and fulfilling than our past,” PM Modi said.

The PM said that the construction of the temple, which some feared would set off a firestorm, now stands as a symbol of peace, patience, harmony and integration.

“There was also a time when some people used to say ‘Ram Mandir bana toh aag lag jaegi’ (the making of the Ram Temple would set off a firestorm). Such people lacked an understanding of the purity of our society, the spirit that binds us all. This majestic abode of Shri Ram Lalla will now stand as a symbol of peace, patience, mutual harmony and social unity. The construction of this temple did not set off a fire but exuded a positive energy that has been infectious for us all,” he added. (ANI)

Zelenskyy France

France To Deliver Arms, Train Ukraine Soldiers In Key Agreement With Kyiv

Amid the ongoing war with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a new long-term security pact with France, hours after securing a similar deal and aid from Germany, Al Jazeera reported on Saturday.

According to the report, under the new agreement, France vows to deliver more arms, train soldiers in Ukraine and send up to three billion euros (USD 3.23 billion) in military aid.

The pact is set to run for 10 years and will not only strengthen cooperation in the area of artillery but also help pave the way towards Ukraine’s future integration into the European Union and NATO, stated Macron and Zelenskyy.

“Our cooperation yields results in the protection of life in Ukraine and our entire Europe,” Zelenskyy said on his social media platforms, shortly before meeting Macron.

Earlier on Friday, the German Ministry of Defence announced that a deal had been signed between Zelenskyy and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Al Jazeera reported.

Al Jazeera reported that the German security pact, which will last for 10 years, commits Germany to supporting Ukraine with military assistance and hitting Russia with sanctions and export controls, and ensuring that Russian assets remain frozen.

Berlin also prepared another immediate support package worth 1.13 billion euros (USD 1.22bn) that is focused on air defence and artillery.

“The document’s importance cannot be overestimated. It makes clear that Germany will continue to support an independent Ukraine in its defence against the Russian invasion,” Scholz said.

“And if in the future there is another Russian aggression, we have agreed on detailed diplomatic, economic and military support,” he added.

In January, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also signed a security accord with Ukraine.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has repeatedly been stressing the importance of sending more aid to Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported.

On Tuesday, the US Senate passed a USD 61 billion aid bill for Ukraine. But the bill still faces an uncertain fate with several right-wing US Republicans in the House already saying they will block it as the money should be spent on domestic issues, Al Jazeera reported.

On Friday, Biden highlighted that the reported death of Russian anticorruption activist Alexey Navalny brings new urgency to the need for Congress to approve funds for Ukraine to stave off Moscow’s invasion.

“The failure to support Ukraine at this critical moment will never be forgotten,” Biden said. “And the clock is ticking. This has to happen. We have to help now.” (ANI)

Chief Tulsi Bhai

Jaishankar Calls On WHO Chief Tulsi Bhai

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on the sidelines of the ongoing Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

EAM Jaishankar discussed traditional medicine and pandemic preparedness with the WHO chief while calling him ‘Tulsi Bhai’.

“Glad to met DG World Health Organization @DrTedros. Discussed traditional medicine and pandemic preparedness. Thank you Tulsi bhai!,” the EAM posted on X.

The story around Tedros’s Gujarati name ‘Tulsi Bhai’ goes back to his visit to India last year when PM Modi accorded him the Gujarati name.

Tedros was in Gujarat to attend several conventions on health and medicine and PM Modi, in his welcome address to the WHO chief, gave him the name ‘Tulsi bhai’.

Later, responding to his new name, the WHO chief said he liked being called by a name that makes him a ‘pucca Gujarati’.

The 60th Munich Security Conference (MSC) got underway as an in-person event from February 16-18, at its traditional venue, the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, according to an official statement. This year’s conference is being held under the chairmanship of the German Ambassador to the US, Christoph Heusgen.

Earlier, on Friday, EAM Jaishankar held a meeting with Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (local time). The talks between the two leaders focused on the present state of bilateral ties.

Additionally, Jaishankar held a meeting with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock and discussed global challenges and the pathway ahead. The two leaders reviewed preparations for the next meeting of India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations.

Taking to X, Jaishankar posted, “So good to meet my German colleague FM @ABaerbock on #MSC2024 sidelines. A wide-ranging conversation on global challenges and the pathway ahead. Appreciated her insights and assessments. Also reviewed preparations for the next meeting of our Inter-Governmental Consultations.”

He also held a meeting with Argentina’s counterpart, Diana Mondino, holding discussions on the economic and political cooperation between the two nations.

In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, “Pleasure to meet FM @DianaMondino of Argentina this evening. Discussed our economic and political cooperation. Look forward to working with her.” (ANI)

BRICS Jaishankar

Clearly, 30 Countries Saw Value In It: Jaishankar

Addressing the rise of BRICS and other middle powers in the evolving geopolitical landscape, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday applauded the intergovernmental organisation, stating a large number of countries “willing to join” the platform.

“Like any product, you test at a market, we tested it (BRICS) last year in the market, asking how many of want to join BRICS, and we got almost 30 countries who were willing to join BRICS,” he said, adding, “Clearly, 30 countries saw value in it, there must be something good with that.”

Jaishankar’s remarks came at the Munich Security Conference 2024. He was seated with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Annalena Baerbock.

The moderator Roula Khalaf had questioned Jaishankar and Blinken if the development of BRICS, and other groups poses a challenge to the West or potentially serves as a bridge, particularly amid the ongoing competition between the US and China.

Jaishankar emphasised the historical context of BRICS, highlighting that it originated during an era of strong Western dominance when the G7 held a premier position. “You had a number of significant powers in the world, who felt they were not member of G7 but maybe they also brought value to the table by sitting and discussing with others. So, in a sense you had a collection of these countries which were originally four and South Africa joined later,” he said.

“It’s a very interesting group, because it is geographically disparate as it as it can be, yet it is bound by the fact that these discussions, we’ve had in a decade and a half have been very useful for all of use,” he added.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Importantly, Jaishankar stressed the need to distinguish between being non-Western and anti-Western. “I think, its important today to make a distinction, between being non-West and anti-West, I’d not only characterise India as a country, which is non-West but which has an extremely strong relation with the Western countries, getting better by the days,” the EAM also said.

“Not everybody necessarily in that grouping might qualify for that description, but the contribution the BRICS has made, if one looks at G7 and how it evolved into the G20,” he added.

Agreeing with Jaishankar’s perspective, Antony Blinken emphasised the flexibility needed in global relations.

“I’m tempted to say what my friend said. What we don’t need to do and what we are not doing, is trying to design world into rigid blocks. Each issue we have to deal with in the interest of American people, may have different collections and coalitions of countries that bring certain experiences and capacities. I think to call that as variable geometry,” the US Secretary said.

Acknowledging the strength of the India-US relationship, Blinken emphasised that regardless of India’s role as a leading member of BRICS and the US as a leading member of G7, the two countries collaborate in various forums such as the G20, AUCUS, and the Quad.

“As Jai (EAM Jaishankar) said, the relationship between our countries is the strongest it’s ever been, makes no difference that India happens to be leading member of BRICS, we (the US) are leading member of G7. We have the G20 and we have multiple things that we are doing together in different ways,” he added.

“India and US working together in AUCUS, working together in Quad, and variety of other fora. All of this goes to point that complexity, demands we find different ways to work together and it shouldn’t be done on an exclusive basis. Our default of course is to work…with fellow democracies,” Blinken also said.

Meanwhile, on India’s stand and commitment to buy Russian oil despite respective sanctions on Moscow amid the military conflict with Ukraine, Jaishankar reaffirmed, saying, it should not be a problem for others.
