Modi Reservation For Dalits Tribals

Till Modi Is Alive, No One Can Snatch Reservation For Dalits, Tribals: Modi

Tearing into the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal after the Calcutta High Court cancelled all OBC certificates issued in the state after 2010, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that no one can snatch the reservations for Dalits and tribals until he is alive.

While addressing a public gathering in Haryana’s Bhiwani, PM Modi said, “In West Bengal, they have issued OBC certificates to Muslims overnight and that too to infiltrators. The High Court has invalidated all the OBC certificates issued to Muslims in the last 10-12 years. See the mentality of the INDI Alliance, the Chief Minister of Bengal has said that she will not accept the decision of the High Court. Will give OBC reservations to Muslims.”

“Congress, TMC, and other parties of the INDI Alliance are supporting their vote bank. But today, I’m here to assure you that no one can snatch reservations for Dalits, or tribals till Modi is alive. Modi is the watchman for the rights of the deprived and this is not a political speech, it is Modi’s guarantee,” he added.

Hitting out at the leaders of the INDIA bloc, PM Modi said, “For Congress and the leaders of the INDI Alliance, their vote bank is more important than the country. These people divided the country for their vote bank. They created one India and two Muslim nations.”

The Calcutta HC on Wednesday cancelled all OBC certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010. The court has directed the West Bengal Backward Classes Commission to prepare a new list of OBCs in accordance with the 1993 Act.

Those who were on the OBC list before 2010 will remain. However, after 2010, OBC nominations have been cancelled. Approximately 5 lakh OBC certificates are set to be cancelled.

After 2010, those who have jobs under the OBC quota or are in the process of getting them cannot be excluded from the quota. There will be no impact on their job and they cannot be excluded from the quota.

After the Calcutta High Court cancelled OBC certificates issued in West Bengal after 2010, Mamata Banerjee said she would not accept the judgement and “OBC reservation continues and will always continue”.

Addressing a poll rally at Khardah under the Dumdum Lok Sabha constituency, she said, “I heard a judge passing an order, who has been very famous. The Prime Minister is saying that minorities will take away the Tapasheeli reservation, can this ever happen? Minorities can never touch the Tapasheeli or tribal reservation, but these mischievous people (BJP) get their work done through agencies, they have got the order through someone but I will not accept this opinion. Those who have given the order should keep it to themselves, we will not accept the opinion of BJP, OBC reservation continues and will always continue.” (ANI)

HD Deve Gowda Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna

HD Deve Gowda Warns Grandson To Submit To Legal Process In Obscene Video Case

JDS patron and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda has issued a stern warning to his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna to return to India from abroad and face the law in the obscene video case.

Prajwal Revanna is facing a probe by an SIT constituted by the Karnataka government over allegations of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation following a complaint by a woman who worked in his household.

In a letter posted on X, the former PM says he is not aware of where his grandson is but has warned him to return home and face the law.

“I have already said that he should be given the harshest punishment under the law if found guilty. I also cannot convince people that I was unaware of Prajwal’s activities. I cannot convince them that I have no desire to shield him. I cannot convince them that I am not aware of his movements and that I was not aware of his foreign trip. I believe in answering my conscience. I believe in God, and I know the almighty knows the truth,” the former PM wrote.

Deve Gowda also appealed to his grandson to return if he have any respect left for him.

At this juncture, I can only do one thing. I can issue a stern warning to Prajwal and ask him to return from wherever he is and surrender before the Police. He should subject himself to the legal process. This is not an appeal that I am making, it is a warning that I am issuing. If he does not heed this warning he will have to face my anger and the anger of all his family, If he has any respect left for me he has to return immediately,” he said

“I will ensure that there will be no interference in the enquiry against him from me or my family members,” the former PM added.

Earlier in the day, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to cancel the Diplomatic Passport of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna who is facing an SIT probe over the allegation of sexual harassment “along with prompt and concerted actions to secure his return to India.”

Siddaramaiah in his letter to the Prime Minister said that it is shameful that Prajwal Revanna fled the country on April 27, 2024, to Germany using his diplomatic passport shortly after news of his heinous actions emerged and just a few hours before the first FIR was filed against him.

“I write to you once again to draw attention to the grave series of incidents that Prajwal Revanna has been accused of committing. These incidents have not only shocked the conscience of the people of the State of Karnataka but have also caused a nationwide concern,” he said.

“It is shameful that Prajwal Revanna, a Member of Parliament from Hassan constituency, who is also contesting for re-election in the present general election, and who is the grandson of a former Prime Minister, fled the country on the 27th of April 2024 to Germany using his diplomatic passport bearing number 11135500 shortly after news of his heinous actions emerged and just a few hours before the first FIR was filed against him. He has abused his diplomatic privileges to flee the country and to escape criminal proceedings,” the Karnataka CM added.

