Shaksgam Is Part Of India: MEA On Chinese Activities Near Siachen

Highlighting Chinese activities near Siachen Glacier, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday reaffirmed that Shaksgam Valley is a part of India, adding that India has registered protests against China over illegal attempts to alter facts at the Shaksgam Valley.

Responding to China’s attempt to build a road in a part of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir close to the Siachen Glacier, the MEA spokesperson reiterated India’s stand on it.

“The Shaksgam Valley is a part of the territory of India,” Jaiswal said.

He further emphasised that India has never accepted the “China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement”.

“We have never accepted the so-called China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963 through which Pakistan unlawfully attempted to cede the area to China, and have consistently conveyed our rejection of the same. We have registered our protest with the Chinese side against illegal attempts to alter facts on the ground,” he added.

The spokesperson reiterated that India reserves the right to take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

“We have been protesting as and when required, we have always taken a very strong stand on it,” Jaiswal said.

China has invested in the construction of military infrastructure in the Shaksgam Valley, which could in the medium term, pose a military threat to Indian forces in Ladakh, reported Nepal-based online magazine Pardafas, last year.

In the last several years, China has kept up military pressure on India, through its incursions across the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

While this fact has been recognized by the international community, a study by Northwestern University shows that China’s incursions are strategically planned to make a permanent Chinese presence in these areas.

Border transgressions and incursions are well documented in all three sectors of the 3,488 km long border that India officially shares with China. However, far more sinister military aggression has been underway in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), Pardafas reported.

The reference here is to the construction of military infrastructure and roads by China in the Shaksgam Valley, a trans-Karakoram tract ceded by Pakistan under the terms of the 1963 Boundary Agreement.

Moreover, the China-Pakistan concert on the boundary in the Karakoram area of PoK (covering a distance of over 590 km) violates India’s traditional and legal rights in PoK.

China has gone a step ahead and developed military infrastructure and roads in the disputed region, presenting a clear and present danger to India, Pardafas reported. (ANI)

RJD Stands For ‘Rishwatkhor Jungle Raj Daldal’: Nadda

BJP National President JP Nadda launched a scathing critique of the Rashtriya Janata Dal on Thursday (RJD) labelling the party initials as ‘Rishwatkhor Jungle Raj Daldal.’

“What is this RJD? It’s filled with bribery, jungle raj, and swamps. R stands for rishwatkhori (bribery), J stands for jungle raj, and D stands for daldal (swamp). This is where they have ended up,” Nadda said while addressing a public rally in Bihar’s Araria today.

He expressed concern over the political alliance between RJD and the Congress, highlighting what he viewed as a shift from the party’s original ideals during the Jayaprakash Narayan movement.

Nadda drew from his personal experience in 1975, when he was 15 years old and took part in the movement initiated by Jayaprakash Narayan. He recounted witnessing the involvement of leaders like Lalu Prasad Yadav in the movement and expressed disappointment at the latter’s transformation.

“In 1975, I was 15 years old when I jumped into Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement at his call. I’ve witnessed those times and the involvement of people like Lalu Prasad. I saw the movement back then, and today, when I look at Lalu’s son Tejashwi and see how Lalu Ji is now teaching Rahul Gandhi how to prepare ‘muttton,’ it makes me wonder. I wonder what kind of alliance is this? The same Lalu Prasad Yadav who, during Jayaprakash’s movement, raised his voice against nepotism, favoritism, bribery, and corruption, has now, himself steeped in corruption, aligned with those Congress members against whom he fought during the Emergency. What kind of situation has this become?,” Nadda said.

Nadda further highlighted the BJP-led central government’s efforts to improve the welfare of India’s citizens, particularly through the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

“Through Ayushman Bharat, 10 crore, 74 lakh families, 55 crore people, and 40 per cent of India’s population, mostly the poor, are given medical insurance of Rs. 5 lakhs. Nobody was concerned about the transgender community. PM Modi has included them in the Ayushman Bharat scheme,” Nadda said.

Nadda also mentioned future plans by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend a similar insurance benefit to people over the age of 70.

“In the coming times, PM Modi is planning to give Rs. 5 lakhs insurance to people aged above 70,” Nadda said.

