Election Commission

EC Holds Meet To Discuss Measures To Mitigate Risks Due To Heatwave

Following forecast of above-normal temperatures and heat waves in parts of the country, the Election Commission held a meeting on Monday with different stakeholders, including officials of the Met department.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu chaired the meeting.

The meeting discussed measures to mitigate risk occurring out of heatwaves during the Lok Sabha polls. Six more phases of the seven phased exercise are yet to be held in the country.

Officers of the Indian Meteorological Department, National Disaster Management Authority and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare attended the meeting.

Director General of Meteorology of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said, “IMD is in continuous touch with the Election Commission of India. Along with seasonal forecasts, we are doing monthly, week-wise and everyday forecasts and giving them forecasts about heat waves, and humidity levels. We are providing the ECI, inputs and forecasts about the places where elections are going to be held in different phases.”

Previously, on April 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired a meeting to review preparedness for the ensuing heat wave season.

The Prime Minister was briefed about the temperature outlook for the period from April to June 2024 including the forecasts for the upcoming hot weather season (April to June), the likelihood of above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country, especially with high probability over Central India and western peninsular India.

Preparedness in the health sector was reviewed in terms of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, ORS and drinking water.

IMD had issued an updated Seasonal Outlook for the hot weather season (April to June) 2024, in which it said, above Normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country, especially with high probability over central India and western peninsular India.

Addressing reporters, Mohapatra, DG, IMD said, “Normal to below normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of western Himalayan region, NE states and north Odisha during this hot weather season”.

Talking about the impact of heatwaves, the IMD Director General said that during heatwaves elevated temperatures pose significant risks, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

“Prolonged periods of extreme heat can lead to dehydration and strain infrastructure such as power grids and transportation systems. To address these challenges, authorities must take proactive measures like providing access to cooling centres, issuing heat advisories, and implementing strategies to alleviate urban heat island effects in affected areas. Efforts are also needed for safeguarding public health and minimizing the adverse impacts of heat waves,” he said.

Voting for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections concluded on Friday which saw a 60 per cent voter turnout across 21 States and Union Territories.

The second phase will be held on April 26 and the remaining phases will be May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1 accordingly. The last general elections in 2019 were also held in seven phases. (ANI)

“Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister for a third consecutive term, and it is sure. Congress had ruled the country for several decades, but they did nothing. In the last 10 years, India has reached a new height under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. People are now comparing the Congress’s tenure with the NDA’s 10-year tenure,” Atul Bora told ANI.

Replying to a question about Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi’s claim that the BJP’s number will come down below 200 seats, the AGP president said that Congress is now losing its confidence level.

“In the last five state assembly polls, they (Congress) had full confidence that they would win the election, but what happened? This time also, they are going to lose,” Atul Bora said.

On Sunday night, Atul Bora and AGP working president Keshab Mahanta, who is also the Assam Health Minister, attended an election campaign meeting in the Binodini area under the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat.

“In the Karimganj seat, BJP candidate Kripanath Mallah is going to win. The people of Karimganj have extended their support to PM Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance,” Atul Bora said.

Talking about the first phase of polls in Assam, the AGP president said, “BJP will win all five seats in the first phase of polls.

“NDA will win 14 seats in Assam. I am very confident,” Bora said.

AGP is a partner of NDA and part of the BJP-led Assam government.

In Assam, BJP has contested 11 seats while AGP has contested 2 seats (Barpeta and Dhubri) and UPPL in one seat (Kokrajhar).

Atul Bora further said, “The minorities are now extending their support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.”

Assam recorded 75.95 per cent voter turnout in the first phase of polls, which was held in five parliamentary constituencies in the state on Friday.

Israel War Cabinet Discusses Efforts To Free Hostages Held In Gaza

The Israeli war cabinet held a meeting late Sunday (local time) to discuss efforts for the release of remaining hostages held in Gaza, CNN reported, citing an Israeli official.