Siddaramaiah expressed his concern that despite the issue of a Look Out Circular, a Blue Corner Notice, and two notices by the Investigating Officer, Prajwal Revanna has managed to remain in hiding to this day.

“The Government of Karnataka has taken prompt actions to meet the ends of justice by setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for investigation of the matter. The SIT is investigating the alleged crimes of Prajwal Revanna against women and is making efforts to secure the presence of the accused to face criminal charges,” he said.

“It is a matter of serious concern that the accused Prajwal Revanna has managed to remain in hiding to this day despite the issue of a Look Out Circular, a Blue Corner Notice, and two notices by the Investigating Officer under section 41A CrPC, The FIR against Prajwal Revanna contains charges like rape, sexual assault, disrobing women and forcibly video-graphing sexual acts to threaten the victims,” the Karnataka CM added.

He further urged PM Modi to consider this matter this utmost seriousness and take prompt and necessary actions.

“Therefore, I urge you to kindly consider this matter with utmost seriousness and take prompt and necessary actions to cancel the diplomatic passport of Prajwal Revanna, under Section 10(3)(h) of the Passport Act, 1967 or under any other relevant law and secure his return to the country in the interest of the public,” he said.

According to the sources, the Ministry of External Affairs of India has received a letter from the Karnataka government for the cancellation of the diplomatic passport in respect of MP Prajwal Revanna. The request is being processed. (ANI)

Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal

Swati Refuses To Give Up Rajya Sabha Seat

Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Thursday stated that even if someone wanted her Rajya Sabha seat she would have willingly given it and firmly asserted that “ab chaahe duniya ki koi bhi shakti lag jaye main resign nahi karungi” (even if any power puts pressure on me to resign I won’t do).

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Maliwal asserted that she is the youngest women Parliamentarian adding that she never showed any “desire” for any position.

“Agar meri Rajya Sabha ki seat unhe chahiye thi, woh pyaar se maangte toh main jaan de deti, MP toh bohot choti baat hain. (If they needed my Rajya Sabha seat, they would have asked for it, I would have given my life, it is such a small thing). If you see my whole career I never showed any desire for any position. In 2006, I left my engineering job and joined this when nobody used to know us. Only three people were there and I was one of them. I have been working since then. The way they have beaten me, ‘Ab chaahe duniya ki koi bhi shakti lag jaye main resign nahi karungi’ (I will not resign now). I have been told that this is the reason my character is being assassinated. I will not resign. I am the youngest women Parliamentarian right now and I will work very hard and will become an ideal,” Maliwal said.

When asked why you never realized that some of the members of the parties are becoming powerful, she said that everyone’s ego has increased.

“I have been with them since 2006. When we used to work at that time there was a very different environment. There was next level ‘Josh’ in each one of us. I lived in the slums for 7 years and we all used to work in this manner but when power comes, I think many things come with it and the biggest thing that comes is ego. Slowly and gradually when ego takes over your head, you probably cannot see what is true, what is false, what is right, what is wrong…I never thought that a girl would be beaten first and then she would be isolated with complete character assassination. I think everyone’s ego has increased a lot but I believe that everything begins from the top,” she said.

Earlier in January this year, Maliwal, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) member, was elected to Rajya Sabha unopposed.

Following the assault allegations levelled by Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal against a former aide of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said that the silence of the AAP chief on this matter shows his stance about the issue of the safety of women.

A case was filed against Bibhav Kumar and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case based on Maliwal’s complaint. Bibhav was arrested by the Delhi Police on Sunday, May 19, and is currently in police custody. (ANI)

Didi's West Bengal Unsafe For Women: Nadda

Mamata Was Taking Forward Appeasement Uconstitutionally: Nadda

Tearing into the ruling TMC in West Bengal after the Calcutta High Court cancelled all OBC certificates issued in the state after 2010, BJP President JP Nadda on Thursday said that the court’s judgement shows how CM Mamata Banerjee-led government was taking forward appeasement unconstitutionally.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised this issue during the election campaigns and that the leaders of the INDI alliance are shredding the constitution.

“Calcutta High Court has cancelled the OBC reservation given to the Muslims under the OBC quota subcategory. The Calcutta High Court has also cancelled OBC certificates issued In West Bengal to Muslims from 2010 to 2024. Both these judgements show how Mamata Banerjee’s government was taking forward appeasement unconstitutionally or can be said that the Muslim agenda was being taken forward,” the BJP President said.