Polling in Bihar, which sends 40 members to the Lok Sabha, is being held across all seven phases–April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. Saran is set to poll in the fifth phase on May 20.

The counting of votes for all phases is scheduled for June 4.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP-led NDA nearly mopped up the poll sweepstakes in the state, winning 39 of the 40 seats. (ANI)

MEA Rejects USCIRF Report On Religious Freedom In India

India on Thursday rejected the report of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom that accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “reinforcing discriminatory nationalist policies” and said the organisation is completely ‘biased’ and it doesn’t even expect from the organization to understand country’s diverse, pluralistic and democratic ethos.

“The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is known as a biased organization with a political agenda. They continue to publish their propaganda on India masquerading as part of an annual report,” Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a press briefing on Thursday.

“We really have no expectation that USCIRF will even seek to understand India’s diverse, pluralistic and democratic ethos. Their efforts to interfere in the largest electoral exercise of the world will never succeed,” he added.

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom is a U.S. federal government commission created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and the leadership of both political parties in the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Earlier on Wednesday, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) which alleged that last year, Indian government failed to address communal violence disproportionately affecting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Jews, and Adivasis (indigenous peoples).

“In 2023, religious freedom conditions in India continued to deteriorate. The government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reinforced discriminatory nationalist policies, perpetuated hateful rhetoric, and failed to address communal violence disproportionately affecting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Jews, and Adivasis (indigenous peoples). Continued enforcement of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA), Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and anti-conversion and cow slaughter laws resulted in the arbitrary detention, monitoring, and targeting of religious minorities and those advocating on their behalf,” the report said.

“Both news media and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) reporting on religious minorities were subjected to strict monitoring under FCRA regulations. In February 2023, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs suspended the FCRA license of the Centre for Policy Research, an NGO dedicated to reporting on social issues and state capacity, including discrimination against religious and ethnic minorities. Similarly, authorities raided the offices and homes of NewsClick journalists, including Teesta Setalvad for her reporting on anti-Muslim violence during the 2002 Gujarat riots,” it added. (ANI)

45 Royal Families Extend Their Support To Modi In Gujarat

In a big boost to the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, as many as 45 royal families have extended their support to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The members of the royal families gathered in Rajkot. 15-16 royal family members were present, while the others extended their letter of support for PM Modi.

Thakor Saheb of Rajkot Mandhata, Sinhji Jadeja, said that the members have gathered to discuss about the nation’s interest.

“It is undoubtedly a clear picture that the Rajput community and the former rulers have closely been associated with PM Narendra Modi. All the rulers are here because of PM Narendra Modi’s vision. His tech-savvy approach to take all mediums to take India to next level of development,” Sinhji Jadeja told ANI.

His statement comes amid ongoing protests by Kshatriyas or Rajputs in Gujarat against Union Minister Parshottam Rupala’s controversial remarks against them.

On March 22, during an election campaign speech in Rajkot in Gujarat, Union Minister and Rajkot BJP candidate Parshottam Rupala triggered controversy when he praised the Dalits at the expense of the Kshatriyas or Rajputs.

Commenting on British rule, Rupala said, “Even kings and royals bowed down to the British, started family bonds with them, broke bread with them, and even married their daughters to them but this Rukhi Samaj (a Dalit community) did not budge. I salute them for their fortitude and strength. It is this strength that has kept Sanatana Dharma alive…Jai Bhim!” His reference to roti-beti vyavahar (breaking bread and entering into marital relations) caused anger that neither he nor the party anticipated in a State where the BJP enjoys near-complete dominance.

Speaking to ANI, Sinhji Jadeja said, “Today the ex-rulers of Saurashtra, Kachchh and Gujarat have gathered here to ponder over the nation’s interest at large, and how India in the international arena can keep its head held high.”

He appreciated the development in the country in the last 10 years and hailed PM Modi as a ‘global leader’.

“He is now a global leader, and it is without doubt that we give our fullest support to PM Modi,” he added.

Notably, Gujarat, the home state of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is a citadel of the BJP with the party winning all 26 seats in the last two general elections.

The state will vote for 25 out of 26 parliamentary seats in the Lok Sabha elections on May 7.

