Prabhas Deepika Padukone-starrer 'Kalki 2898 AD'

Prabhas, Deepika’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Postponed Due To LS Polls

It looks like fans have to wait a little longer to watch Prabhas and Deepika Padukone-starrer ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ on the big screen, as the film’s release has been postponed because of the Lok Sabha polls 2024.

As per a source, the film, which was supposed to be out on May 9, will now hit the theatres on a new date. The makers will soon make an official statement regarding the change in the release date.

The sci-fi flick is helmed by Nag Ashwin, known for his directorial works such as ‘Yevade Subramanyam’ and ‘Mahanati’. The film also stars veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan.

Recently, Nag Ashwin opened up about Kalki 2898 AD at an event at IIT Bombay.

The director said, “In India, we do not have a lot of sci-fi films. We have done a few time travel films. This one is different because it’s in a whole separate world on its own. Also, in the international sense, it is new because we have not seen India in a future setting or dystopian setting. So now we don’t have to look at London and New York being born, now we can see our cities also.”

He added,” This movie took place in the cusp between before and after Midjourney and before and after Chat GPT. First two years, we did a lot of work and then we realised a lot of work became easier after this text-to-image and image-to-text generator happened.”

‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is not the only film that is facing uncertainty over its May 9 release date due to clashes with elections. Vishwak Sen’s Gangs of Godavari has also been postponed.

The makers of Vishwak Sen and Neha Sshetty’s Gangs of Godavari announced on X that the film will be released on May 17, soon after the election dates were announced. “Get ready to witness the Most rugged and violent tale from the banks of Godavari! Mass ka Das @VishwakSenActor’s #GangsofGodavari to release on May 17th 2024, worldwide. Meet you in theatres this Summer #GOGOnMay17th,” wrote the film’s producer Sitara Entertainments on X.

The general elections for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases, with the first scheduled for April 19. The counting of votes has been scheduled for June 4. (ANI)

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha

CBI Gets Court Permission To Quiz BRS leader Kavitha In Tihar

The Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi on Friday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation to quiz Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC K Kavitha during judicial custody in Tihar Jail.

CBI through application, sought court permission to interrogate or quiz and record the statement of BRS leader K Kavitha regarding whatsapp chats recovered from Buchi Babu’s phone and documents regarding a land deal, post which 100 crores where allegedly paid to Aam Aadmi Party in kickbacks.

Noted the submissions, the Special Judge Kaveri Baweja allowed CBI petition and permitted concerned officials to visit Tihar for the purpose in any day of coming week.

CBI submitted that a notice U/S 41A Cr.P.C. was issued on 20.02.2024 to Ms. K. Kavitha for joining the investigation on 26.02.2024, but she did not join the investigation and could not be examined. She was subsequently arrested by the ED in the above mentioned connected case on 15.03.2024 and is currently in judicial custody in the said case. It is thus submitted that since Ms. K. Kavitha is required to be examined in connection with the evidence which has surfaced during further investigation of the case in respect of her involvement in the matter.

The Rouse Avenue Court on March 26, 2024, sent BRS MLC K Kavitha to judicial custody till April 9, 2024. She was arrested recently in connection with Delhi excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) arrested K Kavitha MLC, Telangana Legislative Council on March 15, 2024, in the case of Delhi liquor policy scam. A search was also conducted at the residence of K Kavitha in Hyderabad on the same day. During the search proceedings, the ED officials were obstructed by the relatives and associates of K Kavitha, said ED through a statement.

ED investigation revealed that K Kavitha along with others conspired with the top leaders of AAP including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia for getting favours in the Delhi Excise policy-formulation and implementation. In exchange of these favours, she was allegedly involved in paying Rs 100 crore to the AAP leaders.

By the acts of corruption and conspiracy in the formulation and implementation of Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, a continuous stream of illegal funds in the form of kickback, from the wholesalers was generated for the AAP. Further, K Kavitha and her associates were to recover the proceeds of crime paid in advance to AAP and to further generate profits/proceeds of crime from this entire conspiracy, stated ED.

Till date, the ED has conducted searches on 245 locations across the country including Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and other places. 15 persons including Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and Vijay Nair from AAP have been arrested in the case so far.