“PM Modi had raised this issue during the election campaigns- how Mamata Banerjee, Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the INDI alliance are shredding the constitution,” he added.

Nadda further slammed CM Banerjee on her remark that she does not agree with the decision of the High Court and said that there is no one above the law.

“It is written clearly in the Constitution that reservation will not given based on religion. Mamata Banerjee said that she does not agree with the decision of the High Court. There is no one above the law. PM Modi quoted the constitution and said that the reservation is not given based on religion,” he said.

JP Nadda also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his silence on the Calcutta HC judgement and said that the people of the country will teach such people a lesson in this election.

“Rahul Gandhi roams around with a copy of the constitution but when the (Calcutta) High Court gives a decision on such an issue and Muslim appeasement is exposed then they remain silent. The people of the country will teach such people a lesson in this election. The people of West Bengal also will teach Mamata Banerjee a lesson,” the BJP President said.

Siddaramaiah Writes To PM To Cancel Revanna’s Diplomatic Passport

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to cancel the Diplomatic Passport of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna who is facing an SIT probe over the allegation of sexual harassment “along with prompt and concerted actions to secure his return to India.”

Buddha Purnima Ganga

Devotees Take Holy Dip In Ganga At ‘Har Ki Pauri’ On Buddha Purnima

Thousands of devotees gathered in Haridwar to take a holy dip and offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Buddha Purnima. The city witnessed a massive influx of worshippers at various Ganga ghats, including the Har ki Pauri.

In a post on X, Uttarakhand Police said, “Today, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima bathing festival, a huge crowd of devotees gathered at all the Ganga ghats including Haridwar Har ki Pauri. Our whole effort is to ensure that people bathe comfortably and in an orderly manner and then proceed to their destinations.”

Karan Singh Nagnyal, IG, Garhwal Range, reviewed the arrangements at Har ki Pauri ghat on Wednesday in anticipation of the large number of devotees expected to bathe on Buddha Purnima.

“From 1 am onwards we will start our work, people who are sleeping at the Ghats will be wakened up and procedures for the bath will begin. Security forces have been deployed to manage the crowd. Heavy vehicles won’t be allowed to come in during the daytime until the ‘Arti’ is over,” Nagnyal said.

Neeraj Pathak, a devotee from Chhattisgarh, expressed the significance of the occasion

“Buddha Purnima is a very significant occasion. That is why my entire family and I have come here to bathe in the Ganges and to have a glimpse of Lord Shankar. It is a very sacred sight. My only prayer to God is that Mother Ganga relieves everyone of their sufferings. We are very excited to bathe in the Ganges, and we hope to come here every year in the same way, and that all the people of India will pay their respects to Mother Ganga, bathe, wash away their sins, and come to alleviate their sufferings. There is a huge crowd, I think there are more than hundreds of thousands of people here,” Pathak said.

“There is no issue with the security arrangements; everyone is bathing happily, and no problems are visible. Our home is in Bihar, but we have come from Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh where we live,” he added.

Similarly, in Varanasi, devotees took a holy dip and offered prayers at the Ganga River.

Ravi Prabha Singh, one of the devotees, shared, “We have all come together to bathe at the Sangam. People come here from very far away. Lord Ram came here and this is where Sita Mata went into the forest. Bathing here provides a lot of benefits.”

Another devotee, Parvati, said, “Today we came to bathe in the Ganges. It was a very good day. Once a year, we get the benefit of this holy act. It brings happiness and peace to the family, so we have come to offer our respects at Mother Ganga’s holy site.”

In Prayagraj, devotees gathered at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, taking holy dips and offering prayers on this sacred day.

The Ayodhya Ram Mandir also saw a large number of worshippers on Buddha Purnima. The temple’s inauguration on January 22 marked a significant milestone in India’s cultural and religious heritage.

Buddha Purnima, celebrating the day of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation on Earth, is being observed with great fervour and devotion across the country today. (ANI)

Wave Against BJP In Haryana: Priyanka At Sirsa

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow in Sirsa on Thursday in support of the party’s candidate Kumari Selja.

The Congress leader was seated on a specially designed vehicle and was greeting the huge number of people gathered there.

Congress workers and supporters were seen walking along the roadshow with flags and posters of the party.

Speaking to ANI, Priyanka Gandhi said that the people are tired of the politics done by the BJP.

“There is a wave against the BJP in Haryana. People are tired of their (BJP) politics. There is too much unemployment, inflation is at its peak. Change will come,” she said.

On Wednesday, at another election rally the Congress general secretary accused the Prime Minister of silence on the issues of inflation and unemployment.