On the remaining constituency of Surat, BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected ‘unopposed’ after the nomination papers of the Congress party’s candidate Nilesh Kumbhani were rejected, as his three proposers claimed in an affidavit to the district election officer they had not signed his nomination form. US Accuses Russia Of using Chemical Weapon Against Ukraine

The United States has accused Russia of the use of the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops in the ongoing conflict, and has ordered the sanctioning of over 280 individuals and entities to impose additional costs on Russia for its foreign aggression.

“The Department of State is concurrently delivering to Congress a determination pursuant to the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 (CBW Act) regarding Russia’s use of the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian troops. Pursuant to the CBW Act, the Department is re-imposing restrictions on foreign military financing, U.S. Government lines of credit, and export licenses for defence articles and national security-sensitive items going to Russia,” the US State Department said in an official release.

Separately, the US said it is most likely the result of Russian forces trying to push Ukrainian forces out of their strongholds and obtain tactical advantages in combat.

“Russia’s ongoing disregard for its obligations to the CWC comes from the same playbook as its operations to poison Aleksey Navalny and Sergei and Yulia Skripal with Novichok nerve agents,” the State Department said.

The US is also putting sanctions on three entities of the Russian government that are associated with Moscow’s chemical and biological weapons programs and four Russian companies that have contributed to such entities.

“The United States is today sanctioning more than 280 individuals and entities to impose additional costs on Russia for both its foreign aggression and internal repression. In this action, the Department of State is imposing sanctions on more than 80 entities and individuals, including those engaged in: the development of Russia’s future energy, metals, and mining production and export capacity; sanctions evasion and circumvention; and furthering Russia’s ability to wage its war against Ukraine,” the State Department said.

In addition to these actions, the US is also sanctioning an additional three individuals in connection with the death of Aleksey Navalny.

“All targets are being designated pursuant to Executive Order (E.O.) 14024, as amended, which authorizes sanctions with respect to specified harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation,” the release read.

Slamming Russia, the statement said, “The United States will continue to use the tools at its disposal to disrupt support for Russia’s military-industrial base and curtail Russia’s use of the international financial system to further its war against Ukraine. We continue to stand in solidarity with Russians striving for a more democratic future and with Ukrainians defending their homeland from Russia’s aggression.” (ANI)

Omar Abdullah Article 370

Set Timeline For Restoration Of Statehood To J-K: Omar Abdullah

Amid the Centre’s claims that statehood will soon be restored to Jammu and Kashmir, former chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said Union Home Minister Amit Shah should set a ‘timeline’ for the same.

Coming down heavily on the BJP-led NDA at the Centre over its landmark decision to revoke special constitutional privileges to the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state under Article 370 of the Constitution and split the region into two Union Territories (UTs)–Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the National Conference (NC) leader said his party wanted statehood restored before the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Upholding the Centre’s revocation of Article 370 from the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, the Supreme Court, last year, directed the Election Commission (EC) to hold assembly polls in the state by September, this year.

Speaking to ANI on Thursday, the former Jammu and Kashmir CM said, “They (Centre) should not have taken it (Article 370) in the first place. We wanted statehood restored before the (Lok Sabha) elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah should set a timeline within which to ensure the return of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The Supreme Court has already set September 30 (2024) as the deadline for the restoration of statehood. With respect to the deadline set by the country’s highest court, he should state clearly in how many days statehood would be restored.”

In a historic piece of legislation in 2019, the Parliament passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, reconstituting the erstwhile state into the Union Territories (UTs) of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The reorganisation took effect on October 31, 2019.

With the historic passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 by the Parliament, Article 370 ceased to exist.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his last campaign-related visit to the UT, assured that the Centre was committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir while adding that the assembly elections would be held soon.

Meanwhile, the NC leader voiced confidence in his party winning the Lok Sabha elections in the UT by a ‘huge margin’.

Omar, who will file his nomination from the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency on Thursday, is pitted against PDP’s Fayaz Ahmad Mir and Sajad Lone of the People’s Conference.

The NC holds the seat currently, with Mohammed Akbar Lone as its sitting MP.