ED has filed one prosecution complaint and five supplementary complaints in the case so far. Further, out of proceeds of crime generated, assets worth Rs 128.79 crore have been traced so far and have been attached vide provisional attachment orders dated January 24, 2023, and September 3, 2023. Both the attachment orders have been confirmed by the Adjudicating Authority, New Delhi.

ED has filed its first chargesheet in the case. The agency said it has so far undertaken nearly 200 search operations in this case after filing FIR taking cognisance of a CBI case which was registered on the recommendation of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor.

The CBI inquiry was recommended on the findings of the Delhi Chief Secretary’s report filed in July showing prima facie violations of the GNCTD Act 1991, Transaction of Business Rules (ToBR)-1993, Delhi Excise Act-2009, and Delhi Excise Rules- 2010, officials had said.

The ED and the CBI had alleged that irregularities were committed while modifying the Excise Policy, undue favours were extended to licence holders, the licence fee was waived or reduced and the L-1 licence was extended without the competent authority’s approval. The beneficiaries diverted “illegal” gains to the accused officials and made false entries in their books of account to evade detection, the probe agencies said.

As per the allegations, the Excise Department had decided to refund the Earnest Money Deposit of about Rs 30 crore to a successful tenderer against the set rules. Even though there was no enabling provision, a waiver on tendered licence fees was allowed from December 28, 2021, to January 27, 2022, due to COVID-19, the probe agency said and there was alleged loss of Rs 144.36 crore to the exchequer.(ANI)

MP Shashi Tharoor

Tharoor Lashes Out At BJP Over Streaming Of ‘The Kerala Story’ On Doordarshan

Lashing out at the BJP-led Centre over the scheduled streaming of ‘The Kerala Story’ on Doordarshan, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday called it a “propaganda at its cheapest and worst”, adding that it only serves the political interests of the ruling party.

He accused the movie of creating a false narrative about Kerala, which is known for its social harmony and co-existence.

Speaking to ANI while campaigning for the Lok Sabha polls, Tharoor, who is seeking a fresh term in the Lower House from Thiruvananthapuram, said, “To be honest, this is utterly shameful. Because when ‘The Kerala Story’ came out, everybody pointed out that this is not the real Kerala story. Kerala is a state of social harmony and co-existence. It is not a state that is some sort of a mini-Pakistan, as the film tries to show. And yet, the lies of this film being officially circulated by an official broadcaster is truly disgusting, it’s propaganda at its cheapest and worst.”

He further said that the screening would only create a backlash against the BJP in Kerala.

“As far as the country is concerned, this is not something that anyone would admire or respect In Kerala, it is only going to create backlash against the people who are spreading such falsehoods against our state,” the Congress MP said.

Tharoor also accused BJP-led Centre of ‘compromising’ the autonomy of institutions, adding that streaming of the controversial film is only meant to serve its ‘political interests’.

“The autonomy of Doordarshan is guaranteed under the Prasar Bharti Act. But, the BJP government does not understand the meaning of autonomy. They have compromise the autonomy of every institution. This broadcast is only meant to serve only the political interest of the ruling party,” Tharoor added.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also attacked the BJP over the decision to stream the film on the national broadcaster, stating that it should not become the “propaganda machine of the BJP-RSS.”

“The decision by @DDNationalto broadcast the film ‘Kerala Story’, which incites polarisation, is highly condemnable. The national news broadcaster should not become a propaganda machine of the BJP-RSS combine and withdraw from screening a film that only seeks to exacerbate communal tensions ahead of the general elections. Kerala will remain steadfast in opposing such malicious attempts to sow hatred,” Vijayan stated on his handle on social media platform X.

Directed by Sudipto Sen, ‘The Kerala Story’, which was released on May 5, 2023, emerged as one of the most successful films at the box office last year. However, the movie trailer came in for severe criticism from some quarters, with many, including Opposition leaders, alleging that it false claimed that 32,000 women, who went missing from Kerala, were forced into terrorism upon alleged conversion or sold to ISIS as sex slaves.

The movie faced a backlash in several states, with the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government imposing a ban on screening the film in the state.

Earlier, Kerala opposition leader VD Satheesan also demanded that the Centre back off from streaming ‘The Kerala Story’ on Doordarshan, saying that the movie was a “collection of untruth.”