The war cabinet has four members – Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant, and National Unity Party chairman Benny Gantz.

In a video statement, released by the Israel government’s press office to mark Passover on Sunday, Netanyahu said, “This night, 133 of our dear brothers and sisters do not sit at the Seder table and are still imprisoned in the hell of Hamas.”

He accused Hamas of rejecting proposals for a hostage deal “outright.” He announced that Israel will soon land “additional and painful blows” and will increase “military and political pressure” on Hamas to release the hostages, according to CNN report.

For weeks, international mediators have facilitated talks on a ceasefire and hostage deal. However, the talks have yielded no apparent breakthroughs.

Earlier this month, Hamas indicated that it was not able to identify and track down 40 Israeli hostages needed for the first phase of a ceasefire deal, CNN reported, citing Israeli official and a source familiar with the discussions.

According to the framework outlined by the negotiators, Hamas should release 40 of the remaining hostages, including all the women as well as sick and elderly men during a first six-week pause in the fighting. In exchange, Israel would release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, the report said.

Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Israel Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi on Sunday gave approval to battle plans at the Southern Command headquarters in Beersheba, The Times of Israel reported.

Head of the Israel’s Southern Command Major General Yaron Finkelman and other officers attended the “assessment of the situation and approval of plans for the continuation of the war,” according to the IDF, according to The Times of Israel report.

Meanwhile, the Israeli soldiers have concluded a two-day operation in the Nur al-Shams refugee camp near Tulkarm in the West Bank, CNN reported, citing the IDF.

At least 14 people, including one child, were killed in the Israeli soldiers’ operation, the report said, citing the Palestinian Ministry of Health and official news agency Wafa.

According to IDF, security forces killed 10 “terrorists” and arrested “eight wanted suspects” during its “extensive counterterrorism” operation which began on Thursday. (ANI)

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh

Siachen Is India’s Capital Of Valour, Bravery: Rajnath

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday visited the Siachen base camp and called it India’s capital of valour and bravery.

Rajnath Singh also interacted with the Armed Forces personnel deployed at Kumar post of Siachen Glacier in Ladakh. He also exchanged sweets with them.

On the occasion, Rajnath Singh said, “I congratulate you for the way you protect the country at the world’s highest battlefield, Siachen Glacier. The land of Siachen is not an ordinary land. It is a symbol of the country’s sovereignty and perseverance. It represents our national determination. Our national capital is Delhi, Mumbai is our economic capital, and our technological capital is Bengaluru. Siachen is India’s capital of valour and bravery.”

Rajnath Singh also laid a wreath at the war memorial in Siachen base camp as he paid tribute to the bravehearts.

Army Chief Manoj Pande also accompanied Defence Minister on the occasion.

On the occasion, the chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ resonated in the air at Kumar’s post at Siachen Glacier in Ladakh as jawans raised slogans after interacting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Rajnath Singh was scheduled to visit Siachen on March 24 to celebrate Holi with troops, but due to ‘inclement weather’, the programme was changed to Leh, where the Defence Minister celebrated the occasion with armed forces at Leh Military station.

The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas and is often considered the world’s highest battlefield.

Earlier on April 13, the Indian Air Force celebrated the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Operation Meghdoot’ which was carried out by the Indian forces to gain control of the Siachen glacier by thwarting Pakistan’s efforts to capture it.

Kharge Congress J-K

We Have Numbers Needed To Stop BJP: Mallikarjun

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks that the Congress is now incapable of contesting on 300 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who landed in Ranchi to address the INDIA bloc rally, said he has not taken responsibility to answer every question of PM, declaring that the numbers needed to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party from coming to power are with them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Congress which had once won 400 seats is now incapable of contesting on 300 seats in this Lok Sabha election.

“Let him (PM Modi) speak whatever he wants to. I am not here to answer his questions. The number needed to stop them (BJP) are there with us,” Kharge told ANI.