Jammu and Kashmir has five Lok Sabha seats–Udhampur, Jammu, Anantnag-Rajouri, Srinagar and Baramulla. Earlier, the region comprised six Lok Sabha seats, including Ladakh. However, following the abrogation of Article 370, Ladakh ceased to be a Lok Sabha constituency.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP won three seats while the National Conference won the remaining three.

Voting in Udhampur and Jammu was conducted in the first two phases of the general elections–on April 19 and 26. Polling for the remaining seats will be held on May 7 (Anantnag-Rajouri), May 13 (Srinagar) and Baramulla (May 20). (ANI)

INDIA Block

Modi Takes On INDI Alliance Over Maria Alam’s ‘Vote Jihad’ Appeal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a fresh attack against the opposition coalition, INDI alliance accusing them of “dangerous intentions” referring to an appeal for ‘vote jihad’ allegedly by Congress leader Salman Khurshid’s niece and Samajwadi Party leader Maria Alam Khan.

“A leader from the INDI alliance has exposed their strategy in front of the country. The INDI alliance has asked Muslims to go for Vote Jihad. This has come from an educated family, not from a child coming out of a Madrasa. INDI alliance is saying that all Muslims should get together and vote,” PM Modi said.

“The INDI alliance has insulted democracy and the Constitution. Any leader from Congress has yet to oppose this statement. They have given their tacit understanding. On one hand, the INDI alliance is trying to divide SC, ST, OBC and general categories, on the other hand, they are raising the slogan of Vote Jihad. This shows how dangerous their intentions are,” he added.

Salman Khurshid and Samajwadi Party leader Maria Alam Khan were booked for the latter’s alleged speech during a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Kayamganj on April 30.

As per the FIR, Maria Alam Khan allegedly asked the minority community to go for “vote jihad”.

Addressing a public rally in Gujarat’s Anand, the Prime Minister targeted the previous UPA government accusing it of giving “dossiers” to terrorists while alleging a partnership between Congress and Pakistan.

Calling it a “coincidence”, the Prime Minister claimed that the Congress party is weakening in India adding that Pakistan leaders are offering “dua” (prayers) for the party to return to power.

“The weak Congress government used to give dossiers to the masters of terror. But, Modi’s strong government kills terrorists on their ground. It is a coincidence, today Congress is getting weaker in India and when here Congress is dying and there Pakistan is crying. Now Pakistani leaders are offering dua for Congress. Pakistan is eager to make ‘shehzaade’ the Prime Minister and Congress is already Pakistan’s fan. his partnership between Pakistan and Congress has now been completely exposed,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister accused the Congress of lying while calling itself “Mohabbat ka dhukan” (shop of love) and alleged that the latter has become a “factory of fake goods”.

“People are asking why the Congress is so agitated. Today Congress has become a fake factory i.e. a factory of fake goods. Why is Congress selling lies by calling itself Mohabbat ka Dhukan?,” he said.

Refering to the UPA rule as ‘shaasankaal’ (reign) and the current NDA rule as ‘sevakaal’ (service period), PM Modi accused Congress of trying to divide the country.

“These days, the ‘shehzaade’ of Congress are dancing keeping the Constitution on their heads. But, Congress should answer me why the Constitution, which you are dancing with on your forehead today, was not implemented in all parts of India for 75 years. Today Modi is realising Sardar Saheb’s dream of uniting the country. Whereas Congress is busy dividing the country, Congress wants to create fights in society. Because of Congress, there were various kinds of tamperings with the Constitution of the country for decades,” he said.

“The country has seen the rule of Congress for 60 years. Now the country has also seen 10 years of service of BJP. That was the reign, this is the service period,” PM Modi added.

Voting for 25 out of 26 seats in Gujarat will take place in the third phase of the ongoing general elections on May 7.

Voting will not take place in Surat as Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Mukesh Dalal was declared elected unopposed last week after Congress’ Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination was rejected while other candidates withdrew from the contest. The results will be announced on June 4. (ANI)

Kargil – The Conflict Conundrum

Revisting Kargil – The Conflict Conundrum

In India-Pakistan relations, the past becomes the present and leaves unpleasant lessons for the future that remain largely unlearnt. Their disputes, no matter from whose side you look at them, remain unresolved, and the chasm has grown deeper.