“When the Prime Minister comes in front of you, the words inflation and unemployment do not come out of his mouth. After running the government for ten years, he talks about Mangalsutra and buffalo theft. He neither tells what he has done, nor does he tell what he will do,” she said.

The Sirsa Lok Sabha constituency in Haryana is poised for a high-stakes electoral contest on May 25 during the Sixth Phase.

This constituency, encompassing nine legislative assembly segments: Narwana, Tohana, Fatehabad, Ratia, Kalanwali, Dabwali, Rania, Sirsa, and Ellenabad is witnessing a significant face-off between BJP’s Ashok Tanwar and Congress’ Kumari Selja.

Historically, Sirsa has been a Congress stronghold. However, the political landscape shifted in 2014 when the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) clinched the seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has never won here, is now fielding Ashok Tanwar, a recent convert from the Congress.

In the 2019 elections, BJP’s Sunita Duggal won decisively with 714,351 votes, defeating Ashok Tanwar of Congress by a margin of 309,918 votes. This marked a significant gain for BJP in a traditionally non-BJP constituency.

In Haryana, the Congress and the AAP will fight in alliance, with the Congress contesting nine Lok Sabha constituencies while one seat from Kurukshetra has been given to the AAP.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in the state, the BJP swept the state, capturing all 10 seats. In the 2014 elections, the BJP won 7 seats, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won 2 seats and the Congress secured only one seat. (ANI)

A Water Crisis Is Looming

‘A Water Crisis Is Looming But We Have Turned A Blind Eye To It’

Praveen Antal, a resident of high-rise housing society Saviour Greenisle in Ghaziabad, says it is our collective responsibility to restore the depleting groundwater table. His views:

As I wake up each morning in my high-rise apartment, nestled amidst the bustling cityscape, I can’t help but ponder over a looming crisis that seems to be inching closer with each passing day – the depletion of groundwater. What once was a distant concern has now become a stark reality, casting shadows over our daily lives and the sustainability of our community. Bengaluru saw it recently, other cities will witness it in not-so-distant future.

The tale of reduced water supply is not new to us apartment residents. With nearby canals failing to provide the much-needed water, we have turned to groundwater as our primary source. Initially, it seemed like a convenient solution, but little did we realize the consequences it would entail. As more and more high-rise structures sprung up around us, the demand for water surged, exacerbating the strain on our already depleting groundwater reservoirs.

The signs of distress are unmistakable. Water levels in our bore-wells are plummeting at an alarming rate, mirroring the depth of our worries. Once a reliable source of water, it has now become a testament to the unsustainable practices that pervade our modern lifestyles. As a resident, it’s disheartening to witness the gradual disappearance of something as vital as water, a resource we often take for granted until it starts slipping through our fingers.

The repercussions of this water crisis are far-reaching, extending beyond the confines of our apartment walls. Our surrounding ecosystem bears the brunt of our unchecked consumption, with parched landscapes and dwindling vegetation serving as poignant reminders of our collective negligence. The delicate balance of nature is being disrupted, and we, as residents, find ourselves grappling with the repercussions of our actions.

ALSO READ: ‘Bengaluru Water Crisis Is A Warning For Other Metros’

In the face of such adversity, it’s imperative that we, as a community, come together to address this pressing issue. We cannot afford to be mere spectators to our own downfall. Instead, we must take proactive steps to conserve water and alleviate the strain on our dwindling groundwater reserves.

One crucial aspect of tackling this crisis is the adoption of sustainable water management practices within our apartment complexes. From rainwater harvesting to recycling wastewater, there are numerous measures we can implement to reduce our water footprint and promote responsible usage. By embracing these practices, we not only mitigate the impact of our water consumption but also pave the way for a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Furthermore, we must advocate for stricter regulations and enforcement mechanisms to curb the indiscriminate exploitation of groundwater. It’s high time we hold ourselves accountable for our actions and work towards preserving this precious resource for future generations. After all, water is not just a commodity; it’s a fundamental right that should be safeguarded and cherished by all.

As I gaze out from my apartment window, I’m reminded of the interconnectedness of our actions and the profound impact they have on the world around us. The journey towards water conservation may be fraught with challenges, but it’s a journey we must embark on together if we are to secure a sustainable future for ourselves and the generations yet to come. In the end, it’s not just about preserving water; it’s about preserving life itself.

Food Inflation -- The Rice Factor

Food Inflation (II) – The Rice Factor

Farmers are a major constituency for the government and they remain in protest mode asking for a better deal from the state. In this situation it will not be in order to expect import duty to be lowered, till at least parliamentary elections are over and a new government is formed in June.