He further thanked former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s wife Kalpana Soren, Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren and Congress workers for organising a rally.

“There were lakhs of people (in the rally). I was late as I was in a programme in Satna, Madhya Pradesh. I was happy that Mrs Soren, the Chief Minister and Congress organised such a huge rally. INDIA bloc has got an asset because of this rally,” he added.

The grand rally was being held amidst the Lok Sabha polls in the absence of former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and the AAP’s Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, two of the key faces of the INDIA bloc. Both Hemant Soren and Kejriwal are in judicial custody.

Earlier today, taking a jibe at the deteriorating condition of the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Congress which had once won 400 seats is now incapable of contesting on 300 seats in this Lok Sabha election adding that the party is the “symbol of instability.”

He further said that the Congress party, which is a symbol of instability, and its alliance can never run the country properly.

“Congress was in power for 60 years; once they used to win 400 seats, but today they can’t even find candidates for 300 seats. They are paying the price of their wrongdoing. Now they have made an opportunistic alliance in the name of the INDIA bloc which got its wings clipped before it could take flight. The so-called allies are contesting against each other in the States and at least in 25 per cent of seats,” PM Modi said.

Addressing a public rally in Rajasthan’s Jalore, PM Modi said that the people of the country is punishing the Congress for its “sins”.

“You have given your blessings to BJP every time, this time too, the people of Jalore-Sirohi are saying ‘Phir ek baar Modi sarkar’. In the first phase of polling for the Lok Sabha elections, half of Rajasthan has taught a good lesson to the Congress party. The patriotic people of Rajasthan know that Congress couldn’t provide a strong government in the Centre. Their government used to run on remote control. The country does not want the conditions that existed before 2014 to return again,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister further without naming Sonia Gandhi, slammed the former Congress president for choosing the Rajya Sabha route to reach Parliament.

“The Congress party itself is responsible for the condition it has reached today. Earlier, Rajasthan sent former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Rajya Sabha, and now you have another leader of Congress in Rajya Sabha (Sonia Gandhi). People who knew that they could not win, ran away from the race and reached Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan. Congress hollowed the country by spreading the termites of ‘parivaarwad’ and corruption. The youth of the country is so angry with Congress that it doesn’t want to see their face again,” the PM said.

The first phase of voting for 102 parliamentary constituencies spread over 21 states and Union Territories was held on Friday with a voter turnout of nearly 64 per cent. The estimated voter turnout was recorded at 63.89 per cent till 9:00 pm in the first phase of polling. (ANI)

Rajnath to Meet Siachen Troops

Rajnath Singh To Interact With Troops At Siachen On Monday

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be visiting Siachen tomorrow and interacting with the armed forces there on Monday.

“Raksha Mantri Shri @rajnathsingh will visit Siachen tomorrow. He will interact with the Armed Forces personnel deployed in the region,” the Defence Ministry Office posted on X.

The Defence Minister had recently celebrated Holi with the armed forces at Leh Military station on March 24.

Earlier, he was scheduled to celebrate the occasion with troops in Siachen, but due to ‘inclement weather’, the programme was changed to Leh.

He spoke to the Commanding Officer deployed at Siachen on the phone and promised to visit them as soon as possible and is making the visit to fulfill his promise, according to sources.

During his visit, Rajnath Singh will also lay wreath at the Martyr’s Memorial.

Meanwhile, the Defence Minister carried out a whirlwind campaign during the first phase of ongoing Lok Sabha elections. He held 26 public meetings and three road shows across 12 states.

The Defence Minister recently responded to China’s renaming of 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh and strongly asserted that India wants to maintain good relations with its neighbours but if someone tries to hurt the country’s honour then today India has the power to respond to it.

“China has changed the names of 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh and posted on its website. I want to tell my neighbour that nothing is going to happen by changing the names. If tomorrow we change the names of some provinces and some States of China, so by doing that will those areas become a part of India? Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to say that friends change in life but neighbours do not change,” he said at a rally in Arunchal Pradesh.