May 3 will mark 25 years since the Kargil conflict began in 1999. Pakistan’s bid for scoring territorial gains failed, again. But not without turmoil and bloodshed on both sides, allowing those outside to influence and intervene.

Significantly, Kargil happened even as the two were engaged in peace moves, being nudged to talk by a world alarmed at their emergence as the two new nuclear powers. Not enough has been asked why the Good Samaritans also failed to anticipate the incoming events. For, Kargil happened within less than three months of the Lahore Declaration that the Prime Ministers, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif, signed on February 21, 1999.

Going by the adage that history repeats itself, it did in Kargil on two counts. As it had done in 1947 and 1965, Pakistan’s civil-military establishment first sent intruders. Two: it also caught India napping, yet again.

India discovered the intruders accidentally. Like a Muslim shepherd in the Kashmir Valley noticed Pakistanis in 1965, in 1999 Buddhist shepherd Tashi Namgyal looking for missing animals, saw Pakistani regulars in Pathan outfits, digging bunkers atop the Batalik mountain range. Both led to major conflicts.

The Indian Army took a while to discover that the militants were a façade for the Pakistan Army’s Northern Light Infantry (NLI), well-entrenched on the upper ridges, holding all the tactical aces. It was an uphill task, literally, for India. Facing stiff resistance, it deployed the Air Force and the Bofors gun. A victim of political controversy, it redeemed itself.

Young officers and men climbed 90-degree steep rock faces braving bullets and turning the story around. Mostly young soldiers in the 22-35 age group died on both sides. The official death toll on the Indian side was 527, while that on the Pakistani side was between 357 and 453. Pakistan dishonoured another 600 of its militant youths whose bodies it did not claim and collect. The Indian side had to perform the last rites.

BACKGROUND: In the Kargil region, the past practice on both sides was to leave high-altitude posts in the winter because of the extreme weather and reoccupy them with the advent of spring. In the winter of 1999, Pakistan reoccupied the forward positions and strategic heights of Kargil Drass and Batalik before the Indian forces could.

With the-then army chief, General Pervez Musharraf in the lead, the masterminds of Pakistan’s plan were Chief of General Staff, Lt Gen Aziz Khan, Commander 10 Corps Lt Gen Mahmud Ahmed and Force Commander Northern Areas Maj Gen Javed Hassan.

“Operation Koh Paima” was launched in mid-October 1998 when Musharraf had not informed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Even the air and naval chiefs were not taken into confidence. The timing and the extent of Musharraf’s briefing to Nawaz and the operation’s failure triggered a civil-military power struggle which led to Musharraf ousting Nawaz.

As per Pakistani writer Tariq Aqil, Nawaz, with limited knowledge of military affairs, could not fathom the Indian Army’s capacity to respond. “He was under the delusion that the intruders would be successful and capture Kargil, forcing India to accept the final settlement of Kashmir and he would go down in history as the conqueror of Kashmir.” However, Nasim Zehra, in her book From Kargil to the Coup, writes that the army gave Sharif the first detailed briefing on the operation only on May 17. By this time, soldiers had already occupied positions across the LoC.

ALSO READ: Pakistan Army Can’t Be Confined To Barracks

The Pakistani planners had assumed that 1) Pakistan’s nuclear capability would forestall any major Indian move across the international border; 2) The International community will intervene at an early stage, leaving Pakistan in possession of gains across the LOC; 3.) China would adopt a favourable position on its side and the Indian Army would not muster adequate forces with high-altitude training and acclimatization.

All these proved wrong. Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz got the cold shoulder in Beijing. Nobody accepted Pakistan’s version that the Kashmiri freedom fighters were fighting the Indian forces and that the Pakistani army was not involved. US President Bill Clinton virtually ordered Nawaz to ensure the withdrawal of all Pakistani soldiers from the Indian positions they had occupied.

Pakistan launched Kargil to seize a tactical advantage over India. Its success was supposed to cut off links between Kashmir Valley and Ladakh by blocking National Highway no 1 (NH1). The Pakistani planners wanted to force India to withdraw from the Siachen glacier and come to the negotiating table to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

As things stand today, India continues to occupy an advantageous position in Siachen that it captured in 1984. After the Kargil experience, as things stand today, neither side wants to withdraw from this world’s highest battlefield.