At the same time, the government being engaged in taming food inflation is unlikely to signal resumption of wheat exports, a ban on which was put in May 2022. Wheat exports in 2021-22 (April to March) exceeded the target of 7m tonnes by 850,000 tonnes. Soon thereafter came the ban.

Deficiencies in crop estimates – in the present case it is over wheat crop of the 2023-24 season, the harvesting of which has begun – make taking decisions about food related trade policies difficult, says Dhanuka. This, however, should not be the case any longer with monitoring of crops from sowing to their different stages of growth being possible using satellites and drones. For the same reason of data related confusion, India’s neighbour Bangladesh with a population of 174.25m was not sure for a long time whether the production of rice this season has been enough to take care of domestic demand.

The question remains if the country is harvesting a lot more rice than local requirements then why should the cereal price be on an upswing, especially during the Ramadan month when most Muslims observe strict fasting from dawn to sunset.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), an agriculture ministry outfit, has forecast a total of 41.2 million tonnes of rice is likely to be produced this year, including 20.9m tonnes of boro, 3m tonnes of aush and 17m tonnes of aman. Such a level of production should leave a surplus of 5m to 6m tonnes after meeting domestic demand of around 35m tonnes. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), however, says Bangladesh rice production of 36.3m tonnes will fall short of likely local consumption of 37.6m tonnes, leaving a deficit of 1.3m tonnes.

ALSO READ: Food Inflation – Grains of truth (I)

Without going into the merits of which of the two agencies, BRRI or USDA, has done a better job of estimating 2023-24 rice output, the worrying development is rising rice prices. What is to be said in favour of Dhaka is that it has been quick in reworking the import duty and asking private agencies to import the sanctioned volume of grain. Moreover, it has begun a dialogue with New Delhi for import of rice and wheat and also three other commodities, namely, onion, ginger and garlic that hopefully will soon lead to the signing of memorandum of understanding. Though there is a ban on export of rice and wheat, New Delhi has supplied rice, wheat and onion to countries in the neighbourhood and also to “key partners” such as the UAE, Indonesia and Vietnam on a case to case basis.

The unusual dry weather is making Bangladesh, which is the world’s third largest producer of rice after China and India, harvest a crop that will fall short of local demand. Imports, therefore, is unavoidable. Recent price inflation notwithstanding, the country highly vulnerable to flooding has moved from recurrent food shortages to self-sufficiency. The flooding risk is because of its location in the Bengal delta and its low-lying flat topography, which is further compounded by several factors linked to climate change. Rising frequency of extreme precipitation events more erratic rainfall has made Bangladesh’s pursuit of green revolution highly challenging.

The country’s agricultural research organisations have, however, been able to develop high-yielding varieties of rice that will grow in conditions of salinity, submergence and extreme temperature. Observers of Bangladeshi economy attribute breakthroughs to other factors like availability of locally produced quality seeds and nutrients and an efficient extension programme designed to arm farmers, almost entirely small owning less than 3 hectares with ideal farming practices. The country in the meantime has graduated from “green revolution to gene revolution.” Once again thanks to research successes in developing HYV seeds, Bangladesh is also producing over a million tonnes of wheat.

FAO says in a report that in spite of the 2023-24 season having suffered La Nina related weather setbacks, “improvements in the relative profitability of rice cultivation have stimulated expansions in main-crop plantings in Asia, Africa and Northern America should help offset the negative impacts of the weather disruptions.” Based on this premise, FAO has forecast world rice production to rise 0.8% from the 2022-23 reduced harvest to 523.9m tonnes in 2023-24 season on a milled basis.

However, price rises both in domestic and international prices that will keep in check use of the grain both for animal feed and human consumption is to arrest rice use at 522m tonnes. International trade in rice in 2024 is forecast to remain close to the 2023 reduced level at 52.8m tonnes. Till there is a new government in June, India will not consider lifting ban on rice exports. But according to FAO: “Apart from Brazil, Uruguay and Viet Nam, most exporters are expected to raise their shipments” compensating for squeeze in supplies from India. Global rice stocks will be up to a record high of 198.9m tonnes. Thailand, a major producer and exporter of rice, is, however, to see fall in milled production to 20m tonnes in the 2023-24 marketing year from 20.909m tonnes a year earlier.

In the family of rice consisting of quite a few varieties, the long slender-grain aromatic basmati is the niche one that is sold at a high premium over the normal grain. Basmati rice too comes in several varieties. Grown principally in India and Pakistan and sold in the world market by them, basmati has got geographical indication (GI) tag, speaking for its exclusivity and integrity.