“India’s thinking is that we want to maintain good relations with all our neighbours but if someone tries to hurt India’s honour, then today India has the power to respond to it,” Rajnath Singh added.

The Defence Minister strongly raised the issue of not developing the border infrastructure and attacked the Congress party for being “scared” of the enemy.

Addressing a public meeting in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna, he said, “Congress did not carry out development work in border villages and areas because they were scared of the enemy that it could exploit the new roads to enter into the country but China kept developing its border infrastructure.”

Rajnath Singh served as the Home Minister in the BJP government’s first tenure and as the Defence Minister in the second tenure. He is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Lucknow constituency, a seat from which he has been winning for the last two terms.

The 2024 general elections is being held in India in seven phases to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The first phase concluded on April 19, while the next set of polling will happen on April 26. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)

Strong Anti Incumbency Wave

No Modi Wave, Strong Anti-Incumbency Mood: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah exuded confidence in the opposition coalition, INDIA bloc forming government st the Centre, adding that there is a “strong anti-incumbency” against the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.

Talking to ANI in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Siddaramaiah asserted that the Congress party coming to power is the “expected result”. He exuded confidence that the INDIA bloc will garner the required seats to form the government in the Centre.

“Not surprising, it is expected result that the Congress party is going to come back to power. This time NDA headed by the BJP is going to be defeated and INDIA headed by the Congress party is going to get the required number of seats to form the government. It is their illusion. This time there is no Modi wave. This time they have not raised any emotional issues to the people. Last time they raised emotional issues like Pulwama, Article 370 abolition. This time though they have built Sri Ram Temple in Ayodhya it will not make any impact,” the senior Congress leader said while speaking to ANI today.

Siddaramaiah claimed that the ruling party, BJP asserting to win 400 seats is a “strategy” as they are aware of “not getting the required number”.

“They may get 200-220 seats. They are telling they will win 400. Abki Baar 400 paar, that is not possible at all. They are strategically telling this. I believe NDA will not come to power. They know that the NDA will not get the required number which is why strategically they are telling they will win 400 seats,” he said.

“Everywhere I have gone there is a lot of enthusiasm among the voters. I feel the Congress party have a fair chance of winning this election. I hope we will win at least 20 seats in Karnataka,” the Chief Minister said.

He pointed out that the BJP-led NDA had not fulfilled their promises during the previous parliamentary elections on which they vowed to power.

“Though it is a parliamentary election. It is the election for the nation. This time the NDA is going to be defeated. It is because there is strong anti-incumbency against the NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the NDA government’s failure. After all, PM Modi has not fulfilled his promises. So BJP-led by PM Modi will be defeated this time and INDIA led by Congress, will have fair chances for forming the government at the Centre,” Siddaramaiah said.

The Congress leader also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ‘hijacking’ guarantees announced by the grand old party in the previous assembly elections.

“When we announced the guarantees, this same PM Modi criticised us. Now he has hijacked these guarantees. Now he’s telling ‘Modi guarantee, Modi guarantee’,” he said.

“Whether he has fulfilled his promises in 2014 and 2019. This is the point to be considered by the voters. I believe voters are not fools. The voters cannot be fooled at all times. They are quite intelligent. They can understand the political situation in the country and the failure of the government,” he said.

On reports of NDA promising to “change” the Constitution if returned to power, the Congress leader said, “That is the hidden agenda of BJP. They don’t believe in the Constitution, it’s because they believe in manusmriti.”

“So far they have not fulfilled the promises they made during the 2014, and 2019 parliamentary elections and they have shown a step-motherly attitude towards Karnataka. They have not given any money though Karnataka is facing severe drought. They have not given anything promised or announced in the budget. They have not released a single pie. All these things got to show, they have given empty vessel to the people of Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah said.

