Rahul Gandhi BJP

BJP Working For Few Businessmen: Rahul

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre is working towards benefitting selected businessmen in the country adding that key public infrastructure in the country has been handed over to them to make profits.

Addressing an election rally in Bhandara, Rahul Gandhi said, “This BJP and PM Modi is running government for few businessmen in this country. One of them is Adani…go home and google what is the price of Adani shares. In this country, 22 people have as much wealth as 70 crore people. PM Modi’s only job is to divert attention and Adani has only job to take money out of your pockets.”

On the Congress manifesto for Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi said that a lot of consultation and feedback was taken from the public during the drafting process.

“We made our manifesto thoughtfully. It was not made in a closed room. It was made after talking to thousands of people. This is the people’s manifesto,” he said.

Earlier, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted the promises made by the Congress party in its poll manifesto and said that they would remove the poverty from the country by transferring Rs 1 lakh into the account of one female from a poverty-stricken household, which comes out to Rs 8,500 per month.

“The Congress Government will transfer Rs 1 lakh (in a year) to the bank account of one woman of every poor household in the country…If you are below the poverty line then every year, Rs 1 lakh (Rs 8,500 per month) khatakhat khatakhat aata rahega aur ek jhatke se hum Hindustan se gareebi ko mita denge,” Rahul Gandhi said addressing a poll rally in Rajasthan.

The Congress party released its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections in Delhi on April 5. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi were also present at the event. (ANI)

National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah

BJP Is Afraid Of INDIA Bloc: Farooq Abdullah

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that the BJP is afraid of the INDIA bloc and its candidates.

Farooq also asked, Why can’t the Prime Minister grant statehood to Jammu and Kashmir now?

“India Bloc will win all six seats. What is a dynasty? We are elected through elections. Is there no dynasty in PM Modi’s party? Is this only in the National Conference and Congress? When an industrialist wants to make his children industrialists, does he have to take votes? But we have to take it, we have to go to the people and work for them. If we don’t, they will reject us,” he said.

“BJP is afraid of the alliance and its candidates. They don’t know what to do. The only propaganda they have is falsehood. Why can’t the Prime Minister grant us statehood now? What is he waiting for? He comes to Udhampur and promises that,” he added.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the Centre is committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, adding that assembly elections will also be held soon.

“The time is not far when assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir also. Jammu and Kashmir will get back its state status. You will be able to share your dreams with your MLAs, and your ministers,” PM Modi said while addressing a public rally in Udhampur.

He pointed out that now after decades, elections were taking place in Jammu and Kashmir without fear of terrorism and cross border firing.

“Vikas bhi ho raha hai, vishvaas bhi badh raha hai” (there is progress and confidence), the Prime Minister said.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into a union territory in October 2019. The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 was passed in 2019, and Article 370 of the Constitution of India, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was abrogated.

The BJP had won three out of six seats in Jammu and Kashmir in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The National Conference won the remaining three seats. (ANI)

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena

Subsidies In Delhi Not Affected By Jailing Of Kejriwal: LG

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said that no subsidy scheme will be stopped and people should reject rumours and statements made due to vested political interests.

“Electricity, water and bus ride subsidies will continue in Delhi. An individual being in jail (Arvind Kejriwal) as per due process of law does not affect government schemes,” he said.

He further stated that the schemes part of the budget approved by the centre and L-G does not belong to an individual or a political party.

Taking a dig at Aam Admi Party (AAP), he said, “Members of a particular political party and its Ministers making patently false and deliberately misleading statements to create confusion.”

“Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has taken serious note of false and deliberately misleading statements issued by not only Members of a particular political party but also Ministers sworn to the constitutional oath of office, wherein it is being propagated that the scheme and subsidies about ‘free’ electricity, water and bus rides for women will be stopped, since the Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal is in jail under judicial custody,” stated a press release from L-G.