The year 1999 ended with an Indian passenger aircraft hijacked, to Lahore and later to Kandahar. India had to release four Kashmiri militants to secure the release of the aircraft, the crew and the passengers. Yet, India launched the peace summit in Agra without adequate preparations, initiating it and then reneging from it.

Twenty-five years on, there is little discussion on these failed moves by India at the turn of the century. In Pakistan, veteran journalist-analyst Najam Sethi has said that Pakistan has lost all its wars with India since it planned and initiated them, but could not achieve any of its objectives.

Although limited in scale and geographical spread, the Kargil War prompted a deep strategic analysis in both countries. India debated its national security gaps. The Vajpayee government constituted the Kargil Review Committee (KRC) under K. Subrahmanyam to review the events leading to the Pakistani aggression and recommend measures to safeguard national security against armed intrusions. The committee noted that the political, bureaucratic, military and intelligence establishments had developed a vested interest in the status quo. It emphasised the need for a comprehensive review of the national security system, considering the Kargil experience, the ongoing proxy war and the ‘nuclearised’ security environment.

Retired Lt. Gen. B S Hooda says the Group of Ministers (GoM) report, which followed the KRC, “was arguably the most comprehensive examination of national security issues undertaken in independent India.” Four task forces were established to evaluate the intelligence apparatus, internal security, border management and defence management, underscoring the seriousness of the post-war assessment.

The two reports led to many changes in the management of national security. The National Technical Research Organisation was formed in 2004 to handle centralised communication and electronic intelligence. The Defence Intelligence Agency was formed to cater to the military’s specific intelligence needs. A multi-agency centre was set up to foster better inter-agency information-sharing and coordination.

The defence establishment underwent some restructuring. This included the creation of an Integrated Defence Staff, the founding of the Strategic Forces and Andaman and Nicobar Commands, and the devolution of financial and administrative powers to the three services. The appointment of the Chief of Defence Staff, as recommended by the GoM, was made in 2020.

Today, India is economically and militarily strong but needs constant vigilance, internally and externally. In Pakistan’s case, the core issues that drove it into an unwinnable conflict remain largely unaddressed. The military still controls the reins in the country, the rhetoric over Kashmir continues, the economy is in dire straits and state support to terrorist organisations persists.

Jharkhand Congress deepfake Amit Shah

J’khand Congress’ X Handle Withheld Over Shah’s Deepfake Video Case

The official X account of Jharkhand Congress was withheld on Wednesday after a ‘deepfake morphed video’ of Union Home Minister Amit Shah was posted on the social media handle.

“X withheld the account of Jharkhand Congress in response to a legal demand,” said the social media authorities.

Earlier, the Delhi Police special cell issued notice to Jharkhand Congress President Rajesh Thakur under Section 91 of the CrPC, asking him to present at the cell’s office on May 2 in connection with the doctored video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah circulating on social media.

In a letter dated April 29, Inspector Naresh Malik Special Cell said, “This is to state that the above-mentioned case is being investigated by the undersigned. Delhi Police on Wednesday showed dissatisfaction over Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s reply in connection to Amit Shah’s fake video case.

Earlier in the day, a reply was filed by CM Telangana through his counsel. While speaking to ANI, Advocate Soumya Gupta said that she had received a notice under CrPC 91 in which it was asked from which source the video was.

According to Delhi Police sources, the investigation is not satisfied with the reply given by CM Telangana.

Meanwhile, Assam Police on Monday arrested Reetom Singh, the first person to be arrested in connection with the ‘doctored’ video case. It is alleged that the video clip was shared by several Congress leaders.

Earlier, the BJP’s Telangana unit filed a complaint against CM and the Congress’ state chief Revanth Reddy at the Cyber Crime police station, accusing the party of fabricating and morphing the speech of Amit Shah.

The complaint stated that the Telangana Congress Pradesh Congress Party, on its official X handle, posted a ‘morphed’ and ‘fabricated’ video of Amit Shah.

During his address at a public meeting in Congress-ruled Telangana, Shah said, “If the BJP forms the government here, we will withdraw the unconstitutional reservations to Muslims here. We will ensure that the SCs, STs and OBCs get quotas as guaranteed under the Constitution.” (ANI)