“The strategy of the Sangh Parivar administration led by PM Modi is to create division within the secular society by screening the film ‘The Kerala Story’, which is a collection of untruth. Sensing that the politics of division cannot be used in Kerala, the Sangh Pariwar is using Doordarshan, a central government institution, for political gains. This cannot be accepted,” he said.

Kerala sends 20 members to the Lok Sabha. The voting in the state will be held on April 26.

The counting will take place on June 4. (ANI)

Pakistan Maldives Congress

Cong Manifesto Pledges To Engage With Pakistan

The Congress party will repair India’s relations with the Maldives and will engage with Pakistan on its willingness and ability to end cross-border terrorism if it is voted to power following the Lok Sabha elections poised to be held from April 19, as per the party manifesto released on Friday.

“We will repair relations with the Maldives and work with Myanmar to protect the political and human rights of the people of Myanmar. Engagement with Pakistan depends fundamentally on its willingness and ability to end cross-border Terrorism. Congress will significantly increase the size of the Indian Foreign Service, open more missions abroad, leverage our economic strengths, and acquire a position of leadership through the country’s values and mutually beneficial economic relationships,” the manifesto said.

“There was a consensus on foreign policy since Independence. Unfortunately, in many areas, foreign policy under the BJP/NDA government has witnessed marked departures from this consensus, notably on the ongoing Gaza conflict. Congress pledges to restore India’s global reputation as a voice of peace and moderation in world affairs,” it added.

Emphasising improving bilateral relations with China, Congress promised to work on restoring the status quo ante on India-China borders to ensure the revival of armies patrolling in the areas which were accessible in past.

“Congress recognises that national security is not enhanced by chest-thumping or exaggerated claims but by quiet attention to our borders and resolute defence preparedness. We will work to restore the status quo ante on our borders with China and to ensure that areas where both armies patrolled in the past are again accessible to our soldiers. We will take the necessary steps to adjust our policy towards China until this is achieved,” the manifesto read.

“Congress will pay greater attention to our immediate neighbours. We will re-establish the primacy of our special relationships with Nepal and Bhutan and strengthen them to our mutual benefit. We will enhance economic and cultural relations between India and Bangladesh that are the two most populous countries in South Asia,” it added.

Congress also vowed to work with Sri Lanka to restore the political and commercial relations between the two countries.

“We will work with Sri Lanka to restore the political and commercial relations between the two countries and help Sri Lanka resolve its political issues, especially with the Tamils,” it said vowing to strengthen economic and cultural ties with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Earlier, External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar refuted any doubts regarding India’s relation with its neighbours, adding that there might be “forces” inside India and in the neighbourhood “who want to create problems.”

He further said that barring Pakistan and China, India’s relationship with the neighbourhood is much better that it has been for a long time.

“If we talk about neighbours, please go to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and ask people what they think. During their deepest economic trouble, who stood by? Go to Nepal and ask them where do you get your vaccines, who gave you fertilizer and fuel when the Ukraine trouble happened. So, I won’t agree that our neighbourhood is not in our favour. There may be forces in the neighbourhood and ‘forces behind forces’ who create problems…there may be people in India who like to play out this problem,” the EAM said.

He added, “As I said we have a very abnormal relation with China. With Pakistan, you all know what is the state of current relationship. But, barring those two, our relationship with the neighbourhood has been much better than it has been for a long time.” (ANI)

Shoma Sen Granted Bail

Bhima Koregaon Case: SC Grants Bail to Shoma Sen

The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to professor and women’s rights activist Shoma Sen, accused in Bhima Koregaon case.

A bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Augustine George Masih set aside the Bombay High Court order which rejected her bail plea.

The bail was granted to Sen by the apex court after noting that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) did not oppose her bail.

“We have seen she is of advanced age and the effect of delaying trial at this stage…in addition to her medical conditions. She should not be denied the privilege of being released on bail,” the bench said in its order.

While granting bail to Sen, the apex court imposed certain conditions on her including, she will not leave the State of Maharashtra and surrender the passport.

The top court said Sen shall inform NIA about her residence. She shall use only one mobile number and inform NIA officer about her mobile number and ensure that number remains active and charged, ordered the bench.