Earlier in the day, during a public rally in Kolar, the audience reportedly shouted ‘Chombu, Chombu’ (empty vessel) to all the questions asked by CM Siddaramaiah on the promises made by the NDA government.

Siddaramaiah claimed that the BJP has replaced the sitting MPs with new faces on many seats across the country to contest the Lok Sabha elections as they were sceptical of retaining the seats.

“That is why they are going to be defeated. There is no Modi wave this time. In the name of Modi, they can’t win. Unless they are good with the voters. So far there is a strong anti-incumbency against the government and MPs. That is why they have changed the sitting MPs this time, in the entire nation they have changed more than 100 sitting MPs and that is why new faces have been given tickets. They are trying but I don’t think they will succeed in this attempt,” he said.

On asked if the arrests of opposition leaders including former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who are Congress’ alliance partners, will impact the elections, Siddaramaiah said, “People can understand the strategies they (BJP) adopt. They can’t mislead the people everytime. Sometimes it is ok, but not all the time they can fool the people of this country and they can’t underestimate the intelligence of the people.”

On the alleged misuse of investigative agencies by the central government, Siddaramaiah questioned the targeted raids on only Congress leaders.

“Income Tax, ED, CBI comes under Government of India. Why are they conducting raids only on Congress leaders? Why not the BJP leaders? Is it not hate politics? They are creating fear in the minds of the leaders. Many leaders are afraid of the Government of India,” the Chief Minister said.

The polling in Karnataka for the 28 seats in the 18th Lok Sabha will be held on April 26 and May 7 in the second and third phases, respectively. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

In the 2019 elections, the Congress and JD-S alliance suffered a significant defeat, with the BJP securing a record 25 seats. (ANI)

CAA Mamata Amit Shah

Bihar Was Converted Into Jungle Raj Under Lalu-Rabri Govt: Shah

Launching a scathing attack on Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leaders, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Sunday that Bihar was converted into a ‘Jungle Raj’ under the Lalu-Rabri government.

Addressing a public rally here today, Shah said that PM Modi has brought a huge transformation in the lives of poor people.

“PM Modi has done the work to annihilate ‘parivarvaad’. PM Modi also destroyed casteism, and appeasement and worked for the upliftment of every citizen. PM Modi has brought a huge transformation in the lives of poor people. Today Lalu Yadav and Congress party together fighting the election against BJP and JD(U). You all remember the Lalu-Rabri government, Bihar was converted into a ‘jungle raj.’ Today he (Lalu Yadav) is sitting with the Congress party, I want to tell him (Lalu Yadav) that the same Congress party opposed Backward classes, suppressed the report of the Kakasaheb Kalelkar Commission report, and opposed the Mandal Commission report,” Shah said.

“The poor, backward, and OBCs were all subjected to atrocities. Ever since the NDA government came to power and Nitish became CM, atrocities against everyone have stopped. Nitish ji has provided electricity to every village and every house, but the INDI Alliance wants to take Bihar back to the Lantern era and oppress OBCs,” Shah added.

Further, the home minister said that Congress and Lalu Yadav were avoiding Article 370 for 70 years and Modi ji abolished it in August 2019.

Modi ji ended Naxalism and cracked down on terrorism. There was the UPA government, and terrorists from Pakistan used to come and carry out bomb blasts here. Within 10 days of the Uri and Pulwama attacks, Modi ji conducted surgical and air strikes in Pakistan and eliminated terrorists,” Shah said.

Shah also emphasized that the BJP made Narendra Modi the first OBC Prime Minister.

“We made a poor tea seller’s son the PM. Modi ji has made 35 per cent backward and extremely backward MPs as ministers in his cabinet and has worked on adding 16 new castes to OBC. We gave free ration to more than 80 lakh people, built more than 12 crore toilets, and gave Ujjwala gas connections to more than 10 crore mothers,” he added. (ANI)