“The purported imaginary stoppage of these schemes in future is being attributed to the Central Government and the Lt. Governor. Saxena has assured the people of Delhi that none of the subsidy schemes benefitting the poor will be discontinued and appealed to them to not pay heed to the statements and rumours being spread by political vested interests. The people should reject any attempts at misleading them,” the LG has appealed.

LG VK Saxena has underlined that these schemes are paid from the consolidated fund of NCT of Delhi and not from the account of any individual or political party. These schemes are funded by the people of Delhi themselves, who contribute to NCTD’s consolidated fund by way of taxes.

“The Lt. Governor has emphasised that the aforementioned subsidy schemes are those of the government and not driven by or dependent on any individual holding any position and therefore, because of any individual being in jail, the question of a scheme getting affected does not arise. These schemes have budgetary allocation in the budget document, which is in turn approved by the Govt. of India, as per constitutional and statutory provisions,” he added.

LG Saxena has reiterated the earlier position taken by the Civil Administration in the City, that an individual being in jail under judicial custody, as per due process of law, does not affect any scheme, especially those that have been duly approved by the Govt. of India and the Lt. Governor himself, before being introduced in, and subsequently passed by the Delhi Legislative Assembly. (ANI)

AAP MP Sanjay Singh Kejriwal

Kejriwal Being Tortured In Prison, Claims Sanjay

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh hit out at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday, alleging that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is being “tortured” inside the Tihar jail at the behest of the central government.

The AAP leader also said that the jail administration carried out “inhuman” behaviour and refused to allow Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, to meet him in person.

Speaking at a press conference in the national capital, Sanjay Singh said, “Elected thrice with an overwhelming majority, the Chief Minister of 2 crore people in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, is being ‘tortured,’ at the behest of the Government of India, at the behest of the Prime Minister of the country.”

“Efforts are being made to break his morale and every now and then an attempt is being made to destroy even the minimum rights and facilities available to anyone and all this is being done openly,” he said.

Adding further, Sanjay Singh said, “The information I want to give you today may have come for the first time in the history of Tihar Jail. It is an obvious matter, the officials in any administration are pawns who work under the instructions of the higher-ups.”

“Now, let me tell you about the meeting permit for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal at Tihar. According to the jail manual and rules of the jail, under 602 and 605, anyone can have a face-to-face meeting in the jail,” he said.

“However, when Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, whom everybody knows is at the present time worried and tensed, and while his parents, both of whom are ill, came to meet him at the jail, she was told that she could not meet him face-to-face or in a room but rather through a window,” he added.

He further questioned and said, “Why was such inhuman behaviour meted out towards him? This inhuman act has been done just to humiliate and discourage Arvind Kejriwal,” he claimed.

“I am saying with full responsibility that even the dreaded criminals are allowed to meet in the barrack, but a three-time CM of Delhi is allowed to meet his wife through a window with a glass in between,” said the AAP leader.

Arvind Kejriwal is currently in Tihar Jail under judicial custody. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate last month in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

Sanjay Singh, who was in jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy case since October last year, got out on bail earlier this month.

Earlier this week, he claimed Tihar authorities threatened to block his family’s visits after passing a message to AAP MLAs through his lawyers.

The BJP has demanded Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation as the Delhi chief minister on moral grounds.

The AAP says he will continue to work for Delhi from inside jail because he hasn’t been convicted in any case. (ANI)

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Iran Seizes Israel-Linked Ship MCS ARIES

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy seized the Israel-linked MSC ARIES container ship near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, The Times of Israel reported, citing Iranian news agency.

The ship in question was the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, a container ship owned by Zodiac Maritime, based in London. Zodiac Maritime is a division of Zodiac Group, owned by Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer.

The MSC Aries was last seen on Friday, sailing towards the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Dubai, according to The Times of Israel. The ship is currently sailing through the Persian Gulf, according to ship tracking site, Marine Traffic.