The GPS of her mobile should be active and her phone should be paired with phone of NIA officer so that her location can be ascertained, it added.

The bench further said that if the conditions are breached, it would be open to prosecution to seek cancellation of bail.

NIA had earlier informed the apex court that it does not seek the custody of Sen any longer as probe is completed and chargesheet has been filed.

Sen had sought interim bail on the deteriorating health condition and challenged an order of the Bombay High Court declining her bail.

The Bombay High Court had in January 2023 directed Professor Sen to approach the special NIA court for bail before coming to the High Court.

Sen, an English literature professor, has been behind bars since June 6, 2018 for offences under UAPA charges. She had applied for bail before the Pune Sessions Court in December 2018 prior to the filing of the chargesheet and another application after the chargesheet, however, both applications were rejected by the Sessions Court in November 2019.

Later, Sen, the former departmental head at the Nagpur University, approached the Bombay High Court seeking bail. However, the High Court declined to grant her bail. Thereafter, she approached the apex court.

Sen and others were booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 in connection with 2018 caste-based violence that broke out at Bhima Koregaon in Pune, and for having alleged links with the proscribed outfit, Communist Party of India (Maoists). (ANI)

Work Done In 10 Yrs Is Like An Appetizer: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the works done by his government at the Centre in the last ten years are like a ‘trailer’ as there is more to come in the future.

Addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Churu, the PM said that the country has witnessed a change in the last ten years of his government.

“I want to tell you that all we’ve done (developments work) till now, is just a trailer. These days, when we go to big hotels to eat food, they first bring a few appetizers…so what Modi has done (till now) is an appetizer and the main course is yet to come. We have to take the country forward… In the last 10 years, you have seen the country change. Before that, the country was in a very bad condition,” the PM said.

The PM was campaigning for paralympic gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia who will represent the BJP in the Churu Lok Sabha seat in place of two-time MP Rahul Kaswan. After being denied the BJP ticket Kaswan crossed over to Congress and is now the party’s candidate from Churu.

In an attack on Congress, the PM said that the economic situation had deteriorated due to “Congress’s scams and loot”.

“Today the whole world is surprised as to how India is developing so fast. The world does not know that the soil of India is something different. Whatever we decide, we are able to achieve it. Due to the big scams and loot of Congress, the economy had collapsed and India’s reputation in the world was declining… Today the whole country is working towards the mission of ‘Viksit Bharat’. In this ‘Viksit Bharat’ mission, Rajasthan has a big role. When Rajasthan becomes developed, the whole nation will become developed,” the PM said.

In a veiled attack on Congress that released its manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, the PM said that his party- the BJP bring ‘Sankalp Patra’ unlike other parties.

“BJP definitely does what it says. Unlike other parties, BJP does not just release a manifesto, we come up with ‘Sankalp Patra’. Most of the resolutions we mentioned in 2019’s Sankalp Patra have been fulfilled,” PM Modi added.

Notably, the Congress party on Friday released its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with emphasis given on tackling the issue of unemployment and defending the constitutional values of India. The manifesto also promises to investigate several schemes, from demonetisation to electoral bonds, introduced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and bring to law those who made illegal gains through it. It was released by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with senior leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and P Chidambaram.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the manifesto will be remembered in history for its focus on the five pillars of justice- Justice for Youth, Justice for Women’, Justice for Farmers, Justice for Workers, and Justice for Shareholders. In what could be a historic move, Congress has promised it will reserve 50 per cent of Union government jobs for women from 2025.

Rajasthan will go to the polls in two phases, on April 19 and April 26. Polling for 12 Lok Sabha seats will be held in the first phase on April 19, while the remaining 13 seats will be polled in the second phase on April 26.

In the first phase, voting will be held in 12 constituencies — Ganganagar, Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, Jaipur Rural, Jaipur, Alwar, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur, Dausa and Nagaur.

In the second phase, voting will be held in 13 constituencies — Tonk-Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Pali, Jodhpur, Barmer, Jalore, Udaipur, Banswara, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand, Bhilwara, Kota and Jhalawar-Baran.

The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held in seven phases starting April 19. Nearly 97 crore voters are eligible to cast votes in the general election. Counting of the votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)