Tensions escalated between Iran and the West amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

Amid fears of the ongoing hostilities in Gaza devolving into a larger Middle-Eastern conflict, US President Joe Biden said earlier today that he expects Iran to attack Israel ‘sooner than later’.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden told reporters when asked how imminent an Iranian attack on Israel would be.

As has been reported globally, Tehran vowed revenge after Israel launched airstrikes on the Iranian embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, taking out three top military generals.

The US has been on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel in recent days, as fears grow of a wider regional war.

There remains a “real, credible and viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said on Friday, following Israel’s attack on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria last week, killing three Iranian generals.

Biden, who warned this week that Iran was threatening a ‘significant attack’ on Israel, has been receiving constant updates on the situation from his national security team.

The US and several other countries, including India, Britain and France, issued new travel guidelines for government employees in Israel as the Iranian threat loomed.

“In view of the prevailing situation in the region, all Indians are advised not to travel to Iran or Israel until further notice. All those who are currently residing in Iran or Israel are requested to get in touch with Indian embassies there and register themselves,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated in an official release.

“We’re watching this very, very closely,” said John Kirby, the US National Security Council spokesman, who declined to provide information about the expected timing of the threat. (ANI)

‘Kejriwal’s Arrest Is An Attack On Indian Democracy’

Rani Rajput, a journalism student at Jagran Institute of Management and Mass Communication (JIMMC) in Noida, says Kejriwal’s arrest raises questions on ED impartiality. Her views:

My initial reaction to the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and the ED (enforcement directorate) raids targeting opposition leaders was one of deep concern, while holding the commitment to objective and impartial scrutiny. This act of the BJP government clearly shows that they want to bring a certain kind of dictatorship in the country, since there is no evidence to show that the elected Delhi chief minister is guilty. These events raise questions about the impartiality of the law enforcement agencies, and the potential misuse of power for political purposes.

It is the same scenario with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia who is languishing in prison for over a year; even while the question remains about any solid evidence to prove the charges against him. If they are involved in money laundering, then show us where the money has gone? There is no money trail established thus far.

Indeed, we cannot keep anyone in jail like this merely on accusation and suspicion. Additionally, it’s crucial to uphold journalistic principles of transparency, accountability and the protection of freedom of expression, especially in an environment where political tensions are high. Hence, reporting about these sensitive cases should be based on unbiased, balanced, and evidence-based objectivity.

India is a democracy. Such acts reflect the characteristics of brazen dictatorial tendencies. We can clearly see that the current ruling party at the Centre does not want to give up their power at any cost. The arrest of opposition leaders and targeted raids by central agencies in the weeks leading up to the Lok Sabha polls, and earlier, can send a message signifying the suppression of dissent and the absolute dominance of those in power. In a democracy, there must be free and fair elections, transparency and rule of law must be followed. With these methods to suppress the opposition, it erodes trust in the democratic process and can lead to disillusionment among the citizens.

Besides, as a citizen of Delhi, I think Kejriwal and his government has done good work for the people of Delhi since they have focused on the basic needs of common citizens. More so, everyone’s needs cannot be fulfilled just by building temples! The initiatives, such as providing free water and subsidized electricity, have been widely praised for their direct and positive impact on the lives of citizens, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. These policies have helped alleviate the financial burden on low income households.

Similarly, in the education sector, the government’s investment in public schools, including infrastructure upgrades and teachers’-training, has led to enhanced educational outcomes and higher excellence in primary and secondary education for thousands of students, mostly coming from humble backgrounds. Additionally, initiatives such as mohalla clinics have expanded access to healthcare services for ordinary citizens.

However, it’s also important to consider the challenges and criticisms faced by the Delhi government.  Some critics argue that the government’s policies may not be sustainable in the long-term. However, overall, Kejriwal’s government’s performance in Delhi depends on various factors, including their social welfare priorities and perspectives. Certainly, as a journalism student, it’s important to critically analyse, both the successes and the shortcomings of government policies.
